Boxes of goods ranging from books and games to food and toiletries will be mailed Friday from the Dayton Post Office to Wyoming National Guard men and women who've been deployed across the Middle East.

The event is the brainchild of five Sheridan area women who are wives of veterans or currently deployed Guard members.

One of the five, Megan Paxiao explained how the idea came about.

She said more than 300 Wyoming National Guard members are deployed, which is the largest deployment since 2009.

Another of the five women, Samantha Hanson, said everything that will be shipped Friday has been donated, and she said the help of the community is appreciated.

Members of Sheridan's AARP also helped, dealing with tasks such as assembling the boxes for the items to be shipped. AARP member Clarence Montano said when the organization heard about the women's plans, the AARP wanted to be involved.

Montano said the AARP contacted the VFW and secured use of the VFW building on Broadway to put the packages together Thursday. He said members of the VFW Auxiliary also provided help.

He said the event was a collaborative effort by a number of people in the community.
