February 2006 Obituaries
Irma (Emma) Barbula, 99 and 11 months died Wednesday, February 15, 2006 at her residence of natural causes. She did not have any diagnosed life-threatening illness or disease. Her youngest son, Dr. Marvin Barbula, has been her caregiver at her residence since December 1997. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, February 21 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Ron Stolcis officiating. Viewing and remembering Irma through pictures and her favorite poems and prose will follow the Rosary. Finger food and refreshments will be served. Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, February 22 at Holy Name Catholic Church. A vocalist and violinist will sing and play her favorite religious music. Burial will be in the Frank H. Barbula plot in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Irma was born on March 18, 1906 in Goose Run (Athens County), Ohio to Anthony and Julianna (Nagy) Sabo. She was baptized at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Buchtel, Ohio. Her father came to Monarch to work in the coal mine and sent for his family. One of Irma’s childhood recollections was getting off the train in Monarch and asking her dad, “Why did you leave us?” Irma graduated from eighth grade at Monarch Elementary School. There were seven graduates in her 1920 class. Irma graduated from Sheridan High School in 1924. She rode the trolley to and from Monarch each weekday while attending high school. Her father built a house on North Main Street in Sheridan in the early 1920s. Her normal training [teacher preparation courses] instructor wrote in an April, 1924 letter of recommendation that “Irma is a young woman of excellent character, an outstanding student, and a very conscientious teacher.” She taught fifth and sixth grade at Carneyville Elementary School. Carneyville later became known as Kleenburn. Her first year salary was $600 annually. She married Frank H. Barbula on June 18, 1925 in Holy Name Catholic Church. Father John Duffy officiated. A few sentences from a write-up by a newspaper staff member state “one of the prettiest weddings of the year was solemnized at Holy Name Catholic Church. A violin obbligato was played be Steve Sabo, brother of the Bride. The bride was charmingly dressed in white georgette and satin. The couple left on a two-week honeymoon to Yellowstone Park and other western states.” For four years, Frank worked at the Tongue River Trading Company (Monarch Grocery Store and Post Office). He later worked in the coal mine. The family lived in Monarch for twenty-two years. The family moved to Boulder, Colorado, back to Monarch, then to Casper. Emma and Frank moved to Sheridan in 1967. Emma enjoyed crocheting and made afghans, pillows and table doilies for her two sons and for her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and baker. Emma loved flowers and while her husband Frank tended to the vegetable part of the garden, she grew a variety of beautiful flowers. She enjoyed playing double pinochle and cribbage with relatives Rose, Bill and Alec and with close friends Mary Mentock, Helen Barello, and Dodie Marosok. Emma was a very active member of the St. Thomas Church in Monarch. She sang in the choir and was a leader in putting together church bazaars, which were fund-raisers. Emma was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church and the St., Agnes Altar and Rosary Society. For years she watched the Denver Broncos. She loved her family. “Families are forever,” she would say. Survivors are her two sons, Frank (Agnes) and Marvin. She had five grandchildren: Richard M. (Barbara) of California, Janette (Randy) of Billings, Kenneth E. of California, Jerry (Cindy) of Billings, and Patricia (Allen) of Sheridan. She had 12 great-grandchildren and 15 great, great grandchildren. A sister, Elizabeth Jarrett, Arvada, Colorado, a sister-in-law, Natalie Hyde, Lancaster, California, and a brother-in-law, Vern Trowbridge, Broomfield, Colorado are also survivors. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank (April 28, 1982) and infant son John, two brothers, Steve (Marie) Sabo, Andrew Sabo and sister Julie (Vern Trowbridge. Brothers-in-law and their wives Henry and Maude, Bill and Rose, Edward and Theresa, Alec and Margaret, John, who died in 1920, and sister-in-law Katherine Moore. Flowers would be appreciated. Emma loved flowers. She had a flower garden each summer for many years. In her house she has several silk-flower arrangements. Dress at both services is casual. A light lunch will be served in the Parish Hall following the Interment. Averil Augusta DePue, 95, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, February 26, 2006 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. DePue was born September 1, 1910 in Alliance, NB to David and Lida (Cox) Lewis. She moved with her family at the age of 5 to Sheridan. Mrs. DePue grew up and attended Sheridan schools, graduating from Sheridan High School in 1930. Mrs. DePue then attended nursing school in the old Sheridan Memorial Hospital graduating from Nurse’s Training in 1933. She then started nursing at the hospital. She married Roger DePue January 16, 1937 in Buffalo, WY. Mrs. DePue was a member of First Christian Church in Sheridan and a member of the Royal Neighbors. She enjoyed writing poetry, working crossword puzzles, and recipe collecting. