Buffalo #3 Top Western Town For 2019

Buffalo has been named #3 on the list of Top Western Towns as compiled by True West Magazine.

The notification of the award came in a news release from True West Magazine and was shared by the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce this week.

According to the release, “Buffalo embodies much of Wyoming history. Ranchers and rustlers and cattle wars. And so much of that heritage still lives in the buildings, the celebrations, and the attitudes of those who live there.”

That is only one reason Buffalo was selected as the #3 Top Western Town for 2019.
Other reasons named by the magazine include Buffalo being considered the birthplace of the Western novel because of Owen Wister's “Virginian,”
the historic Occidental Hotel, TA Ranch, Jim Gatchell Memorial Museum, and the Johnson County Courthouse which is on the National Register of Historic Places.

“When you speak about the history of the Old West, you have to include Buffalo,” True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell said in the release.
“So much of its heritage is still there, and its legend lives on in literature like The Virginian. The town celebrates its 140th anniversary in 2019 and it truly deserves the designation as a Top Western Town.”

True West Magazine’s 2019 Top Western Towns will be featured in the February 2019 issue, which hit newsstands on December 10th.

This is the 14th year True West has presented this annual award. Editors base their selection on criteria demonstrating how each town has preserved its history through old buildings, museums and other institutions, events, and promotions of historic resources.

True West magazine is in its 67th year of leading the way in presenting the true stories of Old West adventure, history, culture and preservation.
