05/30/08 Sports for Friday

The Sheridan Troopers will be busy this weekend. They play their home opening double header tonight at Thorne-Rider Stadium against the Miles City Mavericks. The first pitch will be tossed out at 5 o’clock. After starting 0-4 and being short handed in those games, head coach Kyle Warnke says they will be at full strength for all six games this weekend (cart)(40v. Warnke says their opponents have all played many games, and the Troops just need to get on the field to play more games to catch up (cart)(41v. Tomorrow, they play two games in Laurel, Montana and then come back home for a double header Sunday afternoon against the Billings Lobos at 1pm. The Troopers open their conference schedule next week on Wednesday, hosting a single nine inning game with Gillette. The Sheridan Jets will play in Wheatland tomorrow, and will travel next week to a three day tournament in Rapid City.
  
The Three on Three Hoop Jam Basketball Tournament opens tomorrow morning in downtown Sheridan and will run through Sunday afternoon. It should be a great weekend for some outdoor hoops.
  
The Sheridan College youth basketball camps are coming up in June. Joel Davidson will host his Generals camp for boys in the 1st- 9th grades June 9th-12th at the Hoffman Dome. The camp will run each day from 9am to noon. Frank McCarthy will host his Lady Generals basketball camp for girls for 1st-12th grades June 16th-19th , .also from 9am to noon each day. All campers receive a camp t-shirt and their own basketball to keep. To register, please contact either coach at Sheridan College at 674-6446. Davidson can be reached at extension 4000, and McCarthy at extension 4001.

Big Horn School girls basketball coach Mike Daley will have his Big Horn basketball camp for boys and girls June 2nd through the 5th at Big Horn High School. The girls’ session will run each day from 8am to noon, and the boys’ session will run each day from 1pm to 5 pm. Registration for the girls will be Tuesday morning from 7:30am to 8am, and boys’ registration will be from noon to 1 pm. All campers get a t-shirt and a pizza party at the end of the camp. Daley will have two former Sheridan County All-State players as clinicians for the clinic. Former Sheridan Lady Bronc Stephanie Stender, and former Tongue River All-Stater Courtney Johnson will help out during the camp.
  
The Colorado Rockies opened up a series at the Chicago Cubs last night by losing their 4th  straight and 7 out of their last 10. The Cubs took the opener 8-4. Our next broadcast will come to you live tomorrow morning: Rockies and Cubs at 10:30am on AM 14-10 KWYO.

Sheridan High School athletic director Don Julian has announced the hiring of Derek Bissitt from Holton, Kansas as the next head coach of the Sheridan Lady Bronc basketball team. Bissitt will take over after Mark Elliott resigned as head coach last month. Bissett comes to Sheridan with a dozen years of high school head coaching experience: Audio. And I asked the next Lady Bronc head coach why Sheridan and if he had any connections to the area: Audio. Bissitt says he’s excited to be taking over the Lady Bronc program: Audio. Lady Bronc fans won’t see much of a change in the style of play next season: Audio. Bissitt says he will be arriving in Sheridan shortly and is looking forward to working with the players this summer Audio.

The Three on Three Hoop Jam Basketball Tournament will be held in downtown Sheridan Saturday and Sunday. This is the eighth year of the tournament held by Wyoming Rehab. Wyoming Rehab uses the proceeds from the tournament to support the athletic training program for School Districts Number One and Two. Student athletes Amanda Monteristilli is the trainer for the schools, and tournament founder Mike McCafferty says the program has been well received by the schools, coaches and students: Audio. If you would like to get involved in the tournament as a volunteer, McCafferty says any extra help is welcome Audio.  Main Street will close in the Grinnell Plaza area starting Friday night with play beginning Saturday morning.

The Sheridan Troopers will play their first home games of the season tomorrow night. The Troopers will host a double header with Miles City, Montana. The first game will start tomorrow night at 5 o’clock.. They play two in Laurel, Montana Saturday, then back home for two Sunday against the Billings Lobos. That double header will start at 1 o’clock.

Trooper Baseball Camp is coming up next week. The camp is open to Webb Wright players. The camp will run next week Wednesday through Friday at Thorne Rider Stadium from 9am to noon each day. To register, please contact Sheridan American Legion Baseball general manager Dan Bilyue at 672-2376.

There will be an American Legion umpires meeting tonight at Thorne-Rider Stadium. Anyone interested in umpiring Sheridan Jets and Troopers games this season is invited to come out tonight. The schedule will be set for the coming season

The Sheridan Media Benefit Golf Tournament will be played next Friday afternoon at Kendrick Golf course. The tournament is a four person team scramble. You can register as teams or as single players. Please call us at 672-7421. Proceeds benefit the Sheridan Public Arts Committee to aid them in purchasing more permanent at work for downtown Sheridan.

The Kalif clowns will host their annual golf tournament at Kendrick Golf Course June 8th. The Kalif Tournament is a four person team scramble. To enter a team, call or stop by Kendrick Golf Course.