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Roger. She is survived by two daughters, Joyce Muller, and Virginia Fiedor, both of Sheridan, WY; 6 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Memorial service for Mrs. DePue will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, March 4, 2006 in the Sheridan Manor Chapel with the Rev. Douglas Goodwin officiating. Memorials in memory of Mrs. DePue may be made to the Sheridan Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program, or the Senior Mini Bus, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Agnes Celia Hedwig Fletcher, 90, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, February 8, 2006 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. Fletcher was born in Carneyville, Wyoming on October 6, 1915 to John P. and Mary B. (Kawulok) Legerski. The third eldest child of a large family, Agnes attended Acme School, helped take care of her siblings, an eventually went to work cooking on the larger ranches around the county. In 1935, she married Roscoe (Curley) Pence in Sheridan. Mr. Pence was accidentally killed in August, 1949. Agnes went to work as a Nurse’s Aid at the old Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. She then went on to graduated with the first Licensed Practical Nurse class in Sheridan and continued nursing until her retirement in 1974. Agnes married William C. (Bill) Fletcher in August, 1959. They were together until Mr. Fletcher died in June, 1990. Mrs. Fletcher loved her job in nursing and had a wonderful bedside manner with the patients. She enjoyed working with her hands—whether it be in the dirt growing things (once known as the strawberry lady around the county) or decorating her home. In her later years, she and her little dog, “Snooky” were an ongoing twosome for well over ten years. Agnes was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Wilbur Pence; her two husbands; three brothers; and four sisters. She is survived by her daughter, Wilma Hull, of Sheridan, WY; daughter-in-law, Dorothy Pence, of Lander, WY; 5 granddaughters; one grandson; fifteen great grandchildren; eight great, great grandchildren; and 5 brothers, Joe, George, Frank, Ted, and Anton Legerski; and numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mrs. Fletcher will be from 9:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. Monday, February 13, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, February 14, 2006 in the old Eagle’s Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Father Thomas Ogg officiating. A Celebration of Life may be held at a later date. Loucks St., Sheridan, WY 82801, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Mildred R. Hoblit, 82, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, February 11, 2006 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. Hoblit was born August 2, 1923 in Gillette, WY to Marion Lunceford and Effie Mae (Eisele) Ruff. She was raised on the family homestead at Wildcat, WY and attended country schools. Mildred then attended Campbell County High School. On March 10, 1942 she was united in marriage to Delbert H. Hoblit in Billings, MT. They moved to Sheridan in 1946, following Delbert’s discharge from the U. S. Army. Mildred did the bookkeeping for her husband’s Construction Company, Hodaka motorcycles and Polaris snowmachine businesses. Mildred was an avid sports fan. She enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves and one of her greatest enjoyments was being able to attend one of the Brave’s games in the new stadium in Georgia. Mildred also enjoyed watching NASCAR, and especially bull riding. She loved her home, was an excellent cook, doing yard work, gardening, reading, working crosswords, knitting, but most of all being with her family. She was a devoted and loving wife, Mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt. Mrs. Hoblit was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert, two brothers, and one sister. She is survived by one son, David Hoblit, of Janesville, WI; one daughter, Judy Schaffer, of Sheridan, WY; one brother, John Ruff, of Gillette, WY;, one sister, Betty Wolfe, of Rozet, WY; a step-daughter, JoAnne Kennedy, of Kentucky; two grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; & great nieces and great nephews. Brundage St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Agnes Cecilia Gillis KennedyCeil was born on November 22, 