Report from SC Rodeo coach Marc Gilkerson:
This past weekend the Sheridan College Rodeo team traveled to Torrington, WY for our third college rodeo.
We had a good showing by many of our rodeo athletes, we are steadily improving and gaining confidence.
The men’s team was led again by Matt Schieck, Matt and his partner Kelsey Scott from Chadron, NE placed second in the first round of the team roping with a time of 6.8 seconds.
They roped their steer in the short round in 7.0 seconds placing second in the short round and second in the average.
Matt earned 150 team points which moved him into the 3rd position in the region in the team roping, so they need to keep roping solid and they will qualify for the CNFR in June. There were 70 teams in the team roping.
Jake Mangis another team roper placed third in the long round with a time of 7.0 seconds, but Jake and his partner weren’t able to rope their steer in the short round, but the placed sixth in the average, earning a total of 50 team points.
Tate Schwagler rode a tough Cervi bareback horse for 73 points placing fourth in the long round, and drew another tough bronc in the short round and scored 63 points to place fifth in the average, earning a total of 50 team points.
Tate rode very well and has steadily improved his riding. There were 16 contestants in the bareback riding.
Shane Stevens won the first round in the bareback riding with a 75 point ride, Shane scored 63 in the short round to place in fourth in the average. Shane was not on the team this week.
On the women’s team two freshmen pulled through and made it to the short round, and placed.
Mandy Newman roped her first calf in the breakaway in 3.0 seconds, which tied her with 3 other ladies to qualify for the short round. The fastest time in the long round was 2.4 seconds, so it was a very tough roping.
Mandy roped her short round calf in 3.2 seconds which tied her for fifth in the short round. There were 92 entries in the breakaway roping.
Shyann Lucas had a fast run in the barrel racing with a time of 17.79 seconds tying for the ninth and tenth position. Shyann drew first up on the ground in the short round and ran a time of 17.75 on a standard size pattern, which she said was the fastest her horse has ever run on a standard size pattern.
Shyann placed fifth in the short round an fifth in the average. There were 82 contestants in the barrel racing.
Jade Benson just missed the short round by 3/10ths of a second.
We get this week off, and then head to Casper on the 20th of April.
