The Sheridan Troopers and Casper Oilers were rained out yesterday. No make up date has been announced and because the schedules for both teams are set it may be hard to reschedule and the fact they will play four more games against each other during the regular season. Next up is a double header Friday at home against post 320 from Rapid City. The first game will start at 5 o’clock. A week from today the Troopers
Will host a split squad of players from post 22 from Rapid City.

June is sports camp month in Sheridan County. This week Big Horn head basketball coach Mike Daley is hosting a camp.

Sheridan High School and Sheridan College will host a team camp in two weeks with more than 25 high school teams from Wyoming and Montana scheduled to participate in the event, which will be held at Sheridan High School and at the Hoffman Dome.

Next week Tongue River High School will host their football camp. The camp will run June 9th, 10th and 11th at Tongue River High School. The camp will run in the evening from 6 to 8 pm each evening. For more information contact TR head football coach Paul Marshall at 673-5381.

Sheridan High School head football coach Tim Leroy will host the Bronc Football Camp in two weeks. Current and former NFL players will be part of the camp staff. As the new week begins the Broncs are currently hosting their spring football camp.

Sheridan College women’s basketball coach Frank McCarthy will host his Lady Generals Basketball Camp for girls June 20th through the 23rd at the Hoffman Dome at Sheridan College. The camp will have two sessions each day. The morning session will run from 9 till noon for girls in the 1st through 6th grades and the afternoon session from 1 to 4 pm will be for girls in the 7th through 12th grades. The 5th Annual Wild West Hoop Jam Three on Three outdoor basketball tournament will run Saturday and Sunday in downtown Sheridan.

And the Powder Horn will host the Annual Mike Phillips Wyoming Cowboy Joe Golf Tournament Saturday. The tournament is a four person team scramble and will start at 8 o’clock Saturday morning. All proceeds benefit the Mike Phillips Scholarship at the University of Wyoming. Cowboy and Cowgirl basketball coaches Steve McClain and Joe Legerski will attend and play in the event Saturday along with athletic director Gary Barta and Dave Walsh. The Sheridan Troopers host the Casper Oilers Monday. They will play a double header at Thorne-Rider Stadium Monday afternoon starting at 1 o’clock. These games are non-conference and the last time these two met it was in last year’s state tournament when Casper eliminated the Troops in an epic 12-inning game. This Memorial Day double header has been a tradition in Sheridan for many years and the American Legion Post will have a color guard and Mayor Kinskey will be on hand to throw out the first pitch.

The Colorado Rockies will play this weekend in Chicago. They beat the Cubs 5-2 yesterday and will play at the Cubs tomorrow and you can hear the game live at 10 am. Also Sunday’s game at 11:15 and Memorial Day at home against the St. Louis Cardinals at 5 o’clock. All games will be live on AM 14-10 KWYO.

The Troopers will host their Annual Trooper Baseball Camp Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. The camp is open to all Sheridan County Webb Wright baseball players. The camp will be at Thorne-Rider Stadium from 9 to noon each day. Each camper gets a camp t-shirt and great instruction in the fundamentals of baseball. They do have registration forms at the Rec District Office in Thorne-Rider Park but you have to pick them up today or Dan Bilyue says they will also take registration at the ball park Tuesday morning before the camp opens. The registration deadline for the June 5th Cowboy Joe / Mike Phillips Scholarship Golf Tournament is coming up soon. The tournament will be played at The Powder Horn and they do still have a few open slots for teams. The four person teams will play an 18-hole scramble and Cowboy Joe will host a bbq following play. Cowboy basketball coach Steve McClain, Cowgirls basketball coach Joe Legerski, athletic director Gay Barta and Dave Walsh will all attend and play in this event. Post-season awards have been announced for girl’s high school soccer and five Sheridan Lady Broncs have made the all-state teams. Becca Ryan was the only Lady Bronc player to be named to the first team she made it as a defender. Four other Lady Broncs were named to the all-state 2nd team. They were Rachel Ryan, Nicole South, Jackie Nielson and Anna Konkel.

