The Big Horn Baseball Club is actively working to raise funds for two ball fields on the Big Horn school complex.

Jay Martinson, who's president of the club, updated the Sheridan County School District 1 Recreation District on plans in a meeting of the recreation district Tuesday night.

Martinson said the club would like to build both a baseball field and a football field on the 15-acre site.

He said the football field will be for kindergarten through fifth or sixth grade.

Martinson said the baseball field is the club's primary goal. Sheridan County School District 1 owns the land, but the club received permission from Sheridan County School District 1 trustees last month to develop the fields.

The club is seeking donations to pay for the fields, and Martinson said because of the federal government shutdown, the club can't apply for a 501(c)(3) designation at this time. But, he said, the baseball club has found an alternative.

Martinson told the recreation district board that the baseball club hopes to have a short, quick fundraising effort so that the baseball field could be constructed and in use by summer.

In other action at Tuesday's meeting, recreation district members approved funding several requests up to nearly $50,000.

The recreation district was organized around 2002 to administer funds collected through a one-mill levy on property in the school district. The funds are to be used for recreational activities.
