Schools in Buffalo will be welcoming students back next Wednesday, August 21st, and Buffalo Mayor Shane Schrader released a statement urging motorists to to be cautious around school buses.

In the release he wanted to give a friendly reminder that it is illegal to pass a school bus with red flashing lights.

“As the saying goes, 'our children are our future,'” he said.

The release went on to say that when motorists see a school bus, they should assume children will be around and leave lots of space between themselves and the bus.

When the bus turns on its yellow flashing lights, it os preparing to stop to load or unload children, and motorists should be prepared and cautious of their surroundings.

And, when a bus turns on its red flashing lights, motorists must stop in BOTH directions, give plenty of space.

If not sure what to do, Mayor Schrader suggested stopping to err on the side of safety.

He finished by saying “Let's make this year wonderful and safe.”
