Harley G. Bartenhagen, 78 of Sheridan passed away at Sheridan Manor on Friday, January 28, 2005.

Harley Glen Bartenhagen was born March 29, 1926, in Casper, Wyoming, to William and Eleanor (Purkey) Bartenhagen. He grew up and attended school in Sheridan, WY and graduated from Sheridan High School. He joined the Navy in March of 1944 in Bremerton, WA and served on the aircraft carrier USS Belleau Wood and served until his honorable discharge in May of 1946. After returning home from service, Mr. Bartenhagen worked as a Nursing Assistant at the V.A. Hospital. Harley married Mary Moshovsky in 1950 in Sheridan. Later he worked in engineering at the V.A. Hospital in the water and sewage treatment plant. After retirement, Harley enjoyed traveling, camping, hunting fishing, but most of all his grandchildren. He taught many of his boys and many of the neighbor children how to work on bicycles, motorcycles, and cars. He was a life member of the Elks Lodge #520. Harley was a loving, caring father to all of his children.


Mr. Bartenhagen was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Lois Miech, and his half-brother Wesley Hoffman. Survivors include his three sons, Steven Bartenhagen of Denver, CO, David Bartenhagen of Williston, ND, and Keith Bartenhagen of Oklahoma City, OK, and a daughter, Lexie Culligan of Sheridan. His surviving grandchildren are, Andrea Bartenhagen, Nicholas Bartenhagen, Marcia Bartenhagen, Matthew Bartenhagen, Nicole Culligan, Jessica Culligan, Alesha Bartenhagen, Christopher Bartenhagen, and Chase Bartenhagen. He is also survived by a sister, Eunice Hansen of Sandy, UT, and a brother, Carl Bartenhagen of Sheridan.

Cremation has taken place locally, and memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 1, 2005, at First United Methodist Church with Reverend Don Derryberry officiating. Inurnment will follow in the Sheridan Elks Cemetery with military honors. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Harley’s name to the Sheridan Senior Center Meals on Wheels in care of Brenda Torrens and Nicole Christensen, Bank of the West, P.O. Box 9000, Sheridan , WY 82801.


Wiley J. Brimmer, 88, of Sheridan, Wyoming, passed away on Saturday, January 22, 2005, at the Sheridan V.A. Medical Center.

Mr. Brimmer was born on July 17, 1916, in Hulett, Wyoming, to Lyall and Iva M. (Butts) Brimmer. Following his schooling, he married Edna I. "Pinky" Thorn in Deadwood, South Dakota, and their union was blessed with three children. Wiley worked as a rancher until World War II, when he entered the U.S. Army and served his country until August of 1945. Following his military duty, he returned home and continued ranching. The couple moved to Sheridan in 1975 to be near their children, and have remained here. Wiley enjoyed horseback riding, fishing, and other outdoor activities, and he loved spending time with his family and friends.

Mr. Brimmer was preceded in death by his parents; his three brothers, Lorraine, K.C. and Thadeus; his son Timothy Brimmer; and his grandson Wyatt Brimmer. He is survived by Edna, his wife of 66 years; his daughter Judy Pehringer and her husband Jim of Sheridan; his son David "Mike" Brimmer and his wife Paulette of Sheridan; his eight grandchildren; his seven great-grandchildren; and his sister Freda Roberts of Whitefish, Montana.

Cremation has taken place locally, and at Mr. Brimmer’s request, no services will be held. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


Viola E. “Betsy” Brittain, age 90, a former Sheridan resident, died Saturday, January 8, 2004, in Pioneer Manor, Gillette, WY

Betsy was born October 6, 1914, in Perkins County, S. Dakota, to Thomas and Polly (McNeil) Lewis, the youngest of five children.