The Sheridan Troopers will host their annual Trooper Baseball Camp next week. The camp will run next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. The camp is open to all Webb Wright baseball players. The camp runs each day from 9 to noon at Thorne-Rider Stadium. The Troopers, Jets and coaches will be the clinicians for the camp. Registration forms are still available at the Sheridan Rec Distirct Office in Thorne-Rider Park or you can contact Sheridan American Legion Baseball General Manager Dan Bilyue at 672-2376.

The Sheridan Bronc football team opened up spring drills today. The Broncs hit the practice field at Sheridan High School at 3 o’clock this afternoon for the first of 14 days of drills and camps. Broncs head coach Tim Leroy says the Broncs will host a three day football camp the second week in June. Sheridan High School basketball coach Mike Ibach has teamed up with Sheridan College to host a high school team camp in June. 27 teams have signed up for the camp including several teams from Wyoming and Montana. The camp will run June 16th through the 18th and will be held at the Hoffman Dome at Sheridan College and at Sheridan High School. Each team will play seven games over the three-day camp. The Sheridan Broncs will also be participating in team camps in Billings and Laramie this summer.

Sheridan College Lady Generals basketball coach Frank McCarthy will host his girl’s basketball camps in June. The Sheridan Troopers take a 1-5 record into action Memorial Day. The Troopers will host a double header Monday afternoon at 1 o’clock against the Casper Oilers.

The Colorado Rockies are 1-5 on their current road trip; the Rocks play a weekend series at the Chicago Cubs. You can hear live action through the Memorial Holiday Weekend Saturday and Sunday at 10 am and 11:15 am and Monday night the Rocks are back home for a series with the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Sheridan Troopers will play their next games on Monday when they host the Casper Oilers in non-conference action during their traditional memorial day double header. Play begins at 1 o’clock Monday afternoon.

Sheridan Bronc football players will be back on the field tomorrow as head coach Tim Leroy begins his second year as the Broncs head coach. Wyoming High School Activities Association rules gives football program 14 days for spring and summer work-outs and camps. The Broncs, including incoming freshmen, will take to the practice field at Sheridan High School tomorrow afternoon at 3 o’clock. Leroy will also be hosting a football camp for all youth and high school players in June. Broncs head basketball coach Mike Ibach has scheduled a huge team basketball camp to take place in Sheridan June 16th, 17th and 18th. Currently 27 high school basketball teams from Montana and Wyoming have agreed to attend the camp. The camp will be held at Sheridan High School and at Sheridan College. All of our Sheridan County teams will participate and that includes most every team from our region including the three big schools; Billings West, Senior and Skyview also Great Falls High School. The Broncs will also participate in a two day camp at Billings Skyview June 24th and 25th and will attend the University of Wyoming team camp in July.

In other athletic camp notes, Tongue River Eagles head coach Paul Marshall will host his annual football camp June 9th through the 11th. The camp is open to all football players in Sheridan County. The cost is 30 dollars per player and the camp will run each evening from 6 to 8 pm. Gear check out for the camp will be June 8th at Tongue River High School. Clinicians will be the Tongue River coaching staff and other local coaches plus former Tongue River All-Staters DJ dDarcorn who played on two national championship teams for Carroll College in Montana and current Stanford Cardinal defensive lineman Chris Horn. Two Sheridan Bronc soccer players have received some post season honors from the state’s high school soccer coaches. Both Bronc goal keeper JD Dudrey and mid-fielder Wade Kinsey were named to the all-state 2nd team.

Time is running out to enter your teams for the Mike Phillips / Cowboys Joe Golf Tournament. The tournament will be played June 4th at The Powder Horn. The tournament is a four person team scramble and to register your teams call the Wyoming Cowboy Joe Office in Laramie at 766-6242. All proceeds from this event go to the Mike Phillips Scholarship at the Universty of Wyoming. The Sheridan Hersey Track Meet takes place this evening up at Sheridan High School. The meet is for all boys and girls ages 9-13. Several running and field events will be held today and all qualifiers in their age groups will advance to the State Hersey Meet which will be held at Homer Scott Stadium on June 25th. In the state meet all winners will advance to the national meet in Hersey Pennsylvania.

The Rec Distirct has started it’s summer of adult softball. Co-rec games are played Monday through Wednesday ands men’s league play is on Thursday night at the softball complex at Sheridan College. The Rec District is also set to open another season of Webb Wright Baseball and on June 7th Whitey Wells and the Rec District will host their first kids fishing day of the summer. The first session is full and for more information on July and August fishing contact Whitey Wells at the Rec. District at 674-6421.