Former Sheridan College Lady Generals coach Misty Murphy has landed a new head coaching job at the University of Evansville in Indiana. Murphy coached the Lady Generals for two seasons prior to Frank McCarthy taking over the program. The Colorado native played her junior college basketball at Sheridan College before transferring to Colorado State. After leaving Sheridan College as the head coach, she went to division ii Colorado State Pueblo as the head coach for four seasons, then onto Colorado State and Northern Colorado as an assistant coach. Her last assistant job was four years at Rice University; she now takes over a Puple Aces program that went 21-10 last season and advanced to the second round of the WNIT. Murphy played at Sheridan College at the same time as former player and coach Ryan Williams. Williams also took on a new coaching job this spring in March. He was named the new women’s coach at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion after many years as the head coach at Kearney, Nebraska.

The annual Wyoming / Montana All-Star Basketball Series is coming up Friday and Saturday June 20th and 21st The first night of games on the 20th will be played in the Hoffman Dome at Sheridan College at 6pm and 8pm

The Colorado Rockies finished up their series at Philadelphia last night and got swept in the three game series, losing game three 6-1. They open the series tonight at Chicago. You can hear the Rockies and Cubs live tonight at 5:30 on AM 14-10 KWYO.

Basketballs will be flying all over the place in downtown Sheridan this weekend: the annual Three on Three Hoop Jam Basketball Tournament will be played this weekend in downtown Sheridan. Youth basketball teams from all over our region will be in Sheridan for the event Saturday and Sunday. Courts will be set up on Main Street in the Grinnell Plaza area, so Main Street will be closed in that area starting Friday night. Mike McCafferty, who now heads the hospital, started this tournament eight years ago and says the Hoop Jam has turned into a great Sheridan event: Audio. I asked McCafferty why the Hoop Jam has become so popular:Audio. And having the Hoop Jam on Main Street provides a great atmosphere: Audio. Main Street will be closed Friday evening for set up, with play beginning Saturday morning and running through Sunday afternoon.

Two Sheridan College Generals have signed on to continue their college basketball careers. Former General sophomore Tom Parks from Cheyenne has signed on to play basketball this fall at Youngstown State in Ohio. Parks’ teammate this past season, Kenny Daniels, has signed onto play at Cal. State Northridge, which is located just north of Los Angeles.

In other basketball notes, the annual Wyoming / Montana All-Star Basketball Series is coming up June 20th and 21st. The first night of games will be played at the Hoffman Dome Friday night, June 20th at 6pm and 8pm. Games three and four will be played in Billings. Two Sheridan Lady Broncs will play in the series. Laura Quist and Erica Stender will suit up for the Wyoming girls. Former Tongue River Eagles standout Rob Johnson will suit up for the Wyoming boys.. All four games will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO.

The Sheridan Troopers get their season into full swing this weekend. They host a double header with Miles City, Montana Friday night at 5 o’clock, then head to Laurel Montana for two games Saturday and come back to Sheridan for two with the Billings Lobos Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock.

The Troopers will have their Youth Trooper baseball camp next week The camp will run for three days next Wednesday through Friday at Thorne-Rider Stadium from 9am to noon each day. The camp is open to all. Webb Wright baseball players. It’s a great opportunity for the young players to get out on the big field and get great instruction from the Trooper players and coaches. To register for Trooper Camp, forms are available at the Rec District in Thorne-Rider Park. Or you can call Sheridan American Legion Baseball general manager at 673-2376.

Their will be an American Legion Umpires meeting tomorrow night at Thorne-Rider Park Anyone interested in umpiring Sheridan Jets and Troopers games this summer are asked to attend, as the season schedule will be set tomorrow. The meeting will be at 5:30pm.

The Sheridan Troopers will host a double header with Douglas Monday afternoon. The first game will start at 1 o’clock.

Construction continues at Homer Scott Stadium. The rain has slowed down work at the stadium this week. Last week, the old press box was removed and work on the new one has started. Work on the new artificial turf field will begin once school is out for the summer. The school board also announced the naming of the company that will put in the new track at the junior high.

Weather permitting, tomorrow there will be a Senior Olympic Track and Field Clinic at the Sheridan Junior High Track. The clinic is free and will start at 8am. Anyone wanting to learn more about field events for this summer’s Senior Olympic Games are encouraged to come out for this free clinic. There is no pre-registration; just be at the Junior High track tomorrow morning at 8 o’clock.

The Sheridan Media Benefit Golf Tournament is two weeks away. The tournament will be played Friday afternoon, June 6th at Kendrick Golf Course. It’s a four person team scramble. You can enter teams or enter as a single. All singles will be put on teams according to handicaps. Proceeds from the benefit golf tournament support the efforts of the Sheridan Public Arts Committee to help acquire more permanent art work for downtown Sheridan. 05/21/08 Sports for Thursday

The Sheridan Troopers are 0-4 to start the season.. They will have the next several days off from competition, but with all the rain we’re expecting, that’s not a bad thing. The Troops will play their first home game a week from tomorrow.

The Sheridan Jets are 2-3 overall. They are off until the first week in June, when they play at a tournament in Rapid City.

The Sheridan Recreation District opens up summer adult softball league play next week. Co-Rec teams open the week Tuesday and Wednesday, with the first night of men’s league play on Thursday.

The Sheridan State Senior Olympic Committee will host a free skills and training clinic weather permitting Saturday at the Sheridan Junior High track. The clinic is scheduled to start at 8am, and is open to anyone 50 and older. The clinic will introduce field events including the long jump, high jump, shot put, discus, javelin and pole vault. No registration is needed. Just come out at 8 o’clock Saturday. Here’s the State Olympic Coordinator Audio.  The State Games will be July 24th-26th, and Eggenberger says the thing Sheridan County citizens can do to help them out is to become a volunteer for the games Audio.