She lived on the family farm until she was ten years old when the family moved to Rapid City, SD. She graduated from high school in Rapid City in 1932, after which she became a billing clerk and secretary for Black Hills Transportation that later merged with the Burlington Transportation Company. On July 11, 1941, she married Armond Jean Brittain and they moved shortly thereafter to Sheridan where they ran the bus depot for Burlington Transportation. In 1945, the Brittain’s incorporated airline and tour sales into the business and became known as the Brittain Travel Agency. They ran this business as partners until 1982 when the business was sold to Rosie Berger and her partners. Armond died in 1992. In 1997, Betsy moved to Gillette to be near her daughter. Betsy was very active in the community as a member of the First Congregational Church, Mayflower Club, Sheridan Women’s Club, Eastern Star, Daughters of the Nile and an informal social group known as the “Sewing Club”, a group of women who remained faithful friends for over fifty years. In the late 1940’s or early 1950’s, she worked with many other folks in the community to help establish Sheridan College. In her later years, she enjoyed delivering meals on wheels. She loved to dance, travel, walk, socialize with her many friends, spend time with her family, and work in her yard. She kept an immaculate home.

Betsy was also preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, one brother and several nieces and a nephew.

Betsy is survived by her son Phil Brittain of Sisters, OR; daughter Nancy Sorenson of Spotted Horse, WY; six grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be 2:00pm until 6:00pm on Tuesday (Jan. 11th) and 8:30am until Noon on Wednesday from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 2:00pm on Wednesday from First Congregational Church with the Rev. Bob Miller officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery, Masonic Section. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Phyllis Elizabeth Gillis, 87, of Sheridan, WY, died Saturday, January 15, 2005 in the Bonnie Bluejacket Memorial Nursing Home in Greybull, WY.

Mrs. Gillis was born July 30, 1917 in Denver, CO to Frederick William and Katherine Christine (Gimple) Nichols. She grew up and attended the St. Joseph Catholic School from the 1st through the 8th grade in Ft. Collins, CO. She then attended the 9th through the 12th grades in Denver, graduating from South High School there.

Mrs. Gillis married Roy Gillis July 25, 1945 in Denver, CO., and she became a homemaker and mother. She loved to create wonderful meals for her family and friends. She enjoyed sewing and making clothing for her four daughters, was involved with photography for 50 years which culminated Phyllis’ enjoyment by going through all of the albums in her later years and sharing stories with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. One of her greatest enjoyments in life was sitting on her front porch and feeding the squirrels and birds, and just enjoying the outdoors. Mrs. Gillis was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Sheridan.

Mrs. Gillis was preceded in death by her parents; her husband. Roy, in 1985; 1 daughter; 1 granddaughter; 2 brothers; and 1 sister.

Mrs. Gillis is survived by 1 son, Robert Gillis, of Sheridan; 3 daughters, Margaret Schwabauer and Anne Chivers, both of Sheridan, and Christine McMillan, of Greybull, WY; 1 brother, Fred Nichols, of Grand Junction, CO; 1 sister, Mary Quinn, of Denver, CO; 15 grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

At Mrs. Gillis’ request, cremation has taken place, and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home

Lena Audrey (Welch) Koltiska died January 15, 2005 in Sheridan, Wyoming. She was born February 21, 1928 at the family home in Big Horn, Wyoming to Everett J. Welch and Maggie (Verley) Welch. Lena attended grade school at Big Horn and McCormick and graduated from Sheridan High School in 1944 after being advanced two grade levels. She married George Koltiska on September 14, 1946 at the home of her sister Margaret Pilch on Lower Prairie Dog. Lena and George made their home on their ranch on Cat Creek, where they raised four children and where she resided until her death.

Lena was a CNA and worked at Sheridan Memorial Hospital for over 30 years. She enjoyed her work as an Avon Representative. Lena loved her sewing and numerous crafts including quilting, needlework, knitting and crocheting. She especially loved her weekly garage sale excursions with her daughter Audrey. Lena was a 4-H leader for over 25 years. During her years as a 4-H leader, she took hundreds of children to Mountain Camp where her number one rule was to have fun! She was a member and past president of the B.P.O.E. Does.

Lena loved her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Lena’s loving hands and warm heart were a welcome refuge to family and friends.

