Bill E. Archer, 70, of Story, passed away on November 26, 2007, at the historical Fort Mackenzie VA Medical Center in Sheridan, Wyoming.

Bill was born July 31, 1937 in Sheridan to Lloyd and Elsie (Walker) Archer. He attended school in Story and Sheridan and went on to graduate from the University of Minnesota. He served in the armed forces during the Korean conflict and married Constance Schaefer in Sheridan on July 6, 1962, they raised four children together. Bill and Connie returned to live in his beloved Big Horn Mountains in 1995. He enjoyed hunting , fishing, playing his mandolin and guitar and especially spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife Connie; son John of Rice Lake, Wisconsin, three daughters, Jacqueline Lowry of Clear Lake, Iowa , Michelle (Jon) Engum of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, Geraldine (Dave) Larson of River Falls, Wisconsin. Five grandchildren, Joslyn, Mackenzie, Adrienne, Cooper and Victor. Sister Dorothy Terry of Gillette, Wyoming and brother Floyd Archer of Belvidere, Tennessee. Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Cliff and Bud.

A Memorial Service will be will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, November 30, 2007 at the Story Woman's Club in Story, Wyoming with The Reverend Tom Ogg officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements for the family.

The family has requested memorials be made in Bill's name to the Story Woman's Club or the Story Centennial Museum.


Anna N. Arnieri, age 89, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, November 11, 2007, in Sheridan Manor.

Anna was born November 10, 1918, in Kleenburn, WY to Luigi and Mary (Gavita) Arnieri.

Anna grew up in Kleenburn and graduated from Sheridan High School.  She worked at the V.A. Medical Center for over 30 years in Dietetic Services until she retired.  Anna was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church.  She enjoyed making homemade noodles and fruitcake for the holidays.

Anna was preceded in death by two brothers Harry and Joe Arnieri and two sisters Rose Green and Jean Springer.

Anna is survived by her sister Mary Smith of Sheridan and numerous special nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be from 10:00am until 4:00pm on Tuesday (Nov. 13th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral Liturgy will be 10:00am on Wednesday from Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit the Donor’ Choice.


Dr. Adelaida A. Caroll, 90, of Sheridan, passed away on November 23, 2007, at Sheridan Manor.

Adelaida was born in Pinar del Rio, Cuba, on August 9, 1917, to Ceferino and Alicia (Carreras) Jimenez-Rojo. She married Dr. Servio Caroll in Havana on December 17, 1944. Adelaidaearned a Doctor of Pharmacy in 1940, and dedicated her professional career to working with infectious diseases in the laboratory and later as director. She was a master seamstress, designing and sewing clothing for herself and the family. She studied piano at a Conservatory, becoming a master pianist and teacher. A strong anti-communist, she participated in the anti-Castro underground at every opportunity. She sent her son to live in the United States after the Bay of Pigs invasion failed; to protect him from the Castro regime. She and Servio, Sr. traded all of their life’s goods and possessions for freedom, and to be with their son in 1980, when they were allowed to leave Cuba, and moved to Sheridan.

Adelaida was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant great-grandson, Reece Gale. She is survived by her son, Servio (Mary) A. Carroll of Sheridan; her grandchildren, Wendy (John) Gale and Kelly Carroll, both of Sheridan, Shea Steingass -Carroll of Laramie, a great grandson, Ian Gale; and her brother, Dr. Oscar J. Rojo.

Cremation has taken place and memorial Services will be at 4:00 pm on Tuesday, November 27th at St. Peters’ Episcopal Church with Father David Duprey officiating. Kane Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Memorials in Adelaida’s name may be made to the Shriner’s Travel Fund, 145 West Loucks, Sheridan, WY 82801.


Loa Carpenter, 72, of Sheridan, passed away on November 23, 2007 at Sheridan Manor after a long illness.