1928 in Billings, MT to James H. and Agnes C. Gillis, (Berthier), of Nova Scotia who homesteaded near Pictograph Caves. At the age of eight, Mom moved with her family to Sheridan, Wyoming where James was a stationary (steam) engineer and manager of the Sheridan Laundry. Mom attended Holy Name School and graduated in 1936 from Sheridan High before earning a nursing degree at St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1939. After practicing at the Sheridan Clinic, Mom enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps on October 19, 1943 and was billeted to England. Mom saw the worst aspect of war, its effects on the young servicemen and women of both sides who passed through her care. She was a true war heroine. One of the servicemen to whom she administered was Captain Robert S. Kennedy, also of Sheridan. Bob and Ceil renewed and deepened their previous acquaintance and were married at Saint Peter’s Church in Cirencester, England on April 22, 1945. After the war they returned to Sheridan from where Bob managed ranches near Lodge Grass, Montana and on the Little and Big Powder Rivers and near Clearmont in Wyoming for Faddis Kennedy Cattle Co. and Ceil was a housewife raising four children, was active in the Presbyterian Church, P.E.O., Chapter B, and numerous community organizations. Ceil was a loving wife, mother and friend. She stayed in contact with her fellow nurses of “Hut 124” for the rest of her life and was proud of her service in “The Big One.” Mom’s parents, husband Bob and brothers Roy and Jim preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children, Kathryn, Bob (Jan), Jim and Margaret (Tom); five grandchildren, Kristen and Callie Hysell, Jake (Kami) Kennedy and Kurtis and Carson Steinhorst; 2 great grandchildren; sisters Myrtle Luckett of Jackson, Mississippi and Rosie Bennick of Sheridan, Wyoming; and her brother, Neil of Denver. Mom peacefully returned to her Lord and rejoined Dad on February 4, 2006. We loved you Mom. May you rest in peace. Memorial service will be 10:00 A.M. Legg, age 90, of Sheridan, WY died Tuesday, February 14, 2006, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan. James was born September 2, 1915, in Raymond, WY to James A. & Maude (Cutshaw) Legg. James grew up near Cody, WY and graduated from Cody High School. He attended the University of Montana until he enlisted in the Army. He served with the Topographical Engineers serving in many places around the world. He was a member of the engineers who drew the topographical map of Normandy Beach for the D-Day invasion. James married Florence Lozar in 1942 in Yuma, AZ. She died in 1952. After the service, he worked for the Bureau of Reclamation until returning to Wyoming and graduating from the Univ. of Wyoming. The he moved to Riverton, WY as the Assoc. County Agent. James married Geneva Seamonds on December 19, 1952, in Lander, WY. They operated a flower shop in Lander until he returned to work for the Bureau of Reclamation. They lived in Grand Junction, CO, Napa, CA, before moving to Klamath Falls, OR where he worked until retiring in 1977. They moved to Sheridan in 1994. James was a member of the Masonic Lodge, NARFE, VFW and the American Legion. James enjoyed hunting, fishing, being outdoors, photography and loved all his family very much. One sister and two brothers preceded James in death. James is survived by his wife Geneva of Sheridan; sons James Melvin of Napa, CA, Donald of Mesa, CO and David of Aurora, CO; daughters Judith Butkovitch of San Antonio, TX, Barbara Tedrick of Alturis, CA and Laura Strout of Sheridan; brother Gordon Legg of Sheridan; sisters Dorothy Legg of Cody, WY, Lucille Mason of Cauldwell, ID and Joan Lukesh of Boise, ID; fourteen grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren. Memorial service will be 11:00am on Friday (Feb. 17th) from First Baptist Church with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Military rites rendered by the Wyo. National Guard and the American Legion. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may benefit the First Baptist Church. Victor E. Miller, 79, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, February 1, 2006 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mr. Miller was born January 20, 1927 in Bellingham, WA to Victor G. and Gladys (Clearwater) Miller. He grew up in Sheridan and attended school at Garryowen, MT, Wakely, WY and later attended Sheridan High School. Victor served in the United States Navy during World War II. His service included serving on several South Pacific Islands. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Victor married Winifred Ann Salstrom April 18, 1947 in Hardin, MT. Victor started ranching with his family on Cat Creek. He also worked various other jobs including bartending and sheep shearing. He began his railroading career in the early 1950’s as a locomotive fireman for the C.B. & Q. and retired at the age of 61 from the Burlington Northern Railroad as a locomotive engineer. Victor was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles #186, the BPO Elk’s Lodge #520, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, and the Good Sam’s Club. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and prided himself with knowing every nook and cranny of the Big Horn Mountains. Vic and his wife, Winnie were lifelong lovers of traveling and spent 30 years visiting almost every state in the union while putting several hundred thousand miles on numerous motor homes. Vic developed a passion for the game of golf after the age of 50. During his many miles of traveling, Vic would golf on any golf course that attracted his attention, which turned out to be any course from Wyoming to the finest courses in the country. Vic quickly became an “A Golfer”! He played tournament golf whenever the occasion arose. Victor mostly enjoyed golfing with his golf buddies at Kendrick Golf Course. He was very proud of achieving 3 holes-in-one!! Vic was preceded in death by his parents Victor G. and Gladys Miller; 2 brothers, Samuel & James Miller; & 2 sisters, Doddie Dodd & Betty Miller. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Winifred Ann Miller, of Sheridan, WY; one son, John Miller and wife, Brenda, of Sheridan, WY; two brothers, Bill Miller, of Sheridan, WY, and Robert Miller, of Casper, WY; one sister, Irma Salstrom, of Sheridan, WY; three grandchildren, Brandi Harris & husband, Jeff, of Newark, OH, Callie Drell & husband, Chris, of Sheridan, WY, and Kayla Wilson, of Sheridan, WY; & three great grandchildren, Braydon James & Aubrey Christine Drell, both of Sheridan, WY, and Madison Bree Phillips, of Newark, OH. Novara, 86, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, February 4, 2006 at her residence. Ms. Novara was born march 20, 1919 in Monarch, WY to Michael and Anna (Gryz) Novara. She grew up and attended school in Monarch and graduated from Sheridan High School and the Heiman Business College. Ms. Novara left Sheridan in 1940 to move to Washington, D. C. where she worked as a secretary for the State Department until 1945. She then moved to Glendale, CA for a few years before settling in Hollywood, CA where she worked for Litton Industries and Westrex Sound Studio until her retirement. She returned to Sheridan in 2000 to live closer to her family. Ms. Novara was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, and most of all loved to travel. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, and four brothers. She is survived by several nieces and nephews, among them, Cynthia Jacobson, of Sheridan, WY. Vigil service will be 7:00 P.M. Friday, February 10, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral Liturgy will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 11, 2006 at Holy name Catholic Church with Father Ronald Stolcis as Celebrant. Connor St., Sheridan, or to the Dog and Cat Shelter, 84 E. Ridge Rd., Sheridan, WY 82801 Helen L. Ryan, 66, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, February 7, 2006 at her residence. At her request, cremation has taken place, and a Memorial service will be 2:00 P.M. Saturday, February 11th, 2006 at Trinity Lutheran Church with interim Pastor Cliff Gronneberg officiating. Helen Louise Anderson was born December 13, 1939 in Dillon, Montana to Carl A. and Lulu Belle (Gilman) Anderson. Her father worked for the Telephone Company, and they lived in Dillon, Great Falls, Cutbank and Red Lodge, Montana. Helen graduated from high school in Red Lodge in 1957. She continued her education at Eastern Montana College (now MSU-Billings), graduating in 1961. She took a position with the school district in Sheridan, teaching at Coffeen School for 30 years, during which time she influenced the lives of many hundreds of children. Helen married Doug Ryan on April 16, 1971, and moved in with him, and his 3 teenagers. After her retirement, Helen and Doug got into antiquing, naming their business Goose Crique Antiques. They sold as vendors at various antique shows around the area, until health problems forced them to quit. They also had booths at the Best Out West Antiques and Collectibles in Sheridan. Helen also enjoyed reading, playing bridge, visiting with friends, especially having coffee with Vicki Bare, and gardening. Mrs. Ryan was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, the former Sheridan Service League, the Trail End Guilds and a life member of the National Education Association. In addition to her husband, Helen is survived by her brother, Carl Anderson and his wife, Diane, of Fort Collins, CO; 3 stepchildren, Gail Vanderpoel and her husband, Tom, of Fox River Grove, IL, Carol Krumm and her husband, Bob, of Sheridan, WY, and Kevin and his wife, Karen Schneider, of Bowling Green, Kentucky; 5 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
