07/18/07 Sports for Wednesday The Sheridan Troopers were all ready to host the Casper Oilers last night. The umpires were ready, the radio guys were ready, and the fans were anticipating a nice night of baseball at Thorne-Rider Stadium. The only problem - the Oilers no-showed, as has become typical with the Casper baseball arrogance. As it became evident that the Oilers were not in Sheridan, American Legion baseball officials in Sheridan were able to contact Oilers coach Orion Jones. His explanation was they didn’t know they were scheduled to be in Sheridan, and the games were not on their schedule. That explanation was embarrassing to anyone with any common sense, since schedules are set during a meeting in December, when all the teams show up to schedule for the next season - and the conference games are the first games scheduled. So basically, the Oilers thumbed their nose at the Troopers and Sheridan last night, and I’m sure the Troopers, coaches and fans can’t wait to give the Oilers a proper greeting when - or should I say if - they show up for the State Tournament, which begins in Sheridan August 8th. And by the way, both games will go to the Troopers. American Legion baseball state commander Paul Eastridge of Casper gave the go ahead last night to make sure the Oilers forfeit both games. Last season, the Oilers also tried to pull a fast one with the Troopers, but those games were played. The problem for years has been the lack of control in the leadership of the Casper American Legion program. We do know that the Troopers will play home games Friday and Saturday, as they host the six time Wyoming State Champion Post #6 from Cheyenne. They will honor their obligation to play at Thorne-Rider Stadium, because Post #6 is a class operation. The Troopers host a double header Friday night with Cheyenne at 5 o’clock, and a single nine inning game Saturday at 1 o’clock. Next Tuesday, it’s back to conference action, hosting two with Gillette at 5 pm. That will also be our next live broadcast of Trooper baseball on AM 14-10 KWYO.