Loa was born on October 30, 1935 , to Nathan and Lettie Pierce. She came into this life early during a snow storm and was not expected to make it through the night. The doctor placed her in a shoe box and waited for morning. She not only made it through the night but 72 years and 23 days. She was the oldest of seven children. She often told stories of making clothes or helping to care for her younger siblings. She trained with the Catholic sisters to work at the hospital while in high school. After high school she went to Western Montana College of Education in Dillon, MT and received her teaching degree. Her first teaching job was in White Sulphur Springs, MT where she met her husband, Bruce Carpenter. They were married in St. Ignatius, MT on May 30, 1956. They had four children, three girls and one boy. Loa had 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandkids. Besides being a wife, mother, and teacher she worked many different occupations, such as cooked for ranch crews, substitute taught, Yellowstone Park employee, headstart teacher, nurses aid, and managed the parts department at Montgomery Wards. She also was a past president of Big Goose Women’s Club, 4-H leader, cowbells leader, camp fire girl leader, and girls camp cook

Loa was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband, Bruce of Sheridan; her 3 daughters, Loa Marie Francis and her husband Bill of Cut Off, LA, Marcella Ring and her husband Scott of Evanston, WY, and Gerry Smith and her husband Gary of Texarkana, AR; and her son Charles Bruce and his wife Lissa of Sheridan.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop John Slaughter officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


Nelda Mae Carroll, 84 of Sheridan passed away on Monday, November 12, 2007 at her residence surrounded by her family.

Nelda was born on May 1, 1923 in Sheridan to Lucille (Kegerreis) and Hanney G. Olson. She attended Whitney Grade School at Meade Creek and later graduated from Sheridan High School with the class of ‘41. During World War II, Nelda was enrolled in the nursing program at Montana State University, Bozeman and also attended the University of Utah where she was affiliated with the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was united in marriage to William B. Carroll on January 2, 1947 at the First Baptist Church of Sheridan. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sheridan, the Women’s Missionary Society, Chapter T PEO, served as regent with the Sheridan chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Memorial Hospital Auxillary Board, was chairman of the Girl Scout Cookie Drive and participated in the Linden School Throat Culture Program. Nelda enjoyed spending time with her family, playing golf, reading American Indian history, painting,knitting and following politics.

Nelda was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter, Mary Ann Carroll Taylor. She is survived by her husband, William; her daughters and their husbands, Jane Carroll, of Denver, CO, Catherine (Vali) Kiaie of Milwaukee, WI, Patricia (Ron) Prestfeldt and Margaret (Curt) Sare both of Sheridan, WY; two sisters, Martha Baker, of Tucson, AZ and Duretta Vestal of Salinas, CA. Nelda also is survived by her eleven grandchildren, Barbara (Jim) Benepe, Cassie Prestfeldt, and A.J. Sare all of Sheridan, Jonathan (Christine) Marshman, Levi (Keli) Sare and Whitney Sare all of Florida, Jessica Marshman of Colorado, Ernie Taylor III and Will Taylor, both of Oklahoma, Sarra and Alex Kiaie of Wisconsin; and four great-grand children, Amanda Benepe of Sheridan and Jordan Marshman, Jada Poteat and Logan Sare all of Florida.

Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, November 20, 2007 at 10:00 AM at the new First Baptist Church of Sheridan with Pastor Ken Doolin officiating.

Memorials may be made in Nelda’s name to the First Baptist Church at 3179 Big Horn Ave. Sheridan, WY or The Hospice of the Big Horns at 1401 W. Fifth ST. Sheridan, WY 82801. Kane funeral Home is handling the service arrangements.


Jack Lewis Cotton, 78, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, November 13, 2007 in the Sheridan V. A. Medical Center.

Mr. Cotton was born September 22, 1929 in Sheridan, WY to George L. and Edna Mae (Swinger) Cotton.  He grew up in the Sheridan area, attending Beaver Creek School, Beckton School, and Big Goose School.

Jack was a veteran of both the Army and Navy during the Korean War. 
While in the service, he married Asako Cotton in Japan in 1960, and they had three children.  They were later divorced.  During his time in the service, Jack was in charge of a mule team squad, was a cook, and a boxer.

  Jack married Pearl Boalden in 1970 in Missoula, MT.  She died in 1994, and Jack moved back to Sheridan.  He was a ranch-hand & cowboy in Montana and Wyoming, and worked in body shops in Sheridan and Montana.

Mr. Cotton was a member of the Eagles and American Legion, enjoyed fishing, hunting, and doing mechanic work on vehicles.

Jack was preceded in death by his wife, Pearl; his parents; one brother; and one sister.

He is survived by one son, Patrick Cotton, of Denver, CO; two daughters, Val Regan, of Denver, CO, and Sheila Cybyski, of Seattle, WA; one brother, George Jerry Cotton, of Sheridan, WY; one sister, Ruth Elaine Deutsch, of Sheridan, WY; 6 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will be in the Black Hills National Cemetery at Sturgis, S.
D.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. 