The Sheridan Chapter of Walleyes Unlimited will host their Annual Kids Fishing Day at Tongue River Reservoir June 11th. Registration is being taken at the Rec District and transportation will be provided for the kids. The Walleye Club will also host lunch for all the kids. To register stop by the Rec Office in Thorne-Rider Park.

The Wyoming Cowboy Joe Club will host the Annual Mike Phillips Scholarship Golf Tournament at The Powder Horn June 4th. The event is part of the Cowboy Joe Summer Golf Series. Tournaments were held last week in Buffalo, Gillette and Spearfish South Dakota. All winning foursomes will play for the Cowboy Joe Championship in Laramie in September and the overall winners will receive the grand prize of a trip with the Cowboy football team to their game this fall at San Diego State. The Sheridan Troopers are off until Monday and are coming off losing a double header Sunday at the Billings Lobos. The Troops get a chance to see their first Wyoming team of the season on Monday when they host their annual Memorial Day double header with the Casper Oilers. The double header will start at 1 o’clock. Head coach John Araas says the Troops have plenty to work on before they face the Oilers. The Troops have had trouble scoring runs in their first 6 games and Araas says they are addressing that issue.

The Big Horn Rams athletics had quite a school year. The Rams won the 2-A state football title for the second straight year last fall then they were 3rd at the state basketball tournament in March and the Rams capped of a great year winning the boys state 2-A team track and field championship Saturday in Casper. The Rams nipped Lovell by 13 points to win the title. The Lady Rams finished 6th overall.

The Tongue River Lady Eagles finished in 17th place and the Eagles were 16th.

In the class 1-A the NSI boys were 6th and the girls finished 15th.

The Arvada/Clearmont girls finished 6th overall. Randa Claybaugh took the 1-A girls 100-meter championship on Saturday to lead the Lady Panthers.

Anya Wechsler finished off her high school pole vaulting career with a state championship Friday. Wechsler ends her high school career as the states best ever female pole vault. Not only does she hold the state record and also the highest vault in Wyoming high school history the Lady Broncs finished 8th in the overall 4-a standings. Also a highlight for the Lady Broncs Saturday was Shelly Forbes. She finished 2nd in the 1600 meters. The Broncs finished 10th overall at the state meet.

The state track meet and the state soccer tournament ends the high school sports season every spring and Casper Kelly Walsh High School will have soccer bragging rights for another year after both the Kelly girls and boys won state soccer championships Saturday at the Big Horn Equestrian Center. The Kelly Walsh girls with stood a ferocious berage of shots in the last 1 minutes of their title match with Cheyenne East to win 1-0 and the Kelly Walsh boys knocked off Perenial soccer powder Cheyenne east 2-1.

On Saturday June 4th the Annual Mike Phillips Memorial Cowboy Joe Club Golf Tournament will be played at The Powder Horn. It’s a four-person team scramble and spots are filling fast so teams are urged to register as soon as possible by calling Wyoming Cowboy Joe at 766-6242. The tournament will shot gun start at 8 am on the 4th and a bbq for all the players will follow. Several University of Wyoming athletic department personnel will attend and play in the tournament including cowboy head basketball coach Steve McClain. McClain was in buffalo last Thursday to compete in the Buffalo Cowboy Joe event and he told us that the coming summer will be a busy time for all cowboy returning players. McClain says he’s excited about the Pokes incoming class for next season.

The Sheridan Troopers couldn’t catch a break in Billings yesterday as they dropped both ends of a double header against the Billings Lobos. Chris Reynolds took the loss in the first game but pitched a brilliant game but didn’t get any run support. Reynolds threw a three hitter gave up no earned runs and struck out 11 but the Troops could muster only one single from Matt Hurst and the Troops lost 4-3. The Troops got shut out in game two 6-0. The Troopers are now 1-5 overall and will host non- conference games with the Casper Oilers on Memorial Day. That double header will start a week from today at 1 o’clock at Thorne-Rider Stadium.

