Steven Bennett, 44, of Sheridan passed away on Thursday, December 7, 2006 at his residence

Steve was born on October 9, 1962, to William and Jean (Martini) in Sheridan. He graduated from Newcastle High School in 1981. For the past fifteen years Steve was employed by Plains Tire and Battery. He enjoyed NASCAR, playing pool and dartball, and bowling.

Steve was preceded in death by his mother, Jean; and his brother, Mike. He is survived by his father, William and his wife Judy of Sheridan; his two brothers, John of Sheridan and Rob of Green Bay, WI; two step-sisters, Christy of Santa Rosa, CA and Sheryl of Coeur d’Alene, ID and his four nephews.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at First Christian Church on Friday, December 15, 2006 at 10:00 am with Pastor Doug Goodwin officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Shawn D. Brown, 29, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, December 8, 2006 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital from injuries received in an automobile accident.

Shawn was born October 14, 1977 in Cheyenne, WY to Roy Taylor and Rhonda Brown.  He grew up in Cheyenne, Sheridan, and other towns around Wyoming before graduating from Cheyenne High School Three in 1995.

He married Lily Harris in Cheyenne, Wyoming in August of 1997.  They divorced in August of 1999.

Shawn worked methane wells for Bronco Drilling, then changed jobs, driving truck for IPG in March of 2006 until a motorcycle accident in May of 2006.  Shawn returned to work in October of 2006 working for Mister Well Service.

Shawn loved watching the Denver Bronco with his family and friends, but he especially loved spending time with his children whom he loved dearly.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Christina Brown.

Shawn is survived by his companion, Amanda Mills and her three children, Patrick, Jeffery, and Jamison, all of Sheridan, WY; his mother, Rhonda Brown, of Stanford, KY; two sons, Mason T. Brown, of Cheyenne, WY, and Dakota D. Brown, of Ranchester, WY; one daughter, Christina R. Brown, of Sheridan, WY; and one brother, Carl Wickline and his wife, Sherry, of Stanford, KY; his grandmother, Gloria Buckner, of Stanford, KY; and his grandfather, Edward Brown, of Murray, TN.

Funeral service for Shawn will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Shawn may be made to the Shawn Brown children’s education fund, in care of Tara Keep, First Federal Savings Bank, 46 W. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY  82801


David H. Carter, 62, of Sheridan, passed away on Friday, December 22, 2006, at the Sheridan VA Medical Center.

David was born on August 4, 1944, in Sheridan to Harland "Slim" and Kathryn Carter. He completed his highschool education in Grand Junction, CO. He then enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam during the mid 60's. While there he was injured and received a purple heart. He spent many years in Louisiana working on an off shore oil platform. David moved back to Sheridan a few years ago. He has been ill for many years and will be missed.

David is survived by his mother, Kathryn Carter Brown; his two brothers, Richard and Ronald; and his sister, Christine.

For those wishing to pay their respects a visitation will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Friday , December 29, 2006 from 1:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


W. Ferne Cook, 90, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, December 23, 2006 in Westview Health Care Center.

Mrs. Cook was born November 21, 1916 in Bronte, Coke County, Texas to Drewery Fredrick and Josie Lee (Thompson) Pruitt.  She grew up and attended schools in Rush Springs, Oklahoma and graduated from Rush Springs High School.

She married Cecil L. Cook January 23, 1937 in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. The couple lived in the Houston, Texas area until they moved to Casper, WY in June of 1952.  They moved to Denver, CO in June of 1965, and Mrs. Cook moved to Sheridan, WY in June of 2000.

Mrs. Cook was a very active member of the Church of Christ in Denver and Casper.  She enjoyed music, crafts, and especially loved spending time with her family.  She and her husband enjoyed traveling, and had traveled all over the world.

Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her husband, and one son.

She is survived by one daughter, L. Roxanne Mires, of Sheridan, WY; one brother, Garland Pruitt, of Liberty, Missouri; one sister, Dorothy Vice, of Denver, CO; 6 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and 2 great, great grandchildren.

