January 2006 Obituaries
Ronald James Bihr, 69, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, January 16, 2006 in the Sheridan V. A. Medical Center. Mr. Bihr was born December 13, 1936 in Worland, WY to John and Molly (Lass) Bihr. He grew up and attended schools in Worland, and graduated from Worland High School. After high school, Mr. Bihr worked in Texas for several years before returning to Worland where he worked for Edward’s Motors as a parts man. Mr. Bihr also served in the U. S. Army in 1961 & 1962. Ronald moved to Sheridan in 1997. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two sons. Ronald is survived by two sons, Ronald Bihr, of Worland, WY, and Scott Bihr, of San Francisco, CA; one brother, Richard Bihr, of Worland, WY; and one grandson. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials in memory of Mr. Bihr may be made to the American Cancer Society. Thomas Dean Hammond, 86, of Sheridan, WY, died January 22, 2006 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Tom was born October 26, 1919 in Sheridan, WY to Dean and Cora (Hughes) Hammond. He married Florence Virginia Baker in Sheridan, WY on April 20, 1940. They had two children, Robert Dean and Nancy Kay. Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie, in August of 1996. He worked at Montana Dakota Utilities from 1941-1982, and as electric superintendent from 1950-1982. He served in the U. S. Army 10th Mountain Division in Italy during W. W. II. Tom’s dad, Dean, was county commissioner in Sheridan for 16 years from 1938 to 1954. He was instrumental in persuading the U. S. Army to donate the large hanger still located at the Sheridan County Airport. Tom grew up on the Fryberger 4H Ranch on Soldier Creek. He went to grade school, 1-8, in a one-room school building on Soldier Creek Road, and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1940. One of Tom’s greatest passions in life was playing dance band music on his saxophone. While still a youngster he began playing for dances at box socials at local ranches. He played for many dances over the next 50 years. He sang and played saxophone in King Davis’ Dance Band from 1952-1980. Tom was a member of the Sheridan Masonic Lodge #43 for 50 years and the Kalif Shrine and Shrine Barss Band of Sheridan for over 40 years. He was a member of Rotary International from 1950 to 1982 and a member of Elks Lodge #520, and the American Legion. He also served on the Sheridan County Fair Board. One of his proudest accomplishments was his cabin on Big Willow Creek, 1 mile west of Bear Lodge on Highway 14A. He purchased the cabin in 1960 and remodeled it over the next 30 years. He and his family spent many happy days at the cabin in the Big Horn Mountains. After his retirement in 1982 he and Flossie spent many wonderful years traveling the United States, Canada and Mexico with their Airstream Trailer. Tom is survived by a son, Robert Hammond of Denver, CO; a daughter, Nancy Mrvos of Sheridan, WY; two sisters, Geraldine Irwin of Denver, CO, and Josephine House of Riverton, WY; six grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren. At Tom’s request, cremation has taken place, and his cremains will be inured with his wife, Flossie in the Masonic Section of the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Memorial service for Tom will be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, February 4, 2006 at the Sheridan Masonic Temple, 109 S. Gould St., Sheridan, WY with the officers of Big Horn Mountain Lodge #43 officiating. A reception will be held in the Masonic Temple immediately following the service. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Cynthia M. “Pat” Kennedy, 88, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, January 12, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Kennedy was born September 14, 1917 in East St. Louis, Illinois to Michael Reed an Elsie (Wilton) Kennedy. She grew up and attended schools in St. Louis, where she received her nursing degree. Mrs. Kennedy married Tunis Clark in 1954, and they owned the PK Ranch west of Sheridan. The couple sold the PK to Don Roberts, and purchased the –V Ranch in Montana, which they later sold to the Scott family. Mr. Clark died in 1961. Mrs. Kennedy worked as a sales clerk in various stores in Sheridan. She was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Sheridan. Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister. No services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Robert “Bubba” Lee, 44, longtime Pinedale and Sheridan resident, died Saturday, January 21, 2006 peacefully in his sleep at his residence of natural causes. A Celebration of Life for “Bubba” will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 3, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home, and friends are welcome to attend. Mr. Lee was born on June 5, 1961 in Jackson, WY to Harold and Freida (Gilbert) Lee. He later moved to Pinedale where he attended High School. He then married Julie Lee Jorgensen and had 2 lovely children, Ryan “Buddy” Lee and Erin Lee, both of Sheridan, WY. “Bubba” enjoyed sports, camping, fishing, and anything to do with the outdoors. His greatest joy was seeing the birth of his first grandchild, Tyler James Lee, who was born on December 16, 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Freida Lee, and one brother, Phillip Lee. “Bubba” is survived by his loving children, Ryan and Erin Lee, of Sheridan, WY; three sisters, Judy Walker, Kathy Gilbert, and Linda Pape; and one grandchild, Tyler James Lee. We will miss you, “Bubba” and say “Hi” to Jerry for us. Doris Helen Light, 73, of Sheridan, WY, died Friday, January 13, 2006 in Deaconess Billings Clinic, Billings, MT. Doris was born November 15, 1932 in Iron Mountain, Missouri to Ewell Landon and Emma Anna (Logan) Bates. She grew up and attended schools in Iron Mountain. Doris married Elmer Ray Light February 27, 1954. Doris was a caregiver, taking care of all of her brothers and sisters who were left after their mother died in 1961. She cared for the elderly in private homes, and shared the family history and kept all informed of all birthdays and special occasions. Mrs. Light belonged to the Baptist Church. She loved to read, walk, loved her soaps, and the Catholic Church. She especially loved her family. Doris was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and two brothers. She is survived by two brothers, Marvin Bates, of Edmond, OK, and Ronald Bates, of Bismark, Missouri; five sisters, Wanda Zimbelman, of Laurel, MT, Verna Nichols, of De Soto, Missouri, Rita Frost, of Dallas, TX, Sue Jackson, of Jaynesville, Wisconsin, and Debbie Wohl, of Tucson, Arizona; 3 special nieces and nephews, as well as other numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral service for Mrs. Light will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 16, 2006 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Robert Miller and Father Peter James officiating. Interment will be in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
Betty Lornell Towns, 84, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, January 15, 2006 at her residence. Ms. Towns was born in Kansas to Victor M. and Sarah A. (Lawrence) Towns. The family moved to Sheridan when she was a young girl, and Betty attended Sheridan schools, and graduated from Sheridan High School. She then attended Business College in Seattle, WA. Betty returned to Sheridan and worked at the V. A. Medical Center, later moving to Denver for a time before returning to Sheridan to be near her parents. Ms. Towns was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by one brother, Richard Towns, of Sheridan, WY; three sisters, Emmojean Lilley, of Vancouver, WA, Patricia Ann Uzzell, & Margaret E. Strickland, both of Clifton, CO; and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will by held later this spring with inurnment in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials in memory of Ms. Towns may be made to the Supported Independence Program, 101 W. Brundage St., or the Sheridan Senior Citizen’s Center, 211 Smith St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Harlan Norval Tulley, 90, of Sheridan, WY, departed this life as he had lived in quiet dignity on January 3, 2006. He was born October 29, 1915 in Worley, Idaho to Lucian Allan and Harriet Anna (Burlingam) Tulley. He worked for the USDA in Soil Conservation, later transferring to US State Department in Washington, D. C., then went overseas, living in Haiti, Nigeria, and Ethiopia. He was married to Agnes Smith in 1942 in Sheridan, WY. Harlan was active in fraternal orders throughout his life. He was a 50 year member and past master of Sheridan Lodge No. 8, past high priest of Holy Royal Arch Knights Templar, past commander of DeMolay No. 6, Royal Arch Mason of Wyoming, and grand commander for State of Wyoming, past master of Royal Arch & Selected Master of Wyoming, life member of Kalif Shrine and Kalif Buckskin Horse Patrol, past sovereign of Red Cross of Constantine, a 50 year member and 5-time past patron of Naomi Chapter No. 2 of Eastern Star, a member of St. Denny Conclave, a Scottish Rite Free Mason, & a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church. Harlan was inducted in the U. S. Air Force and flew in B-25 Mitchell Bombers with the 12th Air Force, 57th Bomb Wing, 321 Bomb Group, 447 Squadron. He was shot down over the Brenner pass, captured and went to Nuremberg, Germany as a P. O. W., and released in April 1945. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and two sisters. He is survived by his wife, Agnes, of 63 years, two sons, William and Fredric Tulley, both of Sheridan, and many nieces and nephews. Private services will be held at St. Peter’s Chapel at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials in memory of Harlan may be made for the V. A. Building #86 Nursing Unit, or the Knights Templar Eye Fund, in care of Tom Nance, 1063 Gladstone St., Sheridan, WY 82801
