Buffalo to Host NABO Festival This Weekend

The North American Basque Organization, or NABO, will hold their annual convention and festival in Buffalo this Thursday through Sunday.

The local Basque organization, the Big Horn Basque Club, is hosting the event while celebrating their 30th year in existence.

Ryan Fieldgrove, President of the Big Horn Basque Club, explains what the yearly convention is all about.

A different community will host the annual convention and festival, and cities and towns from all over North America vie for the honor of doing so. Fieldgrove said a community can expect to possibly host one once every 10 years or so. This is Buffalo's fourth time hosting the festival, and according to Fieldgrove, Buffalo is a favorite with the organization because it reminds the older generation of the home country, the ease at which visitors can move from different events in the community, and the fact that Buffalo is so welcoming to the Basque people.

Fieldgrove said the Big Horn Basque Club hosting the event during their 30th year celebration is a coincidence, but because of it, they feel a responsibility to honor those that founded the club and those that supported it since, and to those of Basque heritage everywhere.

Fieldgrove explains what the event means to Buffalo and the surrounding area.
