Sally Witzel, 76, of Sheridan died peacefully at Sheridan Manor on Tuesday, March 4, 2008, in the company of loving and caring staff members and friends.

She was born in Pasadena, California, on June 15, 1931, and moved to Wyoming at an early age. She attended grade school in a one-room schoolhouse and was the only student in her grade. Sally and her brother, John, would ride horse-back from their home at the Hat Ranch to and from school each day. She then went on to attend The Masters School at Dobbs Ferry, NY. She enrolled in the University of Wyoming in Laramie, was the college rodeo queen in 1951, and graduated with the first nursing class in 1954. She was licensed as a Registered Nurse in August of 1954.

Sally was married to Mr. Noel Justin Hicks on January 4, 1957, in Boston, Massachusetts, and was later divorced. She married Erwin F. "Curley" Witzel on August 18, 1966 in Sheridan, Wyoming, and gave birth to John Sherman Witzel on May 13, 1967. Curley and John were the loves of her life, surrounded by the beautiful menagerie of flowers which she tended professionally. Within six month’s time, she lost Curley to natural causes and John to an automobile accident when he was 21 years old.

Her early hobbies included horse training and riding, rodeo, swimming, photography and skiing. Later in life she enjoyed studying art, music, and became a master gardener, amassing a wide library and knowledge of every flower she could learn and grow. One of the highlights of Sally’s life was a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land in 1994. She was an active member of St. Peter’s Church, taking loving care of the church’s gardens.

Sally lived a very spirited life and endured many losses. Her beautiful smile, quick wit and vivacious laugh will be missed by all who knew her.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Curly Witzel, and their only son, John. Survivors include her younger brother, John Merriman, of Little River, California, and sister, Mary Howie Arena, of Genoa, Italy. She is survived by her nephews, Wyatt Merriman of Pacifica, CA; Todd Merriman of PA; Scott Merriman of Arcata, CA; Paulo Arena and Kelly Arena of Genoa, Italy; her nieces Jeanne Olson of Billings, MT; Jennifer Cazares of Concord, CA; Elizabetta Parodi of Genoa, Italy, and many grand nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church on Monday, March 10, 2008, at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Rev. David Duprey and Rev. John Meyer. Immediately following the ceremony her ashes will be interred in the columbarium of St. Peter’s Memorial Chapel. A reception will be hosted by the Women of St. Peter’s, to which all are invited.

As a living memorial to Sally, her friends and loved ones are asked to give flowers to one another in her name.