Sheridan Senior Health and Wellness week starts next Wednesday. It will run for three days. They have dozens of activities and events, and it’s free with the exception of golf and bowling Audio. Again, free registration will take place at the Senior Center next Wednesday morning from 9am to 10:30am. Free lunch will be served each day.

Youth Track Meet Photos

The Sheridan Hersey Track Meet was held yesterday. Over 100 kids participated in the meet, which is held by the Sheridan Recreation District. The best thing was a great day of weather. The kids participated in field events, including a softball throw and standing broad jump, plus several running events including relays. The Rec District’s Dale Boedecker says the Hersey Track program is great for kids: Audio. Boedecker says qualifiers from yesterday’s meet get to compete in the State Meet next month: Audio.  Competitors at the State Meet have a chance to qualify for the National Hersery Track Meet: Audio.

Senior Health and Wellness Days begin next Wednesday at 9am with registration at the Senior Center. The event runs Wednesday through Friday, with dozens of free activities to participate in, including indoor and outdoor activities from Billiards to swimming. Free lunch will be served each day.. The event is being put on in cooperation with the Senior Center, the YMCA, and the Sheridan Recreation District. For more information and a schedule of events and activities, stop by the Senior Center. All activities are free, with the exception of golf and bowling.

In a related note, registration is open for July’s State Senior Olympic Games. Registration is $5 per event. entered. Registration forms can be found at the Sheridan Senior Center, the YMCA, the old Highland Park School, or on-line at www.wyseniorolympics.com ..The State Senior Games will be held in Sheridan July 24th-26th.

The Senior Olympic committee is hosting a free Senior Track and Field Clinic Saturday morning at the Sheridan Junior High School track. It’s free for all 50 and over. Sheridan High School track coach Eric Frey will conduct the clinic. It’s a perfect way to get training started for this summer Senior Games. Courts will be set up on Main Street for the event. Hundreds of basketball players from all over the region will be in town to compete. The tournament is put on by Wyoming Rehab. Proceeds benefit the athletic training program at School Districts 1 & 2.

Three Sheridan Lady Bronc soccer players have earn all-state honors and one also was named the state’s top senior player, Honored were seniors Laura Quist, Rachel Ryan and Chelsey George, Ryan was also named the Senior Player of the Year. Lady Bronc head coach Chris Cook says it’s a great honor for those players Audio. All the 4-A coaches vote for the All-State and Player of the Year awards, and Cook says it shows the respect the other 4-A coaches have for these three Lady Broncs: Audio. Rachel Ryan is known state wide for her play not only on the soccer field, but also on the basketball court. Cook says she is a special kind of player: Audio.

The Wyoming State Senior Olympic Games will run in Sheridan the last weekend of July. This Saturday, event organizers will he holding a free track and field clinic for those interested in competing in the games. All people 50 and older can participate. Eric Frey, who is a track coach at Sheridan High School, will run the clinic. It will take place Saturday morning, starting at 8 o’clock at the Sheridan Junior High track. Again, this clinic is free.

The Sheridan Hersery Track Meet takes place this evening at the NSI track. This meet is for all Sheridan County boys and girls ages 9-14. The first events get underway at 4:30pm.

In Sheridan College basketball notes: Generals’ head coach Joel Davidson has signed his first two recruits of the 2008 class. Joining the Generals this fall will be teammates Steve Ivory Jr. and Tearance Edwards from Milwaukee North High School. Ivory Jr. Is a 6’5” swingman. He averaged 16 points, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists in his senior season. He was also an All-City tight end for four seasons with his high school football team. Davidson says Ivory can play several positions ,and is one of the best passers he’s ever recruited. Edwards is a 6’4” swingman. He averaged 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists this past season. Davidson says Edwards will be an instant fan favorite, with his high flying athletic ability. He led his league last season with over 40 dunks. Davidson says he went after these players because both can come in and play right away, and Davidson says it’s a great start to his class of recruits for this coming season. Ivory and Edwards will join a Generals team that returns five players from last year’s team. Four of those players were starters during this past season.

The Colorado Rockies were in action at Coors Field last night. They’ve now won three of their last four games after beating San Francisco 4-3. Game two of the series can be heard live tonight on AM 14-10 KWYO Broadcast time is set for 6 o’clock.

Five Sheridan County athletes took individual state championships at the State Track and Field Championships, which concluded Saturday evening in Casper. Big Horn’s Clancy Phillips dominated the Class 2-A sprint finals Saturday, winning both the 100 and 200 meters and is the county’s only double winner at the State Meet. Tongue River’s Ryan Dunn has been solid all spring in the hurdle events. Saturday, he won the 2-A 110 meter hurdles and was 5th in the 300 meter hurdles. For the Sheridan Lady Broncs, Kayla Fauber had her best meet of the season, saving her best for last in winning the 4-A girls pole vault. Fauber was the only vaulter to clear 10 feet in the finals. Boomer McLaughlin was the only Sheridan Bronc State Champion. Boomer took the Boys 4-A high jump, clearing 6’6 to win the title; and Tongue River Lady Eagle Hunter Vineyard took the girls 2-A high jump, clearing 5’2.
  
