The 2014 Hall of Fame inductees will be honored on Saturday, February 8th at the Golden Dome during the Men’s Basketball game (halftime) vs. Dawson College. Coach Smiley had this to say about the 2014 Class: “We’re really thrilled to be inducting the three individuals selected for the 2014 class.
Donta, Joann, and Vanessa all had tremendous careers while part of the Generals family, and helped to set the standard of success that our programs still enjoy to this day.”
Donta Richardson had arguably one of the best two-year careers in Generals Men’s Basketball history. During Donta’s two years (99-00 & 00-01), he led the Generals to at 56-9 combined record, including a tie for the school record with 30 wins during his freshman season. He averaged 22ppg as a freshman and 27 ppg as a sophomore (which led all of Region 9), and he had 9 games of 30+ points including games of 41, 45, and 51 vs. Cincinnati State (in which he hit 14-16 from 3point range).
Donta was All-Region 9 as both a Freshman and Sophomore, and was a 1st-Team NJCAA All-American at the conclusion of his sophomore season. After receiving his Associates Degree from SC, he continued his education & career at the University of Wyoming. At UW, he averaged 12ppg as a junior and was selected 3rd-Team All Mountain West, helping the Cowboys advance to the 2nd round of the NCAA Tournament. And as a senior, he averaged 18ppg while being named 1st-Team All MWC in leading the Cowboys to a quarterfinal appearance of the NIT.
Donta would continue his standout career for 8 more years playing professionally in Europe, where he won 3 titles and was named a European All-Star on 6 difference occasions. He also played for the Detroit Pistons on their summer team during 2003. Donta completed his degree in Social Science from the University of Wyoming in 2013 and is currently in his 1st season as an Assistant Coach at St. Martin’s University (WA).
JoAnn Doyle LaFountain
JoAnn Doyle LaFountain was a standout athlete on the women’s basketball team during the 99-00 & 00-01 seasons.
As a freshman, JoAnn was the team leader in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots and was rewarded with both All-Conference and All-Region 9 nominations. As a sophomore, JoAnn had a huge year, again leading the Lady Generals in scoring, rebounding, and blocked shots, led all of Region 9 in rebounding (9 RPG), 2nd in scoring (19.4 ppg), 3rd in Free Throw % (83%), and 6th in Region 9 in Field Goal % at 51.8%.
JoAnn was named the Wyoming Conference Player of the Year, was named All-Region 9, and was an NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American.
Vanessa Skurok Buyok
Vanessa Skurok Buyok had a decorated career during her time at Sheridan College, actually competing in 3 different NJCAA sports (Volleyball, Basketball, Tennis). In Tennis, in addition to being named to the All-Conference and All-Region 9 teams, Vanessa was a Region 9 Tournament champion, and competed in the NJCAA National Tournament in Midland, TX.
Vanessa was also a member of both the first Women’s Basketball & Volleyball (1975) teams, was the 1st volleyball player to be named to the Wyoming All-Conference and All-Region 9 squads, and she was a member of the first North Sub-Region 9 Women’s Basketball championship team.
