10/31/07 Sports for Wednesday
The Big Horn Rams will play their semi final game at home Saturday, while the NSI Wolves will travel to play Southeast. That game will be played in Torrington.
The Big Horn Rams fought through a tough Burns team last week, to earn the right to host Saturday’s 2-A semi final game. Head coach Bob St. John says having a game like that has helped the Rams in their preparation for Saratoga this week. One trouble spot for the Rams last week was special teams. Burns blocked three kicks; they blocked an extra point, a field goal, and a punt. St. John says they’ve addressed that this week.
The Rams and Panthers kickoff Saturday at 1 o’clock. The game will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The NSI Wolves will play Southeast in their semi final game Saturday in Torrington. The Wolves beat Burlington on the road in overtime in the quarterfinals last week. Head coach Ryan Oatts says it was a good bounce-back week after they were blown out the week before against Southeast, and winning the game in overtime was a big confidence boost for the players. The Wolves play Southeast in Torrington Saturday. Needless to say, they will be a heavy underdog. The Cyclones beat the Wolves two weeks ago 67-0. Last Friday, the Cyclones opened the playoffs, beating Upton 74-21.
In news from the Wyoming High School Activities Association as early as next season, we could see a neutral site for all five State Championship football games. The front runner as far a venue is War Memorial Stadium at the University of Wyoming. The Northeast District has already voted to recommend this option for next year. A final vote could come today at the association meeting in Casper. The format would have two championship games played on Friday and three games Saturday.
The new basketball season tips off tomorrow in Sheridan The Sheridan College Lady Generals are opening the season hosting a two day tournament. The first game tomorrow will be played at 5 o’clock, with Western Wyoming playing the Air Force Academy. The Lady Generals will play Eastern Wyoming at 7 o’clock. On Friday, Eastern will play Western at 5pm, and the Lady Generals will play the Academy at 7 o’clock.
The Generals open with three games at a tournament in Williston, North Dakota. They play Salish-Kootenai tomorrow afternoon; then the host team Williston Friday, and finish off the weekend against Lake Region North Dakota Saturday afternoon.
Both teams will play together during the Annual Sheridan Lions Club Thanksgiving Classic Tournament November 23rd and 24th. The Generals will also host their own tournament on December 7th and 8th.
The high school winter sports season opens Monday November 12th. That’s the first day of practice for basketball and wrestling.
The Wyoming Cowboys will play at San Diego State Saturday night. The game can be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO. The broadcast will begin at 6 o’clock, with kickoff at 7 pm.
The Denver Broncos will be on the road Sunday. They play at Detroit Sunday. Broadcast time is at 10am, with kickoff at 11 o’clock.

High school volleyball coaches have done their voting for All-State and All-Conference volleyball teams. Several players for our Sheridan County State Tournament teams made this year’s lists in Class 2-A. The State Champion Big Horn Lady Rams had three players named to the All-State team. They are Sammi Perkins, Winsome Williams, and Lauren Roberts. Tongue River Lady Eagle Kelly Horn was also named to the 2-A All-State team. The Lady Rams are on quite a roll; now it’s onto the basketball season. Coach Mike Daley returns every player from last year’s state runner-up team. He wants the players to rest up as they get ready to open camp November 12th.
The Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers had two players make the 1-A All-State list .They are Becky Holland and Morgan Mines.
The Sheridan Lady Broncs also had two players make the 4-A All-State team. They are seniors Erica Stander and Kati Malin. Joining Malin and Stender on the East All-Conference team was Katie Strandholm and Laura Quist. Stender was also named the East Conference Player of the Year, and head coach Wendy Rubi was named the East Conference Coach of the Year. The Lady Broncs had their most successful season - they went 27-8, won the East Conference and East Conference Tournament, fell in the semi finals at the State Tournament, and finished 4th.
The 2007-08 basketball season opens Thursday. The Sheridan College Lady Generals open at home, hosting a two day tournament in the Hoffman Dome. There will be two games Thursday night at 5 o’clock: Western Wyoming plays the Air Force Academy, and the Lady Generals play at 7 o’clock against Eastern Wyoming. The Lady Lancers are back in the Wyoming League for the first time after a 15 year absence.. Friday’s games will have Eastern playing Western at 5pm, then the Lady Generals play the Academy at 7 o’clock.
The Generals open at a three game tournament Thursday in Williston, North Dakota. They face the Salish-Kootenai team from Montana Thursday, the host team Friday, and Lake Region North Dakota Saturday. Davidson says there are putting on the finishing touches in practice this week, and they have high expectations for this season, but everyone will be nervous Thursday. The first chance to see the Generals at home will be during the Annual Sheridan Lions Club Tournament Thanksgiving weekend. They also host a two-day tournament December 7th and 8th.