In the team scores, the best performance was from the Tongue River Lady Eagles and Big Horn Rams. Both teams finished 4th overall. The Tongue River Eagles were 12th, and the Big Horn girls were 10th. In class 1-A, the NSI boys were 13th. The NSI girls were 15th. The Arvada/Clearmont girls finished 13th, and the A/C boys did not score any points. In the class 4-A team race, the Sheridan Broncs finished 7th and the Lady Broncs were 8th.

The State High School Soccer Tournament ended Saturday evening in Laramie, with both Laramie teams wining the class 4-A state titles.
  
In local baseball action, the Sheridan Troopers opened their season over the weekend and the Jets played their home opener yesterday. The Troopers dropped two games in Gillette Saturday by scores of 15-5 and 13-0. Yesterday, they were in Billings and dropped both ends of a double header against the Billings Lobos by scores of 7-6 and 16-12. The Troops are now off until Friday, May 30th when they host a double header with Miles City, Montana.

The Sheridan Jets are 2-3 overall after splitting a double header yesterday with the Billings Regulators. Head coach Ryan Murner Audio. They fell behind in the first game, but came back in their final at bat to win 10-9 Audio. In the second game, they fell behind early and never recovered as the Regulators hit the ball hard, losing 18-0. Murner says it just went south early Audio. The Jets are now off until they head to a tournament in Rapid City the first week in June.

In major league baseball, the Colorado Rockies took two out of three from the Minnesota Twins in the first round of inter-league play at Coors Field. The Rockies are 11 games back in the National League West, and open a home series tonight with the San Francisco Giants. Here’s a Sheridan County recap of first day of action at the State Track and Field Championships. Two Sheridan County athletes won state titles yesterday. Sheridan High School’s Boomer McLaughlin won the 4-A high jump with a leap of 6 ‘6”, and Tongue River Lady Eagle’s Hunter Vineyard took the championship in the girls’ 2-A high jump. In other action yesterday for Sheridan High School, the Lady Broncs picked up points from Lela Carpenter and Dana Morin. They finished 3rd and 5th respectively in the 3200 meters, and the Lady Broncs were 3rd in the 3200 meter relay. The Tongue River Lady Eagles’ Kelsie Dellos was 5th in the 3200 meters, Kristen Nielson was 4th in the discus, Fallon Lewis qualified in the 100 meter hurdles, and the TR girls were 3rd in the 3200 meter relay. For the Big Horn Lady Rams, Kaylie Vendela and Winsome Williams made it a Sheridan County sweep in the 2-A girl’s high jump finishing 2nd and 3rd behind TR’s Hunter Vineyard. Elizabeth Mendoza was 5th in the discus. In the 1-A girls’ competition yesterday, Melissa Torres scored points for NSI with a 7th place finish in the long jump, and Arvada/Clearmont’s Shem Lovato qualified for the 100 meter hurdles final.
  
For the Sheridan Broncs yesterday, along with Boomer McLaughlin winning the 4-A high jump, Tatlor Beard qualified for the 200 meter finals and Danny Rojo qualified for the 110 meter hurdle final. The Tongue River Eagles picked up solid team points in the 3200 meter final with Cole Jolovich and Brock Hovey placing 6th and 7th. The Eagles’ 3200 meter relay team finished 6th, and Ryan Dunn qualified for the 110 meter hurdle final with the fastest prelim time. For Big Horn, Clancy Phillips and Taylor Graves both qualified for the 200 meter finals and Ian Scofield earned points with an 8th place finish in the long jump.

This weekend is busy for Sheridan American Legion Baseball. The Sheridan Jets play at home Sunday, and the Troopers will open their season in Gillette tomorrow. Troopers’ head coach Kyle Warnke says the spring weather hasn’t really affected their preparation for the start of the season: Audio.  And opening in Gillette and Billings is a good start, as the players seem ready to finally get the season underway Audio. It will also be good for the coaches to get a chance to see the players in real game situations: Audio. The Troops open at home on the 30th against Miles City, Montana.

The Colorado Rockies are back at home tonight, and will open up inter-league play with the Minnesota Twins. It will be the Twins’ first ever visit to Coors Field. You can hear tonight’s game live on AM 14-10 KWYO. Broadcast time is 6:30pm.

The State Track and Field Championships open at 11 o’clock this morning, and will run over the next three days. Monday, Sheridan High School head coach Art Bauers issued a challenge to all the athletes: Audio. The Broncs head into the State Meet as well rounded a group as Bauers has had in many years. He talks about this week’s expectations of the Broncs Audio. Like the Broncs, the Lady Bronc team is a young group, and Bauers says the outlook is good for Sheridan High School track and field: Audio.
  
In other local sports notes, both Sheridan American Legion Baseball teams play this weekend. The Troopers play at Gillette Saturday afternoon, and then in Billings Sunday. The Jets will play two at home Sunday starting at 11am against Gillette. The Troopers play their home opener May 30th against Miles City, Montana.

The Sheridan Senior Olympics Track and Field Clinic will be held next Saturday at the Sheridan Junior High track. The free clinic is for anyone age 50 and over. Sheridan High School track coach Eric Frey will hold the clinic for those interested in getting ready for the State Senior Olympics, set to run in Sheridan July 24th-26th. Again, this clinic is free and will be held next Saturday at the Sheridan Junior High track starting at 8am.

