Sheridan High School will have a new wrestling coach in a few weeks, following the resignation of long time district coach and math teacher Chuck Flickinger. Flickinger met with Sheridan High School activities director Tom Racette, back in April, about making a change in the Bronc wrestling program. At that time no decision was made and in May they came up with a plan that would have made Flickinger, and current assistant coach Corey Hamrick co-head coaches next season. That fell through when the district got a yes, on the deal from Hamrick. However, Flickinger turned in his resignation June 17th. The resignation was then accepted by the district two school board.
District assistant superintendent Terry Burgess met with us this past Friday to give the District’s side of the issue but Burgess says because of confidentiality the district couldn’t comment on the specifics of Flickinger’s meeting with Sheridan High School activities director Tom Racette. Burgess went onto say the District wishes the Flickingers the best as they move onto Jackson. The process of selecting a new head wrestling coach is on-going and in a few weeks, the position should be filled.
Who is the leading candidate? Well, it could come from the Broncs wrestling room as most think that person is current high school teacher and Broncs assistant coach Corey Hamrick. Hamrick is from Casper and wrestled in college at the University of Wyoming

The Sheridan Troopers split a double header with Cody on Friday evening. The Troops bombed Cody 22 - 8 in the first game but Cody came back and took the second game 10-4. The Troopers will play at home tomorrow night when they host a double header with Sturgis, South Dakota the first game will start at 5 o’clock.

The 2005 Wyoming state trap shoot opens a five-day run in Sheridan on Wednesday. Competitors from as many a 22 states are expected to compete in the event which was last held in Sheridan in 2001 when nearly 500 people competed. All events are sanctioned by the amateur trapshooting association. Again, events begin Wednesday and will culminate with their outdoor banquet Saturday night and a final day of competition Sunday.

06/24/05

Another coaching change will take place at Sheridan High School. That’s been the story for the last year. This time it’s long time Sheridan High School wrestling and football coach Chuck Flickinger who has been shown the door by school district #2. Flickinger had been in district two since 1983. Flickinger says the whole thing came down back in April and he says he’s the person that kept it quiet. This past Monday is when the news finally surfaced publicly. Flickinger was asked to resign his head wrestling coach position by Sheridan High School Activities Director Tom Racette and stay on as the Broncs sophomore football coach, a post he has also held for several season’s. But now we know that is not happening either and to add insult to injury the district is also losing a quality math teacher. Flickinger split his ties with the district and will now pack up his family and move on to Jackson High School. We spoke with Flickinger at length about the whole process and first and foremost I will tell you he has no ill will toward anyone in the school district and says he will take away some great memories from the Sheridan High School Wrestling Program. Flickinger says he’s also proud of the math department at Sheridan High School. The Flickinger’s will be leaving Sheridan for Jackson next month. Flickinger’s departure means 7 new head coaches have taken over programs in the last years plus numerous assistant-coaching positions. It’s a state wide epidemic as the Governor even steped in last week to help out district’s around the state be lessoning the certification process. Newcastle is the state’s poster child in this problem - their district has 20 coaching opening prompting their administration to announce some programs could be suspended next year if they can’t fill those vacancies

On a side note to the Flickinger story we placed a call to Sheridan School District Two superintendent Craig Doughrety to find out more information on the situation. Assistant District #2 Superintendent Terry Burgess will be the spokesperson for the district and will be meeting with us today. We will have that part of the story for you tomorrow morning and for sure if you don’t have a chance to hear the district’s side of this story tomorrow, you will also have a chance on Monday morning here on news / talk 930 KROE

Starting pitcher Chris Reynolds helped himself out with a three run homer to start the scoring and the rest of the bating order got it going as well. With Reynolds in control of the mound, the Troops won the second game 9-3 to win their first conference game of the season. Kyle Boyd took the loss in the first game but pitched well after getting out the first inning. The Troops looked like a different ball club in the second game and Araas says they played with a lot of confidence. The Sheridan Troopers and Rapid City post 22 showed a lot of patience yesterday and after a two-hour rain delay they played baseball at Thorne-Rider Stadium last night. It turned into a slugfest with the game finally called after eight innings because of lightning and finally another thundershower that washed it out with post 22 ahead of the Troops 14-13. Post 22 got off early but the Troops hung in and put on a great charge late but the weather forced the game to end early with the Troopers putting a lot of pressure on post 22. The Troops got down 8-1 in the third inning and down 13-3 going into the fifth and then the bats came alive and the Troopers got rolling. Chris Reynolds tore the cover off the ball with a solo homer and a two run jack he then added a sac fly with 5 RBI’s. Troopers newcomer Josh Dunkelburger also had a solo homerun last night. Araas says Reynolds is really starting to hit the ball hard. Next up for the Troops is a three day wood bat tournament in Casper. They will play five games and open with the Oilers on Friday.
