The Arvada-Clearmont Junior High Boys basketball team kicked off their regular season this past weekend. The Cowboys have 13 players out for JHBB (every boy in 5th – 8th grade) 7 of which are 5th and 6th graders.
Playing 5th graders is unique to Clearmont because the school is so small they must pull 5th and 6th graders to fill JV and even Varsity spots in order to have enough boys to have a team. These boys played very tough against schools 4 and 5 times their size.
On Friday night it was the Cowboys vs. the Big Horn Rams. “The boys played an outstanding game and I’m so proud of them,” said Coach Harman.
“Dylan Collins, our point guard had a phenomenal game and led our scoring with 27 points. Mike Burtenshaw and Levi Bircher both played strong under the basket and put up 6 and 5 points, as well.
Zac Gibbs had one of the best defensive games I’ve seen him play.” “I was impressed how our 6th graders Clancy Kretschman and Cameron Weigle stepped up to play in an intense varsity game against players twice their size and with 2 years more experience.” Our final score was BH 45 – AC 38.
The Cowboys took on Midwest Saturday morning and Kaycee Saturday afternoon. “The boys had an outstanding game against Midwest and we ended up beating them 48 – 10. They played as a team and it really showed.
High scorer was Dylan Collins with 26 points, followed by Mike Burtenshaw with 10 points, Levi Bircher with 8 points, and Zac Gibbs with 4 points.
Kaycee was a tough match and the Cowboys fell to them 43-30. “It was a long weekend with 3 tough games over within a 20 hour period but we are going to work on a few things and we will be ready for them next time!” said Coach Harman.
“I have a great team this year. The boys are excited and have great attitudes and personalities, which makes coaching them a pleasure.”
The Cowboys will play Recluse at 4PM on Friday, 1/21 at Recluse
