Next year, Sheridan's Ben Franklin Ace Hardware store will join a handful of other businesses that have been members of the Sheridan County Chamber of Commerce for 50 or more years.

That's according to Chamber CEO Dixie Johnson, who talked about the business on Coffeen Avenue during the Chamber's monthly Business Before Hours which Ben Franklin Ace Hardware hosted Wednesday.

She said the business on Coffeen Avenue is a wonderful place for people to come shopping for Christmas presents. Erica Scranton, who's manager of the Ben Franklin Ace Hardware, said the store carries a bit of everything.

According to newspaper files in the Sheridan Fulmer Public Library's Wyoming Room, the business opened at 316 N. Main Street in downtown Sheridan in April 1965 as a Coast-to-Coast store, and a large appliance store was opened later in the Helvey Building.

A 1968 newspaper article reported the business was expanded and enlarged in every department. In the following year, 1969, according to Johnson, the business joined the Chamber of Commerce.

The business became Coast-to-Coast Ben Franklin in 1983 and, in September of that year, opened on its current site on Coffeen Avenue. At that time, according to news reports, the store was divided into three sections – 6,500 square feet for Coast-to-Coast, 6,000 square feet to Ben Franklin, and 2,000 square feet for appliances.

Scranton said Knecht Home Center bought the business in 2004, and it became an Ace Hardware store.
