2006 Kids Fishing Day will be celebrated with a big event at the fairgrounds pond Saturday. Kids Fishing Day activities are open to all boys and girls ages 12 and under. The event will run from 9 to noon Saturday. All fishing gear and bait will be provided by the sponsors any kids wanting to bring their own gear can do so. All the gear and lots of prizes will be given out to all the participants.

The Sheridan Troopers are off until Friday. They host a double header with the Billings Lobos Friday evening at 5 o’clock. Sunday they head up to Billings for two with the Billings Scarlets and come home for another double-header Monday evening against Rapid City post 22. That double header will get started at 5 o’clock.

The Sheridan Jets are off until next week. They are scheduled for road double headers next week at Casper and Spearfish South Dakota Tuesday and Thursday.

Time is running out to enter the Cowboy Joe Golf Tournament Saturday at The Powder Horn. The tournament is the Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship Event in the Summer Cowboy Joe Golf Series. It’s a four person team scramble. To enter a team contact Jared Newlon at Wyoming Cowboy Joe in Laramie 766-6242, proceeds benefit University of Wyoming student athletes through the Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship.

Sheridan Media will host our Benefit Golf Tournament next week Friday June 9th at Kendrick Golf Course. This is a fun event for all golfers no matter what your ability or handicap. It’s a blind draw two-some tournament. Team’s are paired together by a blind draw the morning of the tournament and are paired together to make the teams as even as possible. Shotgun tee time will be at 1 o’clock next Friday. A BBQ and awards ceremony will take place following play. We have 100 dollars in prize money plus dozens of pin and tee prizes and raffle drawings. Proceeds from the event will go to the Sheridan Public Arts Committee to aid in the groups effort to purchase more permanent art work for Downtown Sheridan. Sheridan media is matching the first five thousand dollars raised. This weekend the Annual Three on Three Hoop Jam Basketball Tournament will be played in Downtown Sheridan. Parts of Main Street will be blocked off for play Saturday and Sunday.

This weekend also starts All-Star Week 2006 as the players that make up the Wyoming High School All-Star Basketball Teams will be arriving at Sheridan College to begin their week of preparation leading up to the big games Friday and Saturday June 9th and 10th. Games one and two will be played at 6 and 8 pm at the Hoffman Dome Friday June 9th. The series shifts to Billings and Rocky Mtn. College for games three and four on June 10th. All four games will be broadcast live on am 14-10 KWYO. One Sheridan County athlete will play for the Wyoming All-Stars. That’s Steph Stender who just graduated from Sheridan High School and will play her college basketball at the University of Montana in Missoula this fall.

The Sheridan Troopers played well in their home opener yesterday as they hosted the Casper Oilers in a non-conference double header. Chris Reynolds was the winning pitcher as the Troops won the first game 5-1. The second game went back and fourth with Casper taking a 7-4 lead going into the bottom of the 7th inning. The Troops came back and scored three runs to send the game into extra innings but Casper was able to score 5 runs in the eighth inning and hung on to beat the Troops 12-8 in the night cap. Chris Reynolds had a great start in the first game giving up only one run. Arras says coming off of is first college season Reynolds looks good early in the season. The troops are taking today off and get back to practice tomorrow. On Friday they play at home against the Billings Lobos. That double header will start at 5 o’clock then Sunday at the Billings Scarlet and back at home Monday against post 22 from Rapid City starting at 5 o’clock.

The Sheridan Jets are off this week. They will play two road double headers next week at Casper and Spearfish South Dakota Tuesday and Thursday. The Jets are scheduled to be on the road for most of the month of June. Their next scheduled home games aren’t until June 28th.

On Saturday the University of Wyoming Cowboy Joe Club will host the Annual Michael Phillips Scholarship Golf Tournament at The Powder Horn. The tournament tees off at 8 o’clock Saturday morning. Proceeds from this event goes to support University of Wyoming student athletes through the Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship at University of Wyoming. It’s a four-person team scramble. Several personnel from the University Athletic Department will be in attendance for this tournament including several coaches. They will take later registration this week. You can get into the tournament by contacting Jared Newlon at Wyoming Cowboy Joe in Laramie at 766-6242.

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department along with several other local sponsors will host the Annual Kids Fishing Day Saturday at the fairgrounds fishing pond 9 am to noon. It’s all part of National Fishing Week. All kids are invited to participate. All gear and bait will be provided and all the gear donated by sponsors will be given away plus all the kids will win prizes.
 
The Colorado Rockies are back in the national league western division race, after losing five straight the Rocks have now won two in a row and will play at the San Diego Padres tonight. You can hear tonight’s game live on am 14-10 KWYO starting with the Rockies on deck program at 7:30

The Sheridan Jets play a home double header tomorrow against Gillette. The first pitch will be tossed out at 1 o’clock at Thorne-Rider Stadium. The Troopers will host the Casper Oilers in their traditional home opener on Memorial Day. The Troops are 1-1 on the season after splitting games in Billings a week ago. Monday they will have their full squad in uniform. The Oilers come into Monday’s match-up with a new coaching staff and a new outlook as they know they will host the Northwest Regional Tournament in August. Even though they play in the same conference Monday’s games are scheduled as non-conference. Head coach john arras says opening at home with Casper has been a Trooper traditional for many years. The first pitch Monday will be tossed out at 1 o’clock.

