Young adults looking to obtain their GED and or for enrollment in the SCOPE program can now go to the same place. Following the retirement of Sheridan College's Adult Basic Education Director Robin West, her ABE position was absorbed by SCOPE Coordinator Sarah Riehn.

Riehn says that the SCOPE program will still be at the VA Medical Center, and SCOPE will still offer the same services.

She added that another change is that SCOPE and ABE will now have the same phone number: 674-6446 ext. 2703 at Sheridan College. Scope's number is no longer at the VA as Riehn will manage both positions from the college.

SCOPE is a 15-hour per day, 12-week long program. A local nonprofit started in 2002, Riehn says, when people in the area noticed a gap of kids who needed help other than just doing the ABE program to attain their GED. Supporters of SCOPE include The Department of Workforce Services and Sheridan College along with other community partners. Part of the program has SCOPE participants enter into the workforce through various community partners.

Riehn said SCOPE isn't simply for GED preparation, but teaches life training and employment preparation geared toward youth who may not have responded to a classroom-setting in the first place. Morning and afternoon sessions are available for SCOPE, and registration for the fall session ends Sept. 2. The fall session will begin Sept. 19.

ABE Changing to Managed Enrollment of GED program

Riehn added that something is also changing with the way ABE schedules people for the GED program. In the past, youth could just stop in and start studying, but now they will have to schedule a time to complete assessments and classes, and then after that the instructor will call them with a time of their test date.

The State of Wyoming requires anyone who wants to take the GED to complete intake forms and take assessments and classes prior to the actual test. Anyone with questions about any of these programs can call Riehn at the college at 674-6446 ext. 2703, or instructors can be reached by dialing ext. 2700. Riehn can be reached by email at