The Denver Broncos got a last-second field goal from Jason Elam to force overtime against the Green Bay Packers last night, but Brett Farve opened the overtime period with an 82 yard touchdown pass, and the pack beat the Broncos 19-13. The Broncos will play at Detroit Sunday.

World Series ended Sunday night with another Rockies loss to the Boston Red Sox. The score was 4-3.
The Big Horn Lady Rams celebrated a State Volleyball Championship Saturday night in Casper, beating Mountain View in three straight games. Lady Rams coach Mike Daley says it was a thrill for the players. In all, the Lady Rams played three matches and lost only one game during the tournament. Daley says it wasn’t easy for the players as the team battled through injuries all season, and they played really good volleyball the entire tournament. It’s been a good two year run for the Lady Rams: they finished 2nd in volleyball in 2006 and won it this year. Now basketball season is coming; they lost the title to Tongue River in the State Title game last spring, and Daley gets all those players back this year to make a run at another championship.
In other State Tournament action, the Tongue River Lady Eagles went two and two at the tournament. Their tournament ended in the consolation bracket, with a loss to Sundance in the consolation semi-final.
The Arvada / Clearmont Lady Panthers run at the Class 1-A title derailed in the semi finals, as they fell into the consolation bracket and saw their season end in the consolation semi finals, with a loss to Kaycee.
The Sheridan Lady Broncs’ run at the 4-A title ended Friday night with a loss in the semi finals to Natrona County. They went through the consolation bracket and made it to the 3rd and 4th place match, only to fall against Evanston in four games.
The Big Horn Rams and NSI Wolves advanced into the next round of the high school football playoffs. The Rams scored two big touchdowns in the 4th quarter to beat Burns 15-7. The Rams led 3-0, heading into the fourth quarter. Burns put a scare into the Rams when they took the lead 7-3, but the Rams came back on their next drive and took the lead back, then scored an insurance touchdown late to finish off the Broncs. Rams head coach Bob St. John says it was a great football game, and when they fell behind they remained calm and got it done. The Rams will host Saratoga in the semi finals Saturday afternoon.
The NSI Wolves beat Burlington in overtime to advance to the Class 1-A semi finals. The Wolves scored a 24-18 win. The Wolves now head to the semi finals. They’ll play at southeast Saturday. It will be tough for the Wolves. The Cyclones beat NSI 67-0 in the final game of the regular season.
The Tongue River Eagles and Saratoga Panthers met in Saratoga Friday in a first round playoff game.
The Sheridan Lady Bronc swimmers and divers wrapped up their season over the weekend at the Class 4-A State Championships. The Lady Broncs finished 6th. Mandy Forsiter and Hattie Oatts both earned all state honors in two events. Forister won the 100 butterfly and was 2nd in the 50 free. Oatts was 2nd in the 100 backstroke and 3rd in the 100 freestyle. The Lady Broncs also picked up points with 4th place finishes in the 400 freestyle relay and 200 medley relay.
The Wyoming Cowboys played UNLV Saturday. The Pokes cam from behind to beat the Rebels 29-24. This week, the Pokes play at San Diego State. Kickoff is Saturday night at 7 o’clock.

