GENERAL PUBLIC FLU CLINICS CONTINUE TODAY, TOMORROW & FRIDAY - The vaccine is coming in steadily to the Sheridan County Community Health office across from the County Courthouse on Main Street, and Judy Stallman has this word for the general public: [audio] . Judy gives us the schedule for today: [audio] . Don’t worry if you can’t make any of today’s clinics, because they’ll be giving shots on Thursday, too: [audio] . Rounding out the schedule, Judy indicates that you can drop by the Community Health office on Friday, December 2 from 2 to 4.  Each shot costs 20 dollars.

THE POST OFFICE HAS SOME HOLIDAY MAILING DEADLINES TO TELL US ABOUT - It IS that time of the year.  The Post Office has some gentle reminders for us: [audio] . That’s Mandy Baxter at the Sheridan Post Office who says you can wait until December 19th to send a package to a serviceperson overseas – but that would have to be via express mail. As far as mail here in the states, we’ve got a skotch more breathing room: [audio] . December 21st is the deadline for out of state priority mail.  [audio] . And Mandy has a word or two about the items you’ll be mailing.  Don’t use string on packages; it jams up their machines. And don’t try putting anything special in normal envelopes: [audio] . CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL SET FOR SATURDAY IN DAYTON - The holiday season usually assures us of always having something to do. Sheridan Media’s Ron Richter tells us about an upcoming event in Dayton. [audio] .

RED GRADE ROAD CLOSED AS OF THIS MORNING - You know winter has officially arrived when County Road 26, more affectionately known as Red Grade Road, is closed, and as of 7 this morning, only snow track vehicles and ATV’s are allowed to use the road. This decision comes upon the recommendation of the County Engineering office, Sheriff’s office, and Road and Bridge Department. Red Grade Road is closed annually in the winter from the “Willows” west, until opened in the spring.  A convenient turn around is provided at the snow machine parking area at the base of the mountain.

IT’S OFFICIAL.  THURSDAY’S POLICE COMMISSION HEARING WILL BE OPEN TO THE PUBLIC - Thursday’s long awaited Sheridan Police Civic Service Commission hearing WILL be open to the public – most of it anyway. Defense Attorney Harlan Rasmussen, in an exclusive interview, acknowledged to Sheridan Media: [audio] . Thursday’s hearing is expected to determine if the punishments recommended by Police Chief Mike Card should be carried out.  Card has recommended that Detective Chris Cook and Lieutenant Chris Dahmke be fired for their role in the DUI stop of Mayor Dave Kinskey July 9th.  A third police officer involved, James Arzi, was slated to be demoted and lose a rank in pay … but any punishment of Arzi was settled in a confidential agreement earlier this month.

TOMORROW IS THE BIG DAY WHEN THE SHERIDAN COUNTY MUSEUM OFFICIALLY OWNS THE FORMER BUBBA’S BARBEQUE BUILDING - After months of negotiating, fundraising and planning, tomorrow, November 30th, The Sheridan County Museum becomes the official owner of the former Bubba’s BBQ building.  Sheridan Media’s Mary Jo Johnson has the details: [audio] .

SHERIDAN ROADS ARE IN MUCH BETTER SHAPE THIS MORNING THAN THEY WERE 24 HOURS AGO - What a difference a day can make.  Yesterday at this time, Sheridan area roads were in tough shape with both blowing snow & black ice. A day later, most roadways are in much better shape.  Temperatures have remained below freezing though, and there are still slick spots out there. And while they’ve been working long hours to maintain city streets, Sheridan Assistant Public Works Director John Nowak says his crews will continue to assist when notified of a problem: [audio] . And Wyoming highways are in much better shape this morning with Interstates 90 & 25 both clear & open with no major delays.

SHERIDAN COUNTY’S DETENTION CENTER IS IN FOR SOME MORE CHANGES - Sheridan County’s Detention Center … still not complete … is about to go through some more changes -- non-planned changes. Sheriff Dave Hofmeier says much of it stems from a jail incident last week when an inmate went on a minor rampage: [audio] . A big part of the problem, Hofmeier says, is the current remodeling project.  It has meant that right now some cells & some inmate areas aren’t designed as they should be. That will change though: [audio] . The Sheridan County Jail renovation project, now pegged to cost some 7 point 3 million dollars, is expected to be completed by next summer.

CITY CREWS WILL BE OUT IN THE COLD PICKING UP LEAVES - Despite very cold temperatures expected in the next few days, City of Sheridan crews are out this morning picking up leaves.  Assistant Public Works Director John Nowak… [audio] . The city is offering up to 5 free trash bags for anyone to use for leaf collection and Nowak has some suggestions for you when you’re out in the yard. [audio] . This round of collections will go much faster than the first one earlier this month.  If you miss the pickup for your area the Sheridan Landfill always accepts compost materials, such as leaves, free of charge.

