The technological trend across the nation has caused millions of people to drop their landline telephone service. It's not just cell phones that's causing the fast fade of old copper telephone line; Internet-based digital transmission is often piped into homes as a package deal along with internet and cable service. However, Ana Montes of the Utility Reform Network cautions that complete reliance on internet-based communication can leave society vulnerable.

Advocates of the telecom industry are keeping a close eye on digital phone service practices to ensure those who live out of internet range won't be victimized by deregulation.