The State Volleyball Tournament opened in Casper yesterday. Three of the four Sheridan County teams all advanced to the semi finals. The Sheridan Lady Broncs beat Star Valley in three games. They face Casper Natrona in the 4-A semi finals at 4:30.
The Big Horn Lady Rams beat Wyoming Indian in three games, and advance to face Thermopolis in the semi finals. The Tongue River Lady Eagles lost against Thermopolis in five games. They play Wyoming Indian in the consolation bracket.
In the Class 1-A bracket yesterday, Arvada/Clearmont beat Farson in three games. They play Cokeville in the semi finals today.
The Class 4-A Swimming and Diving Championships open this afternoon in Gillette. 10 Lady Broncs will be competing. Coach Larry White says it’s all about focus now. As far as where they might end up this weekend, White says they have their sights set on a top three finish. White says a top three finish would be outstanding, considering how tough the field is this fall. The prelims start this afternoon.
The high school football playoffs open this afternoon. We will have two games for you live with Big Horn hosting Burns; and Tongue River, playing at the Saratoga Eagles. Coach Chuck Walters says they are facing a pretty good opponent today. The key for the Eagles today is no turnovers. The game kicks off at 2 o’clock and can be heard live on 105.5 FM and 104.9FM ESPN HD Channel #3.
The Big Horn Rams will be looking to avenge a loss today when they host the Burns Broncs. A year ago this week, Burns ended the Rams season 27-13 in Burns. Today, the Rams look to return the favor. The Colorado Rockies and Boston Red Sox opened up the 2007 World Series at Fenway Park last night. The Sox came out swinging, and blew out Colorado 13-1. Boston scored three runs in the first inning and kept rolling, building up a 6-1 lead, then scoring seven in the 5th inning to put it away. The Sox had nine extra base hits, and banged out 17 in total. Game two is tonight. Broadcast time is at 6 o’clock, and you can hear it live on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The NSI Wolves open the Class 1-A playoffs tomorrow afternoon at Burlington. The Wolves are 5-3 going into the game. Head coach Ryan Oatts says they will be the underdog heading into the playoffs, and that’s a role they’re used to. Oatts alsosays making the late season run to get into the playoffs means a lot to the players, and that activities at NSI are a big part of their program and means a lot to all the students. The Wolves open at Burlington tomorrow afternoon.

The State Volleyball Tournament opens this afternoon in Casper. The Big Horn Lady Rams and Sheridan Lady Broncs play at 3 o’clock, the Tongue River Lady Eagles play at 4:40, and the A/C Lady Panthers play at 6 o’clock.
The Sheridan College Lady Generals volleyball team will play their final home match of the season tonight in the Hoffman Dome. The Lady Generals host Miles City, Montana. Match time is set for 7 o’clock. Head coach Todd Cooper says it would be nice for his players to get a good crowd for their final home match.
The Lady Generals will end their regular season next Tuesday with a match at Rocky Mountain College in Billings. Their regional nine tournament opens November 1st in Rock Springs.

Registration is open for the up-coming season at the Sheridan Ice Rink. They will take registration for all programs from 3pm to 6pm today and tomorrow. Sign-ups will be taken for all programs including all youth and adult hockey, plus curling and more. The Sheridan Ice Rink is scheduled to open sometime in November weather permitting.
The Wyoming Cowboys host UNLV Saturday in Laramie. Kickoff is set for noon on AM 14-10 KWYO, and Monday night the Denver Broncos host the Green Bay Packers. Broadcast time will be at 5:30 also on KWYO.

The Tongue River Eagles open the Class 2-A playoffs at Saratoga Friday afternoon. The only common opponent between the two is Lusk. Saratoga lost at Lusk 24-6 in week four. The Eagles beat Lusk in Dayton last Friday 13-12. The Eagles played well after dropping the first two games of the season and went 5-1 the rest of the way, with the other loss at Big Horn two weeks ago. Eagles head coach Chuck Walters says they are feeling good heading into the post season, and they would rather have a home game, but are in the playoffs and still have to win three more games. The game kicks-off at 2 o’clock and will be broadcast live on 105.5FM.
The Big Horn Rams have the best record heading into the playoffs. They host the Burns Broncs Friday. Burns knocked the Rams out of the playoffs a year ago. The only common opponent between the two schools is Sundance, and both teams lost against the Bulldogs. The Rams lost 33-24 back in week two, and Burns lost at home against Sundance last week 21-0. Now to the game: Rams head coach Bob St. John says the Rams had a great season, to set the stage for this playoff run. And as far as their preparation this week, St. John says they will add some new wrinkles but they still must do the things that got them to 7-1, and the players are playoff tough. The Swimming and Diving Championships could have a new venue this week. The meet is scheduled to get underway Friday in Gillette, but the Gillette facility needs some repairs. Sheridan coach Larry White says there is a possibility the State Meet could be moved to Riverton. State Officials are expected to make a decision sometime today.
The Lady Broncs are coming off a 2nd place finish in the Conference Meet and now are looking for a top three finish in the State Meet. Head Coach Larry white says having two weeks off for the girls to recover and get ready for the State Meet has everyone in a much better frame of mind. White says all the physical stuff is done, and in these last few days, they are working on getting each Lady Bronc mentally focused on their events. And with 10 girls making the trip to the State Meet, White says the Lady Broncs expect to do well. The 4-A State Championships begin with prelims Friday afternoon in either Gillette or Riverton.

