03/12/08 Sports for Wedensday

The Sheridan Lady Bronc soccer team made it to the semi finals at the State Tournament last spring. This season they have many good players back, and expect to make another run at the State Tournament. The squad is at full strength this week, with the Lady Bronc basketball players back with the team after their season ended Saturday. Lady Bronc head coach Chris Cook says they’ve had some good work-outs over the last several days. The season was scheduled to begin Saturday, but a schedule changed has moved the start back to a home match with Casper Natrona next Tuesday, and Cook says they welcome a few extra days of practice.. Matches next Tuesday will have the JV’s at 4 o’clock and the varsity at six.

The Broncs open the spring with a new head coach Kevin Riser. Riser came to Sheridan last fall as a teacher at the high school. He is also on the Sheridan Bronc football staff. Riser has been pleasantly surprised this spring with a great turn out of players. That’s a great first step for a Bronc team that hasn’t been much of a factor in Wyoming High School soccer. The Broncs have made the State Tournament just three times in the last 10 years, and have never won a game. Riser says their goal this year is to turn around seasons of futility. The Broncs open the season at Natrona County next Tuesday, and play at home a week from tomorrow against Casper Kelly Walsh.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc track teams open their seasons at an invitational meet Saturday in Casper. 96 athletes have come out to participate this spring; that’s a high turn out. In track and field, senior leadership is a big factor. Head coach Art Bauers expects one of those seniors to be Kyle Grammens, Grammens has been a big part of the Sheridan track teams for the last four years, and he says it’s the role of the senior class to set the tone for the season. Bauers also says the seniors need to take that role and become mentors to the underclassmen. Sheridan High School will host their big meet this spring at the Dan Hansen Invitational April 19th.

The Sheridan Troopers and Sheridan Jets are getting in some indoor baseball work-outs. Several players worked out during the winter, and now it’s time to start getting ready for the upcoming season tonight. It starts with the annual player / parent meeting at the Legion Hall in downtown Sheridan. The meeting will start tonight at 7 o’clock. All players and their parents are asked to be there tonight. The coaches will present the program to line out player expectations and answer questions. The first outdoor practice at Thorne-Rider Stadium will be April 15th. The season opens with games in Gillette and Billings May 16th and 17th. The home opener will be May 26th against Casper.

The Sheridan American Legion Post#7 will host a fundraising event next week. They are bringing in the Harlem Ambassadors basketball show. The Ambassadors will take on a team of local celebrities. The game will be played next Wednesday night at 7 o’clock in the Sheridan Junior High Gym. Tickets are currently available at several locations in town. The cost is $8 for adult and $6 for students and seniors. Children 4 and under get in free. Tickets at the door will be $10 and $8. All proceeds from the event go to support American Legion Post #7 youth programs.

But the team played two more tough games, and battled Natrona County to the final minute to win 47-45 Saturday. They finished up the season taking 5th at the State Tournament, and winning 20 games against just 6 losses. Lady Bronc senior Erica Stender says after losing the opening game Thursday, they just wanted to end the season winning two games. Senior Laura Quist had a great State Tournament, averaging 18 points in three games with a high of 28 against Green River Friday. She says it’s a good feeling go out with a win. And the Lady Broncs’ third senior Rachel Ryan says they all had a great run with the Lady Broncs. They finish the season with a 20-6 record. Head Coach Mark Elliott says it was a good finish to the tournament after a tough loss Thursday. A big part of their success Friday and Saturday came with good minutes off the bench from underclassmen Amber Marosok, Emily Reichart, Hillary Pilch and Kylee Kinzer. Elliott says the contribution of their three seniors made for a great three year run for the Lady Broncs

The big tournament opener is tomorrow for the Sheridan Lady Broncs They enter the tournament as a three seed and the defending state champs, but it’s going to take a great effort to get back to that title game. They open with Rock Springs tomorrow. A win sets a possible match-up with Cheyenne Central in the semi finals. Central beat the Lady Broncs last week at the Regional Tournament. The Lady Broncs beat Central twice during the regular season, but this is tournament basketball and if last week’s State Tournament means anything, the top seeds are in a tough spot. Last week was full of upsets, and expect that trend to continue in Casper this week. Lady Bronc head coach Mark Elliott says even though they ended up third coming out of the regionals, they feel good about their position heading into the tournament. Rock Springs hasn’t had a great tradition at the State Tournament, but Elliott says this year is different (the Lady Tigers have a dangerous team.

03/03/08 Sports for Monday

The Big Horn Lady Rams are the 2008 State 2-A Basketball champs. They beat rival Tongue River for the title 47-32 Saturday night in Casper. Tongue River reached their 4th consecutive title game, and had won four straight against Big Horn, including an overtime win over the Rams in last year’s State Title Game. But this time, it was the Lady Rams’ turn to hoist the trophy head. The Lady Rams were coming off a thrilling double overtime win in the semi finals against Mountain View, and seemed to be on a mission during their three day run to the title; and they got it done with great defense. It’s been a great year for Big Horn High School athletics. Last spring, the Lady Rams won the State Track Championship; this past fall they won the Volleyball State Title; and add the basketball championship to start 2008 to go along with that. The Rams football team played for the State Championship last fall, as well.

The amazing three year championship run for the Tongue River girls ended with a fourth consecutive trip to the State Title game. The Tongue River Lady Eagles have a great tradition in winning basketball at the State Tournament. Since 1990, the Lady Eagles have won 6 State Championships; they were the runner up twice. That goes along with four 3rd place finishes.

The Arvada/Clearmont girls made it to the State Title game for the second year in a row. Last year, they won the school’s first State Title ever. This year, the run ended when they ran into a really good Southeast team. Southeast led wire to wire, and played great defense in shutting down Lady Panther post player Morgan Mines. They were able to keep the ball out of her hands, built up a big lead, and took the title game 47-29. Lady Panthers head coach Bill Joy say it was the Cyclones defense that made the difference, and it was a great performance by the Lady Panthers to make it to the championship game for the 2nd straight year.

The Tongue River Eagles upset Wyoming Indian in an overtime battle Thursday night. They played Sundance into overtime in the semi finals Friday night before losing that game, and didn’t have much left on Saturday when they lost against Wind River in the third place game. The highlight of the week was the overtime win Thursday night, when All-State post player Rob Johnson fouled out in the 4th quarter. The Eagles fought through into overtime to win the game.

The 4-A East Regional was played in Cheyenne last week. The Broncs were eliminated from post season play Thursday against Laramie. The Lady Broncs lost a close game in the semi finals with Cheyenne Central, then came back to beat Cheyenne East 66-61 in the 3rd place game. The Lady Broncs will be a three seed when the State Tournament starts Thursday in Casper. They will play Rock Springs in the first round. That game will be played at Casper College at 4:30 Thursday afternoon, and we will have all the action live for you on AM 14-10 KWYO.

They were eliminated yesterday by Western Nebraska 84-78. They led by seven at halftime before falling in the 2nd half. For the season, they finish with an impressive 28-4 record.

The Generals are still alive at their Region Nine Tournament in Torrington They beat Otero CC in the first round Saturday 97-78. Today, they open the quarter finals against Western Wyoming.
