Amy Elizabeth Coggins, 37, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, May 26, 2006 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

Amy was born September 26, 1968 in Boston, MA to Stuart and Elizabeth (Hillis) Wakeling.  She grew up and attended schools in Boston and graduated from Cactus High School in Phoenix, AZ in 1987.  Amy then attended nursing school at Paradise Valley Community College in Phoenix. She went to work as a Nursing Assistant at Vencor Hospital in Phoenix where she worked for 15 years.  Amy moved to Sheridan in 2004.

Amy was a member of the Baptist Church.  She enjoyed camping, and had a great compassion for all people.  Her greatest love was spending time with her family.

Amy was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents.

She is survived by her husband, Roger Coggins, of Sheridan, WY; her father, Stewart Wakeling, of Phoenix, AZ; three sons, Tim and Joshua Thomas, and Dillon Coggins, all of Sheridan, WY; one daughter, Nicole Coggins, of Auburn, CA; and one sister, Becky Wakeling, of Boston, MA.

Visitation for Amy will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 1, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating.  Interment will be in the Mr. Hope Cemetery, Big Horn, WY.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. 


Franklin G. Dever, age 84, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, May 14, 2006, in Westview Health Care Center, Sheridan.

Frank was born March 14, 1922, on a farm near Adrian, Missouri.  Frank married Rosy May Seward on May 29, 1942, in Butler, MO.  In December 1942, he was inducted into the service in Leavenworth, Kansas and fought in WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star for his action in a military operation on the Philippine Island of Leyte in October 1944.  After the service, he returned home where he continued farming and doing custom trucking until 1952 when they moved to Hollenberg, Kansas and operated a filling station, garage and did trucking as well as operating a school bus.  In 1963, they moved to Dayton, WY and he worked as a ranch hand for Harold Arney.  Then they moved close to Big Horn, WY and worked on the Bar 13 Ranch for Allen Fordyce.  Later they leased the Roger Rochford Ranch on Soldier Creek and also did trucking, haying and combining.  Then they moved back to near Big Horn where he continued trucking, did shop work and built machine trailers.  Frank became a Christian as a young boy and was active in the Souls Harbor ministry in Sheridan.  Frank enjoyed working with cattle and lending a helping hand to anyone in need.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and brother John Warner.

Frank is survived by his wife Rosy May of Sheridan, sister Lois Marie Seitz of Derby, Kansas and many nieces.

Viewing will be 3:00pm until 6:00pm on Tuesday (May 16th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Graveside service will be 10:00am on Wednesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Bill Cummins officiating.  Military rites are by the American Legion and the Wyo. National Guard.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home


John T. Driskill, 92, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 in Sheridan Manor.

Mr. Driskill was born August 24, 1913 in Childress, Texas to Clarence A. and Margaret E. (Summers) Driskill.  The family moved to Arvada, CO when he was 4 years of age and he grew up and attended schools in Arvada.  John then attended barber school in Denver in 1931.  He moved to Sheridan in 1934 where he went to work for the O. K. Barbershop.

In 1936, Mr. Driskill opened the White Swan Barber and Beauty Shop in Sheridan, which he operated until his semi-retirement in 1982.  Mr. Driskill also owned the Rock Trim Motel from 1957 to 1972, the Down Town Apartments, and numerous other real estate holdings in Sheridan.

Mr. Driskill married Ruth Carroll in Sheridan, WY October 13, 1935.  She died January 13, 1980.  Mr. Driskill then married Ruth Ralston in March of 1981.  Mrs. Driskill died in 1991, and John married Dorothy Wilson on June 12, 1993 in Sheridan.  Dorothy died July 7, 2005. 

John enjoyed fishing, hunting, and became an avid golfer after his retirement.  He was very active in the First Baptist Church of Sheridan, but he especially loved spending time with his family.

Mr. Driskill was preceded in death by his parents; his 3 wives; 2 brothers; and 2 sisters.

