Changes Proposed for West Tensleep Area

Changes Proposed for West Tensleep Area

The Bighorn National Forest/Powder River Ranger District is taking public comment on proposed changes to the West Tensleep Area of the forest located about 45 miles west of Buffalo.

Craig Cope, Project Coordinator with the US Forest Service office in Buffalo, explains why the area needs the changes.

Cope said the public comment phase is just the latest step in the information gathering process that is just getting started.

After the public comment phase, Cope said the comments will be compiled with data gathered from various experts and biologists performing studies in the area next summer. The USFS is hoping to make a decision on the proposed changes late this year or early in 2012.

Implementation of any plan, according to Cope, might begin as early as 2012, but a more likely scenario would be five years out, due to planning and then going after funding.

Proposed changes include the relocation of some campgrounds, decommissioning others and changes to the road leading into the area.

Cope said details on the proposal and how to comment are available online.