Tomorrow we invite you to join us for “Breakfast With the Coaches” live from Perkins Family Resturant on am 14-10 KWYO. On the show tomorrow Kim Love will join us and speak about the up coming Sheridan Media Benefit Golf Tournament and from the Wyoming Game and Fish Office in Sheridan Information Specialist Warren Mische will join us for some tips and advice as you head outdoors this weekend and this spring. Again the coaches show is live tomorrow morning on am 14-10 KWYO starting at 8 o’clock at Perkins.

Next week is National Fishing Week and the Wyoming Game and Fish Office in Sheridan along with several sponsors will host Kids Fishing Day at the Sheridan County Fairgrounds pond next Saturday from 9 am to noon. This is a great day to take kids fishing if they don’t have their own gear it will be provided and a lot of that gear will be given away as gifts and prizes. Everything from rods and reels to bait will be provided so bring your kids to the fairgrounds pond next Saturday between 9 am and noon for Kids Fishing Day.

Tonight the Colorado Rockies open a weekend series at the San Francisco Giants. You can hear tonight game at 7:30, tomorrow’s game at 6:30 and Sunday afternoon at 1:30. All three games can be heard live on am 14-10 KWYO.

The Sheridan Troopers are 1-1 on the season as they get ready to host two games with the Casper Oilers Monday. The Troops got some good news this week as number one starting pitcher/ first basemen Chris Reynolds is back with the team for his final season after being away from Sheridan for his freshmen season at South Dakota State. With Reynolds return not only with the Troopers benefit on the mound but in the bating order and on defense with Reynolds bat and play at first base. Also back from college for his final season is Michael Arras. He will anchor the Troops infield at shortstop. Reynolds has been back with the team for three days and says his time in a college program has made him a much better pitcher. While pitching in college Reynolds didn’t get much of a chance to bat and he got no time at first base two things he is really looking forward to this weekend. Another of the starters from last year is back. That’s Zach Hurst who will do the catching again this summer. Husrt says after a couple of close calls at the state tournament the last two year’s the team is confident they can once again contend in the post season.

The Troopers split their games in Billings last week. Monday afternoon they take the field at 3 o’clock for the double header with Casper.

The weekend will start with the Sheridan Jets playing a home double header Saturday against Gillette. The first game will start at 1 o’clock.

The Troopers will host their annual Trooper Baseball Camp June 7th, 8th and 9th. The camp is open to all Webb Wright baseball players. The camp will run each day from 9 to noon at Thorne-Rider Stadium. It’s a great opportunity for young players to get a lot of solid baseball fundamentals with the Trooper players and coaches. Several other local baseball people including former Trooper coaches PJ Marshall and Mike McCaferty will be clinicians for this camp. Next weekend the annual 3 on 3 Hoop Jam Basketball tournament will return to downtown Sheridan. The tournament will be played on main street June 3rd and 4th.

The Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament hosted by the Wyoming Cowboy Joe Club will be played at The Powder Horn June 3rd. Several representatives from the University of Wyoming athletic department will be in attendance at the event, which raises funds for the Michael Phillips Scholarship at the University. Sheridan Media will host out Benefit Golf Tournament on Friday June 9th at Kendrick Golf Course. Tee time is an afternoon shot gun followed by an awards BBQ for all the players. The tournament is a two-person team event. Teams are picked by a blind draw according to handicap so the teams are evenly matched. 1000 dollars in prize money will be awarded plus lots on tee and pin prizes and raffle drawings. Sheridan Motor has donated hole in one prizes on all the par 3’s including a trip to Atlantic City and the Trump Taj Mahal Resort, a two year smart care package and a new Nike driver, 36 dozen Nike golf balls and a new Pontiac. The Sheridan Troopers and Jets will have home games this weekend. The Jets will play Saturday afternoon and the Troopers Monday afternoon with the spring sports season finishing up over the weekend. Both the Jets and Troopers are now at full strength. Head coach John Araas says this will be a great summer for the Jets as Sheridan will host the American Legion Northwest Regional Tournament in August. The Jets host a double header Saturday against Gillette starting at 1 o’clock. The troopers will play Monday afternoon against the Casper Oilers. That double header will start at 3 o’clock as Araas talks about the team’s preparation for their home opener.

This weekend kicks off a busy summer of sporting events in Sheridan. We’ll get started with a big golf tournament and basketball tournament next week as the annual 3 on 3 Hoop Jam outdoor basketball tournament will be played June 3rd and 4th on main street in downtown Sheridan.

Also on June 3rd the Wyoming Cowboy Joe Golf Series returns as the Cowboy Joe Club hosts the annual Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament at The Powder Horn. The tournament is a four-person team scramble and will shot gun start at 8 am. Every spot in the tournament was filled last year and if you would like to get a team into the tournament contact Wyoming Cowboy Joe in Laramie at 766-6242. Last week in Buffalo the Cowboy Joe event was sold out and was a major success. Several people from the U.W. Athletic department will be at The Powder Horn for the event. A BBQ will follow play. All proceeds from the tournament goes to support U.W. student athletes through the Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship.

The Annual Wyoming / Montana High School basketball all star series will be played. The first two games will be played in the Hoffman Dome Friday June 3rd at 6 and 8 pm with games 3 and 4 in Billings. Saturday June 10th. The all-stars will arrive in Sheridan Sunday June 4th to start preparation for the event. Sheridan County will have one representative on this year’s teams, that will be Steph Stender from Sheridan High School who will also be continuing her basketball career this fall at the University of Montana.

The Colorado Rockies have fallen into third place in national league west. They are a game and a half out of the lead after losing at Los Angleles last night. Tonight the Rockies close out their series with Dodgers and we will broadcast the game live on am 14-10 KWYO starting with Rockies on deck at 7:30. Following tonight’s game the Rockies head to San Francisco for a three game weekend series. All three games will be broadcast live on KWYO.

