Lorraine A. Brinkman, age 93, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, November 6, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Lorraine was born October 2, 1912, on the farm outside Veblen, S. Dakota, to Casper & Sara (Snortland) Risdall.

Lorraine grew up of the farm and graduated from Veblen High School.  She played on the varsity basketball team in high school.  Lorraine graduated from Bellingham Normal School, Bellingham, WA receiving her teaching degree.  She married John O. Lien on June 21, 1934, in Veblen, SD.  They lived on the farm and she cooked for the road crew of the Construction Company.  She organized and was the first President of the PTA in Veblen.  In 1953, they moved to Breckenridge, MN where she cooked and was the bookkeeper for the Construction Company.  They moved to Big Stone City, SD in 1958 where she was assist. Manager of KDIO radio and had her own radio program.  In 1962, they moved to Flandreau, SD and she worked at the Flandreau Indian School as a dorm mother.  Mr. Lien died in 1966.  Lorraine married Dr. Walter Brinkman on October 2, 1976, in Langford, SD.  She retired and they moved to Sisseton, SD.  Dr. Brinkman died in 1982.  In 1984, she moved to Black Hawk, SD to be near her brother.  Lorraine came to Sheridan in Sept. 2005, to be near her son.  Lorraine was a member of the Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church in S. Dakota.  She enjoyed her flower garden, traveling, crossword puzzles, making afghans and needle point.

Lorraine was also preceded in death by a daughter Sara Jane and two brothers Clayton & Jarvis Risdall.

Lorraine is survived by her son John Lien & wife Pat of Story, WY; daughter Mary Ollenburg & husband Robert Dickensheets of Seattle, WA; brother Earl Risdall & wife Jeanne of Rapid City, SD; five grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 2:00pm on Thursday (Nov. 10th) from Piedmont Valley Lutheran Church, Piedmont, SD with interment at 3:00pm on Friday in Veblen, SD.  Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Alma Amanda “Mandy” Frisbie, age 87, of Ranchester, WY died Thursday, November 3, 2005, in Sheridan Manor, Sheridan, WY.

Mandy was born August 4, 1918, in LaSalle Parish, Louisiana, to William & Doshie (Griffith) Golden.

She grew up in Louisiana.  She operated a restaurant in Gulfport, Mississippi, which was destroyed by Hurricane Camille.  She also worked in Utah and Alaska before moving to Ranchester with her sister Johnnie.  Mandy married Clinton Frisbie in Sheridan on April 2, 1988.  Mandy loved her family and enjoyed cooking, gardening, laughing and dancing. 

Mandy was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, sister Artilda Ann, brothers Sherman and Charles Edgar, half brother Bill Squyres and half sister Jule Batterby.

Mandy is survived by her sister Johnnie Mae Esters of Sheridan; Step son Dennis Frisbie of Sheridan; step daughter Ellen Johnson of Mobile, Alabama; a niece and several nephews. 

Graveside service will be 2:00pm on Monday (Nov. 7th) in Dayton Cemetery, Dayton, Wyoming, with Pastor R.H. Robinson officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Sherman C. Husted, 68, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, November 5, 2005 in the Sheridan V. A. Medical Center.

Mr. Husted was born may 13, 1937 in Kermit, TX to Lester Clark and Lola Ethel (Johnson) Husted.  He grew up and attended schools in the Dallas and Ft. Forth areas.

Mr. Husted joined the U. S. Navy June 10, 1955, and was honorably discharged June 9, 1959.  Sherman was a union carpenter for the Peter Kiewit Company, working all over the United States where he worked building bridges and dams.  He moved to Sheridan in 1994.

Mr. Husted married Patricia Lutz October 12, 1962 in Watertown, SD.

Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, and four sisters.

He is survived by his wife, Pat, of Sheridan, WY; two daughters, Lola Marie Rogers, of Tekamah, NB, and Penny Ann Sauerbrey, and husband, Jack, of Columbus, OH; one son, William Clark Husted, and wife, Bobbie, of Sheridan, WY; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation for Mr. Husted will be from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday, November 8, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home.  Funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kent Bahruth officiating.  Cremation will follow the service with private family inurnment of cremains in Willow Grove Cemetery, Buffalo, WY.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Laura Jackson, age 75, of Sheridan, WY died Tuesday, November 8, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.

Laura was born March 16, 1930, in Corson County, S. Dakota, to Adam & Wilhelmina Rieger.

