Christensen Says Wyoming has More Playmakers

LARAMIE - Wyoming coach Dave Christensen is expecting more excitement from his team this season despite starting a true freshman quarterback.

Christensen says the Cowboys have more playmakers than they've had over the past two seasons.

Freshman Brett Smith, of Salem, Ore., will lead the offense after winning the starting quarterback job during training camp.

Smith is only the third true freshman since 1974 to start at quarterback for the Cowboys. He is one of nine true freshmen who are expected to see playing time on offense, defense and special teams.

Wyoming opens its season against Weber State on Saturday night. Kickoff at War Memorial Stadium is set for 7 p.m.

It will be the second time in three years the two teams have opened their seasons against each other. The last was in 2009 when Wyoming beat Weber State 29-22.
