01/31/08 Sports for Thursday The Lady Generals made quick work of Little Horn CC last night, building up a 29 point halftime lead and cruising to a 104-56 win. It was a good win, given the fact that Little Horn has been playing better. Coach Frank Mcarthy says it was a scary game, in which the Lady Generals needed to play well. At 19-2 and 3-0 in north sub region play, the Lady Generals are having the best season the program has had since they went to the National Tournament in 2000. The Lady Generals play at home Friday and Saturday against Western Wyoming and Casper College. It took a while for the Generals to settle into last night’s game. The Generals trailed Little Horn until the 7 minute mark in the first half. They tied to the score at 30, then finished the half on a 27 to 6 run, to take command; and they went on to hammer the Rams 117-77. The Generals will host Western and Casper. Game times Friday and Saturday will be at 6 and 8 o’clock. We will broadcast both games live on AM 1410 KWYO Saturday night. The Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs have another round of conference games this week with the Cheyenne schools. The Lady Broncs are 3-1 in conference play. Head coach Mark Elliott says these road games are huge for the Lady Broncs. The Broncs open a five game home stand tomorrow night with Cheyenne East. Broncs coach Mike Ibach says it’s nice to know they play the next three weeks at home. We will broadcast tomorrow night’s game live on AM 1410 KWYO starting at 7:30pm. The Tongue River teams play at Sundance tomorrow. On Saturday, the Eagles play at Rocky Mtn., while the Lady Eagles host Rocky Mtn. Next Tuesday, both teams host games with Greybull. Those games were postponed last Saturday. The Sheridan Broncs wrestlers compete in the Riverton Invitational tomorrow and Saturday All the state’s top teams will compete The Bronc swimmers host a dual with Riverton tomorrow evening, and compete at an invitational in Gillette Saturday. The Bronc and Lady Bronc indoor track teams will compete at a big meet at Black Hills State University in Spearfish Saturday.
01/30/08 Sports for Wednesday The Tongue River Eagles and Lady Eagles hosted games with Moorcroft last night. Both teams walked off the court with convincing victories. The Lady Eagles didn’t mess around with Moorcroft; midway through the first half it was obvious that Moorcroft had no shot, and the Lady Eagles took the game 67-20. Head Coach Diane Moser says the players showed a lot of patience, and they got good minutes from their underclassmen. It took a while for the Eagles to get going, but a strong second half allowed head coach Larry Moser to get plenty of minutes for all the players. Rob Johnson scored 23 points, to lead the Eagles. He hit a three pointer as time ran out in the first half, to give the Eagles a 27-20 lead at halftime. The Eagles came out for the third quarter and outscored Moorcroft 29-14, to pull away and win the game 69-45. Head coach Larry Moser says it took them a half to get going. Friday night, the Eagles play at Sundance, who’s been the top team in the northeast all season. Both teams play at Sundance Friday. The Lady Eagles host Rocky Mountain Saturday, while the Eagles play at Rocky Mountain. The Sheridan College basketball teams play at home tonight; they host north sub-region games with Little Big Horn Community College. The Lady Generals have won five straight, and are 18-2 overall. The Generals are 15-3, and have won three straigh.t. Both teams are unbeaten in north sub region play. Game times are at 6pm and 8pm. The Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs have another round of conference play this weekend. The Lady Broncs will play on the road in Cheyenne. The Broncs host Cheyenne East Friday night at 7:30pm, and Cheyenne Central Saturday afternoon at 1:30pm. Both games will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO. The Big Horn Rams and Lady Rams will play at Wright tomorrow. Those are games that were postponed a couple of weeks ago. They play at Moorcroft Friday, and come home for games with Thermopolis Saturday at 2:30pm and 4pm. The University of Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls are back in MWC play tonight. The Cowgirls are 18-1, and host Utah tonight. The Pokes play at Utah. Broadcast time is 7:30pm on AM 14-10 KWYO. The Sheridan Bronc swimmers host a dual Friday evening with Riverton, and compete in an invitational meet in Gillette Saturday. 