James Michael Lannan, patriarch of a family of nine sons and three daughters, died in his sleep Friday at Sheridan Memorial Hospital after a long illness. He was 78.
A native of Sheridan, Jim owned and operated Lannans Paint and Decorating Center for 15 years. He purchased the business at the age of 50, following a career that comprised work as a mail carrier, an insurance agent, a buyer and seller of scrap metal and animal hides at B. Gross and Co., and as a business partner at the Sheridan Appliance Store.
During World War II, he volunteered for paratrooper training in the U.S. Army and was assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division. Three years after discharge, he proposed marriage to Treva Virginia Shields, a traveling nurse from Dickens, Iowa, who at the time had promised herself she’d never marry. The couple remained together through thick and thin for 57 years.
Immediately following their nuptials, Jim and Treva moved to Chicago, where Jim attended Loyola University, but they returned in less that a year to Sheridan to raise their growing family. Jim’s deployment overseas as a reservist during the Korean War ended in an honorable discharge when his wife, pregnant a third time, gave birth to twins.
Family and Faith were the guiding themes of Jim Lannan’s life. Posted on a corkboard in the kitchen of the family home, where Jim kept current a photo display of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, are the words of St. Ignatius Loyola: “Love manifest itself in deeds not in words.”
In keeping with the household head’s conviction, meals at the Lannans’ were always lively events, what with the stories told, the bragging that went on, the disputes that broke out, and the theatrics performed, which developed into talent shows the children often put on after dinner.
Jim was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church. He volunteered his time as a greeter for Sunday morning mass and spent many hours in Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist. He served as Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus and as Scoutmaster in Holy Name’s Troop 108 while his sons were of scouting age.
After retirement in 1991, Jim and Treva traveled extensively to visit their children’s families in the United States and took a trip to Ireland to explore the territory where the family name is rooted.
Jim loved to read a good book, fish a good trout stream, listen to all kinds of music and keep abreast of sport, financial and world news.
He was thankful for life every day he lived and considered himself blessed to preside over a large healthy family, though the recent untimely death of one of his grandsons, David Barbula, caused him sad regret.
Mr. Lannan is survived by his wife, Treva V. Lannan of Sheridan; his brothers John C. Lannan of Portland and William J. Lannan of Helena; his sister Mary Agnes Swarthout of Hazelwood, Missouri; his children James Lannan of Sheridan, John Lannan of Sheridan, Tom Lannan of Wasilla, Alaska, Teresa “Teri” Haley of Sheridan, Virginia “Gini” Olson of Tempe, David Lannan of Tempe, Mary Barbula of Sheridan, Michael Lannan of Fort Worth, Joseph Lannan of Blair, Nebraska, Zachary Lannan of Sheridan, Jeffery Lannan of San Diego, Gregory Lannan of Encino, California; and by 25 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Holy Rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Tuesday, and Catholic Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, both taking place at Holy Name church, the Rev. Ronald Stolcis officiating.
Following burial services at Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, there will be a dinner at the Holy Name Parish Center.