Ramona Hininger, 76, of Sheridan passed away on Sunday, November 18, 2007 at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Ramona was born on January 9, 1931 in Clinton, OK to Herbert and Mary Nabors. After graduating in 1949 from Cowden High School in Oklahoma Ramona entered beauty school and had been a working beautician until last year. She married J.R. Hininger on August 9, 1954. Ramona enjoyed playing bridge, gardening, playing cards with the grandkids. She also enjoyed many years of square dancing. One of Ramona’s favorite things was spending time with family.

Ramona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, and her grandson, Matthew Hininger; She is survived by her son, Scott Hininger of Sheridan; her daughter, Mary Jo Hutton of Gillette, WY; her four grandchildren, Jen Shannon of Germany, Sean Rubidge of Billings, MT, Luke Hininger of Laramie, WY, and John Hininger of Rapid City, SD; her great-grandchildren, Braydon and Morgan Shannon of Germany and soon to be Kagen Shannon; and her brothers, Loyd Nabors and his wife, Mae of Cordell, OK, Gerald Nabors and his wife Raedell of Cordell, OK, and Bobby Nabors and his wife Ruth of Oklahoma City, OK.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, November 24 at the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Don Derryberry officiating. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Kane funeral Home is handling the service arrangements.

Bobbie Joe Johnson, 75, of Sheridan, passed away on November 25, 2007 at the VAMC in Denver, CO.

Bobbie was born in Paris, TN on March 17, 1932 to Brent and Minnie Johnson. He enlisted in the Air Force and served from 1949 until his honorable discharge in 1953 with service in Korea. Bobbie later enlisted in the Army during the Vietnam War where he served from 1965-1967. For his honorable military service Bobbie was awarded the Purple Heart, 27 air medals, Good Conduct Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal for his service in Vietnam. Bobbie worked as a police officer in Roseberg, OR from 1955-1962 and was a self-employed pilot in Paris, TN from 1967-1983. He married Nancy Wilson in El Paso, TX on November 20, 1986, the couple moved to Sheridan in 1988. Up until his death Bobbie was the caretaker of the Sheridan County Sportsman Association. He enjoyed the outdoors, including hunting and fishing and was a member of the VFW, DAV, and the First Baptist Church.

Bobbie was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Nancy of Sheridan; his daughter, Sherree Johnson of Paris, TN; his son, Brent Johnson of Courtland, NY; his step-children, Judy Efaw of El Paso, TX, Keli Ladd of Syracuse, NY, Lori Springer of Grover Beach, CA; and Ronnie Ward of Paris, TN; his nine grandchildren; and his sister, Mary Miclean of West Palm Beach, FL.

Graveside services with military honors will be held in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery on Friday, November 30, 2007 at 10:00 am with a memorial service to follow at 11:00 am at the First Baptist Church with pastor Ken Doolin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mary Matejovitz, 93, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, November 5, 2007 in Westview Health Care Center.

Mrs. Matejovitz was born March 24, 1914 in Kooi, WY to Joseph and Frances (Mates) Matejovitz.  She married Louis Matejovitz November 20, 1932 in Monarch, WY.  Mrs. Matejovitz was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and the Burlington Northern Railroad Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother; and three sisters.

Mrs. Matejovitz is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Louise Mae Roush, of Pueblo West, CO; four grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; and 5 great, great grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mrs. Matejovitz will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. 

The family wishes to thank the staff at Westview Health Care Center for the care that they gave Mrs. Matejovitz.


Katherine Martini Reed, age 94, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, November 1, 2007 in  Sheridan Manor.

Katherine was born to George & Caroline (Oberbach) Smith on September 25, 1913. Her birth took place in a rock house on Tongue River. This home is still located there. She attended school at Piney, and later attended school on Murphy Gulch where the family built a home in 1922. In 1928 she attended one year of high school in Gillette, while living with her sister. She finished her high school years in Sheridan while working for Dr. Veach for room and board. Katherine acquired her Normal Training certificate through a postgraduate program and taught all eight grades in a one room school house on Murphy Gulch in 1934 through 1935, earning $50 a month.

Katherine married Henry E. “Hank” Martini in Billings Montana on May 19, 1934.
They had five children, Jean, Joan, Judy, James (Moe) and Jerry. Hank passed away
on December 29 1971.Katherine later married Harold Reed on December 8, 1985. Mr.
Reed passed away on December 29, 1995.

Katherine was an active member in the First Christian Church since 1943. She
was a member of the Odd Fellows, Eagles, Homemakers, Good Sam’s RV Club and did
volunteer work at the hospital and the senior center.