The Colorado Rockies played game two of their three game series in Phoenix last night, and lost 4-3. Game three is tonight at 7pm and can be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO.

In local high school golf action, the 4-A East Regional Golf Tournament finished up yesterday at the Powder Horn, and both Sheridan High School teams played well. The Broncs had the team lead after day one ,but Cheyenne Central was able to catch the Broncs and take the team title with the Broncs solidly in 2nd place. Sheridan High School golf coach Larry Martoglio says the Broncs played great golf and put themselves into position to win the conference championship: Audio. And overall it was a great finish to the spring season: Audio. The Lady Broncs are an inexperienced bunch, but Martoglio says the Lady Broncs also had a good finish to the spring season: Audio.
  
The Wyoming State Track and Field Championships open tomorrow morning in Casper. The first events get underway at 11 o’clock. All or our Sheridan County schools will have athletes competing. In all, sixty-four athletes from Sheridan County will participate.

The Sheridan Hersey Track Meet will be held next Tuesday at the Normative Services Track. Hersey Track is open to all boys and girls ages 9-14. Registration forms can be found in local schools. The meet will start Tuesday at 4:30pm. For more information, call the Sheridan Rec District at 674-6421.

Senior Health and Wellness Days starts Wednesday, May 28th and will run for three days. The event is being sponsored by the Sheridan Senior Center, the YMCA, and the Sheridan Recreation District. Activities will take play at the YMCA, the old Highland Park School, and the Senior Center. All activities are free, except a fee will be charged for the bowling activity. Lunch will be provided each day. Registration and the kickoff of the event will be at 9 o’clock at the Senior Center on May 28th.

Here’s a Wyoming State Senior Olympics registration reminder: registration for the games is being taken now at the Sheridan Senior Center. Competitors can also register on-line at the State Senior Games website at www.wyseniorolympics.com . The games will be held in Sheridan July 24th, 25th, and 26th.

Next Saturday, Senior Olympic organizers have scheduled a free track and field clinic for all Sheridan County seniors next Saturday. Anyone 50 and older who is interested in participating in the State Senior Olympics in July are invited to come out for this clinic. Sheridan High School track coach Eric Frey will conduct the clinic; it will be held at the Sheridan junior track Saturday, May 24th at 8am. This clinic is free and meant to be fun and informative. In local baseball action the Sheridan Jets will play a home double header Sunday against Gillette. The first game is scheduled for 11am.The Troopers open their season with a game at Gillette Saturday afternoon.

 

05/13/08 Sports for Tuesday

A total of sixty-five Sheridan County High School track athletes will compete in the State Track Meet this week. Twenty-eight Broncs and Lady Broncs will represent Sheridan High School in multiple events in Casper.. Along with Sheridan High School, sixteen athletes will compete for Tongue River High School. Big Horn will have eleven, and in class 1-A Arvada/Clearmont and Normative Services will have five each representing their schools. Action gets underway Thursday morning at Kelly Walsh High School. The meet continues through Saturday evening. Sheridan High School head coach Art Bauers says they really work on the mental game as they get ready to compete at the State Championships: Audio. And since they only have one shot at the State Meet, mental focus is the most important thing to have: Audio. And Bauers says with three practices before the competition begins, not much more can be done to get ready: Audio. The meet opens Thursday morning at 11 o’clock, with the finals in the 3200 meters.

 The Class 4-A High School Regional Golf Tournament got off to a cold, wet start at the Powder Horn yesterday. The second and final round will get underway at 10 o’clock this morning.

In State AAU volleyball action, the Tongue River U12 volleyball team was crowned State Champions this past Saturday at the State AAU Volleyball Tournament. Team members are Kendall Bilodeau, Ryver Dearcorn, Rylee Logan, Sarah Bacon, Destiny Parks, Julie Weddle and Mattie Althoff. The team is coached by Amanda Porter.

The Sheridan Troopers will play their season opener at Gillette Saturday afternoon, and then play two in Billings against the Billings Lobos Sunday. The Sheridan Jets will play at home this Sunday against Gillette. The double header is set to get underway at 11am.

In local golf tournament notes, the Sheridan College Booster Club is hosting their annual spring fundraising tournament Friday at the Powder Horn. And Friday, June 6th Sheridan Media hosts our own benefit golf tournament at Kendrick Gold Course. All proceeds benefit the Sheridan Public Arts Committee. The tournament is a four person team scramble. You can enter your own teams or register as a single; those players will be put on teams. The 2008 Sheridan Hersey Youth Track Meet will run a week from today. Hersey Track is a national youth track and field program, and is open to all 9-14 year old boys and girls. The meet will be held next Tuesday at the NSI track, located west of Sheridan on Big Goose. Events will get underway at 4:30pm. Registration forms can be found in local schools and at the Sheridan Recreation District office in Thorne-Rider Park.