The Sheridan Lady Bronc soccer team lost a heart breaker in their first round match of the state high school soccer championships at the Big Horn Equestrian Center yesterday. The Lady Broncs and Laramie played to a scoreless tie in regulation and the match went into overtime. The Lady Broncs scored first but Laramie scored two straight after that to win and advance to the girls semi finals. The Lady Broncs will play Cody at 11:30 for the right to play in tomorrow’s consolation final. Other teams advancing to the semi finals are both Casper Natrona and Kelly Walsh along with Cheyenne East and Laramie for the boys. Teams advancing yesterday included Kelly Walsh, Gillette, Rocks Springs and Cheyenne East. The four girls matches will be played this morning ending with a semi final match at noon and all the boys matches will take place this afternoon. The championship matches are scheduled for 1 and 3 o’clock tomorrow afternoon.

The state track and field championships got underway yesterday. The Sheridan Broncs are in 9th place overall. The Broncs points came from a 6th place finish in the 3200 meter relay and Ben Soukup won his 110 meter hurdle prelim. The Lady Broncs are in 10th place. Points came from Jamie Freeman in the 100 hurdles, and 8th place finish in the 3200-meter relay. Shelly Forbes was 8th in the 3200 meters and Jessica Horsley was 8th in the shot put.

In the class 2-A the Big Horn rams are in 8th place and the Lady Rams are also in 8th place. The Tongue River Lady Eagles are in 13th place in the class 1-A. The NSI boys are in 5th place. The Tongue River boys and the NSI girls along with the Arvada/Clearmont girls did not score points yesterday but several Sheridan County athletes won’t have events to compete in until today so team scores after the first day don’t mean a whole lot in the overall out come of team titles. That won’t happen until after action ends later today

The spring golf season ends this week for the Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs. Their conference tournament starts today in Cheyenne. The 36 hole event ends tomorrow.

The Sheridan Troopers will play a double header in Billings Sunday afternoon against the Billings Lobos. The next home games for the Troops will be a double header Memorial Day against the Casper Oilers.

The state track and field championships get underway today in Casper and Sheridan County will be well represented over the next three days. 66 Sheridan County athletes will compete in 127 entries. Most of the qualifiers from Sheridan County are competing in multiple events here’s the break down by school:
Sheridan High School has a total of 21 qualifiers
NSI is next with 18 qualifiers
Then Big Horn with 16 qualifiers
Tongue River has 8 total qualifiers
And Arvada/Clearmont has 3 qualifiers.
The meet concludes Saturday afternoon.

The state high school soccer tournament opens today at the Big Horn Equestrian Center. All first round matches are single elimination. The Lady Broncs play Laramie at 11:30. Matches tomorrow will be the girls at 9am, 9:30, 11:30 and noon. The boys matches will go tomorrow at 2 pm, 2:30, 4:30 and 5 Friday’s semi finals will be at 9:30 and neon for the girls and 2:30 and 5 pm for the boys. On Saturday the Girls consolation game will be played at 11 am with the boys at 11:30. The girls state title match will be at 1 o’clock with the boys title match at 3 o’clock.

The spring high school golf season ends today and tomorrow at the regional tournament in Cheyenne. Both the Broncs and Lady Broncs will compete. Both teams are coming off victories in last weeks Sheridan Invitational.

The University of Wyoming Cowboy Joe Club’s spring and summer golf series are making the rounds in our region this week and on June 4th the Annual Mike Phillips Memorial Cowboy Joe Golf Tournament will be played at The Powder Horn. The Mike Phillips Memorial event has become the most popular tournament in the Cowboy Joe Golf Series and early registration is highly recommended so you can insure your team can get in. Proceeds from this tournament go to the Mike Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund for student athletes at the University of Wyoming. Phillips played for the Cowboys during his college playing days. The Cowboy golf team and coaches will play in the event as well at other University of Wyoming athletic personnel. The tournament again will be played on Saturday June 4th. It’s a four person team scramble, play begins at 8 am. Following play the Cowboy Joe Club hosts a barbecue for all the players. To register your team contact Wyoming Cowboy Joe at 766-6242. This week the Cowboy Joe Club is hosting other series tournaments in Spearfish South Dakota, Gillette and tomorrow’s event in Buffalo.

In other golf notes, today is men’s day at Kendrick Golf Course and tomorrow men’s league play begins at the Sheridan Country Club. Friday and Saturday the Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc golf teams will end their spring season playing at their conference tournament in Cheyenne.

