A proposal to change the name of North Park in Sheridan was brought before the City Council at their study session Monday night. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter has the details.

Sheridan resident Kim Love is proposing that the City rename North Park to Malcolm Wallop park, in honor of the late Wyoming Senator. In 1977, during his first term as U.S. Senator for Wyoming, Wallop sponsored an amendment to the Surface Mining Control Act that made the federal government compensate property owners whose ability to mine was undercut by regulation. Love explains why the “Wallop Amendment” was so important for property rights.

Love said that the ensuing litigation allowed Whitney Benefits to expand their investment portfolio significantly.

City Public Works Director Lane Thompson said that a resolution for the name change will be brought to the City Council for their consideration at their upcoming regularly scheduled meeting Monday night.