01/29/08 Sports for Tuesday The Tongue River basketball teams will play home games tonight against Moorcroft. The games were postponed back on January 18th. The girls varsity game will be played at 5 o’clock; the boys will go 6:30. The Sheridan College basketball teams have three home games this week. The Lady Generals are 18-2 overall. This could be the week they get some national recognition, after beating two ranked opponents. Over the last two weeks, they’ve won five straight. The new top 20 poll comes out tomorrow afternoon. The Lady Generals are putting together a really nice season, and Coach Frank Mcarthy says the pieces to the puzzle have fit well this year. The big factor has been a lot of unselfish play. Generals head coach Joel Davidson also doubles as the ad at Sheridan College. He complimented the Lady Generals on their big win against Miles City, and says if they can win the north sub region title, they would host the Women’s Region Nine Tournament in March. The Generals seem to have turned it around after losing three in a row. They now have won three straight. Both teams have three home games this week, with more sub region games tomorrow night against Little Horn Community College. Games will be at 6 and 8 o’clock. They host Western Wyoming Friday, and we will have the Casper College games on AM 1410 KWYO live Saturday night. The Sheridan Broncs start a five game home stand this week. They host Cheyenne East Friday night, and former coach Mike Jackson and Cheyenne Central Saturday afternoon.. The Lady Broncs will play at East and Central this week. It will be a busy week for the Big Horn Rams and Lady Rams. They play at Wright Thursday, and at Moorcroft Friday before coming home to host games with Thermopolis Saturday. The Sheridan Broncs swimmers have a dual at home Friday evening against Riverton, and compete in an invitational in Gillette Saturday. The Bronc wrestlers will compete at the Riverton Invitational Friday and Saturday. The Sheridan High School indoor track teams will compete at a meet at Black Hills State in Spearfish. In University of Wyoming basketball, the Cowgirls are 18-1, and ranked 15th as they moved up three more spots in the National Top 25 Poll. They host Utah Wednesday night. The Pokes play at Utah live at 7:30 on AM 1410 KWYO. The Annual Elks Hoop Shoot State Championships are coming up in February. Sheridan County will have three representatives competing, after winning their age groups at the district shoot in Powell. In the 10-11 boys age division, competing from Sheridan will be Reed Ritterbush. In the girls 10-11 year age division: Hailey Tripp of Story; and the final competitor is Bailey Robeling from Clearmont. In the 12-13 year old age division, the State Elks Hoop Shoot finals will be in Casper February 16th
01/28/08 Sports for Monday The game Friday set the stage for another epic game Saturday, as the Sheridan College Lady Generals pulled off a big upset at the Hoffman Dome, beating 19th ranked Miles City. The Pioneers came into the game 20-0. They left Sheridan 20-1. The Lady Generals were red-hot in the first half, shooting 70 percent from the field to build up a 15 point halftime lead. Miles City roared back to tie the game late at 71-all, but the Lady Generals got the advantage back, and hit some big free throws in the game’s final minute to win it 85-75. Head coach Frank Mcarthy was very proud of the players. The Lady Generals are 18-2 overal,l and have been ignored in the national polls this season - not getting any votes They’ve beaten two ranked teams the last two weeks. Mcarthy says it about time the players get some recognition. The Generals ended a three game losing streak last week by starting a three game winning streak. They beat Northwest College Tuesday, and beat Dawson and Miles City in close games on the weekend. This week, the Sheridan College teams will play sub region games against Little Horn College Wednesday night in the Hoffman Dome at 6pm and 8 pm. They also host games with Western Wyoming and Casper College Friday and Saturday night. The Sheridan Broncs dropped their 2nd conference game of the season at Gillette last Thursday, as the Broncs fell to 1-2 in conference play. But fortunes could change over the next two-plus weeks, as they play five straight games at home. The Broncs host Cheyenne East Friday night at 7:30, and Cheyenne Central Saturday afternoon at 1:30. In other basketball action from the weekend, the Big Horn Lady Rams continue their winning ways, sweeping two games. They blew out Moorcroft at home, and routed Sundance on the road. The Rams dropped both games, losing at Sundance Saturday 79-55. The Tongue River Eagles and Lady Eagles both picked up victories at Wright Friday. Their games with Greybull were cancelled Saturday, because Highway 14 was closed Saturday; not letting the Greybull teams make the trip. The Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers also picked up two more conference wins, beating up on Kaycee Friday 49-29, and blowing out Upton Saturday 62-23. The Panthers lost both games. The NSI Wolves dropped two games last week. They lost a three point game at home against Kaycee, and lost a 2-point game at Midwest Saturday. The Sheridan High School indoor track teams