We take a look today at all the top finishers from Sheridan County at the high school state track and field championships. For Sheridan High School Shelly Forbes won both the 1600 and 3200 meters and was 3rd in the 800 meters. Ben Soukup won the 300 meter hurdles and was 2nd in the 110 meter hurdles. Scott Pettit was 3rd in the pole vault teammate. Josh Sandoval was 8th, Jessica Horsely was 3rd in the shot put. Carlee Carizosa was 6th in the 800 meters. Taylor Gardner was 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles and 6th in the 300 meter hurdles. Justin Will was 3rd in the triple jump and 6th in the 100 meters. Robbie Walters was 7th in the 300-meter hurdles and 8th in the 200 meters.

For Tongue River High School Brittny Jones was 5th in the discus. Lori Tarver was 5th in the 400 meters and Tom White was 6th in the shot put.

For Big Horn High School Ross Gilbert was 4th in the 110 meter hurdles, 6th in the 300 meter hurdles and 5th in the high jump. Ian Scofield was 2nd in the triple jump, Clark Van Hoosier was 7th in the 800 meters, Ben Rhinesmith was 3rd in the pole vault. For the Lady Rams Nicole Ackerman was 2nd in the pole vault and 7th in the 100 meters. Sara Chapman was 7th in the 800 meters. Kaylie Vendela was 7th in the 1600 meters and Rachel Mead won the long jump and was 4th in the triple jump. For the Arvada / Clearmont girls Becky Holland placed 4th in the 300 meter hurdles and 7th in the 100 meter hurdles. Randa Claybaugh finished 3rd in the 200 meters.

The Sheridan Hersey Track Meet takes place this afternoon at Homer Scott Stadium. The Hersey meet is a youth event for boys and girls ages 9-14. The meet will get underway at 4 o’clock. All qualifiers will advance to the state meet which will be held in Sheridan June 24th.

All-state soccer selections have been announced. Several members of the Bronc and Lady Bronc teams made either the first or second team. For the Lady Broncs Rachel Ryan was selected to the first team as a goalkeeper. Also on the first team as a defender is Meagan Carlson. Lady Broncs on the all-state second team include Jackie Nelson, Laura Quist, Anna Konkel and Chelsey George. For the Broncs goalkeeper JD Dudrey made it as a first team selection along with Nate Olson and Danny Moreno. Steven Balkenbush was named to the 2nd team.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams had identical weekends as both teams won the consolation bracket at the state soccer championships. The Lady Broncs came back with two victories after losing in the first round against Cheyenne East. They beat Cheyenne central 2-1 and then beat Kelly Walsh 2-1 Saturday to win the consolation trophy. The Broncs went the same rout. They lost their opening round match against Kelly Walsh then came back to beat Lander 3-1 and knocked off Jackson in the consolation final 1-0.

In state track and field news the Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs both finished 6th in the class 4-A state track meet. The Big Horn Lady Rams finished 6th in 2-A. The Rams finished 9th for Tongue River. The girls were 15th and the boys 18th with NSI in 19th place.

The Sheridan Troopers opened their baseball season yesterday splitting a double header with the Billings Lobos. The Troops won the first game 16-6. Kyle Gieselman was the winning pitcher. The Troops dropped the second game by the same score. This week they’ll be at full strength when they get their spring sports athletes back in the field. The Troopers host a double header with the Casper Oilers a week from today on Memorial Day beginning at 3 o’clock. Following those games the Troopers will host their baseball camp for all Webb Wright players. American Legion Baseball General Manager Dan Bilyue says now’s the time to get signed-up. Again the camp is June 7th, 8th, and 9th at Thorne-Rider Stadium from 9-noon each day. Register at the Rec Office or call Dan Bilyue at 672-2376.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams were knocked into the consolation bracket at the state soccer tournament yesterday. The Lady Broncs and Cheyenne East went into a shoot-out after they tied 1-1. East would come out on top on kicks to advance knocking the Lady Broncs into an elimination game today against Cheyenne Central.

The Broncs took on the defending state champs from Casper Kelly Walsh in the first round yesterday. Kelly came out on top 2-0 forcing the Broncs into an elimination game today against lender.

The state track and field championships got underway yesterday in Casper for Sheridan High School. Shelly Forbes won the girls 3200 meters, Jessica Horsely was 4th in the discus Taylor Gardner qualified in the 100 meter hurdles. The Lady Broncs also picked up points with a 7th place finish in the 4x800 meter relay.
 
The Broncs got on the board yesterday with Scott Pettit finishing 3rd in the pole vault. Teammate Josh Sandoval was 8th, Robbie Walters qualified for the finals in the 200 meters and Ben Soukup qualified for the finals in the 110 meter hurdles. Other Sheridan County athletes scoring points and qualifying for the finals in their events for the Arvada / Clearmont girls Randa Claybaugh qualified for the finals in the 200 meters and Becky Holland qualified for the 100 meter hurdle finals. For Tongue River High School Kristen Nielson picked up points with a 4th place finish in the shot put. For the Big Horn girls Kaylie Vendela finished 6th in the high jump. For the Rams Ross Gilbert qualified for the 110 meter hurdle final and the Rams 4x800 meter relay team finished 5th

Monday is the entry deadline for getting into the Sheridan Hersey Track Meet. The meet will be held Tuesday at 4 o’clock at Homer Scott Stadium at Sheridan High School. The Hersey track meet is open to all Sheridan County boys and girls ages 9-14. To register today stop by the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park.