Eight and half million hits crashed the Colorado Rockies World Series ticket server yesterday. Only a handful of people were able to obtain tickets for games 3,4 and 5 of the World Series at Coors Field. Last night, Rockies officials assured the problems were fixed, and tickets will go back on sale at noon today. Again, go on-line at www.coloradorockies.com . The Denver Broncos are 3-3 after beating Pittsburgh Sunday night. All three Bronco wins have come with Jason Elam kicking a game-winning field goal on the final play of each game. The Broncos host the Green Bay Packers on Monday night football. Game five of the World Series is also scheduled for Coors Field Monday night, presenting a nightmare for Denver city officials. With two major sporting events going on at the same time, the NFL has said that if there is a game five, the football game would be moved up a half hour to kickoff at 6 o’clock Monday night.

The Sheridan Bronc football team will not be joining the football post season party, but the Big Horn Rams, Tongue River Eagles and NSI Wolves all have their tickets punched for a shot at a State Title. The Broncs led 10-0 at halftime in Gillette Friday night but couldn’t keep the momentum going, and the Camels got their running game going late in the third quarter, winning 21-10 and ending the Broncs’ season. Even though the Broncs missed the playoffs, it was a good comeback from a year ago; the team came a long way in 12 months to finish the season 5-4 overall.
The Big Horn Rams end their season 7-1 and hold the top record in Class 2-A. The Rams will host the Burns. Broncs in a first round playoff game Friday afternoon.
The Tongue River Eagles finished strong, beating Lusk 13-12 Friday. The Eagles travel for their first round playoff game at Saratoga Friday.
The NSI Wolves lost their final regular season game 67-0 against the number one Class 1-A team, Southeast. The Wolves will open the 1-A playoff tournament at Burlington Friday.
The State Volleyball Tournament will include all of our Sheridan County teams. The Sheridan Lady Broncs finished off the East 4-A Regional by winning the title in three games over Riverton. The Lady Broncs open the State Tournament Thursday afternoon against Star Valley.

The Tongue River Lady Eagles made a nice run at the East Regional, finishing third and beating Pine Bluffs in the consolation bracket final in 5 games. The Lady Eagles open the State Tournament Thursday afternoon against Thermopolis.
The Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers finished 2nd in their east regional final. They open the State Tournament Thursday evening against Farson. The State Championships will be played at the Casper Events Center.
The State Cross Country Championships were run in Douglas Saturday. The Lady Broncs were 5th; the Broncs were 6th. Coach Art Bauers says it was a solid finish for both teams, and all in all, it was a really good season for Sheridan High School cross country.

Get your fingers limbered up, as World Series tickets go on sale this morning at 10 o’clock. All tickets will be sold on-line at www.coloradorockies.com for games three, four, and five. There are 20,000 tickets up for grabs; first come first served. Game three is set for Saturday night in Denver. The first two games will be played at Fenway Park in Boston. Last night, the Red Sox blew out Cleveland in game 7, Games one and two will be Wednesday and Thursday night. Game times will be at 6 o’clock. Both games will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO. Air times will be at 5:30.
The Wyoming Cowboys offense was brutal for the second week in a row, as they lost 20-12 at Air Force. The Pokes will try and stop the bleeding, hosting UNLV Saturday afternoon.
The Denver Broncs broke their three-game losing streak yesterday, beating Pittsburgh 31-28. This week, the Broncs will play at home against the Green Bay Packers.

