December 2005 Obituaries


Hazel Aegerter, age 89, of Sheridan, WY died Saturday, December 24, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Hazel was born the daughter of William and Althea (Smith) Cook on March 27, 1916, in Fort Pierre, S. Dakota.  At the age of two her parents moved to Absarokee, MT where she grew to adulthood.  She attended 12 years of school at Absarokee, graduating High School in 1934.  In 1935, she married Arne Arthun and they farmed and ranched in the Stillwater Valley until they sold their farm and operated a motel and service station in Buffalo, WY.  In 1955, after her divorce from Arne, she continued to operate the business.  In 1956, Hazel remarried to Harold Aegerter of Buffalo.  They continued the motel operation until his passing in 1964.  From this union, son Mark Allen Aegerter was born.  In 1979, Hazel retired and moved to Sheridan with son Mark.

Hazel was a hard worker and she was very active in whatever she did.  While continuing the motel operation in Buffalo, she worked at Johnson County Memorial Hospital as a cook and later as a waitress at the Crossroads Inn.  After moving to Sheridan, she worked in the Pamida Pharmacy and later at Westview Health Care Center and the New Image Health Club until her 86th year. 

Hazel was a master in the art of raising African Violets.  She was a past president and secretary of the Sheridan Violet Club.  She competed and sold many of her plants during the club’s annual African Violet Show.  She had a green thumb and her yards and flowerbeds were evidence of her talent and love for growing flowers.

Hazel was an active member and worker at Trinity Lutheran Church for 26 years and was a mentor with the Logos Youth Program.

Hazel is survived by children, Arvin Arthun of Billings, MT, Raymond Arthun of Franktown, CO, Arlene Hager of Soldotna, AK, Sonja Abell of Sheridan and Mark Aegerter of Sheridan; brothers and sisters Alice Hart of Oregon, Keith Cook of Florida, Maxine Dykeman of Montana, Chuck Cook of Montana, Alfred Cook of Arizona, Stanley Cook of New Mexico and Doug Cook of Montana; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 8:00am until 4:00pm on Friday (Dec. 30th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 10:00am on Saturday from Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev. Cliff Gronneberg officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Michael Howard Curtis, age 49, of Story, WY died Sunday, December 25, 2005, at his Story home.

Michael was born October 7, 1956, in Casper, WY to David & Ruth (Fortenberry) Curtis.

He grew up in Casper and Illinois where he graduated from Joliet Township High School.  He served four years in the Air Force.  Michael married Lisa Marie Leslie on August 22, 1975, in Las Vegas, NV.  They moved to Story in 1979.  Michael worked as an electrician for several contractors including Modern Electric.  He became a master electrician.  In 1991, he opened Courtesy Electric in Story and operated it until 1997.  He then did CAD drawing for electrical designs of computer furniture.  Michael was a member of the Christopher Reeves Foundation and had been a volunteer in the Story Fire Department.  Michael had been a member of the Masonic Lodge, Kalif Shrine, York Rite and Knights Templar.  Michael enjoyed music, reading, playing guitar, fly-fishing and movies.

He was preceded in death by his mother, grandparents and Uncle Jerry Fortenberry.

Michael is survived by his wife Lisa of Story; sons Michael of Sheridan and Theodore of Denver, CO; daughter Jessica Buckingham of Story; father David Fortenberry of Texas; brothers David of California and Daniel of Colorado; sister Kelly Garman of Joliet, IL and two granddaughters.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Thursday (Dec. 29th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating.  Interment will be in Quiet Rest Cemetery near Story.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Dean Ray Fitzpatrick, age 56, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, December 22, 2005, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan.

Dean was born September 19, 1949, in Fountain Hill, Pennsylvania

Dean grew up and graduated high school in Pennsylvania and attended college there.  He enlisted in the Air Force and served in Viet Nam.  After the service, he lived in Pennsylvania and Rapid City, SD before coming to Sheridan in 1979.  He married Teresa Scott on November 12, 1980, in Sheridan.  They divorced in 1991.  He worked several jobs in Sheridan.  Dean enjoyed yard sales, camping, fishing and was an avid racecar fan.  He loved spending time with his children.

His parents and one brother preceded Dean.

Dean is survived by his son Travis Fitzpatrick of Sheridan; daughter Karol Whisler of Sheridan; one sister and one grandson.