The Sheridan Lady Bronc soccer team opens the state tournament this morning in Laramie against Cheyenne East. The Broncs open this afternoon against Casper Kelly Walsh.

The state track and field championships open today in Casper. Sheridan High School, Tongue River, Big Horn, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont all have athletes competing over the next three days.

This week the Sheridan Troopers and Jets will open the American Legion baseball season. The Troopers will play a double header up in Billings Sunday against the Billings Lobos. The Jets will play at home Sunday against the Casper Barons. The Troopers will host the Casper Oilers in their home opener on Memorial Day in a double header that will get underway at 3 o’clock.

Next week is senior health and fitness week in Sheridan. The week long event will feature different daily activities sponsored by the YMCA, The Rec District and the Senior Center. Registration will be Monday morning starting at 9 o’clock at the Senior Center. The week opens with an opening ceremony at 10 o’clock at the Whitney Commons Amphitheater. The week will culminate with a picnic in Kendrick Park on Friday the 26th. For more information stop by the Sheridan Senior Center.

The Sheridan Rec District will host the annual Sheridan Hersey track meet next Tuesday at 4 o’clock at Homer Scott Stadium at Sheridan High School. Hersey track is open to all boys and girls in Sheridan County ages 9-14. To register for the Hersey Track Meet stop by the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park.

The Wyoming Cowgirls basketball team is coming off one of the programs most successful season’s after finishing with 21 wins and a trip to the women’s NIT. It could have even been better as the cowgirls just missed a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The Cowgirls are loaded with great underclassmen at the guard positions and Legerski says the big need is getting some big players into the program which is getting to be a tough task.

The Wyoming Cowboys made a great run in The Mountain West Conference Tournament losing in the title game to San Diego State. Coach McClain says that generated a lot of confidence in the players. Freshmen point guard Brandon Ewing made a big splash in his first year with the Cowboys and McClain says Ewing is the type of player that can take the Pokes to the next level.

The start of the Cowboy football season in September 2nd when they open with Utah State. The quarterback position is still up in the air as the Pokes head into the summer. Head coach Joe Glenn (says he was pleased coming out of spring drills.

Several coaches and athletes from the University of Wyoming spent the afternoon at the Sheridan Junior High yesterday hosting a sports festival. Students were able to participate in football, soccer, basketball and volleyball activities. Head coaches in attendance yesterday included basketball coaches Joe Legerski and Steve McClain and football coach Joe Glenn. Glenn especially likes getting out around the state and getting his players in front of young Wyoming fans. Glenn says the Pokes came out of spring football in great shape. The Cowboys will start the 2006 season with a new quarterback but the coach says he’s pleased with the guys that will anchor the offense up front. Sheridan’s Austin Hall will start the season at outside linebacker for a pretty good Wyoming defensive unit. Joe Evers has begun his career with the Cowboys and is getting bigger and stronger.

The Wyoming basketball Cowboys were able to salvage what appeared to be a lost season with their title game run in the Mountain West Tournament in March. Head coach Steve McClain says the players did a great job of battling through some tough times in the final week of the season.

The Wyoming Cowgirls had a 21 win season that ended in the second round of the women’s NIT in March.

These coaches will be returning to Sheridan in a couple of weeks to participate in the annual Cowboys Joe Michael Phillips Scholarship Golf Tournament at The Powder Horn. The tournament will be held June 3rd. It’s a four person team scramble. To enter teams contact Wyoming Cowboy Joe at 766-6242.

The state track and field championships open in Casper tomorrow. All four of our Sheridan County schools will be represented at the meet. Sheridan High School will have 26 athletes competing.

The state soccer tournament opens tomorrow in Laramie. The Sheridan Lady Broncs will take on Cheyenne East in their opening round game at 9 o’clock. The Broncs take on the defending state champs from Casper Kelly Walsh tomorrow afternoon at 4:30.

The University of Wyoming athletic department will host one of their sports festivals in Sheridan today at the junior high. School kids from around the district will be invited to participate in several mini camps this afternoon. Many U-W coaches and their student athletes will be the clinicians for today’s event including football coach Joe Glenn and basketball coaches Joe Legerski and Steve McLain. They will also feature some soccer and volleyball skills as well. The sports festival will run from 12:30 to 3:30 at the Sheridan Junior High.

Tonight Wyoming Cowboy Joe will take over the festivities hosting their annual Sheridan County membership drive kickoff at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. The event will get underway at 6 o’clock. Cowboy coaches Joe Glenn and Steve McLain will be in attendance at tonight’s function. All Cowboy Joe members and Wyoming fans are urged to attend tonight’s event again starting at 6 o’clock at the Holiday Inn.

The Cowboy Joe Club will be making a return trip to Sheridan County Saturday June 3rd for the annual Mike Phillips Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament at The Powder Horn. The tournament is part of the Cowboy Joe summer golf series and has become the best tournament of the series. All proceeds from this tournament go to benefit student athletes at U-W through the Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship. The tournament is an 18 hole 4-person team scramble and will shotgun start at 8 am. A BBQ for the players will be held following the tournament. Several athletic department personnel from the university will attend and play in the tournament including athletic director Gary Barta, football coach Joe Glenn, basketball coaches Steve McLain and Joe Legerski and volleyball coach Pat Stangle. The Wyoming state track and field and soccer championships open Thursday. The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams will open play in Laramie Thursday. The Lady Broncs will play Cheyenne East Thursday morning and the Broncs will take on Casper Kelly Walsh in the afternoon.

