City Brew Burglary Trial Begins In District Court

Wednesday morning began with jury selection and opening arguments in the trial of a man accused of burglarizing the City Brew Coffee store on North Main Street in Sheridan. 20-year-old Kyle Anton is charged with the City Brew burglary and attempted burglary of the Sheridan Baking Company in December 2008.

Prosecuting Attorney Diana Bennett began her case with testimony from an alleged accomplice in the burglaries. 19-year-old Cody Ellenson testified that he and Anton had committed the crimes together on the night in question. Ellenson has entered guilty pleas to the same charges and has been sentenced to between 2 and 4 years in prison for his part in the crimes.

Other witnesses on the first day of testimony included police officers who responded to the alarm and the kiosk manager for City Brew at the time.

Anton faces up to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine on each count. The prosecution will continue to call witnesses to testify on Thursday. Once the state has finished their presentation to the jury, the defense plans to present their case yet Thursday, as well.
