The season has come to a close for the SC Rodeo Team and we are very proud of this group of athletes. This weekend we traveled to Laramie for the last stop of the Central Rocky Mountain Region.
On the Men's side, SC had a great showing. Zeke Thurston battled phenomena all week long, but it didn't slow him down. He rode his Saddle Bronc in the long round for 78 points and 1st place. The regional race was tough and this ride moved him into the #1 spot by 10 points. Zeke capitalized in the short round and punched his ticket to the CNFR with a score of 74 points, placing him 2nd in the round and 1st in the average, but more importantly 1st in the Region!
Teammate Taygen Schuelke also had a great weekend. He was battling for the Reserve All-Around position to send him to the CNFR in 2 events. This wasn't easy, as there were two people hot on his heels all weekend trying to earn their spot as well.
Taygen got bucked off his bull in the long round, but knew he still had a job to do in order to secure his spot. He and Team Roping partner Lane Foster roped their steer in the long round for a time of 9.6 seconds qualifying them in the 7th spot in the short round. In the short round they roped their steer in 9.7 seconds, placing 2nd in the round and 2nd in the average.
Their efforts helped Taygen in the all around race. Taygen got by his Saddle Bronc in the long round for 60 points, and rode his horse in the short round for 76 points placing 1st in the round and 2nd in the average. After it was all said and done he earned the Reserve All-Around title and is going to take his top two events to the CNFR. He will be competing in the Bull Riding and Saddle Bronc Riding. The team effort in the Team Roping helped him get there.
Also doing well this weekend was Steer Wrestler, Logan Schaper. Logan qualified for the short round with a time of 10.6 seconds on a tough steer. He wasn't able to throw his steer in the short round.
Sheridan represented well in the Saddle Bronc Riding for the year as 5 generals placed top 10 in the Region. Zeke Thurston #1, Taygen Schuelke #4, Dillon Barkshire #6, Tayte Clark #7, and Kash Deal #9. These guys worked hard week in and week out.
On the women's side Cashlee Cunningham and Teddi Schwagler made the short round in the Goat Tying. Cashlee tied her goat in 8.3 seconds in the long round. She came back 8th in the short round. She knew she had to go for it and took and hard fall, but finished strong. She didn't place in the average but will definitely be a competitor next year.
Teddi had an awesome run winning the long round with a time of 7.6 seconds, but her goat got up in the short round, also taking her out of the average. Teddi worked hard all season and ended up 7th in the region!
Teammate Annie Novotny had a great weekend in the Barrel Racing. She had a time of 15.27 seconds in the long round placing her 2nd. She also had a nice run in the short round with a time of 15.30 seconds. Consistency paid off for Annie. She was 4th in the round and 5th in the average. Annie had a great season and ended up 8th in the region, which is very respectable in this event.
Jayne Lauweryssen didn't have the weekend she was hoping for but ended up 7th in the All-Around race against a very competitive group.
Both teams showed great improvement this year. Overall the Men placed 3rd in the Region with 3,650 team points. The Women placed 4th in the Region with 970 team points.
The season may be over, but they all have a bright future ahead of them. Come see us June 15-21 at the CNFR in Casper, WY. We will keep you posted on exact dates and times to watch Taygen and Zeke represent Sheridan College.