Lena is survived by her children, Audrey Koltiska, Gary Koltiska and wife Vicki, Deborah Adams and husband Warren, Robert Koltiska and wife Dawn; grandchildren Tom “TJ” Koltiska, Travis, Jason and Justin Koltiska, Genie Adams Mayfield and Trenton Adams, Kristi, Megan and Brandon Koltiska; great grandchildren Sadie Koltiska, Gabrielle and Paden Koltiska, Patrick and Makayla Mayfield, one sister Margaret Pilch and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly fifty-eight years on August 7, 2004, her parents, brothers Junior and Kao Welch, sisters Marjorie Ensor, Shorty (Florence) Boyer, Mary Ellen Good Palmier, Ruth Sherard, Rosalie McCalla.

Vigil service will be 7:00pm Wednesday (Jan. 19th) at Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral liturgy will be 10:00am Thursday from Holy Name Catholic Church with Father Thomas Ogg officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.

Memorials may benefit the Lena Koltiska Arbor Fund in care of Brenda Torrens, Bank of the West, 2 North Main St., Sheridan, WY 82801. Lena and George loved and appreciated their trees and this fund will be used to purchase trees to be planted in Sheridan County.


Hulda Faye Kysar, 90, of Sheridan, WY, died Tuesday, January 25, 2005 in Sheridan Manor following a long illness.

Mrs. Kysar was born March 31, 1914 in Poughkeepsie, NY to Henry Allen and Hazel May (Vradenburg) Moore. She grew up and attended schools in New York and moved to California in 1958. Mrs. Kysar moved to Sheridan in 1972, which she called home. She resided at Heritage Towers for many years before moving to Sheridan Manor.

Mrs. Kysar was very involved in many activities including spending thousands of hours doing volunteer work at the Sheridan V. A. Medical Center. She was a member of the Rebekah Assembly of Wyoming for many years, serving as District Deputy President and Noble Grand. Faye spend much of her time supporting our men and women in the Armed Forces as a member of the Navy Mothers and VFW.

Mrs. Kysar was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband.

She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Steve, of Seal Beach, CA; one son, Raynard Wrobleski, of Oregon; 2 grand daughters; and 4 great grandsons.

Cremation has taken place, and a Memorial Service will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, January 31, 2005 at Champion Ferries Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Derryberry officiating. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.


Philip Larson, 91, of Sheridan, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at his residence.

Phil was born on October 26, 1913, in Boulder, Colorado, to Peter A. and Annamae (Wallace) Larson. Following his graduation from high school, Phil entered the military and served his country until his honorable discharge. He married Geraldine Miller in 1938, and the couple were blessed with three children. Phil enjoyed wood carving and was a genuine artist in wood.

Mr. Larson was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one of his granddaughters, his two sisters, and his brother. He is survived by his three daughters, Nancy Williams and her husband Gerald, Phyllis Fleming and her husband Floyd, and Fay Puckett and her husband Gaines, all of Sheridan; his six grandchildren including Kevin and Jodi Palmer, who live in Sheridan; and his nineteen great-grandchildren, including three local great-grandchildren.

Cremation has taken place locally, and at Mr. Larson’s request, memorial services will not be held. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

The family has requested that memorials be made in Phil’s name to the American Heart Association in care of Sheridan State Bank, 29 N. Gould Street, Sheridan, WY 82801.


Katherine “Kay” Rathburn, age 83, of Sheridan, WY, died Sunday, January 2, 2005, in Westview Health Care Center.

Kay was born August 25, 1921, in Lander, WY, to Christian & Anna (Kostel) Gosch

Kay came to Sheridan in a covered wagon as a young child. She grew up and graduated high school in Sheridan. She moved to Davenport, Iowa, to work and met William Rathburn. They were married on November 7, 1941, in Kahoka, Missouri. When Kay’s husband entered WWII, she returned to Sheridan where they remained to raise their family. Kay held several jobs in Sheridan including working for Memorial Hospital, Dr. Jake Batty and then Sheridan College where she retired in 1987. Kay was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she was also a Stephens Minister. She was also a member of Brundage Addition Homemakers and a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary. Kay was an avid gardener and loved being in the mountains fishing with her family.

Kay was preceded in her death by her parents, sister Marjorie and granddaughter Connie Sue Rathburn.