Laura married Donald E. Jackson in January 19, 1947, in Mobridge, S. Dakota.  They raised three sons on a farm near Glenham, S. Dakota for 25 years.  In 1972, they moved to Mobridge, SD where they lived until 1990 when they moved to Harlingen, Texas.  They moved to Sheridan, WY in 2005 to be closer to family.  Laura was a member of the Women of the Moose and the Congregational Church.  Laura loved her family and enjoyed playing cards and sports events on TV. 

Laura was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Laura is survived by her husband; three sons Russell & wife Dorothy of Maple Grove, MN, Allen & wife Madonna of Sheridan, WY and Michael & wife Caroline of Broomfield, CO; two sisters Minnie Rau of Selby, SD and Frieda Wessel of Rapid City, SD; six grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Monday (Nov. 14th) from Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home, Rapid City, SD with Father Michel Mulloy officiating.  Interment will be in Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, SD.  Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home, Sheridan.


Mary Alice Newbigging, 98, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, November 10, 2005 in Westview Health Care Center.

Mrs. Newbigging was born August 5, 1907 in Kleenburn, WY to Clinton Robert and Ethel Inez (Walker) Ulery.  She grew up in the Decker, MT and Sheridan, WY area, and attended various schools including Taylor, Meade Creek, and Sheridan High School.  She and Bill Newbigging were married on September 6, 1929 in Sheridan by Slim Hume, the Sheridan County Clerk.

Mrs. Newbigging was a homemaker and worked with her husband in their sawmill and building their various rental houses.  She enjoyed playing the piano, reading, socializing, and making different wildberry jellies.  She enjoyed all of the people and visitors that she met throughout her life, and sharing her life story with everyone.  She especially enjoyed going for rides in the country & the mountains, and she loved fresh flowers.

Mrs. Newbigging was preceded in death by her husband, Bill; her parents; & 3 brothers.

She is survived by one daughter, Marcella Woods, of Sterling, AK; 3 grandsons; 1 grand daughter; 4 great grandsons; 2 great granddaughters; 1 step-great granddaughter; and 3 great, great grand children.

At Mrs. Newbigging’s request, cremation has taken place and a private family service will be held at a later date.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.   


Adrian F. Peterson, 83, of Sheridan, WY, died Monday, November 28, 2005 Sheridan Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Peterson was born May 4, 1922 in Bridgeport, CT to Roy L. and Agnes (McGoldrick) Peterson.  He grew up and attended schools in Washington, CT, graduating from Gunnery Prep School with the class of 1940.  Adrian enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps in February of 1942, and served in Brazil and North Africa.  Mr. Peterson was separated from the service in 1946.  He was recalled to active duty with the United States Air Force in 1950.

Mr. Peterson married Thelma Isakson in Great Falls, MT in 1951 and almost immediately received orders to serve during the Korean Conflict.  Adrian was stationed in South Carolina, Michigan, and was transferred to Francis E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, WY in 1959 as one of the first missile personnel at the base where he served actively with the Strategic Air Command, retiring in 1967.

In 1972 the Peterson’s found a home in Dayton, WY where they owned and operated Tongue River Antiques for more than 30 years.  Mr. Peterson was a strong community leader, serving on the Dayton Town Council for over a decade.  Adrian was a weather watcher for the National Weather Service for 25 years. 

Mr. Peterson was a member of the First Congregational Church-U. C. C. in Sheridan, the Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite Bodies, Kalif Shrine, and the American Legion.

Adrian was a passionate fly fisherman, enjoyed gardening, wood refinishing, was an avid sports fan, and Patriot.  He was a gentle soul who loved life, his wife, his sons, and his granddaughters, and enjoyed visiting with everyone. He will be sorely missed.

Mr. Peterson was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother.

Adrian is survived by his wife, Thelma, of Sheridan, WY; two sons, Bob and Dave Peterson, of Sheridan, WY; one sister, Bernice Perret, of North Grandby, CT; and 4 granddaughters. 

At Mr. Peterson’s request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service for Adrian will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, December 2, 2005 at the First Congregational Church-U. C. C., 100 W. Works St., Sheridan, with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Myrna M. Ritchie, 80, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, November 16, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. 

Mrs. Ritchie was born July 7, 1925 in Vermont to Edward and Wenoa (Moore) Simons.  She grew up and attended schools in Vermont and graduated from high school there.  Mrs. Ritchie spent most of her life on the East Coast before moving to Colorado Springs, CO in 1995. She moved to Sheridan, WY five years ago to be near her daughter.