competed at a meet in Chadron, Nebraska Saturday. No team scores were kept, but there were several outstanding individual performances by the Broncs and Lady Broncs. Top finishers for the girls included Sadie Rhinesmith 15th in the 55 meters and 8th in the Polevault; Steph Pettit was 20th in the 200 meters; Lauren Buyan was 7th in the 400 meters and 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles; Emily Bobinchak and Steph Brown went 8th and 9th in the 800 meters; Lela Carpenter, Dana Morin and Emily Bobinchak were 6th, 8th and 10th in the 1600 meters; Carpenter and Morin were also 5th and 6th in the 3200 meters; Kayla Fauber was 4th in the Polevault; and the 4x400 meter relay team was 4th. For the Broncs, Taylor Beard was 9th in the 55 meters and 12th in the 200 meters; Wesley Neuman was 5th in the 400 meters; Ryan Sorenson was 6th in the 800 meters and 9th in the 1500 meters; Danny Rojo was 7th in the 55 meter hurdles; Kyle Grammes was 19th in the long jump; and the Broncs went 4th and 7th in the 4x400 meter relay. Head coach Art Bauers says it was a huge meet with over 500 competitors, and it was good to see that kind of competition. After a week off, most of the athletes made great improvement. This week, they compete at a meet in Spearfish, South Dakota. The Wyoming Cowboys beat Colorado State Saturday for their first conference win of the year. The Cowgirls beat CSU in Fort Collins Saturday, to improve to 18-1 overall. They were ranked 18th last week. The new rankings come out later today. This week, they play Utah Wednesday night and BYU Saturday. 01/25/08 Sports for Friday The Sheridan Broncs had a great first quarter in Gillette last night, taking the lead 21-17. The Camels came back and led by five at the half, bumped it to eight at the end of third, and never looked back- posting a 68-52 win in Gillette.. Broncs head coach Mike Ibach says that after a good start, they just couldn’t sustain the momentum, and the players are frustrated with another close call with a good team. The Broncs now open a stretch of five home games, and it’s their chance to turn the season around. The Broncs will host Cheyenne East and Central next week. The Sheridan and Gillette girls teams take the court at Sheridan High School tonight. The Lady Camels are ranked number one in Class 4-A; the Lady Broncs are number two. Lady Broncs coach Mark Elliott says they don’t need any pep talks when it comes to playing Gillette. Elliott expects a good battle between the state’s top two teams, and says the game will likely come down to the little things. The sophomores play at 4 o’clock. The JV’s go at 5:45pm, and the varsity game tips at 7:30pm. We will have it live for you on AM 14-10 KWYO. In other basketball action, Kaycee beat NSI in a close game last night at Normative Services 61-55. Kaycee also won the girls game. The Tongue River Eagles and Lady Eagles play at Wright tonight. 01/24/08 Sports for Thursday The Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls played conference games last night. The Pokes lost at UNLV, while the Cowgirls took care of the Rebels in Laramie. The Cowgirls hammered UNLV 87-39. All the Cowgirls chipped in: former Laramie High School All-Stater Aubrey Vandiver had 15 and 10; Justina Podsemska led the way with 19 points. The Cowgirls are 17-1 overall, and 5-0 in MWC play. They are ranked 18th in the country this week. They play their next game at Colorado State Saturday afternoon. The Cowboys lost at UNLV last night 78-71. The Pokes were down by eight at halftime, and tied the game with 5 minutes to play, only to see the Rebels get away at the end. Brandon Ewing led the Cowboys with 26 points. The Pokes fall to 0-5 in conference play and 6-11 overall. They host Colorado State Saturday afternoon, at the Double “AA” at 2 o’clock. The Sheridan Broncs are 1-1 in conference play; the Gillette Camels are 2-0. They play tonight in the Razor City. We will have the game live for you tonight on AM 1410 KWYO. The Lady Generals are 16-2 overall; they host Dawson Community College Friday. The big game is Saturday. Miles City comes into the Hoffman Dome unbeaten at 20-0, and ranked 16th in the country. For the Generals, they stopped their three game losing streak in Powell Tuesday night with a 71-67 win. Head coach Joel Davidson says they had some good performances in that game. The north roster has been announced for the Annual Wyoming Shrine Bowl football game. The game will be played in Casper in June. Four Sheridan County players have been named to the team, and two players were named as alternates. Josh Dunkelberger and Ryan Morton from the Sheridan Broncs; Thomas Nowakowski from Big Horn; and Rob Johnson from Tongue River. Named as alternates are Matt Hurst from Sheridan High School, and Jake St, John from Big Horn. The game will be played on June 14th at Casper Natrona High School.