The Sheridan Broncs face a playoff game of sorts tonight in Gillette. A win will put the Bronc into the post season, and a loss almost eliminates them from the post season tournament
It’s been quite a year for the Broncs, getting a new coaching staff and a rash of injuries, but they players have hung in there and are 5-3 as they head into this final game. Broncs head Coach Don Julian says it’s a good sign when it seems like the season rolls by too fast. The Broncs must win tonight to get into the playoffs, even though the team in front of them - Rock Springs - has only four wins, but Julian says the power ranking system is what we have now, and the Broncs know they must win tonight. The game can be heard live tonight on AM 14-10 KWYO. The First Federal Pre-Game Show starts us off at 6:30, with kickoff at 7 o’clock.
The Big Horn Rams know they will host a playoff game next week. Today, the Rams look to wrap up the conference title when they host Wind River this afternoon at 1 o’clock.
The Tongue River Eagles will be part of the Class 2-A playoff field next week. The Eagles currently are the 8th seed, and will host Lusk this afternoon. Kickoff is at 2 o’clock, and you can hear that game live on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The NSI Wolves also know they will be in the 1-A playoffs next week. They still have a chance to host a first round game, but must beat Southeast tonight out at NSI. Kickoff is set for 7 o’clock.

The NSI Wolves are 5-2 overall after picking up a win this week through a forfeit from Shoshoni. Shoshoni was ordered to forfeit three games after they were found to have used an ineligible player; so the Wolves benefit and are now in line for a home playoff game as they end the regular season at home tomorrow night against top ranked Southeast. The Wolves are on a four game winning streak. Head Coach Ryan Oatts is proud of the players, as they have turned their season around. Oatts says it took a few weeks, but the team has just been better each week. The Wolves are the only show in town Friday night, with Big Horn and Tongue River playing in the afternoon, and the Broncs on the road. The game kicks-off at 7 o’clock.

The Sheridan College basketball, volleyball and rodeo teams hosted a fan fun night at the Hoffman Dome last night. Sheridan College and Coach Joel Davidson says they had a lot of fun, and they don’t get many chances to get all the teams together. The Generals are less than two weeks away from opening the season. Davidson says it’s gone pretty typical the last couple of weeks.. The Lady Generals will open their season November first, hosting a tournament. Coach Frank Mcarthy says the players are progressing well.
The Sheridan College volleyball team has four straight matches on the road starting tonight in Rock Springs; then it at Eastern Wyoming in Torrngton tomorrow; then at Laramie County Saturday. The Lady Generals will play their final home game a week from tonight against Miles City, Montana.
High school volleyball regional tournaments open tomorrow. Big Horn and Tongue River open their tournament in Gillette. The Lady Rams play at 2 o’clock against Guernsey, while Tongue River will go at 4 o’clock against Lingle.
The Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers open their regional in Torrington tomorrow at 1 o’clock against Chugwater.
The Sheridan Lady Broncs open their regional Saturday morning after receiving a bye into the semi finals. Their match will start at 10am at Cheyenne East High School.
The state cross country championships run in Douglas on Saturday. The Broncs and Lady Broncs are expected to compete for a top three finish.
The Wyoming football Cowboys play at the Air Force Academy Saturday at noon. The game can be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO.