Katherine enjoyed gardening, being active in her church, volunteer work, TV game
shows, crossword puzzles, writing in her daily journal, reading the bible on a
daily basis, and spending time with her family.

Katherine is preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, 2 brothers, 3
sisters, her son Moe Martini, daughter Jean Bennett, grandsons Michael & Steve
Bennett and Jimmy & Jason Martini.

Survivors include her daughters Joan Taylor of Yuma AZ, Judy Lawrence of Greenfield MO, her son Jerry Martini of Sheridan WY, her sister Dorothy Anderson of Olympia WA, 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Thursday (Nov. 8th) from First Christian Church with Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit First Christian Church.


James E. "Dick" McKenzie, 83, Sheridan passed away at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County on November 20, 2007.

James was born in Sayle, MT on September 10, 1924 to Frank and Kate McKenzie. He married Betty J. French in Hardin, MT on December 30, 1946. He lived his life as a rancher and cattle and horses were the love of his life.

James was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters and a brother; his son, James E. McKenzie Jr; and his grandson, Wayne McKenzie. He is survived by his wife, Betty of 61 years; his sons, Chuck McKenzie and his wife Patty of Gillette and Rich McKenzie and his wife Sheryle of Sheridan; his five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and three sisters and three brothers.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Monday, November 26, 2007 at 2:00 pm. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Dick’s name to the Big Horn Women’s Club or to the Mt. Hope Cemetery Fund.


Dorothy M. Pedulla, 87, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, November 23, 2007 in Sheridan Manor. 

Mrs. Pedulla was born August 30, 1920 in Sheridan, WY to Jett and Carrie (Nelson) Swinyer.  She grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1939. 

Dorothy married Roco Pedulla July 16, 1939 in Hardin, Montana.  She worked at Holly Sugar Factory, National Coil Company, and XL Tire Company as a bookkeeper.

Mrs. Pedulla was a member of the Eagle’s Auxiliary.  She loved to hunt and fish, and especially loved spending time at their cabin in the Big Horn Mountains.  She also loved to dance, and was an excellent “Jitterbugger” in her younger years.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, and one daughter.

She is survived by one daughter, Loyola Kiefling, of Jackson, WY; four grandchildren; one great grandchild; and one niece, Rudy McNair, who took extra special care of her Aunt Dorothy.

No services are planned.  Champion Ferries Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. 


Gaylord M. Richardson, age 72, of Sheridan, WY, formerly of Platteville, CO died Monday, November 19, 2007, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan.

Gaylord was born February 5, 1935, in Crab Orchard, Nebraska to Charles & Gwendolyn (Anderson) Richardson.

The Richardson family moved to Colorado when Gaylord was young.  He grew up and graduated from high school in Platteville.  He married Shirlee Reed in December, 1953, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1953 to 1957.  After the service, he returned to Platteville where he farmed, milked cows, hauled equipment and pulled trailer houses.  In 1968, he divorced.  In 1969, he married Shirley Mullings.  In 1986, he divorced.  He continued to farm and ranch until the late 1990’s when he moved to Mason, TX with his significant other Susan (Schell) Richardson.  In 2000, came to Sheridan to be with his son and daughter-in-law Kerry & Abbie Richardson.  In 2001, he divorced.  Gaylord was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 6011.  He enjoyed farming, ranching, good horses, hunting, fishing and the outdoors.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Gaylord is survived by his sons Kerry Richardson, Tim Richardson, Bill Cress, Frank Cress, Bob Cress, Wade Schell, daughters Gayla (Richardson) Norgren, Kelly (Schell) Barnes, brother Bruce Richardson, eighteen grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Saturday (Nov. 24th) from First United Methodist Church, Platteville, CO.  Interment will be in Platteville Mizpah Cemetery.  Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Keith Burton Salmonson, 86, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, November 19, 2007 in Wesview Health Care Center.

Mr. Salmonson was born July 26, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan to Albe and Christina (Scholberg) Salmonson.

He grew up and attended schools in Dearborn, Michigan and graduated from Michigan Agricultural College in Dearborn in 1946.

Mr. Salmonson was a veteran of the Merchant Marines.

He married Carol Potee in 1946 in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and she preceded him in death in 1995.  Mr. Salmonson married Carolyn Watt in Junction City, Oregon in 1999, and she preceded him in death in 2005.

