12/27/07 Sports for Thursday

In local basketball action, most of our Sheridan County high school basketball teams will hold some kind of work-out until school resumes. There is one however, that won’t see each other until January 2nd - that’s the Sheridan Lady Broncs. The coaches came up with their system of taking the entire holiday break off. Players can work out on their own if they wish. You can’t argue with success, as the defending state champs are 7-0. Head coach Mark Elliott says the goal this year is to have a chance to defend their title, and through the first seven games they’ve been pleased with what they’ve seen. The Lady Broncs get back into action with games against Evanston and Star Valley January 4th and 5th. Those games will be played in Riverton at Central Wyoming Community College.

The Broncs are 0-7. As the holiday break begins, the Broncs aren’t allowing a lot of points, with pretty good defensive play. Their problem has been that as a group they’ve had trouble staying consistent on the offensive end of the court. The coaches and players are using the time off to work on that area. Coach Mike Ibach believes if they can put a couple of good scoring games together, they’ll be fine. The Broncs will join the Lady Broncs on that trip to Riverton January 4th and 5th. All four of those varsity games will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO.

The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers will be getting some quality practice time until their season resumes January 8th. They have a dual match at Buffalo, then a trip to a tournament in Miles City, Montana. Coach Corey Hamrick says they can get a lot done during their time off. The Broncs also added another home date to their schedule: they will host a match with Casper Kelly Walsh January 15th.

The Big Horn Rams and Lady Rams will play their first home games of the season, hosting Riverside on January 4th and Wright on the 5th.

The Tongue River teams come back with games on January 4th with Moorcroft. Both games will be in Moorcroft on the 5th. The Eagles host Thermopolis, while the Lady Eagles play on the road at Thermop.

The Sheridan College Generals and Lady Generals resume their schedules with home games on January 11th with Northeastern Colorado.

The Wyoming Cowboys play their next game at home Saturday afternoon against Wisconsin – Milwaukee. We will broadcast the game live for you on AM 14-10 KWYO starting at 1 o’clock.

The Wyoming Cowgirls are 11-1 and ranked 24th in the country. They play their next game on the road at San Francisco January 3rd. That game will also be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO.

12/26/07 Sports for Wednesday

The Sheridan College basketball teams combined to go 25-3 during the first half of their season. The Generals will open the new year ranked 17th in the National Junior College Basketball Poll with a 12-1 record.. The Lady Generals had an excellent first half going 13-2, by far their best start in years. The Generals and Lady Generals get back into action with home games January 11th.

The Sheridan Lady Broncs and Big Horn ended 2007 unbeaten and ranked number one their respective classes. The Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers are also among the unbeaten, and ranked 2nd in Class 1-A.. The Tongue River Lady Eagles sit at 4-4 overall.

The Lady  Broncs enter the holiday break at 7-0. Not messing with success, the defending 4-A state champs will take the entire break off from the court. The important part of the season really begins when conference play starts. The Lady Broncs open 2008 January 4th and 5th, with games against Star Valley and Evanston. Those games will be played in Riverton.

On the boys side, the Tongue River Eagles are holding the fifth spot in the Class 2-A rankings as the new year begins, with a record of 5-3 overall. The Big Horn Rams are 1-8. The Sheridan Broncs are 0-7 and the NSI Wolves sit at 2-3 overall.

The Broncs have gotten off to a slow start at 0-7. Head coach Mike Ibach says they need the time over the break to get ready for the long grind of January and February. The thing holding the Broncs back through these first seven games has been scoring. Ibach says the players and coaches need to stay positive and have got to get more work on putting the ball in the hoop. The Broncs join the Lady Broncs for that road trip to Riverton January 4th and 5th.

The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers are 3-6 in dual matches as they head into the meat of their schedule in 2008. Head coach Corey Hamrick says the inexperienced Broncs have had a good month, and his young wrestlers have done a good job competing, and the learning process continues. The Broncs open the new year with a dual match at Buffalo January 8th and a trip to Miles City, Montana for a tournament on the 11th and 12th.

The Wyoming Cowgirls finished 2007 ranked 24th in the National College Top 25 Basketball Poll. The Cowgirls are 11-1, and play their next game on January 3rd at the University of San Francisco. That game will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO at 7:45pm.

The Cowboys are 5-5 and will play their next game Saturday at home against Wisconsin-Milwaukee. That game can also be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO Saturday at 1 o’clock.

The Denver Broncos will end their season at home Sunday afternoon against the Minnesota Vikings.

12/24/07 Sports for Monday

The Sheridan Hawks hockey team has got their momentum back after winning back-to-back state titles. The Hawks learned last season that nobody lays down for the defending champs, and their state title run ended early last season. Well, the Hawks appear to be back with more enthusiasm this year. In their last round of matches, they beat three opponents convincingly, including a 4-2 win over their big rival Cheyenne. The Hawks now have a few weeks away from competition. Coach Bob Viren expects practices to be spirited, as the Hawks get ready to make another run at a State Title in 2008.

The Sheridan Bronc wrestlers head into the break after four weeks of good results, including a 4-6 record in dual matches. This year’s addition of the Broncs is setting a foundation of good teams to come, with lots of under classmen. Coach Corey Hamrick’s varsity line-up has included 6 freshmen and only three seniors, with a good group of juniors and sophomore sprinkled in. Hamrick says the team accomplished a lot in the first month of the season. The Broncs get back into action January 8th with a dual at Buffalo.

The Sheridan Bronc basketball team is 0-7 as they prepare for the conference season to begin. Hard work and defense has been the hallmark of this year’s Bronc team, but they have struggled mightily to score. Coach Mike Ibach says that has to be their main focus during the break.

The Lady Broncs are 7-0 and still hold down the number one ranking in Class 4-A. The Broncs and Lady Broncs will get back into action January 4th and 5th with games against Evanston and Star Valley. The games will be played in Riverton at Central Wyoming CC.

The Broncs fall to 0-7 and will play their next game January 4th. Ibach says all they can do is look ahead and try to get better.

The Lady Broncs also played the Falcons last night, and ran their record to 7-0. After blowing out Skyview, the Lady Broncs had a 35-18 lead at half time, and went onto win the game 61-38.