The NSI Wolves, Tongue River Eagles, and Big Horn Rams are all in the football post season. The Sheridan Broncs need a win at Gillette to get in. The Wolves are currently seeded 2nd in the Powder Rankings, and would host in the first round. They play at home against Southeast Friday. The Big Horn Rams are set to host a first round game on the 26th with an opponent to be determined following play Friday. The Tongue River Eagles will be the 8th seed and would travel in the first round.
The Sheridan Broncs are in the hunt for the 5-A’s last spot. Sheridan, Rock Springs, and Gillette are the teams that have to fight it out this week for the final two playoff selections, so the Broncs need a win in Gillette Friday night. Head Coach Don Julian says it’s amazing that this final game has come down to Sheridan vs. Gillette. The Broncs will be as close to full strength as they’ve been in several weeks, when they face the Camels Friday night, and Julian says this is a great opportunity for the team, school, and community to join together to help the Broncs bring home a win by being in the Razor City for the game Friday night. Kickoff is at 7 o’clock Friday night and can be heard live on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The volleyball region match-ups are set. The Sheridan Lady Broncs got a first round bye in their tournament, and will play a semi final match Saturday morning at 10 o’clock .The 4-A East Regional will be played at East High School in Cheyenne.
At the 2-A East Regional in Gillette, the Big Horn Lady Rams play Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock against Guernsey, while the Tongue River Lady Eagles will play at 4 o’clock against Lingle.
The 1-A Regional has the Arvada/Clearmont Lady Panthers playing a first round match with Chugwater at 1 o’clock Friday afternoon. The All-Class State Volleyball Championships open next Thursday at the Casper Events Center.
The high school cross country season ends in Douglas Saturday at the All-Class State Meet. The Sheridan Lady Bronc swimmers and divers have this week off as they get ready for the State Meet next weekend in Gillette. 4-A prelims open on Friday afternoon, October 26th.
Tonight the Sheridan College athletic department is hosting a great night for kids and fans, as all four sports programs host “Meet the Generals Night” at the Hoffman Dome. The basketball teams, volleyball team, and rodeo team will all be participating in this fun evening. The players will be giving demonstrations, including a dunk contest and three-point shooting contest. The volleyball team and the rodeo team will also have activities for kids to participate in. All the fun starts tonight at 6:30 in the Hoffman Dome.

The Colorado Rockies have only lost one game since September 16th. Last night, they took their 7th straight post season win and are headed to the World Series. The Rockies closed out the Arizona Diamondbacks to win the National League Pennant. Matt Holiday blew the game open with a three run homer in the 4th inning to put the Rocks up 6-1, and they cruised from there to win it 6-4. Holiday was named the NLCS MVP. The Rockies head to the Fall Classic, set to begin in the American League Champs Ball Park next Wednesday. The Rockies winning streak has reached nine-in-a-row, and they’ve won 21 of their last 22 games.
On the local sports from this week, high school volleyball regional tournaments begin Friday. The Lady Broncs took their regular season conference title, and got an automatic bid into the State Tournament. They open the East Regional at Cheyenne East High School Saturday morning at 10 o’clock.
The Big Horn Lady Rams are a one seed at their regional tournament. They open Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock against Guernsey. The Tongue River Lady Eagles beat Moorcroft in a play-in game last night, in three straight games to get into the regional. They open Friday afternoon at 4 o’clock. The 2-A East Regional is being played in Gillette.
In other volleyball action this week, the regular season continues for the Sheridan College Lady Generals. They open a stretch of four straight conference road matches at Western Wyoming and Eastern Wyoming, Thursday and Friday. The Lady Generals have one home match left in their regular season. That will be against Miles City, Montana next Thursday. Their regional will be played in Rock Springs starting November 1st.
In other post season action this week, the Sheridan High School cross country teams run in the State Cross Country Championships Saturday in Douglas. Both teams are coming off their best meets of the season last Friday, at their regional meet. Coach Art Bauers says that success has carried them into their preparation for the State Meet.. Lela Carpenter has been the Lady Broncs’ leader all season and led the Lady Broncs to a 3rd place finish. Senior Ryan Sorenson has been the Broncs’ top runner all year, as well. Sorenson and the Broncs are rolling into the State Meet; they have just four more days of preparations for their final race. Bauers says their recent success will make this week a lot easier.
In local football action this week,: in Class 1-A action, the NSI Wolves have made the playoffs. Their four game winning streak has put them in second place in the state wide standings, and in the running for a home playoff game. They end the regular season Friday at home against Southeast.
The Tongue River Eagles, as of today, sit in the final playoff spot in Class 2-A. It looks like the Eagles must beat Lusk Friday in Dayton to get into the post season. That game kicks-off at 2 o’clock, and will be broadcast on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The Big Horn Rams are in line to host a first round playoff game. They have the best record in Class 2-A at 6-1. The Rams host Wind River Friday afternoon to close out the regular season. The chances are excellent the Rams will host an opening round game in the playoffs on Friday, October 26th.
As for the Sheridan Broncs, their future is in their hands. The Broncs sit in the eighth and final playoff spot, with one game to play - meaning they must win at Gillette Friday night to get into the post season. The Camels are the only team that can keep the Broncs out of the playoffs. The game kicks off Friday night at 7 o’clock, and will be broadcast live on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The Wyoming Cowboys play at the Air Force Academy Saturday afternoon. The Pokes are coming off a bad home loss against New Mexico. Kickoff is at noon Saturday on AM 14-10 KWYO.
The Denver Broncos’ season is on the brink of going completely south. They are coming off their bye week, and play at home Sunday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Broncos are 3-2, and have lost three straight. Air-time Sunday night is at 5 o’clock live on KWYO.