The all-class state track and field championships open Thursday morning in Casper. All our Sheridan County schools will be represented in the meet.

Next week is senior health and fitness week in Sheridan. The week long event is being sponsored by the YMCA, the Sheridan Rec District and the Senior Center. There will be several daily activities for all seniors to participate in. The kickoff for the event will be Monday morning. Registration will be open from 9 to 10 o’clock at the Senior Center with the opening ceremonies at 10 am in the Whitney Commons Amphitheater. Senior health and fitness week will culminate with a celebration picnic for all participants Friday May 26th in Kendrick Park. Sheridan media will host our Annual Benefit Golf Tournament Friday June 9th at Kendrick Golf Course. The Sheridan Lady Broncs took their regional soccer championship Saturday while the Broncs lost in the regional final in a shoot-out. Now both teams have three days to prepare this week for the state tournament, which opens Thursday in Laramie.

The Lady Broncs opened the regional by routing Worland 5-1 in the opener then knocked off Riverton 1-0 in the title match. The Lady Broncs have the number one seed going into the state tournament. They open against Cheyenne East Thursday morning at 9 o’clock.

The Broncs opened their regional by beating Riverton 2-0 in the title match. They faced Worland and went through a scoreless overtime in a match that went to a shoot-out with Worland coming out on top 4-3 in the shoot-out to win the match officially 1-0. The Broncs are the second seed going in the state tournament. They open Thursday at 4:30 in the afternoon against Casper Kelly Walsh.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc track teams finished 4th and 5th at the north 4-A regional track meet over the weekend. 26 individuals and all 6 relays are qualified for the state meet, which gets underway Thursday in Casper. It’s the first time in quite some time that the Broncs have finished higher than the Lady Broncs in the regional. Even though the Lady Broncs dropped into 5th place Bauers says they had a successful weekend as well. With just three days to prepare for the state championships Bauers says they’ll get plenty of rest. The state championships open Thursday morning at 9 o’clock at Casper Kelly Walsh High School.

The Big Horn Lady Rams out distanced Burns by 24 points to win the girls Northeast Regional Track Championship over the weekend. The Tongue River girls were 7th and NSI finished 10th. In the boys regional Big Horn finished 5th overall with Tongue River 7th and NSI 10th.

In the class 1-A regional the Arvada/ Clearmont boys did not score any regional points and for the girls it was Randa Claybuagh doing most of the scoring for the Lady Panthers on Saturday. She placed in the top five in each of the sprints. All Sheridan County track qualifiers will be in Casper for the state championships again opening Thursday morning at Kelly Walsh High School.

In other local action this week the Sheridan American Legion Baseball season opens Sunday. The Troopers will play a double header at the Billings Lobos Sunday afternoon while the Jets are scheduled to open at home Sunday afternoon against the Casper Barons starting at 1 o’clock.

Almost 100 youth soccer teams from around the region will be compete over the weekend in the Annual Snickers Cup Soccer Tournament at The Big Horn Equestrian Center. The event wraps up on Sunday and in three weeks The Annual Hoop Jam three on three outdoor basketball tournament will be played on the streets of Downtown Sheridan opening June 3rd.

The Sheridan Rec District also opens up league play in two weeks for Webb Wright Baseball and starting the final week of may the Rec District will open play in their adult and girls softball leagues and some of their youth baseball leagues will also begin the final week of the month.

Beginning May 22nd the Rec District along with the Sheridan County YMCA are co-hosting senior health and fitness week. For more information stop by the YMCA or the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park.

The Annual Wyoming / Montana high school all-star basketball series opens June 9th at the Hoffman Dome at Sheridan College. The players will arrive in Sheridan on Sunday June 4th for a week of practice before hosting the first two games on June 9th at the Hoffman Dome.

It’s also golf tournament season as several fundraising events will be held in Sheridan County over the next several weeks

The Sheridan Bronc soccer team takes on Riverton Saturday in their first round match at the north 4-A regional tournament in Gillette. The Lady Broncs play at their regional over in Riverton. They play Worland in their first round match. All first round game are elimination games, winners advance to play afternoon seeding games for the state tournament which opens a week from today in Laramie.

The Broncs and Lady Broncs track teams open the north 4-A regional in Casper tomorrow. The meet runs through Saturday. The 1-A and 2-A east regional will be run in Torrington starting tomorrow for Tongue River, Big Horn, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont.

The Sheridan Troopers open their season May 21st with a double header on the road against the Billings Lobos. They open at home at 3 o’clock on Memorial Day against the Casper Oilers.

The Sheridan Jets open their season on May 21st as well. They host two games with the Casper Barons.

Several fund raising golf tournaments will be held in Sheridan over the next several weeks starting with the Sheridan College Booster Club Scramble at The Powder Horn next Friday. The Sheridan Broncs will play at their regional tournament in Gillette Saturday with the Lady Broncs over in Riverton for their regionals. The Broncs are the second seed going into the regional after Casper Natrona beat Gillette last night breaking a tie with the Broncs to pick up the number one seed. The Broncs will take on Riverton in their opening round match Saturday at 11 am.

The Lady Broncs have a number one seed heading into the regional tournament. Last night Worland beat Powell to earn the right to face the Lady Broncs in the opening round Saturday morning at 10:30.

All first round games Saturday are elimination matches. Winners advance to play for seeding into next week’s state tournament in Laramie. The top eight teams in each bracket make it to the state tournament.

