City Council Gets Update On Solid Waste Division

The City of Sheridan operates the landfill east of town. They recently completed the construction of Cell 9, which is the newest addition to the landfill. The City will still have a second phase of that cell to construction and the total cost for that project will be over $5 Million when Phase 2 is done. Solid Waste Manager Charles Martineau says Sheridan will conduct a curbside recycling pilot program this year.

The City plans to fund the project with grant monies. The City is also working with Sheridan County to expand recycling efforts.

In 2006, the Wyoming State Legislature required municipal landfill operators to conduct an integrated solid waste study. The final report suggested that the future of solid waste in Sheridan County would be best served by expanding the current landfill in adjacent properties.

Future expansion of the landfill will require State Department of Environmental Quality approval of variances that are now required for land surrounding the existing facility.
