Board Receives Offer on Highland Park School

Sheridan County School District 2 has received an offer from an individual who wants to buy the old Highland Park Elementary School on Avon Street.

In an open meeting following an executive session to discuss the offer, school trustees voted to proceed with a purchase contract. District 2 Superintendent Craig Dougherty (DOE-hur-tee) said the trustees will now work with the potential buyer to nail down specifics regarding the purchase, and hopefully will have the property under contract soon.

The Avon Street school was abandoned as an elementary school following construction of the new Highland Park School that's farther west. Most recently the old building has been the site of the district's two alternative schools, Fort Mackenzie High School and The Wright Place for middle school students.

But Fort Mackenzie has been renamed the John C. Schiffer Collaborative School and is leasing classroom space from Sheridan College, and The Wright Place has moved back to the Early Building on the Sheridan Junior High School campus.

School District 2 earlier this year received approval from the Wyoming school facilities commission to sell the old Highland Park property.