01/22/08 Sports for Tuesday The Sheridan College Generals and Lady Generals open north sub region play tonight with games at Northwest College in Powell. The Lady Generals are 15-2; they’ve won two in a row overall. Tonight, the Lady Generals face Northwest College for the first time this season. Mcarthy says they are in for a tough game tonight. Not very often do we ever hear the Generals need a win to break a losing streak, but tonight as they open sub region play, they are on a three game losing skid. Coach Joel Davidson says it’s pretty simple: they need to find, what it was that got them to 12-0 and ranked 15th in the country. The Generals are in for another tough outing tonight. While they lost at Eastern and Laramie County over the weekend, Northwest beat both of those teams. We will have the Generals / Trappers live for you tonight on AM 14-10 KWYO. Tip-off is set for 8 o’clock. Tomorrow night, the Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls will play more MWC games. The Cowgirls have won 10 straight, and moved up two spots in the national rankings: this week to number 18. They host UNLV tomorrow night. 01/21/08 Sports for Monday The Sheridan Bronc basketball team is off the “schnide.” The Broncs picked up their first win of the season Friday, winning at Laramie 76-69. But they fell in their game at Riverton Saturday 62-49. This week, the Broncs play at Gillette Thursday night. He Lady Broncs are now 12-1 and 2-0 in conference play. They blew out Laramie and Riverton, winning those games by 23 and 29 points. Coach Mark Elliott says they just went out and took care of business. The Lady Broncs host Gillette Friday night. The Sheridan College Lady Generals are 15-2 after blowing out Eastern Wyoming in Torrington Friday night. They open north sub region play tomorrow night at Northwest College. The Generals had a nightmare weekend at Eastern Wyoming Friday. The Lancers hit a 50 foot buzzer beater to win the game. It was worse on Saturday at Laramie County. The Eagles threw in a 35 foot shot at the gun, to beat the Generals for their third straight loss.. Coach Joel Davidson says it was stunning, to say the least, he’s at a loss for the Generals’ losing streak. The Generals play at Northwest College in Powell tomorrow night. NSI, Big Horn and Tongue River had their games called off Friday because of poor travel conditions. The Big Horn and Tongue River teams were able to get their games in on Saturday. The Eagles lost at Lovell 49-30. The Lady Eagles dropped a 36-33 decision against Lovell. The Big Horn teams swept games at Arvada/Clearmont Saturday. The Lady Rams beat the Lady Panthers 42-33, and the Rams beat Arvada/Clearmont 62-41. The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers took 10th place at a tournament in Thermopolis Saturday. Four Broncs placed, and in their last few matches the Broncs have shown a lot more aggression in their wrestling. Hamrick says his young team is starting to grow week by week. The Broncs’ next match is a conference dual at Riverton Saturday’. The Bronc Swimmers competed in the Buffalo Invitational. Coach Larry White says big improvements continue, and his young team is showing the effects of their hard work. This week, the Broncs host a double dual with the Casper schools Friday. The Wyoming Cowgirls have won ten in a row. The 20th ranked team in the country is 3-0 in conference play after beating San Diego State Saturday 65-49. The Cowgirls host UNLV Wednesday night. The Cowboys never got on track at San Diego State Saturday night. They fell behind 15-0, didn’t score in the games first eight minutes, and lost 70-43. The Pokes play at UNLV Wednesday night. 01/18/08 Sports for Friday The Lady Broncs host Laramie tonight in their conference opener. Lady Broncs coach Mark Elliott says Laramie is a dangerous team, and the Lady Broncs must be at their best. Varsity tip tonight is set for 7:30. The Generals play EWC tonight; then to Cheyenne Saturday to play Laramie County. Coach Joel Davidson says these games are huge for the Generals, since they are coming off a loss. Tonight, Davidson says, the Generals are going to have to play solid basketball to get a win in Torrington. Both teams open north sub region play next Tuesday at Northwest College in Powell. 