Graveside service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 29, 2006 at East Lawn Cemetery with Oligner-Hampden Mortuary of Denver, CO in charge of arrangements.  Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Cook may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.


Cynthia S. (Whalen) Guge, 48, of Sheridan passed away at her residence on Saturday, December 2, 2006.

Cindy was born on September 13,. 1958, to Donald E. and Wanda (Banty) Whalen in Elgin, Illinois. She married Joseph Guge on May 3, 1980, in Elgin, Illinois. They had four children.

Cindy enjoyed camping, scrap booking, crafts, home schooling her children and spending time with her grandson. She was a hard worker and an employee of Carl’s IGA for many years before going to work at WalMart in 2000.

Cindy is survived by husband, Joe, her children, Nicholas Guge of Rock Springs, WY; Jason and his wife, Amber Guge of Billings, MT; Abby (Guge) and Chris Vine of Sheridan; and Tyler Guge of Sheridan; her parents and a brother, Reverend Donald & Carol Whalen Jr. of Rock Springs, WY, and one grandchild, Ethan Guge.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at First Church of the Nazarene at 11:00 on Wednesday, December 6, 2006. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sam Hathaway, 55, of Sheridan passed away on Saturday, December 30, 2006 at Sheridan Manor.

Sam was born to Bryant "Pete" and Joy (Hazlet) Hathaway on April 20, 1951 in San Andreas, CA. After graduation he became certified through the Federal Aviation Administration as an airframe and power plant mechanic. Sam spent nine years working for the National Guard as a helicopter mechanic in the 1970's. This employment earned him numerous awards and advancement in a civil commitment. He married Debbie Sands on September 29, 1992 in Virginia City, Nevada and the two later divorced. Sam’s interests ranged from model aircraft to trapshooting to motorcycles as well as being an avid fisherman. He was a very accomplished drummer and played throughout his life. He was bright beyond words and a loving and devoted father, son, and brother. He was loved by all and will be forever missed.

Sam was preceded in death by his father; his grandparents, Robert and Dolly Hathaway and Samuel and Anna Hazlet. He is survived by his former wife and current caregiver, Debbie Hathaway of Sheridan; his children, Robert Hathaway and Ashley Sands-Hathaway both of Sheridan; his mother and stepfather, Joy and James Stone of Merced, CA; his bother, James Stone and his wife KC of Modesto, CA; and his devoted cousins, Chuck Evans of Reno, NV and Karen Powell of Sheridan.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held in Hathaway Pines, CA at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The family extends their deepest appreciation to the Hospice of the Big Horns for their support and guidance. In honor of this the family has requested in lieu of flowers donations be made in Sam’s name to Hospice of the Big Horns, 1401 W. 5th Street, Sheridan, WY 82801.


Lloyd Gray Hess, 76, of Sheridan, passed away on December 3, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Sheridan, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Lloyd was born on July 28, 1930, to Cecil and May Helen (Gray) Hess in Denton, Montana. Lloyd enlisted in the Navy on December 5, 1951, and served during the Korean War. He was an electrician on the U.S.S. Windham Bay. He was honorably discharged on November 8, 1955.

He married Peggy Reed on March 4, 1956, and they had three sons. They ranched and owned their own trucking business in Harlowton, Montana. They later divorced.

On April 27, 1979, he married Bette Reimers. Lloyd worked as a truck driver and then a mechanic for Sheridan County for 16 years. He enjoyed traveling, spending winters in Arizona with Bette, fishing and boating. He was a member of American Legion, Eagles, Elks, and Moose Lodges.

His parents, a brother Francis and son David preceded Lloyd in death. He is survived by his wife, Bette, his sons, Casey Hess of Great Falls, Montana and Timothy (Trish) Hess of Reed Point, Montana, his stepchildren, Bonnie (Dennis) Zowada, Lusk, Wyoming; Timothy (Cindy) Reimers, Colorado Springs, Colorado; Tammy (Mark) Heid of Big Horn, Wyoming, and his brother Cecil (Jean) Hess of Atlanta, Georgia; 17 grandchildren, and 3 great-grand children.

Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of his life will be December 21, 2006, at 2:00pm at the Big Horn Mountain Eagles # 4169 on Commercial Lane in Sheridan. Kane Funeral Home is handling arrangements


Margaret Hillberry, 79, of Sheridan, passed away on Monday, December 26, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Margaret was born on December 15, 1927, in Powell, WY, to John and Evea (Hoisington) Rea. On November 11, 1956 she married Charles Hillberry in Powell and the two later divorced. Margaret enjoyed music and singing, she was also a literature and poetry author as well as an artist.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; and her brother, Tom Rea. She is survived by her three children, Ellen Hepp, and Wanda Huston, of Sheridan and Andy Hillberry of Dryden, MI; her five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and her sister, Jane Snodgrass of Sumner, WA.

A visitation will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, January 3, 2007 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Cremation will follow with memorial services to be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, January 4, 2007, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Don Derryberry officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Clay Joseph Hutchinson, Jr. 80, of Sheridan, passed away on December 29, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Clay was born on January 3, 1926, in Denver, Colorado, to Clay and Helen "Walker" Hutchinson. He grew up in Denver and served in the Coast Guard during World War II. After the war, he attended the University of Colorado where he received a degree in Business.

Clay married Margaret Adams in 1950, in Joplin, Missouri, after which they moved to Georgetown, Colorado, where he worked as a banker until his retirement in 1994. Clay and Margaret retired to Litchfield Park, Arizona, where they both loved to play golf.

Clay was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Margaret. He is survived by his son, Alan Hutchinson of Dayton, two granddaughters, and his sister, Ruth Hutchinson.

Cremation has taken place and services are planned in Litchfield, AZ. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


Waneta Kelly, 66, of Sheridan, formerly of Pierre, SD, passed away on Sunday, December 31, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Waneta was born on August 16, 1940, in Hettinger, ND to Goldie Ione (Stalder) and B. Glenn Brabazon. She went to meet Jesus on December 31, 2006 at the age of 66 years, 4 months, and 15 days. Waneta grew up and attended elementary school at Parker School in rural Lodgepole, SD and graduated from Hettinger High School. She then obtained her teaching certificate from Black Hills State College. Waneta taught at several rural schools in Northwest Parker County and near Gordon, NE. On June 10. 1972 she married Ken Kelly. They lived and worked on numerous ranches in Northwest South Dakota and Northwest Nebraska until they moved to Pierre, SD in 1976. Two sons, Tom and T.J. joined this union. Waneta’s greatest joy was spending time with her family. Grandmas pride and joy includes Tracie Renee, Taylor Thomas, Trenton Bruce, Timber Ann, and Tate Richard of Sheridan, WY and Tannia William of Pierre, SD.

She will be missed by her sons, Tom Kelly and his wife Carrie and family of Sheridan and T.J. Kelly of Sioux Falls, SD and grandson Tannis of Pierre, SD; Her sister, Carol Anderson and her husband Doug of Spearfish, SD; and her nieces Dorothy (Corey) Carlson and family of Aberdeen, SD and Tonya (Chris) Maee and son of Bele Fourche, SD.

Waneta was preceded in death by her parents, Glenn and Ione Brabazon; and both her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Waneta’s life will be held in Fort Pierre, SD at the First Congregational Church on Saturday, January 6, 2006 at 10:00 am with Reverend Norman Jones officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.


Rudolph V. (Rudy) Kawulok, age 52, of Cheyenne, WY died Saturday, December 30, 2006, in Davis Hospice Center, Cheyenne, from cancer.

Rudy was born February 6, 1954, in Sheridan, WY to Frank & Mary (Josefy) Kawulok, Jr.