Mr. Salmonson was a missionary all of his adult life, associated with the Agricultural Missionary, the Peace Corps in Ecuador, South America, (the Heifer Project), and was an Administrative Assistant in the Biology Department at the University of Oregon at Eugene, Oregon.  He was also an organic farmer, a senior companion, and was in missions.

Keith was a member of the Jewish Voice Ministry, the Marilyn Hickey Ministry, the Benny Hinn Ministry, Messianic Vision, Global Prayer Digest, Jerusalem Prayer Team, and Open Doors, U.S.A.  He was also a member of the American Legion.

Mr. Salmonson enjoyed gardening, singing, traveling and all sports, particularly football, basketball, and baseball.  His main interest, however, was the Unity in the Body of Christ, the church, and being involved in the churches of Sheridan.

Keith was preceded in death by his parents; and his two wives.  He is survived by one son,  Loren Kjell Salmonson, of Winston-Salem, NC; two daughters, Rachel Lynne Salmonson, of Winston-Salem, NC, and Heidi Jo Salmonson, of Fairfield, IA; two sisters, Carol Mills, of Plymouth, Michigan, and Sally Warner, of Traverse City, Michigan; and 5 grandchildren.

A memorial service for Mr. Salmonson will be held at Bethesda Worship Center at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. 

Memorials in memory of Mr. Salmonson may be made to “Open Doors” in California, or the Oasis of Love Ministry Outreach, Sheridan, WY. 


Sylvia J. Smith, 70, of Sheridan, passed away on November 27, 2007, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County after a long and brave battle with cancer.

A viewing will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Friday, November 30, 2007 from 5 pm until 7 pm. Funeral services will be held at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, WV with interment taking place in her hometown of Rich Creek, Virginia on December 4, 2007.

Sylvia was born in Arista, West Virginia on December 4, 1936 in to Dennis and Maycil Wiley. She married Robert C. Smith on August 5, 1978 while he was stationed in the Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. She spent the next fifteen years traveling and living around the world as a military spouse. She moved to Sheridan, her husband’s hometown, in 1993 when he retired from the Army. Sylvia had many jobs as she moved around including Assistant Commissary manager, Credit Union manager, and most recently Sheridan manager and driver for Express Shuttle. This most recent job brought much joy to her life as she thoroughly loved driving and the friendship she gained with her fellow drivers and the Railroad employees. She loved camping, fishing, bingo, and of course the occasional trip to Deadwood.

Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; and a brother, Larry E. Wiley. Survivors include her husband; a sister, Lois Wiley of Rich Creek, VA; two brothers, Dennis Wiley of Rich Creek, VA and Jerry Wiley of Mullens, WV; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Sylvia dearly loved all animals so donations may be made in Sylvia’s name to the Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 East Ridge Road, Sheridan, WY 82801.

Alan Steven, 54, of Sheridan passed away on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

Alan was born on November 29, 1952 in Los Angeles, CA to George and Evelyn Steven. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in Sun Valley, CA. Alan enlisted in the United States Air Force where he was stationed at Edwards Air Force Base and Travis Air Force Base from 1972 until his honorable discharge in 1980. While in the Air Force Alan was on the jet maintenance crew. He loved his tow truck operation and enjoyed building car and airplane models.

Alan was preceded in death by his father, George Steven. He is survived by his children, Carrie Steven of S.D. and A.J. Steven of Sheridan, WY; his mother, Evelyn Steven of Ft. Wayne, IN; his siblings, Garry Steven of Banner, WY, Sandy Rue and her husband Tim of Ft. Wayne, IN, Kevin Steven and his wife Patty of Sylmar, CA, and Greg Steven and his wife Sarah of Ft. Wayne, IN.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at Four Square Gospel Church on Sunday, November 18, 2007 at 3:00 pm.

Mary Louise Tanner, 85, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, November 27, 2007 in Sheridan Manor.

Mrs. Tanner was born July 9, 1922 in Ada, OK to Delbert and Inez (Wallace) Lambert.  She moved with her parents to Escondido, CA when she was very young.  Mary grew up and attended schools in Escondido.

 She married Robert L. Tanner March 22, 1939 in Escondido.  Mary was a homemaker and did housekeeping for numerous families in the Escondido area.  Mr. Tanner died in 1978, and Mary moved to Sheridan in 1985 to be near her family.

Mrs. Tanner was a member of Bethesda Worship Center in Sheridan.  She loved her flower garden, painting pictures, doing crafts, and made numerous afghans for her family.  Her greatest joy was her religion and spending time with family.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother; and one granddaughter. 

