June 2006 Obituaries


Josephine K. Ahlstrom, 86, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday June 3, 2006 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital.  Funeral services will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday June 7th at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church.  Interment will be in the Elk’s Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. 

Jo was born to Anna (Roman) and Mike Legerski on October 19, 1919 in Passaic, New Jersey.  The family moved to Monarch, WY a few years later to work in the mine.  After that, they moved to Superior, WY to work, then later her father retired in Rock Springs, WY.  She graduated from high school in Superior, WY in 1938.  She then married Bert Tavelli Ahlstrom, son of Marie Tavelli Ahlstrom and stepson of William A. Ahlstrom, at Rock Springs Episcopal Church on May 20th, 1939.  Their daughter Ann Marie was born in Rock Springs.  They then moved to Sheridan in 1940 for work in the mines.  Sons Bert Jr. and Chris were born in Sheridan.

Jo worked at Superior Laundry, Jim Wolfe accounting and Big Horn Avenue grocery store.  She enjoyed reading, the mountains, taking care of grandchildren, scrap booking and photo albums.  She also enjoyed sending newspaper articles to people, bowling, following politics and watching her favorite T. V. shows.

Jo belonged to the Junior Woman’s Club until it dissolved.  She was very involved in Civic Theater Guild plays by taking care of the cloak room.  Jo participated in many charity drives.  She was a member of the Eagle Auxiliary #186 for 60 years where she had served as the secretary and treasurer.  Jo belonged to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church where she helped with Sunday school, the nursery, dinners, bazaars and the lunchroom.  She was also a member of St. Margaret’s Guild working for city, state, and national elections for many years.

She is survived by 3 children: Ann Kilpatrick and husband Richard of Sheridan, Bert Jr. and wife Sue of Cheyenne, and Chris and wife Sandy of Sheridan.  Also survived by eight grandchildren: Krista Kilpatrick of San Diego, CA, Tom Kilpatrick and wife Joanne of Sheridan, Ken Kilpatrick and wife Sara of Sheridan, Kimberlee Eskierka and husband Duane of Las Vegas, NV, Whitney Whitworth and husband Chad of Cheyenne, Ashley Ahlstrom of Denver, Zach and Jake Ahlstrom of Sheridan.  Survived by six great-grandchildren: Emily and Cody Kilpatrick of Sheridan, Christian Kilpatrick of Sheridan, Kaylee Kilpatrick of Lusk, WY, Alex Eskierka of Las Vegas, NV, and Jackson Whitworth of Cheyenne.  Also survived by many nieces and nephews.  In addition, Jo is survived by brother John Legerski and wife Liz of Rock Springs and sister Annie Walker and husband Chick of Rock Springs.

Jo is preceded in death by her husband Bert, brothers Mike, Joe and Andy Legerski of Rock Springs, nephew Michael Legerski and Chuck Walker of Rock Springs, niece Ivy Lee of Rock Springs, infant sister Julie of Sheridan, and brother Frankie Legerski killed in Germany during WWII.

Memorials for Jo may be made to the Elks Cemetery Fund, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, or the Sheridan Senior Center. 


Joseph Frank Arnieri, 90, of Edgewater, CO, died Friday, June 30, in Denver, CO.

Mr. Arnieri was born October 14, 1915 in Kleenburn, WY to Luigi and Mary C. (Gavita) Arnieri.  He grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1932.  Joe went to work for Burlington Northern Railroad in Sheridan until 1968 when he transferred to Alliance, NE, then to Denver where he retired in January of 1969.

Mr. Arnieri married Helen Armstrong October 14, 1937 in Sheridan.  He was a member of the Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, was an avid Yankee’s fan, and a good Democrat.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harry, and two sisters, Rose Green, and Jean Springer.

Mr. Arnieri is survived by three daughters, Sharon Moll, of Seattle, WA, & Patty Johnson, and Marcia Bates, both of Edgewater, CO; two sisters, Mary Smith, and Ann Arnieri, both of Sheridan, WY; 9 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Memorial service for Mr. Arnieri will be 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 11, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ronald Stolcis officiating.

Willie Helling, age 73, of Sheridan, WY died on Tuesday, June 27, 2006, at Lake DeSmet near Buffalo, WY.

Willie was born October 28, 1932, in Osborn County, Nebraska, to Charley & Mildred (Noah) Helling.

