The Sheridan Hawks have won two-straight State Hockey Championships, and in a couple of weeks you’ll have a chance to see the Hawks play at home. They’ll host four other teams for League play, December 16th and 17th. Since the NHL cancelled its season in 2005, the League came back this year and instituted rules changes designed to open up the game and make it more fan-friendly. Junior hockey throughout the country has adopted the same rule changes. Hawks coach Bob Viren says it took some getting used to for the players. But Viren says after a few weeks of play, the changes are getting better reviews from players and coaches. The Hawks have played a few pre-season games, the season opens for real in Sheridan on the 16th and 17th. Admission to all Sheridan games is free - just make sure you dress for the temperature.

The Montana Winter Pistol League has begun another season. Sheridan County has a group of nine marksmen currently competing. Mike Kuzara heads up the local group of shooters who compete annually in the League. Sheridan is the only club from Wyoming that competes in the Montana League, which also boasts a team from Alberta, Canada. Scores are kept locally and sent in to the League’s office to be tabulated. The local group shoots Wednesday evenings 7 o’clock at the indoor range at the Sportsman’s Association on Soldier Creek. Kuzara says the number-one rule with this sport is safety. This is a great group of guys, and they invite anyone who may be interested to stop by tomorrow night to find out more information. Amendment “B” on today’s ballot would correct inequities in the State School Finance System. The current provision benefited wealthier districts such as Campbell County. Amendment “B,” if passed, would take those Districts’ extra money from property tax revenue and put it into a School Foundation Fund, so each district would have the same educational opportunities for their students. The six Counties would give up over 73 million dollars, 14 of which would come from Campbell County. Gillette High School athletic director Cliff Hill said that Gillette’s extra funds do not benefit athletics,. and the biggest budget at Gillette high school isn’t even a sport. Hill says the largest benefit to Gillette student athletes comes from mostly private off-season programs. We’ll find out later tonight the fate of Amendment “B.” Join our live Team Election Night Coverage, beginning at 7 o’clock on AM 14-10 KWYO.

The Sheridan College Generals are preparing for another road-trip this week. They went 2-1 at a tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho last week. One interested observer at last week’s semi-final game was Wyoming High School Activates Association Commissioner Ron Laird. The State board approved a reorganization of Class 5-A Conferences last week, which puts Sheridan in the East Conference -  a change that made some schools happy and others not so happy. Laird says the major sticking point came when Star Valley was moved from the 4-A to the 5-A. One big issue always on the mind of the Association is good sportsmanship, which you could also call "appropriate behavior". As adults, we sometimes forget the big picture. With our high school athletes, take some time before you go to your next event - make a check list and become a better fan.

The Wyoming High School Activities Association has re-organized the Class 4-A Conferences for next year with an assist from Sheridan High School activities director Tom Racette. Last month the association set conferences with Sheridan, Gillette, both Casper schools, and both Cheyenne schools; but that plan seemed to really hurt Sheridan’s chances for success because they would be the smallest school in the league going against the state’s five biggest schools. Raccette cited travel distances as the main concern and took another plan to the association meeting in Casper yesterday. The board went with Racette’s recommendation, and the new conferences will be set up as East and West. The East Conference will have Sheridan, Riverton, Laramie, Gillette, and both Cheyenne schools. The West will have the Casper schools with Green River, Evanston, Rock Springs, and 4-A newcomer Star Valley. The new configuration will go into effect next fall.