 

05/12/08 Sports for Monday

It’s onto the State Tournament for Sheridan County track athletes at the regional. The Tongue River Lady Eagles were the only Sheridan County team to capture a regional championship.  They did so by outscoring Lingle for the title with 60 points; Lingle had 52. The Big Horn Lady Rams took the title last spring. They settled for a 6th place finish in the 1-A girls’ team race. The NSI girls finished 5th, and Arvada/Clearmont was 6th. In the 4-A girls regional, the Sheridan Lady Broncs placed 5th. In the boys’ team races, in Class 1-A NSI was 6th, with Arvada/Clearmont 10th. In the 2-A boys, Tongue River finished 7th with Big Horn 8th, and the Sheridan Broncs ended up 4th in the 4-A regional. Now it’s onto the State Championships; the All-Class State Meet opens Thursday in Casper.
  
The Sheridan High School soccer teams’ seasons closed out this past Thursday at the regional touraments. Both teams were eliminated from the playoffs in the first round.

 The Tongue River and Big Horn golfers will try again today, weather permitting, to end their spring season. The regional tournament was washed out over the weekend, so they’ll try it again today. The Sheridan High School golfers are scheduled to host the 4-A East Regional today and tomorrow at the Powder Horn. First round action is scheduled to get underway at 10 o’clock.

 In local baseball action, the Sheridan Troopers open their 2008 season this week with a road game at Gillette, Saturday. They also play in Billings Sunday, and play their home opener on May 30th.
  
The annual Mars Big Horn Soccer Cup Youth Soccer Tournament wrapped up yesterday at the Big Horn Events Center. 112 teams from Wyoming, Montana, and South Dakota all competed. Poor weather met the teams Saturday, with fields having to have snow shoveled off Saturday morning. But the weather broke, and the final day had great conditions.
  
The Colorado Rockies lost at San Diego 6-1 yesterday. The Padres took 2 out of the 3 game series. They are off today, and open a three game series tomorrow night in Houston. We will have that game for you live on AM 14-10 KWYO. Broadcast time tomorrow will be at 7 o’clock.

The Lady Bronc soccer team opened up the Girls 4-East Regional Tournament in Cheyenne yesterday and were eliminated from post season play, losing to Cheyenne East 3-0. The Bronc soccer team played their first round match in Gillette yesterday. The Broncs’ season came to an end also, with a 3-0 loss against Cheyenne Central.

With the soccer season concluded, now it’s onto track and field:

The Class 1-A, 2-A, and 4-A regional track meets open today in Cheyenne at Okie Blanchard Stadium at Cheyenne East High School. Bronc and Lady Bronc head coach Art Bauers says they have several athletes already qualified for the State Meet, and several more have a chance this weekend to make it to Casper next week: Audio.

The Tongue River and Big Horn High School golfers close out their spring season at the Hay Creek Golf Course in Wright this weekend. Next, on Monday and Tuesday the Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers host the 4-A North Conference Tournament at the Powder Horn. Tee time each day will be at 10am.

The Snickers Cup Youth Soccer Tournament will be played this weekend at the Big Horn Events Center. Hundreds of youth soccer players and their families from around the region will be in town. The tournament runs tomorrow and Sunday.

The Sheridan Lady Broncs open their regional soccer tournament this afternoon in Cheyenne. They play a first round match against Cheyenne East. They lost two 1-0 matches against the T-Birds this season. Head coach Chris Cook: Audio. And even being the underdog going into the tournament, they have a lot to play for: Audio. Cook says the Lady Broncs just need to play with confidence: Audio.

The Bronc soccer teams open their regional in Gillette this afternoon against Cheyenne Central. They dropped two against the Indians during the regular season. Head coach Kevin Riser says the Broncs seem pretty loose going into the tournament, and feel like they belong with the rest of the teams: Audio. And after a big win to finish up the regular season last Saturday, the Broncs are playing with a lot of confidence:Audio . Both teams must win today to stay alive in the tournament, and would advance to the semi finals tomorrow. More importantly, victories today punch their tickets to the State Tournament.
  
Nearly 450 athletes will compete in the Class 1-4, 2-A and 4-A Regional Track Meet at Cheyenne East High School tomorrow and Saturday. Sheridan High School will have the biggest number of athletes competing, with Laramie right behind including Big Horn, Tongue River, and Arvada/Clearmont.  Almost 100 Sheridan County athletes will participate. The top eight in each event qualify for the State Championships next week. Other qualifiers are those that have already met the qualifying standards set before the season started. Events get underway tomorrow morning and wrap up Saturday evening. The All Class State Championships will start next Thursday in Casper.


The end of the old press box at Homer Scott Stadium.

The deconstruction of Homer Scott Stadium has begun. The old press box is the first thing to go. The new field turf will go in next;. a company from Denver has been retained to put in the new artificial surface. A new entrance walk-way from the high school parking lot will also be going in this summer, along with both home and visitor bleacher upgrades. The total project is set to be finished by the time the Bronc football team opens pre-season drills in the middle of August. The Broncs open the season August 30th with a zero week game with Rapid City Central High School. The game will be played in Gillette. The home opener for the Broncs will be September 5th against Miles City, Montana.

The Colorado Rockies rallied for a big come from behind win last night. It was a win reminiscent of last September’s 21-1 run. That got the Rockies to the World Series down 3-0. The spring sports season enters the post season tomorrow with the Sheridan High School soccer teams opening regional tournaments. The Broncs will be in Gillette, with the Lady Broncs in Cheyenne. The Lady Broncs open with Cheyenne East. They lost to East twice during the regular season by scores of 1-0. One match was in overtime. The Lady Broncs have suffered many of those types of losses this spring, and haven’t gotten many breaks to go their way. Head coach Chris Cook says they need to go out and make some of their own luck and breaks Thursday: Audio. The match will be played Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock. The winner advances to play 2nd seeded Cheyenne Central in the semi finals on Friday afternoon.