Willie grew up around Torrington and Huntley, WY and graduated from high school in Huntley.  He worked at the sugar beet factory in Torrington until he moved to Sheridan in 1950 and then was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Korean War.  Willie returned to Sheridan after the service where he worked as a mechanic and raced stock cars.  In 1958, he was the All State Champion Stock Car racer.  Willie married Maxine Garrett in 1959 and they moved to Casper, WY where he worked for the Wyo. Highway Dept. until he retired in 1988.  They returned to Sheridan after his retirement.  Willie enjoyed fishing, hunting, going to auctions and helping other people.  He loved being with his family.

Willie was preceded in death by his father and one son Jac.

Willie is survived by his wife Maxine of Sheridan; mother Mildred Stock of Casper, WY; sons Kirk Helling and Glenn Helling both of Sheridan; brother Charley Helling Jr. of Basin, WY; three granddaughters and one niece and one nephew.

Viewing will be 1:00pm until 7:00pm on Friday (June 30th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with funeral service at 10:00am on Saturday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. William Heine officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Military rites are by the American Legion and the Wyo. National Guard.

Bernece Heyduck, 93, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 in Westview Health Care Center.

Miss Heyduck was born August 20, 1912 in Centralia, Illinois to Samuel Ellis and Beulah (Bundy) Heyduck.  She spent her early years in Centralia and Kinmundy, Illinois.  The family then moved to Gillette, WY where Bernece graduated from Campbell County High School in 1928.

Bernece was a care giver and hospital records administrator.  She worked as a hospital records clerk at Sheridan Memorial Hospital for 24 years, and cared for individual elderly adults for over 30 years.

Miss Heyduck was a member of the First Untied Methodist Church, the Sheridan Women’s Club, and the Republican Party.  She attended community programs and events in order to expand her interests and knowledge. Bernece read books and magazines extensively, did “needlepoint”, and enjoyed sharing pillows and pictures with family and friends.

Dorothy Hackman befriended Bernece in her later years and was as good a friend as Bernece ever had.  Dorothy ordered audio books and magazines in a weekly basis for Bernece and brought her favorite snacks regularly.  She read to her, smiled and talked with her, and kept her current of church activities.  Thank God for Dorothy!

Bernece was preceded in death by her parents, and her closest friends and relatives.

She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, June 9, 2006 at the First Untied Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating.  Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.

Memorials in memory of Bernece may be made to First United Methodist Church, or to Westview Health Care Center.

 


Dorothy A. Mortenson, age 86, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, June 29, 2006, in Sheridan Manor.

Dorothy was born October 15, 1919, in Sheridan to A.S. “Doc” & Maude (Barnes) Russell.

She grew up in the Sheridan area and graduated from high school in Big Horn, WY.  She worked on the ranch for Curley Wetzel for a time.  Dorothy married Carl Mortenson on November 28, 1940, in Sheridan.  They owned a dairy farm near Big Horn for 15 years and then ranched on Pass Creek for Dorothy Kerns.  They moved into Ranchester, WY in 1966.  She worked haying with her husband and cleaning homes for many years.  She went to work for Bloedorn Lumber in 1997 and worked until this spring.  Carl died in 1999 and she moved into Sheridan in 2004.  Dorothy enjoyed fishing, snowmobiling and painting.

Dorothy was also preceded in death by two sisters.

Dorothy is survived by two daughters Becky Bruce of Spearfish, SD and Margo Humes of Moorcroft, WY, three grandsons, three great grandchildren and two step great grandchildren.

Memorial service will be 10:00am on Saturday (July 8th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Dan Keller officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Edward K. Ratcliff, 71, Lakewood, CO,  formally of Sheridan, WY, died June 16, 2006 in Denver, CO after a brief illness with cancer.

Mr. Ratcliff was born July 2, 1934 at his parents, P. W. and Opal Ratcliff’s home in Dayton.  Ed worked for the U. S. Forest Service and retired from the U. S. Forest Service Regional office in CO after 35 years of service.

Mr. Ratcliff served as an officer and was a life member of the Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520, Sheridan, WY. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two brothers.

Ed is survived by his wife, Winona, of Lakewood, CO; one son, Charles Ratcliff, (Susan) of Baggs, OK; two sisters, Betty Reichert, of Dayton, WY, and Lucy Dudley, of S. D.; one brother, Sam Ratcliff, of AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial service for Mr. Ratcliff will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, July 22, 2006 at the Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520 with the officers of the Lodge officiating.  Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Sue Robertson, age 68, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, June 4, 2006, in Sheridan Manor.

Sue was born May 16, 1938, in Fort Scott, Kansas, to Crist & Vella (Blubaugh) Johnson.