John is survived by two daughters, LaVina Fuller, (Mort), of Story, WY, and Ruth Faye O’Neal, (Doug), of Sacramento, CA; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 1 great, great grandchild; 4 nieces; and 4 nephews.

Funeral service for Mr. Driskill will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, May 15, 2006 at the First Baptist Church, 3179 Big Horn Ave., Sheridan, with Pastor Ken Doolin officiating.  Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Dorothy F. Hansen, age 94, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, May 11, 2006, in Sheridan Manor.

Dorothy was born August 17, 1911, in Custer, S. Dakota, to Frank & Blanche (Campbell) Mullenbrink

She grew up and attended schools in S. Dakota.  Dorothy married Albert Hansen on August 14, 1929, in S. Dakota.  They lived in S. Dakota, Colorado and then Ogden, UT where she worked at an Army Depot during WWII.  They came to Sheridan in 1944 and she worked for Tudor Cleaners and then in 1951 they moved to Alaska.  Mr. Hansen worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and they moved to Washington, Kansas, Illinois and finally to Cheyenne, WY.  Mr. Hansen died in Cheyenne in 1978.  Dorothy returned to Sheridan in 1983.  Dorothy was a member of Sunrise Assembly of God.  She enjoyed visiting, witnessing and helping the people at Sheridan Manor for many years.  Dorothy volunteered at Heritage Towers serving meals until 2001 as well and leading a fitness class for a few years.

Her parents; two daughters Jean Rosendahl and Audrey Kocur; two brothers and three grandchildren preceded Dorothy in death.

Dorothy is survived by her daughter Lynda Baker, El Paso, TX, 12 grandchildren and numerous great and great great grandchildren.

Viewing will be noon until 4:00pm on Monday (May 15th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Graveside service will be Tuesday in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. John Jackson officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Helen Hansen went to join Albert, Monte and Dorothy on May 14, 2006.  She had been a resident of Billings Health and Rehab since 1997, where she was loved and pampered by the entire staff.

Helen was born February 11, 1914 in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to George and Effie Kobold.  The family of her father, George Kobold, numbered thirteen children.  Helen’s mother passed away in 1922 when they were living in Jerome, Idaho.  The family was split up at that time, leaving Helen and sister, Doris, placed in a foster home.  In their teens, she and her sister left the foster home and joined their father in Montana.

She married Albert Hansen in 1930.  They married, had five children and resided in the Sheridan/Birney area for approximately thirty years.

Helen spent her life by Albert’s side, working with him in the lumber business and other business ventures.  She also worked as a fire spotter at Poker Jim Lookout near Birney during fire season for many7 years.  She devoted her time to her family and enjoyed gardening and also cooked for the cattle roundups. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert; two daughters, Monte and Dorothy; and one great grandchild, Shelby Orelup.

Helen is survived by daughters Barbara (Lyle) Orelup, and Carole (Bruce Jacobson) Waples, both of Billings, MT; son Ben Hanson, Seattle, Washington; one brother Charles (Florence) Smith, of Vaneta, Oregon; and one sister Gladys (Sterling) White of California.  Helen is also survived by ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren; and six great, great grandchildren.

To you Mom, our mother, grandma and friend, we will miss you so much, but we are calmed to know that you are now resting in peace.

Funeral service for Helen will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, May 18, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating.  Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. 


Wanda Jean Hape passed away May 16th, 2006 at her home in Sheridan.  She died of cancer, with her family at her bedside.

Wanda was born December 28, 1939 to Murel and Wayne Packard.  She was born at the Sheridan Memorial Hospital, in the same building, which would later become Sheridan at College, and where she would become a student.

Her early years were spent on the family ranch on Crazy Woman Creek.  The family moved to Idaho
Falls in 1949.  Wanda completed her schooling there, excelling in marching band and graduating from Idaho Falls High School in 1958.  Through out her school years she continued to spend time in Wyoming, visiting her grand parents ranch each summer. 

