Buffalo Council OKs Fire Mitigation In Greenbelt

Johnson County District One Fire Chief Wes Johnson approached the Buffalo City Council at their meeting Tuesday to ask permission to perform fire mitigation and removal of non-native Russian Olive Trees from the Upper Clear Creek/Greenbelt areas within the city limits.

Johnson said grant funding for fire mitigation on Clear Creek has been ongoing since 2005 and funding is nearing its end. All funds remaining must be spent by June 1st of this year.

Johnson gave more details on the project to the council.

Johnson said there would be no financial or in-kind obligation for the city.
Work will be performed by inmate crews from the Wyoming Honor Farm or Honor Camp, which prompted Councilman Bill Hawley to ask if local law enforcement was aware of the situation.

Work will be performed during a two to three week period during May, according to Johnson.

The council approved the request.
