July 2005 Obituaries
Thomas L. Barker, 62, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, July 14, 2005 at his residence. Mr. Barker was born July 12, 1943 in New York, NY to Arthur Jarret (Tom) and Margaret Montgomery (Brown) Barker. He grew up and attended schools in Buffalo, WY, and graduated from Johnson County High School in Buffalo. Tom then attended the University of Wyoming where he received a Bachelors of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1964. Tom married Cheryl Allyn Elliott March 20, 1971 in Saratoga, WY. He was in the Peace Corps from 1965 to 1968 serving in Loha, Ecuador. Tom returned to U. W. and received a Master of Economics’ in 1970. Tom was a member of the Wyoming National Guard from 1969 to 1975. Mr. Barker was with the Wyoming State Engineers Office in Cheyenne, WY from 1970 to 1973, and with VTN Engineering from 1973 to 1976. In 1976, Tom & Jerome Mark founded Centennial Engineering in Sheridan which later became CER Professional Consultants with Tom as sole owner. Tom was a member of the Lion’s Club, a former chairman
of the Sheridan County He enjoyed inventing new concepts and equipment for standard procedures and developing land with the home owner’s pleasures in mind. Tom developed the dust lock for roads, automated the 5th wheel hookup, developed the firewood factory in Sheridan, among many other concepts and designs. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Tom was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his wife, Cheryl, of Sheridan, WY; two sons, Tab Barker, of Austin, TX, and Gary Barker, & wife, Michelle, of Edwards Air Force Base, CA; one daughter, Annie Barker, of Bangor, Maine; his mother, Margie Barker, of Buffalo, WY; one sister, Helen Mathes, & husband, George, of Buffalo, WY; 2 grandchildren, Elle and Xavier Barker, of CA; & three nieces, Mandy Hagler, and Julie and Sarah Mankin. Visitation for Tom will be from 3:00 P.M. to 6:00 P.M. Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service for Tom will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 20, 2005 at the First Congregational Church, 100 W. Works St., Sheridan, WY with Pastor Bob Miller officiating. A private family interment will be held at a later date. A reception will be held in the Atrium at the Holiday Inn immediately following the service. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Works St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Byron Charles Chamberlain, Jr., (“Pogo”), a talented artist, athlete, and educator, lost his battle with cancer on July 25, 2005. He was born in Billings, MT on June 17, 1953 to Dorothy (Halvorsen) and Byron Chamberlain, Sr. Viewing will be 6 PM – 8 PM on Friday, July 29th at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. A celebration of Byron’s life will be held on Saturday, July 30 at 10 AM at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. David Duprey officiating. The wearing of bright colors is requested. Byron was active in sports his entire life. He participated in track, basketball and football, and quarterbacked the Billings Senior High Broncs during his junior and senior years. Byron graduated from Billings Senior in 1971 and continued his education and football career, first at Rocky Mountain College and then at Eastern Montana College. Byron graduated from Eastern in 1976 with degrees in both Business and Art. He worked as a commercial artist for a year before returning to Eastern where he earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education and Guidance Counseling. In 1979, Byron accepted a position with Sheridan County School District #2. He served as a Learning Specialist and then as a School Counselor at both Sheridan Junior and Senior High Schools for the next 26 years. On June 19, 1982 Byron married Jane Howe in Miles City, MT. Coaching was one of Byron’s passions. He coached basketball, football and track at Sheridan Junior High School. During the 13 years he was an assistant football coach at Sheridan High School, the Broncs won the state championship three times. Byron also coached his own children for many years in community sports. Byron loved walking with his wife, snowboarding, and spending time with his family. The YMCA proved to be a favorite hangout for handball. He had a terrific sense of humor, a love of old movies (particularly those from the 70’s), and the ability to play the piano or organ by ear. Survivors include Jane, his wife of 23 years, his daughter Kelsey (21), and son Beau (18), all of Sheridan; his parents of Billings, MT; two sisters, Mary Ann Connors of Billings MT and Lori Herbaugh of Littleton, CO; and 10 nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the Byron Chamberlain Scholarship Fund in care of Kay Roush, First Federal Savings Bank, Box 6007, Sheridan, WY 82801 Robert Eugene Cole, age 56, of Story, WY died Tuesday, July 26, 2005, in the V.A. Medical Center, Sheridan, WY Robert was born February 2, 1949, in Gillette, WY to Robert & Elizabeth (Hubbard) Cole. Robert grew up and graduated high school in Midwest, WY. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served in Viet Nam at Phu Cat Air Base obtaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. After the service, he returned to Midwest and went to work for Amoco Oil. Robert married Kathryn Anderson on February 20, 1975, in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He also worked in Dickinson, ND and Evanston, WY. In 1986, he left Amoco Oil and moved to Dayton, WY where he purchased Stockman’s. He sold Stockman’s in 1998 and moved to Story, WY. He was a member of the VFW. Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing, horseback riding, rodeo, country music and loved being with his friends. Robert was preceded in death by his mother Elizabeth. Robert is survived by his son Josh Cole of Sheridan, daughter Rewa Cole of Windsor, CO, father Robert Edgar Cole of Story, sister Cheryl Pesicka of Casper, WY and one grandson. Memorial service will be 2:00pm on Saturday (Aug. 6th) from Grace Chapel Church in Story with the Rev. Arden Haeffner officiating. Inurnment of cremains will be in Oregon Trail State Cemetery. Mrs. Driskill was born August 6, 1929 in Decorah, Iowa to Wellington and Leora (Gremm) Foltz. She grew up and attended schools in Decorah, Iowa and Springfield, IL. Dorothy married John Driskill June 12, 1993. She was a supervisor at Horace Mann Insurance. Mrs. Driskill enjoyed quilting and playing cards. She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, and 2 husbands. Mrs. Driskill is survived by two daughters, Linda Amundesen, and Fay Foss; one sister, Delores Prosperini; 4 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. A memorial service for Mrs. Driskill will be 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 28, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating. A reception will immediately follow the service at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 301 E. Brundage St. Visitation for Mrs. Driskill will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Hager, age 67, of Sheridan, WY died Sunday, July 10, 2005, in Billings, MT Joyce was born June 11, 1938, in Hardin, MT to Oscar “Ole” & Minnie (Kilcher) Landon. She grew up in Montana and graduated from high school in Lodge Grass, MT. Joyce attended Billings Business College. On June 7, 1958, Joyce married Oscar Hager in Lodge Grass. She cooked on ranches until they moved to Missouri where they ranched and she also worked as a secretary. They moved to the Sheridan area in 1976 and ranched. In 1980, they moved to Cohagen, MT where they ranched and she also drove school bus. They moved to Sheridan in 1987 where she later worked at Wal Mart. She enjoyed raising flowers, sewing and taking care of people. Joyce loved her grandchildren and her dog Dash. Her son Rusty, her parents and two sisters, preceded Joyce in death. Joyce is survived by her husband Oscar; son Randol & wife Maureen of Elko, Nevada; daughters Cindy Hager of Sheridan and Sonya Mallett & husband Monte of Billings, MT; four sisters Donna Esp of Hardin, MT, Lucile Love of Billings, MT and Flora Clark of Hardin, MT; four grandchildren Moriah, Chelsey, Erin and Brandon Hager. Memorials may benefit the Horizon Hospice Home, Box 35033, Billings, MT 59107 Myrtle Elizabeth “Teeta” Schilling, 86, of Ranchester, WY, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005 in Sheridan Manor. Mrs. Schilling was born May 3, 1919 in Billings, MT to Andrew and Myrtle E. (Weldon) Vasby. She grew up and attended schools in Billings and graduated from Billings High School where she was a member of the Honor Society. After high school, Mrs. Schilling attended Polytechnic Institute in Billings, and while attending college worked at the Billings Public Library. Teeta married Otto W. Schilling June 30, 1939 in Billings, MT. During W. W. II Mrs. Schilling worked at Mountain States Telephone in Billings. The couple moved to Casper, WY and Mrs. Schilling managed “Chet’s Toy Store” for many years. Upon retirement in 1983 the couple moved to the family home in Ranchester, WY. Mrs. Schilling was a past member of the Oakleaf Chapter #6 Order of the Eastern Star in Cheyenne, WY, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Cheyenne, Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Casper, WY, and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Sheridan. Teeta was an avid doll collector and a gifted seamstress specializing in doll clothing. She sold doll cloths for many years at the Sheridan Center Bazaar to the delight of many young children. Teeta was an expert at crossword puzzles, and enjoyed playing contract bridge. She loved to read and enjoyed watching the birds and wild animals in her yard. Teeta was a baseball fan dating back to her youth in Billings watching her stepfather play. Mrs. Schilling was preceded in death by her parents and one sister. Teeta is survived by her husband, Otto, of Ranchester, WY; two sons, Mike Schilling, of Cheyenne, WY, and Steve Schilling, of Gillette, WY; one brother, George Pfaff, of Las Vegas, NV; 6 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren. At Mrs. Scilling’s request, cremation has taken place, and no services are planned. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Alger St., Sheridan, WY 82801, or to the charity of the donor’s choice. Edward F. Westphal, 77, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, July 19, 2005 in Sheridan Manor. Mr. Westphal was born June 30, 1928 in Janesville, Wisconsin to Edward and Olive Westphal. He grew up in Janesville, and attended the Northwestern Military Academy in Janesville, graduating in 1946. Mr. Westphal was a veteran of the U. S. Army. Edward was a tool and dye machinist for most of his life, working for Acme Eyelet Company in St. Charles, Illinois, and owed his own machine shop in Maywood, Illinois for a short time. He lived in Villa Park, Illinois for 30 years before moving to Sheridan, WY in July of 2002. Mr. Westphal married Janice Gilgallon August 29, 1966 in Chicago, Illinois. Edward’s greatest joy was cooking and barbecuing. He was known as a work-a-holic. Mr. Westphal was preceded in death by his parents, and one aunt. He is survived by his wife Janice, of Sheridan, WY; one son, Robert Westphal; two daughters, Marie and Karen Westphal; two stepdaughters, Stacie Boehm, of Sheridan, WY, and Bonnie Davidson, of Streamwwood, Illinois; 5 step-grandchildren; and 3 step-great grandchildren. Graveside service for Mr. Westphal will be 11:00 A.M. Monday, July 25, 2005 in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with Pastor Tim Charles officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