She met her future husband, Chester, through a family friend while attending college.  They were married October 3, 1959 at the First Baptist Church is Sheridan.  The Hapes raised three children; Camille, Juanita and Wayne, on the family ranches at Wyarno and Prairie Dog Creek.  The Prairie Dog Creek ranch was originally owned by Wanda’s great grandfather, James Enochs. 

Wanda was a homemaker and business partner on the family ranch and saddle shop.  Her hobbies included gardening, reading, sewing, travel and music.  She was a member of the Sheridan County Cattle Women, Wakely Homemakers, Sweet Adelines and Patchwork Singers.  She was also a school board member and 4-H leader.  She attended the First Baptist Church and the First Untied Methodist Church.

Wanda is survived by her husband, Chester, of Sheridan; her children, Wayne Hape, of Homer, AK, Camille Van Houten, of Casper, WY, and Juanita Balding, of Sheridan, WY; one brother, Gary Packard, of Arvada, WY; and 5 grandchildren, Christal, Eva Marie, and Chester Balding, and Bethany and Cathleen Van Houten.

Memorial service for Wanda will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 19, 2006 at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Harold V. “Spike” Olson, 80, of Sundance, WY, died Saturday, May 20, 2006 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Olson was born April 21, 1926 at Arpan Flats near Belle Fourche, SD to Harry and Grace (Bellen) Olson.  He grew up and attended grade school at Arpan Flats, and graduated from Belle Fourche High School in 1944.

Immediately after graduation, Mr. Olson joined the U. S. Navy, at 18 years of age, serving in World War II where he earned the Victory Medal, the Asiatic/Pacific Area Campaign Medal, and the American Area Campaign Medal.  He was honorably discharged from the Navy May 16, 1946.

Mr. Olson returned to the Belle Fourche area where he went to work for Black Hills Power and Light Co. as a lineman for several years before going to work for Line Builders, Inc., working all over the United States.  In 1960,  “Spike” went to work for Range Telephone as a superintendent in Forsyth, MT.  He worked for Range Telephone for the next 26 years, retiring as a service representative in Sundance in 1986.

Mr. Olson married Betty Pauline Wetsch on September 5, 1968 in Sheridan, WY.

“Spike” was a member of Hiram Lodge #52, A.F.& A.M. of Forsyth, MT, the York Rite Bodies of  Forsyth, Kalif Shrine of Sheridan, WY, and the Inyan Kara Shrine Club of Sundance, WY, and was a Honorary 33rd Degree Mason of the Grand Lodge A.F.&A.M. of Montana.  He was also a member of Electa Capter #5, Order of the Eastern Star of Sundance, WY, American Legion of Sundance, the Loyal Order of Moose of Belle Fourche, SD, the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520, U. S. Navy Memorial, and Duck’s Unlimited.  “Spike” was also very active in the Senior Citizens in Sundance.

“Spike” enjoyed playing cards, dancing, and gambling in Deadwood, SD.  He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

Mr. Olson was preceded in death by his parents, and one sister.

“Spike” is survived by his wife, Betty, of Sundance, WY; 4 sons, Mike (Joleene) Olson, of Gillette, WY, Allan (Melissa) Olson, of Hay Market, VA, Ron (Joy) Wetsch, of Drummond, MT, and Rick (Ivy) Wetsch, of McCook, NE; 3 daughters, Donna (Alan) Cope, of Sheridan, WY, Punky (Ray) Zastoupil, of Forsyth, MT, and Valerie Olson, of Billings, MT; 1 sister, Margorie Russo, of Ark Dale, WI.; 20 grandchildren; and 18 great grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Olson will be from 9:00 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Masonic Lodge Hall in Sundance, WY.  Masonic funeral service conducted by Sundance Lodge #9 A.F.&A,M. will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 26, 2006 at the Masonic Lodge Hall, Sundance.  Interment will be 1:30 P.M. May 26, 2006 in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Chaz G. Ready, age 17, of Sheridan, WY passed away Sunday, May 14, 2006, in a car accident. 