In track and field news the Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs are putting the finishing touches on their work-outs as they get ready for the 4-A North Regional Meet in Casper. As of today 18 Broncs and Lady Broncs have qualified for the state meet and Bauers says there are several more that have a chance to get into the state meet in their last chance Friday and Saturday at the north 4-A regional in Casper.

The class 1-A and 2-A regional track meet will be held in Torrington Friday and Saturday. The Tongue River teams will be joined at the regional by Big Horn, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont. The all class state track and field championships open May 18th at Harry Geldien Stadium at Casper Kelly Walsh High School.

In youth track and field news the annual Sheridan Hersey Track Meet will be held Tuesday May 23rd at Homer Scott Stadium. The Hersey Track program is open to all Sheridan County boys and girls ages 9-14. The Sheridan Rec District runs the event. Following the local meet Sheridan will host the state meet June 24th. All qualifiers in the local meet advance to the state meet where over 300 kids from all over the state will compete with qualifiers getting a trip to the national Hersey Track Meet in August in Hersey Pennsylvania. Registration forms went to local schools last month but parents can register their kids at the Rec Office as well. Friday is the deadline for parent to sign-up their players for the Sheridan Rec District girls summer softball program. They take registration through Friday at the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park. They have leagues for all ages starting with a tee-ball league for 7-9 year olds, the colts slow pitch league for 10-12 year olds, and the ponies league for 13-15 year olds. League play begins in two weeks.

Adult softball registration closes Friday. All teams planning on playing in either the men’s league or co-rec league must have their fees into the Rec office by 5 o’clock Friday evening. League play begins the week of May 30th. Co-rec league play will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday with the men’s league playing their games on Thursday night’s. Men’s teams will play two games each night.

The Sheridan County YMCA will be hosting senior health and fitness week May 22nd through the 26th. They will have special events each day during the week for seniors. They will have many different activates to participate in from swimming to racquetball and every thing in between. They will hold registration from 9 to 10 am on May 22nd at the Whitney Commons Amphitheater. Opening ceremonies start at 10 o’clock then the events begins. A men’s slow pitch softball wood bat tournament will be held in Sheridan May 20th and 21st at the softball complex at Sheridan College. The tournament is open to all men’s D and D division teams. The University of Wyoming athletic department will host a kid’s sports festival next Tuesday at the Sheridan Junior High School. All the kids participating will get a chance to meet the coaches and athletes and participate in a bunch of mini camps. They’ll have football, basketball, volleyball and soccer. The sports festival runs from 12:30 to 3:30 on Tuesday. The afternoon belongs to the kids and Tuesday evening for all the adults as the Cowboy Joe Club will host their spring membership drive at the Sheridan Holiday Inn. Football coach Joe Glenn and basketball coach Steve McClain will be in attendance and speak to all the fans. It’s also a great chance for one on one conversations with the coaches. The Cowboy Joe Function will be at the Holiday Inn next Tuesday evening at 6 o’clock. Kids will also be given information on how to join the UW kids program. Member benefits in this club for youth include a t-shirt, annual birthday greetings from Pistol Pete, a news letter and free admission to designated games.

The 2006 outdoor three on three-basketball tournament also known as the Hoop Ham will take place in downtown Sheridan June 3rd and 4th. In high school sports today the soccer and track and field season’s enter post season play. This weekend the Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams will play at their regionals. State track and field regional events will take play Friday and Saturday. The Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs will be at the north 4-A regionals in Casper while Tongue River, Big Horn, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont compete at the east 1-A and 2-A regional in Torrington.

Count down to the start of baseball season continues as the Sheridan Troopers and Jets open 2006 on May 21st. The Troops will play two games in Billings against the Billings Lobos. The Jets will open at home against the Casper Barons. The Troops home opener will be on Memorial Day against the Casper Oilers.

The Sheridan Bronc soccer team started a little slow this spring but they came on strong the last three weeks and end the regular season in a tie for 1st place in the Northeast conference. The Broncs beat Casper Natrona 1-0 Saturday for goal keeper JD Dudrey’s 5th shut-out. The Broncs have a great seed for Saturday’s regional tournament in Gillette. They don’t know who they’ll play against in their first round match. Casper Natrona and Gillette play tomorrow and the outcome of that match will determine all the seeds for the regional.

The Lady Broncs played a scoreless tie with Casper Natrona Saturday. The Lady Broncs will have the top seed going into Saturday’s regional in Riverton. They’ll play the winner of a play- in match between Powell and Worland. Both regionals are win and you’re in the state tournament. Both the Broncs and Lady Broncs must win the opening matches Saturday. All teams advance play for seeding into the state tournament, which opens in Laramie on the 18th.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc track teams closed out the regular season in Gillette Friday. The Lady Broncs finished 3rd while the Broncs finished 4th. Here are some of the individual results of the top Sheridan finishers. First the Lady Broncs Kayla Fauber qualified for the state meet in the pole vault and the Broncs Josh Sandoval qualified for the state meet in pole vault as well and the Broncs 4x100 meter relay team of Reece Hall, Ben Soukup, Robbie Walters and Justin Will qualified for the state meet with a time of 44.1 seconds. Taking a look at the rest of the Lady Bronc top finishers - Talyor Gardner was 1st in the 200 meters, 3rd in the 100 meter hurdles and 2nd in the long jump. Shelly Forbes was 3rd in the 400 meters and 1st in the 3200 meters. Karlee Carisoza was 5th in the 400 meters. Erika Stender was 1st in the long jump and Jessica Horsely was 2nd in the shot put. For the Broncs Justin Will was 2nd in the 100 meters, Robbie Walters was 3rd in the 200 meters, Tyan Sorenson was 3rd in the 3200 meters, Ben Soukup was 2nd in both hurdle events, Scott Pettit was 2nd in the pole vault with Josh Sandoval 4th and boomer McLaughlin was 2nd in the high jump. Head coach Art Bauers expects over 40 athletes to compete at the north 4-A regionals in Casper this weekend. As of today 18 Broncs and Lady Broncs are qualified for the state meet. Many are qualified in more than one event and Baures expects a few more will meet the state meet qualifying standards at the regionals in Casper.

