Kenny, as many called him, was born June 18, 1926 in Casper, WY to Earl and Matilda (Lampman) Moye. Kenny spent most of his youth on a small ranch near Spotted Horse, WY. While helping his dad with the families Steeldust Quarter Horses, he learned how to ride well and how to rope calves. He was frequently in the money at local rodeos with his calf roping skills. Kenny joined the Army in September 1944. After basic training he served in the Philippines. By the time he was on furlough, the ranch was sadly gone, along with the horses. Times were tough and the folks needed the money to live on. After his honorable discharge Kenny worked jobs such as ranch work, pushed concrete for construction, oiled a rock crusher, helped mine coal, and worked with hay moving, bailing, stacking, and hauling. He swore his arms were longer because of it. Kenny was proud to say he never herded sheep. He said his father would have approved. Kenny also learned how to fly small planes. He was well on his way to earning his private license and later on, at Fort Lewis, he made it! This adventure would start his love of airplanes. Kenny married June Alden in June 1947. This marriage produced two children, Kerry and Molly. Kenny and June were later divorced. The following year Kenny married Eva Marie Thompson. This marriage produced three children, Kay, infant son Keith Earl, who passed away, and Frederick. Kenny started working at the VA Hospital pushing a broom and mop in the housekeeping department. This job was less demanding than his previous heavy lifting jobs. Kenny had this job for 9 ½ years and during this time he enlisted in the Army National Guard. In 1969, when an air opening became available in Gillette, he states he was conned into quitting the VA and working full time with the National Guard. In 1974, Kenny was transferred back to Sheridan and promoted to First Sergeant. He held this position until he accepted the position of Operations Sergeant which he held until his retirement at age 60. After retirement from the National Guard and Civil Service, he started driving a bus for Sheridan Senior Center in 1987. He retired from this job in May 1996 and enjoyed his full retirement. During Kenny’s military career he received many awards. In 1980, he received the Bronze Star. Kenny received the Legion of Merit award in 1986 upon his retirement from the National Guard. This is the highest award given in the military during peace time. In 1993, Kenny received the Ancient Order of Saint Barbara. This honorary society recognizes those who have performed long term exceptionally conspicuous service on behalf of the field artillery. Kenny spent many hours tinkering. Besides building model airplanes, he was always inventing useful projects. One of his most well known inventions was a bracket hand wench for a one man hitch up of a 155 mm howitzer. Kenny enjoyed the outdoors. He hunted and fished. He also loved anything to do with airplanes. He finally earned his real wings. We’ll miss his charm and personality, but most of all, his wonderful smile.