She is survived by two sons, William L. Tanner, of Phoenix, AZ, and Robert L. Tanner, of Midland, MI; three daughters, Opal Campbell, of Midland, MI, Carol Leining, of Marlin, TX, and Betty Hahn, of Sheridan, WY; one sister, Betty A. Kurtz, of Escondido, CA; 16 grandchildren; 35 great grandchildren; and 5 great, great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service for Mrs. Tanner will be held at Bethesda Worship Center at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


Carl “Kelly” Weber, a longtime area resident of Sheridan, WY passed away Sunday, November 18, 2007, in Sheridan Manor.

Kelly was born August 2, 1911, in Russia to Christian and Anna Marie (Eckert) Weber.  He arrived in America on September 8, 1913 with his mother and two older brothers where they joined his father in Nebraska.  The family lived in Lincoln until the death of his mother in 1927.  At that time his father and six children moved to Clearmont, WY.  Kelly lived in Wyoming, where he and his father first farmed and ranched together, the remainder of his life.  Kelly married Kathryne V. Garretson on November 17, 1934, in Hardin, MT.  Later they purchased the Ranger Bar in Clearmont.  In 1969, he sold the business and they moved into Sheridan.  Kelly was a bartender at the Golden Steer and then managed the Mint Bar until he retired.  But he didn’t retire!  Kelly and Kathryne took on the custodial duties at the First Interstate Bank on Coffeen Avenue for several years.  Kelly enjoyed camping, hunting and fishing all through his life.  He was surrounded with friends and family who enjoyed the same and many of them enabled Kelly to participate in these pastimes long past the age when he could have without help.  His family is more than grateful to those who made Kelly happy and unforgotten throughout his last years.

Kelly was preceded in death by his wife in 1992, his parents, three brothers, two sisters and granddaughter Kelli Suzanne Caldwell.

Kelly is survived by his three children Mary Alice Caldwell & husband Bill of Meridian, Idaho, John Carl Weber of Buffalo, WY and Mark Kelly Weber & wife Linda of Sheridan, brother Henry “Hiney” Weber of Casper, WY, grandchildren Robert Kelly Weber of Sheridan, R. Craig Caldwell of Boise, Idaho and Jodi Kay Caldwell Moore of Armidale, Australia, great grandchildren Alex Jacob Blu, Kirby Justice and Gracen Liberty Moore.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Friday (Nov. 23rd) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Elks Section.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit the First Christian Church or the Donor’s Choice.


Terry Weiss, 41, formerly of Sheridan, passed away on November 6, 2007 in Evanston, WY.

Terry was born in Murdo, SD on September 2, 1966 to Richard and Carol Weiss. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Norris, SD and was confirmed at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Hot Springs, SD. He graduated at the top of his high school class then joined the Army in 1985 in Fort Benning, GA and served until his honorable discharge. Terry enjoyed traveling, books, cars, movies, and spending time with children.

Terry was preceded in death by his grandparents and two uncles. He is survived by his parents, Richard and Carol Weiss of Dayton, WY; his two sisters, Michelle Garhart of Newcastle, WY and Kathy Bettcher of Sheridan; and his two nieces and one nephew..

Memorial services will be held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor William Heine officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements.


Margaret June “Maggie” Zowada, age 65, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, November 11, 2007, in Westview Health Care Center from complications of Diabetes.

Maggie was born September 13, 1942, in Lewistown, MT, to Emil & Dorothy (Foster) Landa.

She was raised on a wheat farm near Helger, MT where she developed her love of animals.  In the mid 1950’s, her family moved to Roy, MT where she graduated from High School.  After graduation, she moved to Sheridan where she met and then married Thomas Arizona.  She gave birth to a beautiful baby boy named Thomas.  After the death of her husband Thomas, she started working in housekeeping at the V.A. Medical Center where she met Alben Zowada.  They were married on June 10, 1967.  She retired from the V.A. in 1996.  After her retirement, she became a carrier for the Billings Gazette for a time.  She was a member of the VFW, Eagles Auxiliaries and the B. P. O. Does.  Maggie had a great sense of humor and loved doing practical jokes.

She is also preceded in death by her parents, son Thomas, sister Dorothy Ann Steinke, nephew Rodney Sand and great nephew Roger Lee Sand.

She is survived by her husband of forty years Alben Zowada of Sheridan, brother Edward Landa of Temple, TX and numerous nieces and nephews

Viewing will be from 11:00am until 4:00pm on Thursday (Nov. 15th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 11:00am on Friday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery.
