Airport Lighting Project On Hold Pending Funding

A project to rehabilitate lighting at the Sheridan County Airport is on hold pending receipt of federal money.

Airport Manager John Stopka in a meeting with commissioners Tuesday said the airport did not receive a requested federal grant in the first go-round of grants awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration.

He said funds for the Sheridan County project are available, but there is an uncertainty at this time as to when those funds will be officially approved.

Stopka said the good news is that he has received two grants that he requested from the state.

But, he said, he can't start any work until the federal grant funds are awarded.

In an earlier interview with Sheridan Media, Stopka said the project will involve rehabilitating all of the lighting systems for both runways and all of the taxiways at the airport. He told commissioners Tuesday that the non-federal portion of the grant will include converting all of the old airport lights to LED.

Also at Tuesday's meeting, Stopka said he has requested permission from the state to move the terminal building expansion project to the current fiscal year instead of fiscal 2020 as originally planned. He said he hasn't heard back from the state yet on that request.