The class 1-A and 2-A regional track championships for Big Horn, Tongue River, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont will be held in Torrington this weekend. All qualifiers will meet in Casper for the all–class state championships beginning May 18th.

In Sheridan Rec District notes this is the final week to register girls for youth summer softball leagues. The deadline is Friday at 5 pm. Stop by the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park to sign up.

The Rec district is also scheduled to open the Kendrick Park Ice Cream Stand for the season Saturday and Kendrick Pool is scheduled to open May 26th.

The Sheridan Troopers will host their Annual Trooper Basball Camp for a three day run in June. The camp is open to all Webb Wright baseball players. Campers will get three days of baseball fundamentals with the Trooper players and coaches at Thorne-Rider Stadium. The camp will run from 9 am to noon each day. The Sheridan Troopers and Sheridan Jets have just a little over 2 weeks before the baseball season opens. Opening day is Sunday May. Head coach John Araas says the players on both teams have been working well together this spring to get ready for the start of the season. The second week in June the Troopers will host the annual Trooper Baseball Camp. The camp is open to all Webb Wright players. Araas says it’s great for the younger kids to get some good instruction but it helps the Troopers player as well. The Troopers open on the road at the Billings Lobos on May 21st. The home opener is Memorial Day against the Casper Oilers. The Jets open the season at home on the 21st against the Casper Barons.

In other action this week the spring high school soccer and track regular season ends. The Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams play the Casper Natrona Mustangs and Fillies Saturday. The boys play in Casper while the Lady Broncs host Natrona. That match will start at 10 o’clock Saturday morning.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc track teams will compete in their final regular season meet Friday afternoon in Gillette. The north 4-A regionals will be held next week in Casper. The Northeast 1-A and 2-A regional meet for Tongue River, Big Horn, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont will be held in Gillette next week. The all class state meet opens a three-day run in Casper Thursday May 18th.

The Sheridan College booster club will host their annual spring fundraising golf tournament on Friday May 19th at The Powder Horn. Coach McCarthy has also announced the dates for his 2006 Lady Generals Basketball Camps. The camp is split into two age sessions and will be held June 19th through the 22nd in the Hoffman Dome. The morning session will run from 9 until noon for 1st-6th grades and the afternoon session goes from 1 to 4 o’clock for grades 7 through 12. Campers will receive instruction in basketball fundamentals and also participate in several competitions like 3 on 3, 5 on 5 and shooting contests. In other basketball notes Frank McCarthy and men’s basketball coach Joel Davidson will be coaching the Wyoming High School All-star teams in the annual Wyoming / Montana High School all-star basketball series June 9th and 10th. The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams both have a chance to win their conference regular season crowns Saturday. Both Northeast conference races are tight as the Sheridan teams play their final conference matches Saturday. Both teams must win their games with Casper Natrona to have a chance to win their respective titles outright. Both teams have 1-0 losses against Natrona County this season. The Broncs will play at Natrona County Saturday while the Lady Broncs host Natrona Saturday at 10 am at Homer Scott Stadium. Soccer regional tournaments are next weekend. The Broncs will play in Gillette and the Lady Broncs in Riverton. The top eight teams from all the regionals advance to the state championships in Laramie in two weeks. Again the time for the Lady Bronc match with Casper Natrona has been changed from noon to 10 am Saturday.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc track teams close out the spring regular season at a meet in Gillette which gets underway at noon Friday. All regional meets are next weekend and all qualifiers then head off to the state championships set to begin Thursday May 18th in Casper.

In golf notes this morning Sheridan Media will be hosting The Annual Sheridan Media Benefit Golf Tournament June 9th at Kendrick Golf Course. Tournament proceeds will go to benefit the public arts committee to aid them in their purchase of additional permanent art work for downtown Sheridan. The tournament once again will be played on Friday June 9th at Kendrick Golf Course. All golfers in Sheridan County are invited to play in this fun and unique tournament. The format is for two person teams to be matched together in a blind draw so partners will not know who they’ll be playing with until the day of the tournament. All teams are matched by handicap in an effort to keep the teams as even as possible. The tournament will offer 1000 dollars in prizes, pin prizes and raffle prizes for all the players. Coming up on June 3rd the University of Wyoming Cowboy Joe Club will host the 2006 Michael Phillips Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament at The Powder Horn. This tournament has become the most popular event in the summer Cowboy Joe golf series. Over 140 golfers played in last year’s event. The tournament format is an 18 hole -four person team scramble. Proceeds for the tournament go to benefit students athletes and UW through the Michael Phillips Scholarship. To register to play in this tournament contact Wyoming Cowboy Joe in Laramie at 766-624.

June will be a great month to get involved in great benefit golf events as the Annual Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Fundraising Event will be played at The Powder Horn June 23rd. Along with great fun they also host a dinner and auction all to raise money for the Dog and Cat Shelter. Last year’s event was a huge success.