Mrs. Ritchie enjoyed sewing, gardening, and traveling when her son was in the service.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mrs. Ritchie is survived by two sons, Alan Ritchie, of Newbury, New Hampshire, & Dale Ritchie, of Laurel, Maryland; two daughters, Lynn Scott, of Colorado Springs, CO, and Linda Brownell, of Sheridan, WY; 4 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews.

At Mrs. Ritchie’s request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Malcolm “Ward” Scroggin, 55, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Ward was born July 11, 1950 in Bingham Canyon, UT to Shirl K. and Isabell (Rose) Scroggin.  He grew up and attended schools in Bingham Canyon and Sandy, UT.  Ward was the last crossing guard at Bingham Central School.  He graduated from Jordan High School in Sandy in 1968.  Ward then attended the University of Utah where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1973, and received his Master’s of Science degree in 1976.

Ward started working for Kennecott Energy in 1974 while he was still in college, and was a Human Resource Manager, retiring from Kennecott after 31 years of service.  He had a full and successful career in the Human Resource field.  Ward moved to Sheridan, WY in 1998. 

Ward married Noreen St. Martin August 1, 1998 in Manila, Utah.

 Ward was an Eagle Scout, enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating, trap shooting, and bike riding.  He was kind and generous to everyone he met, and especially enjoyed spending time with his wife, family, and friends.

Ward was preceded in death by his father.

He is survived by his wife, Noreen, of Sheridan, WY; four sons, John St. Martin, of Denver, CO, Travis Scroggin, of Herriman, UT, Michael St. Martin, and wife, Amanda, of Craig, CO, and Daniel Scroggin, of West Jordan, UT; one daughter, Shannon St. Martin, of Sheridan, WY; his mother, Isabell Scroggin, of Sandy, UT; two brothers, Kevin Scroggin, and wife, Jean, of Midland, Michigan, and Ted Scroggin, and wife, Barb, of Evanston, WY; one grandson, Holden St. Martin; one grand daughter, Isabell St. Martin; a niece, Anissa; a nephew, Trey, as well as other loving nieces and nephews. 

Visitation for Ward will be from 12:30 P.M. until 1:30 P.M. Thursday, November 10, 2005 at the Goff Mortuary in Midvale, Utah.  A Celebration of Life for Ward will be 2:00 P. M. in  the Goff Mortuary Chapel in Midvale.  Graveside services will be 4:00 P.M. Friday, November 11, 2005 in the Craig Cemetery in Craig, CO.  Local arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Noreen and family welcome friends to call or stop by the family home at 329 Barn Owl Court to visit and share memories of Ward anytime on Tuesday, November 8th.

Mary J. Snyder, age 93, of Sheridan, WY died Saturday, November 12, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center.

Mary was born November 4, 2005, in Karneyville, WY to Joseph & Eva (Kuzma) Gorzalka.

She grew up and attended schools in the Sheridan area.  She worked as housekeeper on the John Kerns Ranch.  Mary married Orville ‘Jake’ Woods on January 5, 1936.  They lived in Parkman and ran the gas station.  Mr. Woods died in 1950.  She then worked as a mail carrier.  Mary married Milas Snyder on May 26, 1951.  They moved to south of Sheridan.  Mr. Synder died in 1986.  She enjoyed gardening, sewing and embroidery.  She loved animals especially horses.  Mary was a member of the LDS Church and the Relief Society and also the Parkman Women’s Club.

Mary was also preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, four sisters and a grandson Casey.

Mary is survived by her son Joe Woods of Sheridan; two daughters Eva Bishop and Betty Shassetz both of Sheridan; six grandchildren, 14 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be 10:00am on Wednesday (Nov. 16th) from the LDS Church. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit the LDS Church Hardship Fund.


Estella E. Stephenson, age 84, of Ranchester, WY died Thursday, November 10, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County, Sheridan, WY.

Estella was born May 26, 1921, near Ranchester to Herbert & Emma (Leis) Fackenthal.

She grew up and graduated high school in Ranchester.  Estella married Raymond Stephenson on March 7, 1940, in Billings, MT.  She lived in Ranchester her whole life.
Estella was a member of Ranchester Community Church.  She enjoyed sewing, gardening, yard sales, reading, especially western books, collecting dolls, going out for dinner and her cats and dogs.  Estella loved her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister Frances and one brother George.

Estella is survived by her daughter Linda Anderson of Ranchester; son Stuart Stephenson of Long Beach, CA; three grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter.

Private family services will be later.  Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