TONIGHT’S SHERIDAN’S BIG NIGHT – 10TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS STROLL IS HOURS AWAY – WHAT’S OUR WEATHER OUTLOOK? - Exactly one month from today, your living room floor may be strewn with wrapping paper and ribbon, as pretty packages are opened to reveal the special gifts inside.  Gifts possibly purchased at the annual Christmas Stroll, which kicks off at about 4 this afternoon. HOLIDAY TRAVEL-SOME TIPS FOR FLYING OUT OF SHERIDAN - Thanksgiving weekend is not only the busiest shopping time of the year but also the busiest travel weekend, at least as far as air travel is concerned.  Sheridan Media’s Mary Jo Johnson has the story: [audio] .

A WARNING FROM THE WYOMING HIGHWAY PATROL – OPERATION ‘CARE’ IS NOW IN EFFECT - The Wyoming Highway Patrol has an important message to those who will be on the highways this holiday week: [audio] . Sergeant Stephen Townsend tells us that ‘CARE’ stands for “Combined Accident Reduction Effort.”  Accidents will be reduced, Townsend says, by keeping an eye out for specific violations: [audio] . Operation CARE runs through Sunday night at midnight.  Operation CARE was successful during the 2004 Thanksgiving period.  There were zero fatalities reported statewide.

THE FORECAST FOR THE UPCOMING THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY WEEK LOOKS DRY WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES - This is the beginning of a big holiday week – including lots of congestion at airports and the biggest shopping day of the year. SO-CALLED “COOL” – OR “COUNTRY OF ORIGIN” LEGISLATION COULD BE BACK AGAIN - Two weeks ago we told you that “COOL” legislation – the so-called Country of Origin labeling bill – had been delayed for another 2 years in the U.S. Senate. Well, that’s not the end of the story.  Wyoming Senators Craig Thomas & Mike Enzi are now co-sponsoring legislation that would put COOL back on track. In the words of Senator Enzi: [audio] . The Enzi/Thomas legislation would put COOL into effect in 2006 and would mandate country of origin labeling on beef, lamb, pork, fish, fruits & vegetables.  We’ll keep you posted on its progress.

IF YOU’RE TRYING TO QUIT SMOKING – THERE’S HELP OUT THERE, AND IT’S FREE - You hear the ad campaigns encouraging you to quit tobacco.  You’re a tobacco user who deep down would like to kick a highly-addictive habit of smoking or chewing, but you’re not quite sure that you can quit.  There’s help … and hope. Dr. John Stamato tells tobacco users that it usually takes more than one attempt to quit, and that’s o-k: [audio] . And rumor has it that once a person quits smoking, their lungs will actually clear out somewhat, rather than having permanent damage.  That’s because the lungs are lined with tiny little scrub brushes called cilia: [audio] . And in this case, the hacker’s cough is a good thing, because all that crud is being removed. DAYTON TOWN COUNCIL SETS UP SPECIAL BANK ACCOUNT – KEEPS FAUCETS DRIPPING - The Dayton Town Council had a short agenda to attend to, but two important items were addressed – bank accounts and dripping faucets. Bank accounts, because the Town Council discussed opening a special Dayton Centennial Fund for next summer’s festivities.  Dayton Mayor Bob Wood tells us this isn’t so unusual: [audio] . THE SHERIDAN CITY COUNCIL’S ON THE FAST TRACK TO FIND A 3RD PERSON FOR THE POLICE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION - The search continues.  We’re talking about the search for a replacement for Dick Hammer on the 3-membere Sheridan Police Civil Service Commission.  Sheridan City Council President Kathy Kennedy says they’re on the fast track for filling the vacancy: [audio] . Adding to the urgency is the Commission presiding over a hearing into the disciplinary actions against the 3 police officers involved in last July’s DUI stop of Mayor Dave Kinskey.  That hearing is slated for December first.

SENATE BILL WOULD MAINTAIN ICBM LEVEL - The country’s nuclear missile stockpile has been slowly reduced since the end of the Cold War, and an upcoming Pentagon review is considering whether the number should be lowered further.  In an effort to stop that consideration, the U.S. Senate passed a sweeping defense bill that includes a provision urging the Pentagon to retain the nation's current level of nuclear missiles. The provision would urge the Pentagon to keep all of the missiles, stating that it is national policy not to decrease the current number. F-E Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne oversees 150 of the nation's 500 intercontinental ballistic missiles, and nuclear missiles are also based at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota and Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana

SHERIDAN SENIOR CENTER TO HOST MEDICARE PART ‘D’ SIGN UP - It’s official.   Starting today, senior citizens can enroll in Medicare’s new Part “D” drug benefit.  But many are wondering whether the “D” stands for “difficult.” No matter.  The Sheridan Senior Center is hosting a Part “D” program Wednesday morning that begins with a free breakfast. Senior Center Director Carmen Rideout has a schedule: [audio] . Again, that all begins Wednesday morning at 8 with free breakfast; the social security program is at 9 and the prescription sign up clinic begins at 9:30. The Senior Center?  It’s at 2-11 Smith Street … not far from the Main Library in Sheridan.