Rudy attended schools in Worland, Ranchester, Dayton and Sheridan, WY and graduated from Sheridan College.  He was always active in athletic competitions playing, coaching, sponsoring and officiating.  Rudy married Carol Bulkow in 1980.  They later moved to Gillette, WY as he continued his career in radio broadcasting.  He formed and operated his own disco company during the late 70’s and early 80’s.  His quick wit and outgoing personality attracted a loyal following for his entertainment.  Rowdy Rudy was on duty at radio stations and nightclubs in Wyoming, Nebraska and Indiana for many years.  He later turned to the news and marketing sides of the business.  Rudy loved the outdoors, sports of any kind, fishing, his dog and most of all spending time with his family. 

Rudy is survived by his son Vincent of Cheyenne; brother Frank of Sheridan; sister Billie Rawlings of Sheridan; fiancée Cheryl Daems of Cheyenne; step mother Ellen Kawulok; one granddaughter; nieces, nephew, great nieces and great nephews all of Sheridan. 

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Thursday (Jan. 4th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with George Telez officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Theodore "Ted" Kristy, 84, passed away on December 22, 2006, at Sheridan Manor. Ted was born on October 29, 1922, to Peter & Regina Kristy in Dietz, Wyoming. He resided in Downer Addition in Sheridan before moving to Sheridan Manor.

Ted worked at Legerski’s Meat Company for many years until he retired. He enjoyed playing the accordion, watching baseball and football games and going to the Big Horn Mountains and spending time at the Sheridan Senior Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Helen Reed; and his brothers; Joseph "Pete" Kristy, John Kristy , and Stanley Kristy. He is survived by his sister, Theresa M. Rodgers of Martinez, California, and his nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and Memorial Services will be held at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Craig C. O’Brien Sr, age 83, passed away December 16, 2006, at Cheyenne Regional Hospital. He was born on July 6, 1923, in Wall, South Dakota. He grew up in the Sisiton, South Dakota area, and served in the Armed Services from 1943 to 1947.

On November 11, 1957, he married Mary Marie Maynard in Redondo Beach, California where he was working as a painter. Upon moving to the Sheridan area, he worked at several ranches in the area. Craig later married Dennise Willette.

Craig enjoyed fishing, hunting, coon hunting, watching boxing, and spending time with his family.

Craig was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary. He is survived by his wife, Dennise of Midwest, Wyoming, Two daughters, Patsy Crouse and her fiancé Doug Kemp Jr., and Susan O’Brien, all of Midwest; one son, Craig C. O’Brien Jr. And wife Angela of Sheridan; two stepsons, Chester C Burton of Cody and Lawrence Willette of Deer Lodge, Montana; twenty-three grandchildren, several great grandchildren and one special little freind, Bianca, and his sidekick, Robert Stambaugh and his long time friend William Wyatt, all of Midwest.

In lieu of a funeral and in keeping with Craig’s wishes, a celebration of life will be held on Friday, December 22, 2006, at 3:30pm at Kane Funeral Home.

Betty M. Ruff, 86, of Sheridan, passed away on Wednesday, December 27, 2006, at Westview Health Care Center.

Betty was born on April 19, 1920, in Casper, WY to Clifford M. and Marie MacCatherine. She was a graduate of Sheridan High School. She married Kenneth W. Ruff on August 2, 1941, in Sheridan. She was a member of the First Methodist Church where she played in the handbell choir for many years. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Nile. Betty enjoyed knitting and handiwork and loved music and reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, one sister, and one grandson. Survivors include her husband, Kenneth of Sheridan; her daughter, Nancy R. Fowkes of Danville, CA; two sons, David K. Ruff of Sheridan and James B. Ruff of Longmont, CO; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Cremation has taken place and a private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Brian Edward Sterbenz passed away surrounded by his family on December 29, 2006 in Casper, WY after a sudden illness.

Brian was born December 3, 1965, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Frank & Jan (Taylor) Sterbenz.  He grew up and graduated from high school in Nevada, Iowa and received a B. S. Degree in forestry from Iowa State University in 1989.

