Bighorn National Forest Plans Fall Prescribed Burns

Prescribed burns will be taking place this fall in the Bighorn National Forest and will include over 800 acres in the Medicine Wheel Ranger District, approximately 500 acres in the Powder River Ranger District and 500 acres in the Tongue Ranger District.

According to information from the Forest Service, the prescribed burn projects are designed to reduce hazardous fuels, improve wildlife habitat and range forage, and reduce conifer encroachment.

The burns will take place over the next few months only if favorable weather conditions allow. Slash piles will be burned once snowfall occurs. Smoke may be visible at times from surrounding communities. No road or trail closures are planned; however, short-term closures may be needed during active burning.