She grew up in Kansas and graduated from high school in Pittsburgh, KS.  Sue married Lee Robertson in Wichita, KS in 1966.  She worked as the office manager for Hartford Insurance.  They moved to Seattle, WA where she worked for Bell/Anderson Real Estate and Insurance for 15 years.  Then she worked for the Ron Brannon Agency for several years.  They moved to Sheridan in 1998.  She collected Dolls and was a member of the United Federation of Doll Clubs.

Services will be in Fort Scott, Kansas.  Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


Monika Robinson, 61, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, June 9, 2006 at her residence.

Monika was born September 30, 1944 in Neumarkt, Germany to Wilhelm and Maria (Pedal) Braun.  She grew up and attended schools in Germany.  Monika was a Laboratory Technician at Cottage Hospital in Santa Barbara, CA.  She married Ernest Robinson, Sr., July 28, 1984 in Summerland, CA.  The couple moved to Sheridan, WY in 1993.

Monika was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church and was a volunteer at the Holy Name Thrift Store.  She loved to hunt and fish, travel, and play bingo.  Monika also used to make stained glass windows.

Monika was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Ernest.

She is survived by two sons, Ernest Marshall Robinson, Jr., Marshall, MO, and Loshel Marshal Robinson, III, San Luis Obipso, CA; two daughters, Jaime Robinson, Independence, MO, and Sabine Schneider, Germany; & 9 grandchildren. 

Memorial service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Father Ron Stolcis officiating.  Interment will be in the Quiet Rest Cemetery, Story, WY.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  

 


Stephen DeWitt Rogers - Born July 28, 1936 to Dr. Curtis L. and Ernestine Levers Rogers, Stephen DeWitt Rogers died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at his residence after a battle with cancer. 

Born and raised in Sheridan, WY, Steve graduated from Sheridan High School in 1954.  He attended several colleges and graduated with a BS degree in 1961 from Colorado State University at Ft. Collins, CO.

Steve was an assistant manager of Gambles in Laramie until 1964 when he became manager of one of the fist Montgomery Ward Catalog and Tire stores in the state at Lander, WY.  In 1967 he opened up a Dairy Queen Brazier store in Lander.  The name was later changed to Dairy Land.  He sold the drive inn in 1974 and moved to Sheridan. 

In July of 1976, Steve went to work for Ash Creek Mining Company where he retired in 1994.  Steve overlooked the reclamation of the mine for the next year.

Steve married Nancy Helvey Burkhart in 1985.  They spent many years traveling in their motor home and settled down in Mesa, AZ for the winters in 2003.  He was Vice President of the Sunland Towers Condominium Association and was in charge of Building and Grounds.  Steve was also a member of TRAC (Sheridan Pathways) in Sheridan.

Steve is survived by his wife Nancy and children, Stephen of Eau Claire, WI, Mathew of Ethete, WY, Scott of Bozeman, MT, Tara Rogers of Sheridan, WY, and Margaret Stiles of Queen Creek, AZ.  His sister, Carly Viehmeyer of Burlington, CO and stepson Bruce Burkhart of Sheridan, WY.  Steve is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 3 step grandchildren.

There will be no services but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date in Mesa and Sheridan, WY.

Margaret L. Torrens, age 89, of Sheridan, WY died Friday, June 23, 2006, in Sheridan Manor.

Margaret was born November 23, 1916, in Wilmore, Kansas, to John & Erma (Fox) Wood.

She grew up and graduated high school in Wilmore.  Margaret married Elmer Marion Torrens on November 24, 1933, in Pratt, Kansas.  They farmed near Pratt until 1941 when they moved to Sheridan.  She raised chickens, pigs and rabbits.  Elmer died in 1976.  She enjoyed her neighbors, gardening, cooking, baking and telling stories.  Margaret loved her all grandchildren.  She was a member of First Christian Church.

Margaret was also preceded in death by one son David; two sisters Arlene Grooms and Virginia Bright; and brother Harold Wood.

Margaret is survived by son Richard of Parkman, WY; two daughters Patti Gillis of Colo. Spgs., CO and Irene Miller of Casper, WY; brother Jack Wood of El Cajon, CA; sisters Gertrude Cordray of Sheridan, Dorothy Grooms of Sheridan and Eleanor Rinker of Rialto, CA; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren and ten great great grandchildren.

Viewing and visitation will be 6:00pm until 7:00pm on Sunday (June 25th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 10:00am on Monday from First Christian Church with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
