We would like to think he’s soaring somewhere in a Messershcitt 109. Fred was an immense aviation buff who could spot a plane overhead and just from the silhouette tell you exactly what kind it was. It was impossible to stump him. He was born in Cheyenne, WY on Friday the thirteenth, December 1929, the first child of Edward and Ruby Murphy Goehring. He grew up mostly in Wyoming, his brother and sister were his anchors in a nomadic childhood that included being left with family, friends, and a stay in an orphanage. By the time his folks were ready to settle down, Fred was a teenager and they were all in Alaska. Fred started working for the railroad in Anchorage at age seventeen. He stayed there until he was drafted, in the midst of the Korean War. The US Army brilliantly decided the most crucial place for him to served would be (you guessed it) working on the Alaskan Railroad. (With a pay cut, of course, he was in the Army now!) After his discharge, he went looking for excitement (and where better to look than Sheridan, Wyoming). Evidently he didn’t need too much, though, because after a brief stint working construction, as a ranchhand, and at Yellowstone Park, he went to work at the V. A. Hospital and stayed there for twenty-five years. He met the woman of his (somewhat strange) dreams and went about adding to her collection of daughters. Fred was an incredible artist, a creative storyteller, a self-taught linguist (fluent in Spanish, proficient in German, with a smattering of French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, and Polish). He was an avid reader with tastes running from Hawking and Sagan to Kipling and Suess. He played the piano by ear, wrote poetry and loved to ride horses. He spent millions of hours building model airplanes. He loved animals, small children, the whole Dannels clan, and a woman named Lenna Mae. He is survived by his wife, Lenna, of Sheridan, his stepdaughter Carol (Ron) McAfee of Burley, ID, daughter Christie Vincent of Powell, WY, daughter Bernadine (Jim) Cockey of McCall, ID, and daughter Donna (Mike Tibbets) Gifford of Sheridan. Also a sister, Donna McGee of Raymond, five beautiful granddaughters, seven magnificent grandsons and thousands of model airplanes. Visitation for Mr. Goehring will be 5:00 P.M to 7:00 P.M. Friday, April 22, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Graveside service will be 1:00 P.M. Saturday, April 23, 2005 in the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Gilbert J. von Knipper, 78, of Sheridan,