The Sheridan Lady Bronc volleyball team swept six games from the Cheyenne schools and wrapped up the number one seed heading into this weekend’s Regional Tournament. The regional will be played at Cheyenne East High School and with the 4-A regional format, the Lady Broncs get a first round bye and an automatic bid into the State Tournament. They open the regional Saturday afternoon at 1 o’clock. The State Tournament starts on Thursday, October 25th in the Casper Events Center.
The Big Horn Lady Rams swept Sundance and Wright to end their regular season and roll into the post season as the number one ranked team in Class 2-A. The Tongue River Lady Eagles split their weekend matches with Wright and Sundance. They’ll join the Lady Rams at their regional tournament in Gillette Friday and Saturday. The top four teams in the super regional make it to the State Tournament. The Arvada / Clearmont Lady Panthers are rolling as well, in Class 1-A. The Lady Panthers are ranked 2nd in the class heading into their regional in Gillette.
In cross country action, teams will prepare this week for the State Championships, which will be run in Douglas Saturday at the East Regional in Gillette. The Lady Broncs finished 3rd, and the Broncs were 4th. Coach Art Bauers says all their runners had a great day last Friday.
The Sheridan Lady Bronc swimmers and divers finished 2nd in the North Regional in Casper over the weekend. They have this week off to get ready for the State Meet in Gillette. The State Championships open on Friday, October 26th.
In football action Friday, the old Thunder Bowl lived up to it’s billing this year, with Big Horn knocking off Tongue River in a great game 29-20. The Rams got off early and went out to a 14-0 lead the Eagles then caught their stride and roared back the rams had a 21-20 lead at the half. The second half saw some hard hitting action with the Rams breaking through for the only score in the 2nd half to put the game away late in the 3rd quarter. Rams quarterback Matt Metzger says it was a great game to play in. Rmas head coach Bob St. John says the competition on the field was great to see. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they just couldn’t quite keep their momentum going. This week, the regular season ends with Big Horn hosting Wind River, and the Eagles finish at home against Lusk.
The Sheridan Broncs ran into a tough football team Friday night. Natrona County really has things going their way, now that the Mustangs built up a 34-6 lead in the second half, but the Broncs wouldn’t lie down, and out-scored NC in the second half. But the big lead was too much to overcome, and Natrona took the game 34-20. The Broncs post season hopes will come down to one final game at Gillette Friday night. A win puts them in the playoffs; a loss means they need some help to get in the post season tournament.
The NSI Wolves are one of the hottest teams going right now in Class 1-A football. The Wolves opened the season 0-3, but now have won four in-a -row after Friday’s 28-20 win at Wyoming Indian. The Wolves’ push to the playoffs continues this week. They host Southeast Friday night.
The Wyoming Cowboys offense was not very good Saturday, as they took a bad home loss to New Mexico. The Lobos had momentum all day, and took the game 20-3. The Pokes will play another conference game this week at the Air Force Academy.
The historic run by the Colorado Rockies continues as they took game three of the NLCS last night, by the score of 4-1 against Arizona. The teams battled through cold and rain in Denver last night The Rocks got a solo home run from Matt Holiday to take the lead with Arizona, then tying it up. The winning runs came in the 6th inning. Rockies catcher Yorvit Torrealba hit a three-run jack for the winning runs. The Rockies have won six straight playoffs games, and 20 of their last 21, and can wrap up the National League pennant with a win tonight in game four at Coors Field. The American League Championship Series continues this evening as the series shifts to Cleveland, with Boston and the Indians tied at one game apiece.