His first professional forestry jobs were with the U. S. Forest Service in the Leavenworth, WA ranger district.  He was a member of the Entiat Hot Shot Fire Crew from 1991 to 1994.  In 1994, he moved to Alaska where he continued his forestry career in a number of positions with the Alaska Bureau of Land Management.  In 2001, he was named Anchorage District Management Specialist.

An avid outdoorsman, Brian enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing and Alaska’s abundant wildlife.  He loved his prior jobs working as a snow cat driver at Steven’s Pass in Washington and at Glacier Snow Cat Skiing in Alaska.

Brian is survived by two children, Shelby and Connor of Clinton, WA; his wife, Terese of Wasilla, AK; his parents, Frank and Jan Sterbenz, of Sheridan, WY; brother Scott Sterbenz and wife, Charmin, of Grimes, IA; sister Christy Filby and husband, Marc, of Wenatchee, WA; 4 nephews; 2 nieces; and a large extended family in the fire community, Missouri and Vermont.

Funeral service was held at 2:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 2, 2007 from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Thomas Ogg officiating.  Interment was in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Sharon A. Summers, 65, of Sheridan, passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2006, at Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Sharon was born April 21, 1941, in Detroit, Michigan. She married Richard (Dick) L. Summers in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 1961. Sharon and Dick are the parents of two children, Sam T. Summers of Sheridan, and Suzanne Gillum of Gillette. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother. Sharon is survived by her husband, Dick; her son, Sam T. Summers and wife Hillary of Sheridan, her daughter, Suzanne Gillum and her husband, Jerry, of Gillette, and her granddaughters, Jessie and Jamie Gillum, one sister, Uldine Henricks and family of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Funeral services will be held on December 29, 2006, at 10:30 am, at Kane Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery.

David E. Walker, 56, of Sheridan passed away at Westview Healthcare Center on Saturday, December 2, 2006.

David was born in St. Louis, MO on September 9, 1950, to Harvey Walker Jr. and Margaret (Avey) Walker..

David married Deborah Carroll in 1979. She passed away and David later married Tannis Hendrickson in Sheridan.

David enjoyed baseball, camping, reading, attending church and church choir, and he especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

David was preceded in death by his first wife and his father. He is survived by his six children, Philip Walker of Highlands Ranch, CO, Stephanie Walker of Northfield, MN, Julianne Walker of Greeley, CO, Natalie Walker, Jonathan Walker and Joseph Walker all of Sheridan.. He is also survived by his brother, Steve Walker, and his three sisters, Ellen Walker, Carol Goff, and Anne Walker.

Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held at Kane Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at 10:00 am with Mark Graeser officiating. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Robert H. Weber, 78, of Sheridan, passed away on December 15, 2006, at the VA Medical Center in Sheridan.

Robert was born on April 7, 1928, in Big Horn, Wyoming, to Max and Irene (Hayes) Weber. He enlisted in the Navy on November 19, 1947. He served on the USS Piedmont and was honorably discharged on October 11, 1949.

Robert spent most of his life ranching in the Cheyenne, Wyoming, area. He enjoyed hunting fishing.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Betty Weese, Maxine Brent, Kay Allen, and his son Butch Weber. He is survived by his sister, Ilene Wolfe of Sheridan, and a brother Raymond of Junction City, Kansas.

Cremation has taken place and private graveside services are planned. Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Janice L. Westphal, 79, of Sheridan, Wyoming died Friday, December 8, 2006 at her home after a long battle with cancer.

Janice was born August 25, 1927 in Cabondale, Pennsylvania to Jack and Alice (Pierce) Gilgallon.  She grew up in Carbondale and attended Benjamin Franklin High School, graduating in 1946.  She attended one semester at Mary Mount College in Scranton, Pennsylvania before going overseas to perform for the troops in the USO camp shows during World War II.  Her name was officially entered as a Charter Member of the World War II Memorial Society.

Janice married Bill Tiberio in 1947 in Elkton, Maryland.  They had two children, Bonnie Toy (Tiberio) Davidson, and Stacie (Tiberio) Boehm.  In later years after her divorce, Janice married Edward F. Westphal in 1966 in Chicago, Illinois.