Memorial service will be 2:00pm on Saturday (Dec. 31st) from United Pentecostal Church with The Rev. R.H. Robinson officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


June C. Johnson, 78, of Ranchester, WY, died Monday, December 5, 2005 at her residence.

Mrs. Johnson was born June 25, 1927 in Lodgepole, NB to Lawson and Mabel (Osborn) Cunningham.  She grew up and attended schools in Illif, CO and graduated from Illif High School.  June then attended and graduated from the University of Colorado at Greeley with a Bachelor of Education Degree.  After graduation, Mrs. Johnson moved to Ranchester, WY where she taught in the Ranchester High School.  In 1963, June started teaching in the Tongue River High School, retiring in June of 1982.

June married Don Johnson March 17, 1950 in Sheridan. 

Mrs. Johnson was a member of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Past Worthy Matron and 50-year member of Friendship Chapter # 51, Order of the Eastern Star, and a member of the Daughters of the Nile in Sheridan.  She enjoyed sewing, needlework, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

June was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Don, 1 son, 1 sister, and 2 brothers.

She is survived by one son, John Johnson, of Ranchester, WY; one daughter, Judy Leinius, of San Antonio, TX; one sister, Jane Cunningham, of CA; 5 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren.

At Mrs. Johnson’s request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials in memory of Mrs. Johnson may be made to the Shrine Children’s Hospital, Box K, Sheridan, WY  82801, or to the Tongue River Children’s Place, in care of the Cowboy State Bank, Ranchester, WY  82839


Andrew “Smokey” Pilch, age 81, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, December 25, 2005, in his Sheridan home.

Smokey was born August 17, 1924, in Monarch, WY to Samuel & Mary Victoria (Pijanosky) Pilch.

Smokey grew up in Sheridan County.  Served in the U. S. Navy during WWII.  After the service, he returned to Sheridan and married Marjorie Jensen on April 17, 1945, in Hardin, MT.  He worked at the Rice Ranch for many years.  Then later he worked for Beckton Stock Farm.  Later they moved into Sheridan where he worked for the Sawmill until he retired.  Mrs. Pilch died in 1999.  Smokey was a member of the VFW and the American Legion.  He enjoyed bingo, fishing and camping in the mountains.  Smokey loved being with his family and people.

Smokey is survived by his son Andrew Pilch of Great Falls, MT; daughters Linda Cox of Wyarno, WY, Sherry Bonner of Billings, MT and Joan Cox of Draper, UT; brother Walter “Bud” Pilch of Ranchester, WY; sister Bernice Mincher of Hardin, MT; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Services will be at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Marilyn Rice
, 75, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, December 10, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Rice was born June 25, 1930 in La Crosse, Wisconsin to Paul and Mabel (Mclachlan) Wright.  She grew up and attended schools in La Crosse, graduating from Central High School in 1948. Mrs. Rice married Thomas Rice June 22, 1949 in Reedsburg, Wisconsin.  The Rice’s lived in Sparta, WI for 4 years before moving to central Minnesota before moving to WY in 1968.  Mrs. Rice moved to Sheridan, WY in 2004.

Mrs. Rice was preceded in death by her parents; one daughter; one grandson; and one brother.

She is survived by one son, Dan Rice, of Greybull, WY; two daughters, Ruth Giertych, of Gillette, WY, and Wanda Burton, of Sheridan, WY; 9 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Memorial services for Mrs. Rice will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, December 14, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating.  Private family graveside services will be held in Shell, WY at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


Jean Rosendahl, age 75, of Sheridan, WY died Thursday, December 15, 2005, in Deaconess Hospital, Billings, MT.

She was born November 30, 1930, in Rapid City, SD to Albert & Dorothy (Mollenbrink) Hansen.

The family came to Sheridan when she was a young girl.   She grew up in Sheridan and graduated from Sheridan High School.  Jean married Thomas Rosendahl on August 16, 1948, in Wheatland, WY.  They lived in Sheridan until moving to Great Falls, MT in 1954.  Mr. Rosendahl died in 1984.  Jean returned to Sheridan in 1989.  Jean was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan and had a great sense of humor.  She loved being with her family.  She was a member of Sunrise Assembly of God Church. 

Her father and a son Robert also preceded Jean in death.