The first annual Sheridan Wood Bat Men’s Softball Tournament will be played in Sheridan May 20th and 21st. This tournament is open to all men’s C and D division teams. The entry deadline in Monday May 15th the entry fee is 150 dollars per team. The tournament will be double elimination with a consolation bracket. The tournament director is Mike Hansen. The Sheridan Rec District will hold registration for their summer girls softball leagues through next Friday. Parents can sign up players at the Rec Department Office in Thorne-Rider Park.

Adult softball team registration deadline is next Friday. All team fees must be into the Rec office by 5 o’clock on May 12th. League play begins the week of May 30th.

The Rec District will host the Sheridan Hersey Track Meet Tuesday May 23rd at 4 o’clock at Homer Scott Stadium. The Hersey track program is open to all youth ages 9-14. Sheridan will host the State Hersey Meet June 24th. To sign up kids for the local event stop by the Rec Office.

The Rec District is scheduled to open Kendrick Pool May 26th. They will have their Annual American Red Cross life guarding course May 30th through June 3rd. The cost of the course is 45 dollars. They are currently taking sign ups for this course at the Rec Office. The Rec District is set to open the Kendrick Park Ice Cream Stand next Saturday May 13th.

The Sheridan High School soccer teams find themselves in pretty good shape in league play with only one league match to play Saturday. The Broncs and Lady Broncs close out the regular season with games against Casper Natrona. With two wins this past weekend for the Broncs they find themselves right in the hunt for the league title but they must beat Natrona County in Casper Saturday. The Lady Broncs are still in first place in the league after weekend ties with Buffalo and Gillette. The match with Natrona Saturday at Homer Scott Stadium could settle the conference standings. Next week both teams will play at their regionals. The Lady Broncs will play in Riverton and the Broncs will be over in Gillette. Both regionals are one-day events on the 13th. After the regionals the top eight qualifiers will head off to the state championships set for Laramie May 18th, 19th and 20th.

All of our Sheridan County track teams will compete in their final regular season meets this week. Track regionals are next week at sites all over the state. The Broncs and Lady Broncs will compete at their regional in Casper. Tongue River, Big Horn, NSI and Arvada / Clearmont will have their regional in Gillette. All qualifiers will then head to the state track and field championships set for Casper May 18th, 19th and 20th.

Friday afternoon the Broncs and Lady Broncs will compete at the last chance Gillette qualifier. Head coach Art Bauers says this week and next will be important for their qualifiers and non-qualifiers alike. Bauers says they got a good look at their competition in Casper this past weekend.

With the spring high school season starting to draw to a close it’s time to look ahead to the summer and American Legion Baseball. Both the Sheridan Jets and Troopers have just a couple of weeks left before they open the season. Both teams open on May 21st. The Troops will play up in Billings against the Billings Lobos and will play their home opener on Memorial Day against the Casper Oilers. The Jets will open at home on the 21st against the Casper Barons.

The Sheridan Rec District is right in the middle of registration for their summer girls softball leagues. Parents can register players for the various leagues at the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park daily Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5 pm through next Friday.

The Sheridan Lady Broncs soccer team tied both weekend matches while the Broncs made a huge move in the conference standing winning both their matches. The Broncs beat Buffalo on Friday 1-0. The Bison where the 4th ranked team in the state at the time. The Broncs then went out and swept their season series with Gillette beating the Camels 2-0 Saturday. The Lady Broncs played a scoreless tie at Buffalo Friday and then got a late goal and tied Gillette 2-2 Saturday. Both teams have one game remaining on their regular season schedules. The Broncs will play at Casper Natrona Saturday while the Lady Broncs host Natrona. Both varsity matches will start at noon. The state regional tournaments will be held May 13th with the three day state championships set for Laramie May 18th, 19th and 20th.

The Sheridan High School track teams spent the weekend in Casper. On Friday eleven Broncs and Lady Broncs competed in the Wyoming track classic. Here’ are the results from the annual all-star event: for the girls Taylor Gardner was 5th in the 400 meters and 6th in the long jump, Karlee Carisoza was 6th in the 800 meters, Shelly Forbes blew the field away in the 1600 meters to win that event, Jessica Horsely was 2nd in the shot put and 3rd in the discus also Nicole Ackerman from Big Horn finished 4th in the pole vault. In the boys competition Ben Soukup was 3rd in the 110 meter hurdles and Soukup and teammate Robbie Walters went 2 / 3 in the 300 meter hurdles. The Broncs Ryan Sorenson was 9th in the 1600 meters, Josh Sandoval was 6th in the pole vault, Justin Will was 3rd in the long jump and in the high jump event Big Horn’s Ross Gilbert won the event and the Broncs Boomer McGlaughlin was 9th. Sheridan track coach Art Bauers says the track classic format really gives the athletes a boost as they get ready for the post season.

On Saturday the Broncs and Lady Broncs competed in the Casper Invitational and Bauers says they had a great day in that meet as well. The Broncs swept the 400 and 1600 meter relays. Drew Milner and Dusty Daniels went 5th and 7th in the 400 meters, Ryan Sorenson was 3rd in the 3200 meters and Scott Pettit was 4th in pole vault. For the girls Jessica Horsely was 2nd in the shot put and 3rd in the discus. Shelly Forbes was 2nd in the 800 meters, Kayla Fauber was 5th in the pole vault, Erika Stender was 2nd in the long jump. The Lady Broncs won the 1600 meter relay and 2nd in the 3200 meter relay.

The track regular season ends this week at a meet in Gillette Friday. The regional meet will be next week in Casper and the state championships will be in Casper May 18th, 19th and 20th.