The state high school state track and field championships open tomorrow in Casper and the state high school soccer championships will open tomorrow at the Big Horn Equestrian Center. The Sheridan Lady Broncs open the tournament tomorrow morning at 11:30 against Laramie on field one.

The Sheridan Troopers are 1-3 overall and will play a double header in Billings Sunday against the Billings Lobos. The next home games for the Troopers will be on Memorial Day when they host a double header with the Casper Oilers.

The Sheridan Troopers resume their schedule Sunday with a trip to Billings to take on the Billings Lobos. Their next home games will be on Memorial Day with their traditional Memorial Day opponent Casper. The Troops picked up their first win Sunday when they split a double header with Miles City Montana. The weather the past few weeks has made it tough to get ready to play these games and head coach John Araas says they are looking forward to getting in some quality work-outs. Araas says they have plenty to work on but, says winning their first game Sunday will really help the players relax.

The Wyoming high school spring sports season ends this weekend with the state track and field championships in Casper, the state soccer championships at the Big Horn Equestrian Center and the high school golf conference tournament in Cheyenne.

The all- class state track meet opens Thursday morning at Casper Kelly Walsh High School

The state soccer tournament will open Thursday at the Big Horn Equestrian Center. The Sheridan Lady Broncs open first round play Thursday against Laramie.

The spring golf season ends with the two-day conference tournament in Cheyenne Friday and Saturday.

Sheridan Lady Bronc Anya Weschler in Pole Vault

The Sheridan Troopers picked up their first win of the season yesterday when they split a double header with Miles City Montana. Miles City took the opener 7-4 and then took a 4-0 lead after two innings in the second game but then Troopers pitcher Chris Reynolds took the mound in relief and shut down the Mavericks, allowing the Troopers to get back in the game and win it in their final at bat 5-4. Reynolds is the Troops number one starter and was used in relief yesterday. Out of 15 outs that Reynolds had to get 12 were strike-outs. What made Reynolds so tough is that he had command of all his pitches. In their final at bat with the game tied at 4 Andy Loshe walked, Chase Patterson moved him over to second and Micheal Araas ended the game with an RBI single and Head Coach Araas says it was a great way for the players to pick up their first win. This weekend the Troopers will play a double header on the road against the Billings Lobos and will return home for a Memorial Day double header against the Casper Oilers.

In high school soccer regional tournament action the Sheridan Lady Broncs won and advanced to the state tournament while the Broncs were eliminated from the post season. The Broncs lost a 4-3 decision to Worland, which ended the Broncs season Saturday. The Lady Broncs beat Lander 2-1 in their opening match and then played Casper Natrona in a state-seeding match. Natrona took that show down 3-1. The Lady Broncs will open the state tournament Thursday at the Big Horn Equestrian Center against Laramie. The tournament opens Thursday

In track and field regional action the Sheridan Lady Broncs finished 3rd in the north 4-A regional at Sheridan High School Saturday. The Broncs finished in a fourth place tie with Cody. The all-class state track and field championships open Thursday at Casper Kelly Walsh High School.

In golf notes for Saturday the Sheridan Broncs and Lady Broncs had a pretty good day at Kendrick Golf Course as both teams won their own invitational. This week the spring golf season ends with the two-day conference tournament in Cheyenne.

The north 4-a regional track meet will have a new start time this morning. Sheridan High School officials moved the start time up 2 hours so the meet will kickoff at 11 o’clock. The meet will run all day and conclude tomorrow. The northeast 1-A and 2-A regional track meet opens today over in Gillette.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc soccer teams face elimination games tomorrow in the northeast soccer regional tournament over in Gillette. The Lady Broncs play Lander tomorrow at 11 am and the Broncs face Worland at 9 am. If they win they advance to the state tournament seeding games, which will be played in the afternoon and those four teams advance to the state tournament hosted by Sheridan High School next week.

The Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers host the Sheridan Invitational tomorrow at Kendrick Golf Course.

The Sheridan Troopers will host a double header with Miles City Montana Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock at Thorne-Rider Stadium. Tomorrow Troopers Head Coach John Araas will be our guest on breakfast with the coaches. The show is aired live on am 14-10 KWYO tomorrow morning at 8 o’clock.

