June 2005 Obituaries
Leon C. Cook, 96, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, June 25, 2005 in Westview Health Care Center. Mr. Cook had lived in Sheridan the past 46 years, coming from Gillette & Clearmont, WY where he had resided for 43 years. Mr. Cook was born February 26, 1909 in Mason City, Nebraska to Arden and Bertha (Hauck) Cook. The family moved to a homestead 35 miles south of Gillette, WY when Leon was 7 years old. Mr. Cook attended country schools and graduated from Campbell County High School in 1929. Leon married Nola Osborn November 20, 1930 in Gillette. The couple rented the Loyd Rust place south of Gillette for 19 years where Mr. Cook farmed, and raised sheep and cattle. Two children were born during this time, Edward Cook, and Helen Cook Mitchell. Mr. Cook also sold Farm Bureau Auto Insurance, and was one of their first agents. In 1950, the Cook’s bought one of the Leiter estate ranches belonging to John Rice on Clear Creek near Clearmont and raised beets, wheat, oats, alfalfa, and raised registered Columbia sheep. The Cooks sold the ranch in 1958 to George Schuman and moved to Sheridan where Mr. Cook went to work for K. B. Tractor Co. as parts manager. While working for K. B. Tractor Co. Leon received a Sheridan Press Friendliness-Courtesy award. Leon retired in 1968 due to a shoulder injury. Mrs. Cook passed away on January 12, 1959. Mr. Cook married Lucile Johnson in Sheridan in February of 1963, and she passed away in March of 1998. Mr. Cook resided in Sugarland Ridge from 1999 to 2003 when he moved to Westview Health Care Center. Mr. Cook belonged to the Sheridan Gem and Mineral Society, was a life member of Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520, the Fraternal Order of Eagles #186, and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows #19 in Sheridan. He loved to cut and polish rocks, making miniature furniture and creating airplanes from aluminum cans, and had many other crafts. Leon volunteered a lot of his time at the YMCA getting memberships. He showed movies at the Sheridan Manor, belonged to the Polka Club, attended fiddlers contests, festivals, going on field trips, and sightseeing in their camper. Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his parents, both wives, & one sister. Leon is survived by one son, Edward Cook, of Buffalo, WY; one daughter, Helen Mitchell, of Sheridan, WY; 5 stepchildren; 7 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; and 2 great, great grandchildren. Funeral service for Mr. Cook will be 2:00 P.M. Thursday, June 30, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with officers of the Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520 officiating. Interment will be in the Elk’s Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials in memory of Mr. Cook may be made to the Elk’s Building Fund, the Sheridan Senior Center, or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Mr. Crist was born March 18, 1914 in Wichita, Kansas to Edward Joseph and Mary (Billau) Crist. He grew up and attended schools in Wichita, graduating from Wichita High School. He then attended college for two years. John joined the U. S. Army in 1942, was discharged in 1944. After the service, John returned to Kansas, and went to work on the railroad, which eventually brought him to Wyoming. John met Janet Ballard at the WYO Theater where she was an usherette. The couple married in Hardin, MT on August 7, 1946. John and Janet moved to Greybull, WY where John worked on the railroad for three years before returning to Sheridan where John went to work at Cooper Plumbing. He later became a partner in Cooper-Crist Plumbing, and eventually became the soul owner of Crist Plumbing and Heating in Sheridan. Upon his “retirement” in 1998, John became a greeter at Wal-Mart and was with them for 5 years, finally retiring in 2003 at the age of 89. John later moved into Sheridan Manor. Mr. Crist was a member of Masonic Lodge #8, in Sheridan, the Wichita Scottish Rite Bodies, Kalif Shrine, Friendship Chapter #51, Order of the Eastern Star, and Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520. He enjoyed the collecting of many things, including coins, stamps, trains, and especially enjoyed spending time with his family. John was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife, Janet, in 2001. Mr. Crist is survived by 4 sons, Edward John Crist, II, of Cheyenne, WY, Jeffery L. Crist, of Sheridan, WY, J. Paul Kim Crist, of Jacksonville, FL, and Nicholas O. Crist, of Oxnard, CA; 1 daughter, Candace Crist, of Sheridan, WY; 1 sister, Aileen Eshelman, of Rockwall, TX; and 5 grandchildren. At Mr. Crist’s request, cremation has taken place a celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Bill was born in Aldine, Indiana, on October 1, 1912, to William, Sr. and Ida May (Decker) Donnelly. His parents homesteaded a few miles north of Lost Springs, WY in 1918. He attended schools in Lost Springs and eventually started working in Douglas, WY where he met Leota M. Schneider. They were married on January 12, 1935, in Chadron, NE. They lived in Casper, WY and then moved to Sheridan in 1945. Sheridan has been their home except for a two-year stay in Pinedale, WY two years in Buffalo, WY and two years in Billings, Montana. Bill spent the majority of his business career in the trucking industry. He had the Donnelly Freight Line after WWII and retired from the Donnelly Moving and Storage Company in 1979. Mrs. Donnelly died in July 2001. Bill enjoyed performing in some of the local plays and dramas as well as fishing and playing golf. He was a member of the Big Horn Masonic Lodge #43, Scottish Rite Bodies, Jesters and a life member of the Kalif Shrine. He served as the recorder of the Shrine on two separate occasions and is