01/17/08 Sports for Thursday The 20th ranked Wyoming Cowgirls ran their record to 15-1 over-all, and 3-0 in MWC play by winning at the Air Force Academy last night 75-59. Hanna Zavecz led the Cowgirls with a season high 27 points on 11 of 13 shots, including 4 of 5 from three point range. Next up for the Cowgirls: a home game with San Diego State Saturday afternoon. The Pokes lost in overtime 64-62 against Air Force last night. The game went back and forth all night. The Pokes looked like winners in overtime, building up a six point lead ;but missed free throws in the end allowed the Falcons to hit the game winning shot. The Pokes fall to 6-9 overall and 0-3 in conference play. Next up for the Cowboys: a road game Saturday night at San Diego State. The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc basketball teams open conference play tomorrow. The Lady Broncs are 10-1 overall and on a three game winning streak. Coach Mark Elliott says the main goal of conference play is make sure you win all your home games. After their first loss a couple of weeks ago to Evanston, the Lady Broncs have found the form they had when they started the season with seven straight wins. The Broncs are 0-11, and head into conference play with a chance to turn their season around with games at Laramie and Riverton. Both of those teams have their own struggles this seaso,n as well. Broncs Coach Mike Ibach says they just need to find a way to avoid the little let downs during games that have cost them several chances to win. In wrestling action this weekend, the Sheridan Broncs will compete at the Thermopolis Invitational, and the Sheridan Bronc swimmers will be in Buffalo for the Buffalo Invitational. The Sheridan High School indoor track teams are idle this week. They resume their season next Saturday at a meet in Chadron, Nebraska.
01/15/07 Sports for Tuesday Homer Scott Stadium at Sheridan High School is going to get a whole new look, as a new artificial turf field will be going in this spring. Sheridan High School activities director Don Julian stated that the new surface will make the stadium more multi-purpose, and this is the future of stadiums not only around the country but in Wyoming. As far as installation, Julian says it we be ready for fall football practice and the Bronc home football opener. That first game is scheduled for the Broncs to play Miles City, Montana on August 29th. Initial funding - most of which is in the form of private donations - is already in place. Julian will be a guest on Saturday’s Coaches Show with more information on donors and how the public can get involved in the process. The Coaches Show will be broadcast live Saturday mooring at 8 o’clock on AM 14-10 KWYO. In hoops action this week, the Wyoming Cowboys play at the Air Force Academy Wednesday night live on AM 14-10 KWYO at 6 o’clock. Thursday night, the NSI teams will play at Arvada / Clearmont. The Sheridan Lady Broncs are rolling into conference play when they host Laramie and Riverton Friday and Saturday. There is a game time change for the girls’ game Saturday. Riverton does not have a sophomore team, so the JV’s will play at noon, with the varsity game at 1:45. The Broncs will face a struggling Laramie team in Laramie Friday night. The Broncs are still in search of their first win; the Plainsmen have lost six straight. That game will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 o’clock on Saturday. The Broncs play at Riverton at 4:30. Both Bronc games will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO The Big Horn Rams and Lady Rams will be on the road this week. They play at Wright Friday and at Arvada/ Clearmont Saturday. The Sheridan College Generals and Lady Generals will play road games this week. Both teams play at Eastern Wyoming in Torrington Friday .The Generals will also play at Laramie County Saturday. Both teams open north sub region play at Northwest College in Powell on Tuesday.