With two games to play in the regular season, the Big Horn Rams lead their conference with no losses. The Tongue River Eagles and Riverside Rebels are right behind, with one loss this afternoon. The Rams put the conference lead and their number one Class 2-A ranking on the line when they host the Tongue River Eagles. Both teams are riding four game-winning streaks and they know each other very well, so it should be a good game. Rams coach Bob St. John says the Eagles have a balanced attack, and the Rams defense is going to have to have a good day. Kick-off this afternoon is at 1 o’clock. The Sheridan Broncs and Natrona County Mustangs both have the same records at 5-2 overall, but the Mustangs have no losses in conference play and are coming off an impressive win over last week’s number one Cheyenne East. The Mustangs are really playing well right now, while the Broncs are just trying to get healed up from a rash of injuries over the last few weeks. Broncos coach Don Julian says the Mustangs stumbled out of the gate, but are rolling now.
The Bronc coaching staff is using the underdog mantra this week to get the Broncs ready; and to be in the game tonight, the Broncs need to stand up to the Mustangs. We have more today on Sheridan High School cross country and swimming and diving, as the Broncs and Lady Broncs open their regionals tomorrow. The cross country teams run in Gillette. Coach Art Bauers says both teams have high expectations.
The Lady Bronc swimmers and divers open their regionals in Casper tomorrow. Seven Lady Broncs have already qualified for the State Championships in two weeks, but coach Larry White says they have a few non-qualifiers that are close to getting in.
In volleyball action this week, the Big Horn Lady Rams host a match tonight with Tongue River. The varsity match is scheduled to get underway at 7:30. The Lady Eagles end the regular season at Wright tomorrow, and at home against Riverside Saturday. The Lady Rams will play Sundance at home tomorrow, and wrap it up at Wright Saturday.
The Sheridan Lady Broncs have a chance to wrap up an automatic State Tournament bid, if they can beat Cheyenne East at Sheridan High School tomorrow night. The varsity match is scheduled for 6 o’clock on Saturday afternoon. They host Cheyenne Central at 1 o’clock.
In football action, the Tongue River Eagles play the Big Horn Rams in Big Horn tomorrow afternoon. Head Coach Chuck Walters says forget about the rivalry, this is a big game for both teams, with playoff position on the line. And the Eagles have been on a nice little run lately. They been in the winning column for four straight weeks. And Walters says both teams know each other so well, the game tomorrow really comes down to the team that executes its game plan better. The Sheridan Broncs can make a big move in their hunt for a home playoff game with a victory tomorrow night against Natrona County. The Mustangs come into the game as the number one ranked 5-A team, after blasting previous number one Cheyenne East last week. The Mustangs took two early season losses, but since then they’ve been on a roll and the Broncs know they will have their hands full tomorrow night. We will have the game live on AM 14-10 KWYO. The community tailgate party for Sheridan High School homecoming will start in front of the school at 4:30, before the Lady Broncs’ volleyball game. Then, it will move up to Homer Scott Stadium at 6 o’clock for the football game. They’ll be serving burgers and Bronc dogs. The cost is $3 per person. All proceeds go the SHS Booster Club and the FFA students.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc cross country runners will be in Gillette Friday for their regional meet. Coach Art Bauers says they aren’t doing much different in their preparation for this event. Most of the top 4-A teams compete in the North Conference. Bauers says the Sheridan runners will get a great tune-up Friday for next week’s State Championships. The State Cross Country Championships will be hosted by Douglas Saturday, October 20th.
The Lady Bronc swimmers and divers will be in Casper this weekend for their north regionals. The Lady Broncs are coming off a good regular season. Coach Larry White says the team got a good infusion of underclassmen talent this fall, and the team is getting some good rest this week as they get ready to make a run in the post season. The Lady Broncs will have next week off, and then head to the State Swimming and Diving Championships in Gillette October 26th and 27th.
The Sheridan Lady Broncs have a chance to wrap up a State Tournament bid this week when they host the Cheyenne schools in their final conference matches of the season.