Sheridan High School Head Track Coach Art Bauers will host a volunteer meeting tonight at Sheridan High School at 6:30. Sheridan High School will host the north 4-A track and field championships tomorrow and Saturday. The meeting was originally set for last night but was cancelled. The meet opens tomorrow and wraps up Saturday. The 1-A and 2-A regional meet will be over in Gillette tomorrow and Saturday.

The state championships open next Thursday in Casper. The state high school soccer regionals will be held Saturday and the Broncs and Lady Broncs have one chance to advance to the state tournament which will be hosted by Sheridan High School next week. The Lady Broncs play Lander at 11 am Saturday and the Broncs open with Worland at 9 am. Winners advance to state tournament-seeding games in the afternoon and the losers season is over.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers will host the Sheridan Invitational at Kendrick Golf Course Saturday morning starting at 9 o’clock.

The Sheridan Troopers will play their home opener Sunday afternoon. The Troops host Miles City Montana in a double header at Thorne-Rider Stadium. The first game will start at 1 o’clock.

Here we go again with the weather becoming the story this week as soccer players and track and field athletes get ready to open their post season events. The north conference soccer regional tournament is scheduled for Saturday in Gillette. Next week the state tournament will be hosted by Sheridan High School and is scheduled to begin next Thursday.

Sheridan High School is also scheduled to host the north 4-a conference track regionals Friday and Saturday. Gillette will host the 1-A and 2-A regional track meet Friday and Saturday for Big Horn, Tongue River, NSI and Arvada/Clearmont.

The Sheridan High School golfers are scheduled to play at an invitational in Gillette today and then host the Sheridan Invitational at Kendrick Golf Course Saturday.

The Sheridan Troopers got rained out last weekend. This week the Troops hope to play Sunday afternoon against Miles City Montana. That double header is scheduled to start at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon.

Club Boxing highlights

The 2005 Wyoming High School Soccer regular season has come to a close with the Sheridan Lady Broncs and Casper Natrona finishing in a 0-0 tie for the second time in two weeks. Now it’s on to the regional tournament in Gillette set for Saturday. Regional qualifiers will play in the state championships hosted by Sheridan High School starting Thursday May 19th.

The 2005 track regular season came to a close Friday at a meet in Gillette. Freshmen Kelly Gariffa qualified for the state meet in the long jump and Brian Bell qualified in the 800 meters a week after qualifying in the 1600 meters. Also at the Gillette meet Anya Wechsler continued to dominate in the pole-vault easily winning the event by almost two feet. The Lady Broncs Jessica Horsely won both the shot put and the discus. Shelly Forbes took the title in the 800 meters. Scott Petite is heading to the regional meet this week after a personal best in the pole-vault at 13’6”. Teammate Carl Hiene finished second in the 1600 meters. This week the north 4-a regional meet will held at Homer Scott Stadium at Sheridan High School Friday and Saturday.

The class 1-A and 2-A regional meet for Big Horn, Tongue River, NSI and Arvada/Clearmont will be over in Gillette this weekend. The all class state championships open May 19th in Casper.

The Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers will compete at an invitational in Gillette tomorrow weather permitting. The Broncs and Lady Broncs are scheduled to host the Sheridan Invitational at Kendrick Golf Course Saturday.

The Sheridan Troopers had their home opener rained out yesterday. No make up date has been Scheduled so next up for the Troops is a home double header Sunday afternoon against Miles City Montana. The first game will start at 1 o’clock.

The Sheridan Bronc soccer team closed out their regular season yesterday with a match at Casper Natrona. The Broncs and Mustangs played 100 minutes of soccer and had to settle for a 0-0 overtime tie. Next up for the Broncs are matches next weekend at the North Regional Tournament in Gillette.

The Lady Broncs close out their season at home tomorrow against Natrona County.
The JV’s will play at 10 o’clock tomorrow morning with the varsity at noon.

The Sheridan High School track teams are competing at an invitational over in Gillette today, that’s their regular season finale. The Broncs and Lady Broncs host the north 4-a regional meet next weekend.

The Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers play at the Powell Invitational today.