01/14/08 Sports for Monday The Tongue River Lady Eagles went into Big Horn Friday night and knocked off previously unbeaten Big Horn. The final was 57-50. The Lady Rams led at halftime, but couldn’t hold off the Lady Eagles, who also beat Riverside on the road Saturday. The Lady Rams came back Saturday with a 45-42 win over Kaycee. The Lady Rams are 12-1 overall. The Lady Eagles get to 6-4 overall. They will spend this week at home hosting games with Moorcroft and Lovell. The Lady Rams will play road games at Wright and Arvada/Clearmont. The Tongue River Eagles got 42 points from Rob Johnson Friday, winning at Big Horn 78-66. On Saturday, the Eagles hosted a game with Riverside and took that game as well 61-32. Johnson had 28 against the Rebels. This week, the Eagles host Moorcroft Friday and play at Lovell Saturday. The Rams ended the week with a 2-1 record. They beat NSI Thursday before the TR loss, and came back to beat Kaycee Saturday for their 3rd win of the year. The Rams will play at Wright and Arvada/Clearmont Saturday. The Sheridan Lady Broncs routed Cody and Billings Skyview over the weekend, to run their record to 10-1 overall. They beat Cody by 16 Friday, and beat Skyview 64-44 Saturday. The Lady Broncs open conference play with home games against Laramie and Riverton this week. The Broncs took it on the chin again over the weekend at late comeback fell short against Cody Friday; and a halftime lead fell apart in the third quarter and Skyview beat the Broncs 49-45 on Saturday. Conference play begins this week. Coach Mike Ibach says they will just keep practicing and playing until they can get over the hump. The Broncs play at Laramie Friday and at Riverton Saturday. The Sheridan College Generals’ 38-game home winning streak ended Friday night in a 73-64 loss against Northeastern Colorado. It was the first loss at the Hoffman Dome for the Generals since December of 2004. This week, they play at Eastern Wyoming and Laramie County. The Lady Generals came back from a seven point halftime deficit to win 87-81. Tahnee Robinson had 33 points and 15 rebounds. The Lady Generals are now 14-2 overall They play at Eastern Wyoming Friday night, and then open north sub-region play next Tuesday at Northwest College. The Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers are 10-0. The defending state champs beat up on Hulett and Wright over the weekend, winning 59-26, and beating Class 2-A Wright on the road 32-26. This week, they host NSI Thursday and Big Horn Saturday. The A/C boys lost their only game of the week against Hulett 56-38. This week, the Panthers host NSI Thursday and Big Horn Saturday. The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers finished in 33rd place in the 50th Annual Cowboy Invitational Tournament in Miles City, Montana over the weekend. The Broncs’ lone place winner was Cody McCalla. He finished 4th at 215 pounds. This week, the Broncs host a dual with Kelly Walsh tomorrow night. Varsity matches will begin at 6 o’clock. The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc indoor track teams got their season started Friday in Laramie. The Lady Broncs finished 3rd; the Broncs were 6th. Top finishers for the Lady Broncs in the 400 meters: Stephanie Brown, Emily Bobincak, Lauren Buyan and Erin Kinsey - all finished in the top 10. Bobinchak, Lela Carpenter and Dana Morin finished in the top seven in the 800 meters. Buyan was 3rd in the 55 meter hurdles, Marrissa Dahmke was 4th, and Hiedi Montano won the long jump. In the triple jump, Kayla Fauber was 3rd and Brielle Green was 4th. Fauber also was 3rd in the pole vault. Top finishers for the Broncs included Taylor Beard, who was 6th in the 55 meters and 8th in the 200 meters; Wesley Newman was 5th in the 800 meters; Dylan Morin was 7th in the 1600 meters; and Kyle Roberts was 9th in the 55 meter hurdles. In the field events, The Sheridan Bronc swimmers dropped a dual meet at Cheyenne East Friday, and competed in the Cheyenne Invitational Saturday. This week, the Broncs will compete in the Buffalo Invitational Saturday. The Wyoming Cowgirls are 2-0 in conference play after beating TCU at home Saturday. The Pokes got blown out at TCU this week. The Cowboys play Wednesday night at the Air Force Academy. That game will be broadcast live on AM 1410 KWYO at 6 o’clock. The Annual Sheridan Elks Hoop Shoot took place Saturday. Winners in the 8-9 year old division were Tana Dahlberg of Buffalo, and Noah Gustufson of Sheridan. In the 10-11 year old age division, winners were Haily Tripp from Story and Reed Ritterbush from Sheridan. And in the 12-13 year old division, winners were Baily Roebling of Clearmont and Trey Kaufmann of Sheridan. All the winners advance to the district event in Powell this Saturday.
