The Sheridan High School basketball teams will host the Annual Holiday Youth Hoop Camp next week as part of their holiday break preparation for the rest of the season. Broncs coach Mike Ibach has the Broncs on a roll for the first time in many seasons. The Broncs are over the .500 mark for the first time since Ibach took over three years ago. Broncs seniors Tyler Wells, Jimmy Burgess, Bernie Bornong, Tim Thomas, Robby Burnaugh and Tim James were on the losing side quite as bit when they were sophomores and juniors. That leadership has helped the Broncs to a 5-4 record. They’ve won four of their last five, and three of those losses were four points or less, including an overtime loss to open the season. Ibach says stringing a few wins together has been a long process. The Broncs will now take a few days off to regroup before reusing their practice schedule next week. The first nine games have been tough, and as they begin 2007, the first three games will go a long way to tell what kind of season the Broncs might have. They play three really tough road games starting January 5th and 6th  at Cheyenne East and Central, and also at Billings West.

The Lady Broncs are in their usual position. They have started strong with only one loss, and that was at Natrona County by three points. They stand at 6-1 overall. They come back after the break with two home games against the Cheyenne schools and a road game at Laramie, then come home for a game with Billings West.

The Bison had one final shot, but came up empty, and the Broncs are 5-4 as they head into the holiday break. It was another close game for the Broncs. The Broncs basketball team picked up a road-win at Worland last night. The Broncs led almost the entire game. Worland ran off ten straight points, to end the first half and tie the game at 24 apiece. But the Broncs had a strong 3rd quarter: As the game turned in the ‘Bernie Bornong Show’, they took the lead back and went onto win the game 59-46. The Bronc defense really put pressure on the Warriors. They only scored 22 points in the second half. Bernie Bornong hit for a game-high 24 points, including 13 in the third quarter, that put the game out of reach. Bernie says his teammates did a good job of getting him the ball when he got hot in the second half. Broncs coach Mike Ibach says it was a game they knew they should win, and Bernie came up big when they needed it. The Broncs are 2-3 overall and will play three games this week at the Flaming Gorge Classic in Green River. 12/12/06 Sports for Tuesday

Reports surfaced Friday evening that Sheridan Bronc football coach Tim Leroy had been fired. Sources also reported to me that Leroy would resign and that it would be a forced resignation. Leroy made it official yesterday morning as classes opened  at Sheridan High School that he would no longer be the Bronc football coach, by turning in a letter of resignation to high school principle Darlene Wheeler. I caught up with Leroy just a couple of hours after that. He’s said he just resigned the position of head coach. I also asked Wheeler about my sources reporting that Leroy was forced out by parental complaints of the head coach. Regardless of what the story really is, Leroy is out, and now a search will begin for the next head coach to lead the Bronc program.

Leroy started at Sheridan High School in 2004. He took the Broncs to the 5-A Consolation Playoff Title Game, which they won against Cheyenne East in 2005. This past season he took the Broncs to the 5-A playoffs. They were eliminated in the first round both times. This past November, they were knocked out of the playoffs by the eventual State Champs from Gillette.  Leroy also stated that he and his family would be staying in Sheridan.

The Sheridan Bronc basketball team is 1-3 as they head into a game at Worland tonight. The Broncs have just missed winning those three games they lost. Head coach Mike Ibach says they’ve played well enough to be 4-0, but need to learn to finish games. We will broadcast tonight’s game live on AM 14-10. Tip-off was scheduled for 7:30, but the tip has been moved up to 7 o’clock. Following tonight’s game, the Broncs will join the Lady Broncs, playing at the Flaming Gorge Classic Tournament in Green River. The tournament opens Thursday.
