The State American Legion Baseball Tournament ended Saturday night the same way it’s ended for the last seven years, with Cheyenne Post #6 as the champion. Post #6 won a great game against Gillette 11-8, to take their 7th consecutive championship. They now advance to play at the Northwest Regional Tournament in Lewiston, Idaho, which begins Thursday.

The Sheridan Troopers went two and two in the tournament, and played a great deal of baseball when they got knocked out Friday night. The Troopers beat Laramie in 13 innings, in 95 plus degree heat, and had to come right back and play Casper. The Oilers were well rested, and eliminated the Troopers. Kyle Warnke was proud that the players played 20 innings without any rest.

The crowds were great for the tournament. Tournament Director Dan Bilyue was pleased with the entire week, and says the Sheridan community can be proud of the way the Troopers conducted themselves in the tournament.

As for the winners, Cheyenne manager Tagg Laine says comparing any of the seven championship teams is tough, and that the pressure of winning seven in a row rests mostly with the coaches. Post #6 will open the Northwest Regional Thursday in Lewiston, Idaho. Last year, they made it all the way to the title game at the regional. You’ll be able to follow Cheyenne’s progress through the tournament by going to the American Legion web site, www.baseball.legion.org  .

08/10/08 Sports for Friday

The Sheridan Troopers were 0-6 on the season in games against Gillette last night. The two met in the State Tournament winner’s bracket. Gillette brought out the heavy lumber, and built an early 6-0 lead, and then went onto win the game 11-1, sending the Troops to the loser’s bracket. Gillette short-stop Zach Hamilton hit a 3-run homer for Gillette in the first inning, and added a solo shot in the third. Then first basemen Drew Baier took over, hitting a 2-run homer and a solo shot of his own. The Roughriders led 6-0 after three innings, and the Trooper bats just couldn’t answer. Coach Kyle Warnke says Gillette got off so quick at the plate. That quick start made it tough on the Troops to mount any kind of a comeback. The Troopers will now play Laramie this afternoon at 1 o’clock in an elimination game.

The other quarter final game yesterday had Casper taking on the defending state champs Post #6 from Cheyenne. Cheyenne got off early on Casper, building up an 8-0 lead and won the game 16-4. Today’s State Tournament schedule has four games. The first game at 10 o’clock will have Casper taking on Torrington, then the Troopers play Laramie at 1pm. The winners of those games will play at 4 o’clock, and the championship bracket semi-final between Cheyenne and Gillette will be played at 7 o’clock.

Saturday there will be an elimination game at 1 o’clock, with the title game set for 7 o’clock Saturday night, with an “if necessary” game to be played Sunday afternoon.

Video of Sheridan Troopers vs.Torrington in the 1st Round Trooopers AA

The Sheridan Troopers opened up the State American Legion Baseball Tournament last night by knocking off Torrington in a wild and zany back and forth battle. Torrington scored a run in the third inning, but the Troops came right back and scored in the bottom of the inning to tie it up. Torrington went back up 2-1 in the 5th inning. It stayed 2-1 until the 7th, when the Troops scored twice to take a 3-2 lead. Torrington came back in the 8th and scored two, to take a 4-3 lead. Then the roof fell in on the Tigers as the Troopers sent 11 batters to the plate. In the bottom of the 8th inning they scored 8 runs, and went onto to win the game 11-4. Coach Kyle Warnke says it was a great way to open up the State Tournament, and that after scoring eight runs in that 8th inning, they were able to get base runners on and put pressure on the Torrington defense.