Chaz was born December 7, 1988, in Sheridan to Mistie A. Ready and Mike A. Hlousek.

Chaz spent most of his childhood & school days between Huntley, MT and Sheridan, where he loved and enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding and music.  He was well known for his love for & accomplishments in sports.  He was a starter as a freshman on the N.S.I. varsity football team which was the first team to reach the state football playoffs.  He also made the Babe Ruth All-Star team in 2003.  Chaz was currently employed by Competition Drywall where he was learning the trade by his employer, friend & ex-stepdad Bud Daniels. 

Chaz is survived by his parents Mistie A Lee and Mike A. Hlousek; siblings Hagen and Shonie; step sister Taylor; grandparents Treva Mayo & the late Larry Mayo, Britton Ready, R.P. & Jeri Hlousek, Jeanice Massaro; great grandparents Peggy Moody and June Hartman; uncles Monte & Jerod Ready, Gerald Hlousek; aunts Penny Jones, Lalani, Brittania & Kayla Ready; several cousins and his best friends Jeff, Chance, Brandon, Zach & Ben.

Chaz will be loved & remembered always for his love of life and his family.

Funeral service will be 3:00pm on Wednesday from St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Lola L. Slepitis, 80, of Dayton, WY, died Thursday, May 11, 2006 at her residence.

Mrs. Slepitis was born December 12, 1925 in Denver, CO to Milton and Clara Louise (Mayfield) Woods.  She grew up and attended schools in Denver.  Mrs. Slepitis was a clerk for the Colorado Game, Fish and Parks and for St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, CO.  She married Albin Joseph Slepitis September 17, 1961 in Raton, New Mexico.

Mrs. Slepitis enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, doing various crafts, and baking pound cakes for her grandchildrens’ schools.

Lola was preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her husband, Albin, of Dayton, WY; one daughter, Anntoinette Slepitis-Brady, husband, Leo, of Ranchester, WY, and their two children, Anastasia and John Joseph; and 5 sons from a previous marriage.

Constance M. (Connie) Smith, 93, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, May 2, 2006 in Sheridan Manor.

Mrs. Smith was born March 9, 1913 in Elrod, South Dakota to Robert H. and Myra Irena (Fuller) Beatty.  She grew up on the family farm near Clark, South Dakota, and attended schools in Henry, South Dakota, graduating from Henry High School in 1930.  Connie then attended South Dakota State University in Brooking, South Dakota graduating in May of 1934 with a Bachelor of Science Degree.

Mrs. Smith came to Wyoming in 1935 where she taught school in Arvada.  She married Edward G. Smith February 6, 1937 in Billings, MT.  The couple lived various places around Wyoming while Mr. Smith worked for the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission.  They moved to the Brewer Ranch at Banner, WY, the John E. Rice Ranch, and the Duncan Ranch before returning to the Brewer Ranch in 1952 where they lived until retiring in 1974.

While in Banner, Mrs. Smith taught at the Banner school for several years before it closed.  In 1958, Mrs. Smith started teaching at the Buffalo Elementary and the Buffalo Junior High School until her retirement in May of 1974.  The couple moved to Story and then to Buffalo, WY in 1993.  Mr. Smith died in 1997, and Mrs. Smith moved to Sugarland Ridge in 2000.

Connie was a member of the Christian Church of South Elrod. SD.  She was a housewife, an educator, loved being on the ranch at Banner, enjoyed reading, playing cards, going to the Elk’s Club to dance, and loved to travel in her retirement.

Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Ed; her parents; and all of her brothers and sisters.

She is survived by 2 sons, Steve Smith, (Kay), of Sheridan, WY, and Walter C. (Butch) Smith, (Janet), of Idalia, CO and Story, WY; 2 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; and 1 great grandchild.

A memorial graveside service for Mrs. Smith with family and friends will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, May 5, 2006 in the Elk’s Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.    Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