01/11/08 Sports for Friday In basketball action from last night, the Big Horn Rams started their three game home stand with a 62-59 win over NSI last night. The Rams are 2-10 heading into tonight’s game with Tongue River. The Wolves are 5-5. They play at home tonight against Midwest. The Sheridan Broncs are the only team in Sheridan County without a victory. This could be the weekend the Broncs break through. It starts tonight against Cody. The Cody Broncs have dropped down from Class 4-A to Class 3-A this season. Sheridan head coach Mike Ibach likes their chances against Cody. The game will tip-off tonight at 7 o’clock and you can hear it live on AM 14-10 KWYO. Tomorrow, the Broncs play Billings Skyview. The Broncs lost at Skyview back on December 20th. It was a close game, and they would like to pay Skyview back for that loss. That game will tip-off Saturday night at 7:30 and can also be heard on AM 14-10 KWYO. Sheridan Lady Broncs will play at Cody tonight and at Skyview Saturday. Head coach Mark Elliott says the Lady Broncs must get their game form back from December. The Lady Broncs have already beaten Skyview That was before Christmas, and Elliott says they just need to go out on the road and take care of business. The Big Horn and Tongue River basketball teams play in Big Horn tonight. The last time the girls teams played, it was for the 2-A State Title last March, which Tongue River won in overtime. The Lady Eagles have won three straight 2-A titles, and the Lady Rams have their entire team back from that State Tournament run last spring. They are unbeaten, and a front runner to win this year’s title. Lady Eagles head coach Diane Moser knows they have a tough task in front of them tonight. The girls game will tip-off at 5:30. The Big Horn and Tongue River boys games seem to always be close. Eagles coach Larry Moser says these games are always good. The boys game will tip-off at 7 o’clock. Tomorrow, the Rams and Lady Rams play home games against Kaycee. The Tongue River Lady Eagles play at Riverside, and the Eagles will host Riverside. The NSI Wolves will play Midwest at home tonight for their only game of the weekend. The Arvada /Clearmont Panthers and Lady Panthers will host games with Hulett tonight. The Lady Panthers will also play at Wright tomorrow. The Sheridan College basketball teams open up 2008 tonight, with home games with Northeastern Colorado. The Generals and plainsmen have dominated Region Nine for the last three seasons. Both teams head into tonight’s showdown nationally ranked. The Generals are 14th in the country this week. Head Coach Joel Davidson expects a great game. The Lady Generals are having a great season, and NJC is also very good this season. Coach Frank McCarthy says they are looking forward to the challenge. Game times in the Hoffman Dome tonight are set for 6 and 8 pm. The Sheridan Bronc wrestling teams opens up a two day tournament later today in Miles City, Montana. The Bronc swimmers are on the road in Cheyenne today and tomorrow. Today, they have a dual at Cheyenne East and will compete in the Cheyenne Invitational tomorrow. The high school indoor track and field season begins today for the Sheridan High School teams. They will compete at a meet in Cheyenne today. The Sheridan Hawks hockey team is on the road this weekend. They will play three games in Douglas. Action begins today and ends Sunday. Wyoming Cowboys and Cowgirls have conference games tomorrow. The Cowgirls host TCU; the Cowboys will play at TCU. You can hear that game live tomorrow on AM 14-10 KWYO, beginning at 3:30. The Annual Elks Hoop Shoot Freethrow Shooting Competition takes place tomorrow at the Hoffman Dome. All the competitors tomorrow have pre-qualified for this event by competing in their schools. Shooting gets underway at 2:30. The Knights of Columbus will host their Annual Youth Freethrow Shooting Contest Sunday afternoon at the Hoffman Dome. The contest is open to all Sheridan County boys and girls ages 10-14. Registration opens at noon, with the contest set to start at 1 o’clock.