Janice was a professional dancer and musician for most of her life.  In the 1950’s and 1960’s she was listed in the Entertainment news of the Chicago paper along side such famous singers as Frank Sinatra and Mel Torme.  In the late 1960’s, Janice became a born again Christian and gave her life to the work of the church.  She joined to First Christina Church of Glen Ellyn, Illinois where she directed a band for children and adults.  Todd Beamer, who gained notoriety as one of the 911 heroes who helped down the plane, was a member of her children’s church band.  At the Calvary United Pentecostal Church in Addison, Illinois she began a puppet ministry and began creating, directing, and producing these shows which played throughout the western suburbs of Chicago.  She also worked for the Wheaton Community Television Station in Wheaton, Illinois where she produced videos for cable television.  She was recognized for her work as producer of the month in 1994 in newspaper publication.  This article recognized her for her on-location video production featuring one of Wyoming’s Buffalo ranches.  Other Wyoming productions included a story on the Historic Sheridan Inn, Ostrich Ranching, and Bradford Briton Memorial Museum.  A few years before moving to Wyoming, Janice was an active member of the Retired Rhythm Rascals as their drummer.  She toured with this band all over the Chicago area.

Janice was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Edward Westphal.

She is survived by two daughters, Stacie (Tiberio) Boehm, of Sheridan, WY, and Bonnie (Tiberio) Davidson, of Streamwood, Illinois; one sister, Claire Morris, of Arlington, VA; one brother, John Gilgallon, of Geneva, IL; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.

Funeral service for Janice will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 16, 2006 at the Bethesda Worship Center with Pastor Scott Lee officiating.  Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Clark Denzler Wieland passed away on December 22, 2006 at his home surrounded by his family. He had been battling Alzheimer’s Disease for several years.

Clark was born August 17, 1932 in Mason City, Nebraska to Marion Clark and Vern Orvial Wieland. He grew up in Mason City and graduated from high school in 1949. He attended Boys State in Nebraska. He did his undergraduate work at the University of Nebraska/Lincoln, was in ROTC, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon. He was a distinguished military graduate. He graduated from University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha with a Doctorate of Medicine in 1957. Clark married Joan Gail Ehlers of Ravenna, Nebraska on March 10, 1951. They have five children, Cynthia, Cheryl, Clark Randall, Laura, and Pamela. Clark interned at Immanuel Hospital in 1958 and was in private practice in Omaha, Nebraska through 1959. He served in the Army overseas in Germany as Dispensary Commanding Officer from 1959 to 1962. He returned to Omaha in 1963 and completed a psychiatric residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in 1967. He served on the Faculty of UNMC from 1967 to 1971. From 1971 to 1978 Clark was the Medical Director at the Panhandle Mental Health Center in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. In 1978 Clark was appointed Chief of Psychiatry at Ft. Meade Veteran’s Administration Hospital in South Dakota. In 1986 he transferred to Biloxi/Gulfport, Mississippi, and then in 1991 to Sheridan, Wyoming. He retired from the Veteran’s Administration in 2000.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Jo Ann, his father and mother. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Joan; his five children, Cynthia Schluckebier of Springfield, Virginia, Cheryl Grubbs of Springfield, Virginia, Clark Randall Wieland of Sheridan, Wyoming, Laura Niehaus of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and Pamela Wieland-Bosteder, MD of Heath, Texas; along with seven grandchildren, Laurel Schluckebier-Kortum, MD, Capt. Carl Clark Schluckebier, Geoffrey Grubbs, Eric Grubbs, Michelle Niehaus, Daniel Bosteder, David Bosteder, and three great-grandchildren, Cassidy Kortum, Todd Kortum, and Barrett Schluckebier.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, January 5, 2007 at Kane Funeral Home with Chaplain Everett Wright officiating.

Kane Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Clark D. Wieland’s name to the University of Nebraska Foundation, Fund #8074 Alzheimer’s Diseases/CNND Research Excellence, 8712 West Dodge Rd. #100, Omaha, NE.