The Broncs are in the same position as the Lady Broncs: facing elimination tomorrow. A win puts them in the semi finals and earns them a trip to the State Tournament. The Broncs open with Cheyenne Central. They dropped both regular season matches against Central, as well. Head coach Kevin Riser talks about what it’s going to take for the Broncs to break through against Central: Audio.  The winner of the match will play Cheyenne East in the semi finals Friday.

Track and field regionals for our Sheridan County teams open Friday in Cheyenne and Cheyenne East High School. The Class 1-A and 2-A East and the 4-A East Regionals all will be held at Okie Blanchard Stadium. Events begin Friday morning.

The Broncs and Lady Broncs opened up practice yesterday, now preparing for the post season. Head coach Art Bauers says all track athletes this spring have had to battle through tough weather conditions: Audio. And even though conditions were less than ideal for most of the competition, they’ve had a good spring Audio. Again, the track regionals begin Friday in Cheyenne for all of our Sheridan County teams.
  
The 4-A East Girls Regional Soccer Tournament opens Thursday afternoon in Cheyenne. The Lady Broncs will play at 3 o’clock Thursday. The Broncs will play at the Boys East Regional in Gillette. They open Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock, as well. Lady Broncs coach Chris Cook says they feel confident this week as they prepare for the match Thursday: Audio. And with many close calls during the regular season, they just need to focus a little more to get themselves over the top: Audio.
  
The Broncs got a big lift heading into the week with that big win at Gillette Saturday. They hit the field with a lot of enthusiasm yesterday. Head coach Kevin Riser: Audio.  Even though it’s not official today who they will play Thursday, Riser says they have a pretty good idea of who they will be lining up against: Audio. The soccer regional first round games are single elimination: if they win the opener, they play for seeding for the State Tournament.
  
The Tongue River and Big Horn golfers will end their spring golf season Saturday at their conference tournament in Wright. The Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers will end their spring season next week at the Powder Horn, hosting the 4-A East Conference Tournament on Monday and Tuesday.

The rosters for the 2008 Wyoming All-Star Basketball teams have been announced. Three Sheridan County players have been named to the rosters. For the boys - and no surprise - Rob Johnson from Tongue River High School is on the squad. Johnson is a six time All-State basketball and football player for the girls. Two Sheridan Lady Broncs made this year’s team: they are Laura Quist and Erica Stender. The rest of the girls’ roster includes Kristen Scheffler from Lovell. Scheffler will play for the Wyoming Cowgirls this fall. The rest of the team has Chelsey Lybeck from Cheyenne Central, Amanda Wilmore from Rock Springs, Kada Williams from Green River, Danni White from Lander, Kelsey Scott from Douglas, Kendall Avery from Laramie, and Jannel Scheureman of Worland.

 Joining Rob Johnson on the boys roster will be Jerad Anderson of Buffalo, Ryan Hutchinson and Justin Nelson from Gillette, Jason Moyte from Cheyenne Central, Branden Allen from  Rock Springs, Cody Emrick from Sundance, Liethaniel Peahrora from Wind River, Galand Thaxton from Laramie, and Austin Kofed from Evanston.. This year’s games will be played in the Hoffman Dome at Sheridan College Friday night, June 20th at 6pm and 8pm. The games with Billings will be played June 21st, also at 6pm and 8 pm. All four games will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO.
  
High school track and field regionals will be held this weekend at several sites around the state. All five of our Sheridan County teams will be competing in Cheyenne Friday and Saturday. Big Horn, Tongue River, NSI and Arvada/Clearmont will compete in the 1-A and 2-A East Regional, and the Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs will be in the 4-A East Regional. Both meets will take place at Okie Blanchard Stadium at Cheyenne East High School.
  
The Sheridan Bronc soccer team finished off their regulars on Saturday with a big victory over the Camels. The Broncs took the game in a rout 4-1. Head coach Kevin Riser: Audio. The Broncs’ season went like this: they won their first game and last games with 10 losses and two ties in the middle. Riser says the win Saturday came at a good time, as they get ready for their regional tournament: Audio.  And I asked Riser what made the difference in Saturday’s game: Audio. The Broncs will be in Gillette for the East Boys Regional Friday and Saturday, while the Lady Broncs head to Cheyenne for the Girls East Regional. The State Championships will be played in Laramie beginning May 15th.
  
The high school golf spring season ends Saturday for the Big Horn and Tongue River teams. They will play at the 2-A East Regional at Hay Creek Golf Course in Wright.

The Sheridan Bronc soccer match with Gillette scheduled last night has been re-scheduled for Saturday in the razor city. Games will be early: the JV’s will play at 9am; the varsity will go at 11 o’clock. That match will end the regular season. The Broncs will head back to Gillette for the regional tournament next weekend.
  