This fall and next winter Sheridan High School will have new coaches for the girls and boys swimming and diving programs. Jim Alden has resigned as the Lady Broncs coach and will be leaving Sheridan for Alaska. Alden who is a Sheridan High School graduate and coached the Sheridan High School program for 16 season’s all with the girls and 13 season’s with the boys. Alden also ran the U.S. youth swimming program for Sheridan as well.


Former Sheridan High School track star and current Wyoming Cowgirl Shauna Smith

Former Sheridan High School track star and current Wyoming Cowgirl Shauna Smith has been named the most outstanding women’s athlete by the Drake Relays, which were held, in Des Moines Iowa last weekend. Smith ran the fastest collegiate time in the Country this year in the 400 meter hurdles her time was 55.45 that time was also the fourth fastest in the world this year.

In local track and field notes the Sheridan High School track teams complete their regular season tomorrow at a last chance qualifier in Gillette. The Bronc and Lady Broncs host the north 4-a regional meet next weekend at Homer Scott Stadium.

The high school soccer and track and field regular season’s end this week with regional scheduled for next week. The Sheridan Bronc soccer team closes out their regular season at home Saturday afternoon against Casper Natrona. The varsity match will take place at noon. The Lady Broncs play at Natrona County Saturday next week Gillette hosts the regionals and then all qualifiers advance to the state soccer championships, which will be hosted in Sheridan starting May 19th.

The final track meet of the regular season will be Friday in Gillette. The Bronc and Lady Bronc track teams host the north 4-A regional meet next weekend and Gillette will host the northeast 1-A and 2-A regional. Also next week the all –class state meet starts May 19th in Casper.

The Sheridan Troopers play their home opener Sunday afternoon at Thorne-Rider Stadium. The Troops dropped their season openers Saturday in cold weather in Billings and the weather picture for the rest of the week looks a lot better for baseball this weekend. Sunday’s double-header with the Billings Lobos will start at 1 o’clock.
Araas says they got several things accomplished in Billings Saturday and it was good to see the players respond to the challenge. Araas says the key to the Troopers success this season will be stressing and working hard on the fundamentals.

The Wyoming Track Classic will get underway this afternoon in Casper. It’s an all-class all-star meet with the fastest times and distances in the state this spring competing against one another. The final regular season track meet will be held in Gillette Friday. The 4-A North Regionals will be held in Sheridan May 13th and 14th. The class 1-A and 2-A Northeast Regionals will take place in Gillette. The all- class state championships will be held in Casper opening Thursday May 19th.

The Sheridan Troopers opened up their season Saturday in Billings and dropped both ends of their double header with the Billings Royals. The Troops were short handed with several players in other spring sports missing the games Saturday afternoon. Both teams braved cold temperatures in Billings as the Royals took the opener 7-0 and broke open a 3-3 tie in their final at bat to score 10 runs and win 13-0. Troopers head coach John Araas says even though they lost both games the Troops did pretty well for the first games of the season. For an opener Araas says the improvement they expect to see is encouraging. The Troops play their home opener Sunday afternoon and Araas talks about fine tuning for the opener. The Troopers host the Billings Lobos in a double header Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock.

Cold weekend weather played havoc on the rest of the spring sports. The Buffalo Holf Invitational was cancelled Saturday so the Sheridan Bronc and Lady Bronc golfers hosted an impromptu tournament at Kendrick Golf Course Friday. This week the Broncs and Lady Broncs will play at a tournament in Powell Friday afternoon.

The Wyoming Track Classic was cancelled in Casper Friday because of snow, the meet will be run tomorrow. The meet is an all-star event with the top eight athletes in each event from all classes invited to compete, the meet will be held tomorrow afternoon at Casper Kelly Walsh High School with several athletes from Sheridan County competing.

The Sheridan Lady Bronc soccer team got back on track over the weekend. The Lady Broncs stumbled a bit at a jamboree in Riverton two weeks ago but they came back to beat buffalo Friday 2-0 avenging an earlier lost to the Lady Bison. The Lady Broncs then went over to Gillette Saturday and took that match 2-1. The Lady Broncs close out the regular season with a road match at Casper Natrona Saturday. The regional tournament will be played in Gillette on the 14th and Sheridan will host the state tournament starting on May 19th.

The Broncs dropped both matches against Buffalo and Gillette over the weekend. The Broncs close out the regular season at home Saturday against Casper Natrona.