Kay is survived by her husband; sons William Rathburn II of Sheridan, Raymond Rathburn of Spokane, WA and Stephen Rathburn of Billings, MT; daughter Rosanne McGlaughlin of Tipton, IA; brothers George Gosch of Flagstaff, AZ, Chris Gosch of Winterhaven, FL and William Gosch of Sheridan; sisters Bernice Kinter of Sheridan and Maryanne Pitsch of Hardin, MT; eleven grandchildren and twenty great grandchildren.

Viewing will be 11:00am until 4:00pm on Wednesday (Jan. 5th) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home. Funeral service will be 10:00am on Thursday from Trinity Lutheran Church with the Rev.’s Ronald Nelson and Wilbur Holz officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Elks Cemetery. Burton W. Sargent, 82, of Sheridan, passed away on Saturday, January 8, 2005, at Sheridan County Memorial Hospital.

Burton was born on July 29, 1922, in Craig, Colorado, to Forrest E. and Nellie J. (Gatliff) Sargent. Burton spent his childhood in Arvada, Wyoming, and was a life-long resident, except for the 20 years he spent in Douglas County, Oregon. He entered the U.S. Army in 1941, and served his country in the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force until his honorable discharge in 1945. He married Brooxie Britt on April 4, 1945, in Marysville, Kansas, and the couple were blessed with four children. Burton enjoyed building houses, of which he built three, woodworking, gardening, hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family.

Mr. Sargent was preceded in death by his parents; two of his sisters, Bonita Larke and Verna Sargent; and his beloved wife Brooxie. He is survived by his son Burton William "Bill" Sargent and his wife Tammy of Everett, Washington; his three daughters, Nancy Kosine and her husband Robert of Sheridan, Bonnie Ruth Sargent of Casper, Wyoming, and Elizabeth Gail Savoy and her husband Richard of Houma, Louisiana; his four grandchildren, Brandon Kosine of Laramie, Wyoming, Christina Askins of Thibodeaux, Louisiana, Richard Savoy of Houma, Louisiana, and Zachary Sargent of Everett, Washington; his great-grandson Callaway Kosine of Laramie, Wyoming; and his sister Ruth Imogene Nelson of Florence, Oregon.

Cremation has taken place locally, and memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 11, 2005, at Kane Funeral Home with Reverend Alan Boyles officiating. Inurnment of the cremains will take place in the Arvada Cemetery at a later date. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Evelyn Blanch Wood, 95, died Monday the 3rd of January, 2005, in Sheridan of natural causes.


She was born in Sheridan April 15, 1909, to Olaf and Bertha (Miller) Nelson. She was raised on her father’s ranch on Beaver Creek. After graduating from Sheridan High School she filed for a homestead on Beaver Creek and proved up on it five years later. She was one of the oldest living homesteaders.


Blanch married Roy M. Wood on the 23rd of August 1934. Together they worked for many years on the WS ranch at Wyarno before purchasing their own place south of Sheridan in 1945. They ran a dairy there until 1960 when they purchased a ranch in Clearmont. They worked the OX ranch principally raising registered Red Angus cattle and kids until retirement in 1981. Blanch enjoyed outdoor activities such as riding and fishing. She was an excellent horsewoman and trainer and taught her children the ways of the horse. She loved her family. She raised a daughter and two sons as well as many foster children and cared for many more. Blanch was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a long time member of the Clearmont Women’s Club and the Cattle Women’s Club. Blanch was active in promoting 4-H and having her children participate.


Blanch is survived by her daughter, Ethel Sheets of Sheridan, her son Ola Ray Wood os Powell, her son McKinley D. Wood of Gillette, her foster children, Georgia Rice of Gillette, Richard Sickler of Gillette, Robert Sickler of Texas, Becky Dean of Colorado, and Stormy Calentine of Sheridan; and her eleven grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy in 2000; her parents; her sisters, Margaret Morrow and Lillian Parmeter; and a brother, Andrew Nelson.


Cremation has taken place locally in Sheridan with memorial services being held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 8, 2005 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints with Bishop Richard Welch officiating. Kane Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.


In lieu of flowers the family has requested that memorials be made in Blanch’s name to the Child Advocacy of the Big Horns in care of Kane Funeral Home, 689 Meridian, Sheridan, WY 82801.