01/10/08 Sports for Thursday The Wyoming Cowgirls opened up MWC play last night at New Mexico, and for the first time since 1995 the Cowgirls won in the pit, taking last night’s conference opener 58-52. Hanna Zavec led the way with 14 points, and with those points moved into 6th place on the Cowgirls all-time scoring list as a junior. Next up for the Cowgirls: a home game with TCU Saturday at 1 o’clock. The Sheridan College Generals moved up in the national rankings this week, as they get ready to re-start their season tomorrow. The Generals are 12-1, and moved up three spots this week at number 14. Tomorrow, the Generals face Northeastern Colorado. NJC has won two out of the last three Region Nine championships. The loss was to the Generals three seasons ago. NJC is ranked 21st in the country this week. The Lady Generals are 13-2 overall. They face one of their toughest challenges tomorrow: NJC has been ranked in the top 20 most of this season, before falling out of the rankings just before Christmas break. In other Region Nine women’s basketball notes, the Miles City team is 16-0 and ranked 18th in the country. The Lady Generals play the pioneers at home on the 26th. Game times tomorrow night are at 6 and 8 o’clock. The Big Horn and Tongue River basketball teams get together tomorrow night in Big Horn. The Lady Eagles are the three-time defending State Champions, and are playing right around .500 basketball so far this season. The Eagles are rolling; as senior Rob Johnson is really starting to take over his roll as the team leader. In his last game, he went for 27 points and 13 rebounds. Head coach Larry Moser says the team has really been playing well, and Moser says the leadership of Johnson and Brett Cherni has been a big help. Game times tomorrow night in Big Horn are scheduled for 5:30 and 7 pm. The Sheridan Lady Broncs will play on the road tomorrow at Cody. Saturday, they play at Billings Skyview. 01/09/08 Sports for Wednesday The Sheridan Broncs found out how tough number one Casper Natrona will be this season. The Mustangs led wire to wire, building up an 18 point second half lead and winning 60-46. NC led 27-19 at halftime. The Broncs tried to hang close in the third quarter, but the Mustangs’ pressure defense caused a couple of Bronc turnovers, and they built up the big lead and never let up. The Broncs were able to find TJ Stender. He scored 13 points in the paint against a much bigger team point guard. Justin Will had a nice game as well, with 12 points. The Broncs have played nine straight on the road, and get to spend this weekend at home with two games against Cody and Billings Skyview. And at 0-9, Ibach says there’s no quit in the team. The Broncs host Cody Friday night. Game time is 7 o’clock. Saturday’s tip with Skyview will be at 7:30. The Lady Broncs are 8-1. They will play at Cody and Billings Skyview this weekend. Next week, conference play begins with the Broncs at Laramie and Riverton. The Lady Broncs will play those teams at home. 01/02/08 Sports for Wednesday The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers worked out yesterday at Sheridan High School at the same time. Sheridan High School track coach Art Bauers held the first workout of the indoor track season at Sheridan High School. Even though it was New Years Day, Bauers says they had to begin practice yesterday for the athletes to be eligible for the first meet on January 11th. It may have been chilly outside yesterday, but the students were anxious to get their season started. Several of the long distance runners ran outdoors yesterday; the popularity of indoor track continues to grow, and not only in Sheridan County. Bauers says one of the big pluses is now adding the indoor season to the outdoor season, which begins the first week in March. The season now runs for five months. Also attending practices yesterday were several other students who compete in other spring sports that use the winter track season to get in shape for their season - most notably soccer. The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers were practicing yesterday, as well. The next competition for the Broncs will be a dual at Buffalo next Tuesday. The Broncs will host a dual with Casper Kelly Walsh on the 15th. Those will be their final home matches of the season until they host the East Regional in February. The high school basketball teams get going again Friday. We will start the New Year with a Sheridan double header Friday night in Riverton. We will have the Lady Broncs playing Evanston at 5:45. The Broncs will follow at 7:30. The games are being played at Central Wyoming Community College, and can be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO Saturday.