The Lady Broncs and Camels did play last night at Homer Scott Stadium Playing conditions were cold, wet and windy but the players tried to make the most out of the situation. Lady Bronc head coach Chris Cook: Audio.  Gillette scored the game’s only goal in the second half, to take the win 1-0. You just had a feeling one team was going to score a flukey goal, and it was Gillette that cashed in: Audio. Last night’s match ends the regular season for the Lady Broncs. They finish with a record of 1-11-2 overall. Most of the losses were one goal matches, and several came in overtime. Cook says not much in the regular season went their way, but now they have a chance to turn it around in the post season: Audio.  
  
In high school track and field action, cancellations are all over the state. Regional meets will be held next Friday and Saturday. Every Sheridan County team will be in Cheyenne. The Sheridan teams will compete in the 4-A East Regional hosted by Cheyenne East High School. The Big Horn, Tongue River, NSI and Arvada/Clearmont teams will compete in their regional mee,t also at Cheyenne East. The State Championships open May 15th at Casper Kelly Walsh High School.
  
In spring high school golf action, today’s tournament in Sheridan will not be played at Kendrick Golf Course. The spring season ends next week for the Tongue River and Big Horn golfers at their Conference Tournament at Devils Tower. Sheridan High School will host the 4-A Conference Tournament at the Powder Horn Monday and Tuesday, May 12th and 13th.

In Sheridan Rec District news: registration continues this week for summer girls’ softball. Also, adult summer softball teams are practicing for the start of their season. This past week, they had their annual managers meeting. League play begins May 26th.

In local golf tournament news, the Kendrick Golf Association season opening scramble is still scheduled for Sunday. The association opens the tournament season every year. The fee to join the Kendrick Association is $10 per year. Association members donate time for projects at Kendrick Golf Course.. The tournament is open to association members. If you are not a member, just pay the $10 for yearly dues, and $25 entry fee for the scramble, which includes lunch. The teams will be selected through a blind draw Sunday morning. Shot gun tee time is 9am. To sign up, stop by the Kendrick Golf Course club house.

 In two weeks, the Sheridan College Booster Club will host their annual spring fundraising golf tournament at the Powder Horn. The tournament is a four person team scramble, And will be played Friday, May 16th with a start time of 1 pm. Dinner will follow play. The cost is $85 per golfer. Get your teams together and contact Todd Cooper at Sheridan College by calling 674-6446 ex. 4002.

The Colorado Rockies are back at Coors Field, to open a three game home series with division rival Los Angeles. You can hear tonight’s game live on AM 14-10 KWYO at 6:30pm. You can hear Saturday’s game live at 5:30pm and Sunday afternoon at 12:30pm.

POSTPONED 9am - The SHS boys' soccer game in Gillette, originally scheduled for today, has been postponed until Saturday at 9am & 11am.
  
The Sheridan Bronc soccer team will close out the regular season tonight with matches in Gillette. The Broncs are 1-10-2 overall, hoping to get that elusive first conference victory. Following tonight’s match, it’s onto the regional tournament. Broncs head coach Kevin Riser says the Broncs may not have gotten the results they wanted this year in terms of winning matches, but they have competed well in most of them and are looking forward to the post season: Audio. If matches are played this evening, they will play in Gillette at 4 and 6pm.
  
The Lady Broncs are scheduled to host Gillette tonight in the regular season finale. For both teams, matches are scheduled for 4 and 6 o’clock. The Lady Broncs have the same record as the Broncs, with lots of close one goal defeats many coming in overtime. Head coach Chris Cook says their main focus the last couple of weeks has been building momentum heading into next week’s regional tournament: Audio. The East 4-A Soccer Regional will be played in Gillette next weekend. The top four teams advance to the State Tournament, which begins May 15th in Laramie.
  
In other local action this week: weather could be the star this week, as snow threatens contests tomorrow and Saturday. The high school track and field season is scheduled to end this weekend. Next week, teams will head into the post season, with regionals and the State Championships in two weeks. The Sheridan teams are to compete in Gillette tomorrow, and the rest of our Sheridan County teams are scheduled to run at in Newcastle Saturday. That’s all on hold. The Big Horn, Tongue River, Arvada/Clearmont, and NSI teams will be in Cheyenne next weekend for their regional meet. The Broncs and Lady Broncs will be in Laramie for the 4-A East Regional.
  
One of the highlights for Sheridan track this spring has been the performance of the Bronc sprinters. Their success has spilled over to other events, as well. Justin Will has set two new school records in the long jump this spring. Boomer McLaughlin has done well the last four weeks in the high jump. The Bronc 4x100 meter relay team is the favorite to win a State Championship. The good vibrations have also crossed over into the hurdle events and the distance races, as Danny Rojo and Brandon Forrister have been consistent all spring in the hurdle events. Ryan Sorenson and Dylan Morin have been solid in the distances, including Wes Neuman in the 800 meters. Head coach Art Bauers says it really started this spring for the Broncs with the sprinters:Audio.
  
The high school spring golf season also closes out next week for the Tongue River and Big Horn golfers. They play their conference tournament in Wright next Saturday. The Sheridan High School golfers will host the East 4-A Conference tournament at the Powder Horn May 12th and 13th.

The Colorado Rockies lost at San Francisco 3-2 yesterday. Today is an off day, and the Rockies need it. They’ve lost four out of five, and open a weekend series at Coors Field with the Los Angeles Dodgers tomorrow night. Game one can be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO. Broadcast time is set for 6:30.