Jean is survived by two sons Michael of Murchison, TX and Mark of Bloomington, MN; a daughter Kathy Kinsey of Poestenkill, NY; a sister Linda Baker of El Paso, TX; eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Wednesday (Dec. 21st) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with Pastor John Jackson officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Harvey A. Scott Sr., age 77, of Center, Nebraska, died on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at Lundberg Memorial Hospital in Creighton, Nebraska.

Funeral Services will be 10:00am on Friday, December 30, 2005, from United Pentecostal Church in Sheridan, Wyoming with the Rev. R.H. Robinson officiating.  Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Harvey was born on January 12, 1928 in Verdel, Nebraska to Charles Harvey and Alta Mae (Mills) Scott.  He grew up in Verdel and served in the U.S. Army from 1945 to 1946.  After the service he returned to Verdel where he farmed and did road construction.  He married Naomi F. Welch on January 9, 1956 in Sheridan.  After their marriage they lived in various states where Harvey continued to operate heavy equipment doing road construction and also worked as an electrician.  He retired in 1997 and moved to Center, Nebraska.

He was a member of the United Pentecostal Church in Norfolk, the Creighton American Legion Post 0074, and the Creighton VFW Post 1151.  Harvey loved to fish, hunt, and tinker with things.  He especially enjoyed the time he could spend with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Harvey is survived by his wife, Naomi of Center; children Neva Motacek of Elmendorf, Texas, Teresa Fitzpatrick of Sheridan, Wyoming, Harvey Jr. of Denver, Colorado, Elmer of Bend, Oregon; 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Fern Wassenburger of Casper, Wyoming, Rose Ann Martin of Hebron, Nebraska, Karen Fernau of Tule, Texas; 4 brothers, Earl Scott of Minatare, Nebraska, Marvin Scott of Niobrara, Lyle “John” Scott of Lindy, and Gene Scott of Creighton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Floyd, Lloyd, and Lawrence Scott, and 1 sister Violet Ebsen.


Charlotte Viola Stoldt, 44, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, December 13, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Stoldt was born September 26, 1961 in Odessa, TX to Don and Evelyn (Rettinghouse) Miller. She grew up and attended schools in Riverton, WY and graduated from Riverton High School.  Mrs. Stoldt married Glen R. Stoldt in Riverton May 9, 1991.  Charlotte was a housewife and mother.  She enjoyed collecting bears, making dream catchers, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

She was preceded in by her father; one son; and three sisters.

Charlotte is survived by her husband, Glen, of Sheridan, WY; one son, Rueben Wentz, of Casper, WY; two daughters, Tabitha Bougie, and Amanda Stoldt, both of Sheridan, WY; one brother; two sisters; and 7 grandchildren.

At Mrs. Stoldt’s request, cremation has taken place, and a private family service will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


Willard Ernest Studie, 85, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, December 11, 2005 at his residence.

Mr. Studie was born April 18, 1920 in Thurmond, Iowa to John and Rosa (Tyser) Study.  He grew up and attended schools in Iowa, and moved with his family to the Gillette area where his father bought and operated a family ranch.

Willard enlisted in the Army June 5, 1942 where he served in the Pacific and the European Theater.  He was discharged October 30, 1945.  After the service, Willard returned to WY and worked on various ranches as a cowboy and sheepherder, retiring in 1994.  Mr. Studie then lived in Arvada, WY until moving to Sheridan in 2005.

Mr. Studie was a member of the V. F. W., the American Legion, the Elk’s Lodge, the Eagles Lodge, and the Wyoming Pioneer Bird, Fish and Small Game organization of which he was a 50-year member.

Willard was preceded in death by his parents; 2 sons; 1 grandchild; 4 sisters; & 1 brother.

He is survived by two sons, Darreld Ernest Studie, of CA, and Dennis Duane Studie, of Pocatello, ID; 1 step-son, Shorty Reynolds, of Palmer, Alaska; four daughters, Debra Rose Studie, of Billings, MT, Deanna Lynn Studie, of Sheridan, WY, Denise Lorraine Studie, of Arvada, WY, and Della Jean Studie, of Gillette, WY; one brother, Brooks Study, of Sheridan, WY; 25 grandchildren; and numerous great grandchildren.

Visitation for Mr. Studie will be 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, December 15, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, December 16, 2005 at the Arvada Community Church with Pastor Bob Moore officiating.  Interment will be in the Arvada Cemetery, Arvada, WY.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
