Fire Drill at Sagebrush

Sheridan Fire-Rescue conducted the May fire drill at Sagebrush school Thursday morning. Fire drills are conducted each month throughout the school year at each of the Sheridan’s Elementary, Junior High, and High Schools. Firefighter/EMTs from Sheridan fire rescue provide fire safety presentations for Kindergarten through 5th grade classes.

Almira Gafiatullina, Sadie Clarendon and Brekken Baker took the audience of the Shrine Auditorium back 70-years as they sang "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" made famous by the Andrews Sisters in the Abbott and Costello film Buck Privates in 1941. It was a roaring hit Wednesday evening during the Sheridan High School Jazz Band & Spectrum "Big Band Bash 2011" just as it was 70 years ago.

"Iron-stained" Sandhill Cranes

This pair of stained Sandhill Cranes were seen Wednesday morning near U-Cross.Their bodies appear rusty in color supposedly because they probe into mud containing iron which is then transfer from their bills to their plumage when they preen. For more see: http://www.savingcranes.org/sand...

Snickers Soccer Tournament Day 1

This last Saturday May 7th was the start of the Snickers Soccer Tournaments. The tournaments were held at the big horn equestrian center. The games started in the morning at 8:00 and went to 6:30pm at night. with over 20 fields there were a lot of games going on at once. There were 3 categories of soccer teams for both boys and girls starting with U10 then U12 and U14.

Last Chance

This last Friday May 6th, the Sheridan High School track team traveled to Gillette to compete. This was the last regular season track meet and the last chance athletes had to pre-qualify for state or make the cut to go to regionals the next week. The weather was great with it being warm and not very windy. Many athletes got personal bests at the meet and some did pre-qualify for the state meet.

Elephants = Circus in Town

The Sheridan County Fairgrounds was the place to be Monday afternoon as the circus came to town - the Shrine Circus to be exact. For two hours is was one act after another that thrilled the crowd. The elephants are always a hit and during the intermission many youngster went for an elephant ride, had their faces painted or just ate cotton candy.

3 Sheridan Teams finish on top at the Snickers Cup

After 114 teams played 200 plus games on 22 fields over the course of two days - three Sheridan teams garnered Championship status. Shown here is the U14 Sheridan girls team that beat the Rushmore girls team 4 - 1.

Hard Loss For JV Girls Soccer

This last Friday April 8th the JV girls soccer team competed against Laramie. The weather was cold with blowing wind and it was sprinkling rain, but that didn't stop the girls from playing hard. They kept Laramie back during the first half almost scoring multiple times. During the second half still tied at zero the Lady Broncs still pushed Laramie back almost scoring again. After 10 min.

After April Taxes comes May Taxes

The calendar on the wall says "May 9th" as Sandi gets ready to write a check payable to the Sheridan County Treasurer that she'll soon hand over to Julie in the County Treasurer's Office. You have until 5:00 pm May 10th to pay your second half property tax installment for 2010.

The Drainage Issue at the Fairgrounds Remains

It is decision time as Fairgrounds Manager Melissa Albrecht stands in the muddy arena Monday morning watching as a tractor turns over the "wet soil" wondering if the Shriners Circus will be a go in this location later today. A check at noon indicated that the Circus is a "go" at 4:30 and 7:30 pm even though more rain is in the forecast.

Time is running out if you haven't seen the Bodypaint: Old Tradition - New Visions by local photographer Harold 'Mike' Roberts that is on display through May 9th in the Martinsen Gallery on the Sheridan College Campus. Since their first collaboration in December of 2008 Mike has been photographing the bodypainting work of Dawn DeWitt of Dawn DeWitt Studios in Buffalo, WY.

Sheridan Fire-Rescue conducted roof ventilation training

Sheridan Fire-Rescue conducted roof ventilation training at the former Big Horn Motors building at 5th and Main Streets Tuesday. Firefighters have been conducting various training evolutions since last week, including interior victim searches, firefighter self-rescue, and wall breeches. The training was made possible by building owner Dave Sorensen.

Last Snow?

April's last morning bus trip to Woodland Park Elementary School was under wintery weather conditions of snow, blowing snow and reduced visibility. Area residents can expect snow showers changing to rain showers through the rest of Friday followed by more rain and snow showers through the weekend with the sun returning on Monday. A kiss from "Greetings!"

Friday evening on the SHS stage Aaron Odom, the Sheridan High School Drama Club sponsor, introduced the comedic duet play by Tom Dudzick titled "Greetings!" in which Randy, played by Sophomore Abby Bacon and Andy, played by Senior Rusty Burr are flying to Andy's home for Christmas to meet his parents and tell them of his engagement to Rusty. Mid-way en route is this inflight kiss.