the only Kalif Shrine Recorder Emeritus. Bill is survived by sons W. John Donnelly of Denver, CO and Howard Donnelly of Ballwin, MO; daughters Mary Jo MacIntyre of Billings, MT and June Bato of Billings, MT; eight grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Memorial service will be 10:00am on Saturday (June 11th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev.’s Don Derryberry and Ray Clark officiating. Interment of cremains will be in the Masonic Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Frazier, 84, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, June 19, 2005 in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Billings, MT. Mr. Frazier was born June 19, 1921 in Warren, PA to John and Edith (Owens) Frazier. He married Evelyn Jump in Endwell, NY on April 17, 1943, and the couple was married for 60 years. Mrs. Frazier died December 16, 2003. Mr. Frazier joined the Army in 1943 and was a clerk and mechanic in the Army stationed primarily in California. After his discharge in 1945 the Frazier’s made their home in Warren, PA where they raised three daughters. Mr. Frazier was a machinist for GTE/Sylvania for many years, retiring in 1982 as a machine shop inspector. Ken and Evelyn enjoyed attending square dances and were members of clubs in Pennsylvania, Arizona, California, and Wyoming. Mr. Frazier was a gifted musician and played the guitar, mandolin, and harmonica. He enjoyed attending any local dance and had friends in all of the local bands. He was a member of the Big Horn Mountain Polka Club, and was recognized as the “Peanut Brittle Man.” After his retirement in 1982, Mr. and Mrs. Frazier spent their summers in the Sheridan area and winters in California and Lake Havasu City, AZ. Mr. Frazier was a member of the Sheridan Elk’s Lodge #520 and attended the lodge in Lake Havasu City. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, a generous friend, and loving father. Ken was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Evelyn; three brothers; one sister; and four children. Mr. Frazier is survived by three daughters, Esther Samuelson, of Reminderville, OH, Arlene Pixley, Upton, WY, and Kendra Grenesko, of St. Petersburg, FL; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Visitation for Mr. Frazier will be from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Thursday, June 23, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Mrs. Frazier was cremated at the time of her death, and a graveside service for Mrs. and Mrs. Frazier will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 24, 2005 in the Elk’s Section of Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating with military rites for Mr. Frazier by the Wyoming National Guard and American Legion Post #7. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Wyoming, passed away on Sunday, June 5, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of
Sheridan County after suffering pneumonia. Thelma Elizabeth Landen, age 95, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, June 11, 2005, in Sheridan Manor. Thelma was born in a tent on a ranch in northern Sheridan County on November 27, 1909, to Calvin E. and Margaret (Morgan) Erbaugh. Her parents homesteaded shortly after on a ranch on Young’s Creek in southern Montana, where she was raised. Thelma graduated from Sheridan High School in 1927, where she attended Normal Training during her senior year, and began teaching in a rural elementary school immediately upon graduation. By attending night school, summer school, and taking correspondence courses, while teaching full-time, she earned a BA in Elementary Education from the University of Wyoming in 1955. She taught in the elementary schools of rural Sheridan County for 37 years, spending the last 17 years as 1st grade teacher in the Tongue River School District. Thelma married Si Landen on March 4, 1929, at Hardin, Montana. He passed away January 15, 1972. Also preceding her in death were her parents, and three brothers-Alonzo, Philip, and Lawrence Erbaugh. Survivors include her daughter, Halene Graves and husband, Chuck, of Sheridan; two grandchildren, Stephen Pince of Riverton, WY, and Lisa Pince of Oakland, CA; two great-grandchildren, Eric and Stephanie Pince of Riverton; and several nieces and nephews. Thelma was very active in her community all her life, especially in the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years as well as working with United Methodist Women. She was an excellent seamstress and in later years was known for making purses out of recycled denim. She also spent many happy hours playing pinochle, dominoes and scrabble at the Sheridan Senior Center and was widely recognized for her almost daily walks within the community. She was a member of Daughters of the Nile, AARP, Wyoming Education Association, Sheridan Retired School Employees, Sheridan Woman’s Club and was a charter member and past president of Kappa Chapter, Delta Kappa Gamma. Cremation has taken place and services will be held at the Untied Methodist Church at 2:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 15th with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Memorials may be made in her honor to the Sheridan Senior Center, the United Methodist Church, or the charity of the donor’s choice. Kent A. Moore, 67, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, June 12, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mr. Moore was born October 14, 1937 in Sheridan, WY to Kenneth S. and Ruby Nell (Hamer) Moore. He grew up and attended schools in Sheridan, and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1955. Mr. Moore then attended Omaha University for 4 years. Kent was a licensed water treatment plant operator, and had worked for the Sheridan Water Treatment facility. He also raised cattle and mined for monazite, a rare earth metal. Mr. Moore had also been a member of the Wyoming National Guard. He enjoyed cattle, mining, and flowers, and loved local and western history. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother. He is survived by one brother, Kerry Moore, of North Glenn, CO; and several nieces and nephews. At Mr. Moore’s request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Kevin Jones officiating. Ridge Rd., Sheridan, WY 82801 Wilbur Neil “Pally” Pallesen, 67, of Sheridan, WY, died Wednesday, June 22, 2005 in Sheridan Manor. Mr. Pallesen was born December 12, 1937 in Hanna, WY to Wilbur and Anne (Annala) Pallesen. He grew up on a ranch 32 miles north of Hanna and attended school in the Leo community. Mr. Pallesen graduated from Hanna High School in 1956. After graduation, Mr. Pallesen worked on a dude ranch in Montana in the summer, and in Arizona in the winter. He then worked on the Chase Angus Ranch in Sheridan County until moving to Hanna to work in the coal mine. Mr. Pallesen was in the Army from 1961 to 1963, and married Pauline Botner in 1964. The couple was divorced in 1978. Mr. Pallesen returned to ranch work for a short time, and then went to work in the construction industry. He was a member of the Elk’s Lodge for several years, and was always ready to go team roping. Mr. Pallesen was preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters. He is survived by two daughters, Leah Dickerson, of Macon, Missouri, and Lynn Pirreca, of Tampa, FL; one sister, Karen Hiatt, of Sinclair, WY; and 4 grandchildren. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial graveside service for Mr. Pallesen will be held in the Hanna Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Ginnie Powell, 64, of Sheridan, WY, died Thursday, June 16, 2005 in Sheridan Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Powell in Phoenix, AZ to Leslie and June (Gush) Spidle. She grew up and attended schools in Arizona, and graduated from high school in 1958. Mrs. Powell moved to Salem, OR where she met Roger Powell. The couple was married in McMinnville, OR in 1970. Mr. and Mrs. Powell lived in Oregon before moving to Powell, WY, then moved to Sheridan, WY in 1970. Mrs. Powell worked in various motels as a housekeeper. She enjoyed flowers, plants, and working in her yard. She was preceded in death by her parents. Mrs. Powell is survived by her husband, Roger Powell, of Sheridan, WY; three sons, Brian Powell, of Sheridan, Brice Powell, of South Bend, Indiana, and Frank Powell, of California; and one grandchild. At Mrs. Powell’s request, cremation has taken place, and

Home. Robert Eugene Waugh, Jr., 51, of Story, WY, died Tuesday, June 7, 2005 in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Mr. Waugh was born December 20, 1953 in Emporia, KS to Robert Eugene and Margaret Ellen (Gaughan) Waugh, Sr. He grew up in Reading, Olivet, and Goodland, KS, graduating from Goodland High School in 1971. Robert went to work for the Rock Island Railroad in July of 1971 in Goodland as a fireman, and received his Engineer training in Goodland. Mr. Waugh moved to the Denver area where he continued working for the Rock Island Railroad. He signed on with Burlington Northern Railroad in 1977 as a locomotive engineer at Edgemont, SD, and transferred to the Sheridan Division in 1990, residing in Story, WY. Robert went on disability due to poor health in 2005, officially retiring in May of 2005. Robert married Christee Brozovsky in Cripple Creek, CO on April 3, 1982, and they were divorced in 1997. He married Genie C. Szewc October 17, 1997 in Buffalo, WY, and they divorced in 2002. Mr. Waugh was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers where he held various offices. He was a member of the Catholic Church and attended Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Story. Robert was an avid hunter, fisherman, golfer, and camper. He loved the outdoors, especially the mountains, and considered himself a “mountain man.” Robert is survived by his parents, Robert and Margaret Waugh, SR, of Goodland, KS; 3 brothers, Tom Waugh, of Ocean Shores, WA, Mike Waugh, of Spearfish, SD, and Scott Waugh, of Goodland, KS; 3 sisters, Catherine Waugh, of Manhattan, KS, Marcia Honer, Coppell, TX, and Lynn Waugh, of Manhattan, KS; and nine nieces and nephews. At Mr. Waugh’s request, cremation has taken place, and a memorial Mass will be 10:00 A.M. Friday, June 10, 2005 at Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Thomas Ogg as Celebrant. Connor St., Sheridan, WY 82801 Esther White, age 95, of Sheridan, WY died Monday, June 6, 2005, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County. Esther was born September 15, 1909, in Greeley, CO to James & Elizabeth (Oglivie) Brown. She came to Sheridan as a young child, attended schools and graduated high school in Sheridan. Esther graduated from nursing school in 1930 and went to work at Memorial Hospital. She married Theodore “Sam” White on April 26, 1935, in Sheridan. During WWII, they moved to Washington state where she worked in the shipyards. After the war, they moved to Findley, Ohio, for a couple of years and then returned to Sheridan. She returned to work at Memorial Hospital and worked there until she retired in 1974. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary. Esther enjoyed flowers, crafts, sewing and gardening. She loved animals especially her cats. Esther was preceded in death by her husband in 1960; daughter Barbara Bocek in 1990; stepson Robert White and Marilyn Benjamin. Esther is survived by one niece, one nephew, a daughter-in-law, and one step grandson. Graveside service will be at 2:00pm on Wednesday (June 8th) in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev.
